Let $M$ be a 3-connected matroid, and let $N$ be a 3-connected minor of $M$. A pair $\{x_1,x_2\} \subseteq E(M)$ is $N$-detachable if one of the matroids $M/x_1/x_2$ or $M \backslash x_1 \backslash x_2$ is both 3-connected and has an $N$-minor. This is the second in a series of three papers where we describe the structures that arise when it is not possible to find an $N$-detachable pair in $M$. In the first paper in the series, we showed that, under mild assumptions, either $M$ has an $N$-detachable pair, $M$ has one of three particular 3-separators that can appear in a matroid with no N-detachable pairs, or there is a 3-separating set $X$ with certain strong structural properties. In this paper, we analyse matroids with such a structured set $X$, and prove that they have either an $N$-detachable pair, or one of five particular 3-separators that can appear in a matroid with no $N$-detachable pairs.

An incidence of a graph $G$ is a pair $(u,e)$ where $u$ is a vertex of $G$ and $e$ is an edge of $G$ incident with $u$. Two incidences $(u,e)$ and $(v,f)$ of $G$ are adjacent whenever (i) $u=v$, or (ii) $e=f$, or (iii) $uv=e$ or $uv=f$. An incidence $k$-coloring of $G$ is a mapping from the set of incidences of $G$ to a set of $k$ colors such that every two adjacent incidences receive distinct colors. The notion of incidence coloring has been introduced by Brualdi and Quinn Massey (1993) from a relation to strong edge coloring, and since then, attracted by many authors. On a list version of incidence coloring, it was shown by Benmedjdoub et. al. (2017) that every Hamiltonian cubic graph is incidence 6-choosable. In this paper, we show that every cubic (loopless) multigraph is incidence 6-choosable. As a direct consequence, it implies that the list strong chromatic index of a $(2,3)$-bipartite graph is at most 6, where a (2,3)-bipartite graph is a bipartite graph such that one partite set has maximum degree at most 2 and the other partite set has maximum degree at most 3.
A combinatorial model for $\nabla m_μ$
The modified Macdonald polynomials introduced by Garsia and Haiman (1996) have many remarkable combinatorial properties. One such class of properties involves applying the $\nabla$ operator of Bergeron and Garsia (1999) to basic symmetric functions. The first discovery of this type was the Shuffle Conjecture of Haglund, Haiman, Loehr, Remmel, and Ulyanov (2005), which relates the expression $\nabla e_n$ to parking functions. A refinement of this conjecture, called the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture, was introduced by Haglund, Morse, and Zabrocki (2012) and proved by Carlsson and Mellit (2015).
We give a symmetric function identity relating hook monomial symmetric functions to the operators used in the Compositional Shuffle Conjecture. This implies a parking function interpretation for nabla of a hook monomial symmetric function, as well as LLT positivity. We show that our identity is a $q$-analog of the expansion of a hook monomial into complete homogeneous symmetric functions given by Kulikauskas and Remmel (2006). We use this connection to conjecture a model for expanding $\nabla m_μ$ in this way when $μ$ is not a hook.
Constructions of maximum few-distance sets in Euclidean spaces
A finite set of distinct vectors $\mathcal{X}$ in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ is called an $s$-distance set if the set of mutual distances between distinct elements of $\mathcal{X}$ has cardinality $s$. In this paper we present a combined approach of isomorph-free exhaustive generation of graphs and Gröbner basis computation to classify the largest $3$-distance sets in $\mathbb{R}^4$, the largest $4$-distance sets in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and the largest $6$-distance sets in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We also construct new examples of large $s$-distance sets for $d\leq 8$ and $s\leq 6$, and independently verify several earlier results from the literature.

We consider a random permutation drawn from the set of permutations of length $n$ that avoid some given set of patterns of length 3. We show that the number of occurrences of another pattern $σ$ has a limit distribution, after suitable scaling. In several cases, the number is asymptotically normal; this contrasts to the cases of permutations avoiding a single pattern of length 3 studied in earlier papers.

A proper edge colouring of a graph is adjacent vertex distinguishing if no two adjacent vertices see the same set of colours. Using a clever application of the Local Lemma, Hatami (2005) proved that every graph with maximum degree $Δ$ and no isolated edge has an adjacent vertex distinguishing edge colouring with $Δ+ 300$ colours, provided $Δ$ is large enough. We show that this bound can be reduced to $Δ+ 19$. This is motivated by the conjecture of Zhang, Liu, and Wang (2002) that $Δ+ 2$ colours are enough for $Δ\geq 3$.
Skew divided difference operators in the Nichols algebra associated to a finite Coxeter group
Let $(W,S)$ be a finite Coxeter system with root system $R$ and with set of positive roots $R^+$. For $α\in R$, $v,w\in W$, we denote by $\partial_α$, $\partial_w$ and $\partial_{w/v}$ the divided difference operators and skew divided difference operators acting on the coinvariant algebra of $W$. Generalizing the work of Liu, we prove that $\partial_{w/v}$ can be written as a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients in $\partial_α$ where $α\in R^+$. In fact, we prove the stronger and analogous statement in the Nichols-Woronowicz algebra model for Schubert calculus on $W$ after Bazlov. We draw consequences of this theorem on saturated chains in the Bruhat order, and partially treat the question when $\partial_{w/v}$ can be written as a monomial in $\partial_α$ where $α\in R^+$. In an appendix, we study related combinatorics on shuffle elements and Bruhat intervals of length two.

Let $P$ be a partially ordered set. We prove that if $n$ is sufficiently large, then there exists a packing $\mathcal{P}$ of copies of $P$ in the Boolean lattice $(2^{[n]},\subset)$ that covers almost every element of $2^{[n]}$: $\mathcal{P}$ might not cover the minimum and maximum of $2^{[n]}$, and at most $|P|-1$ additional points due to divisibility. In particular, if $|P|$ divides $2^{n}-2$, then the truncated Boolean lattice $2^{[n]}-\{\emptyset,[n]\}$ can be partitioned into copies of $P$. This confirms a conjecture of Lonc from 1991.

In this paper we explore the asymptotic enumeration of three-dimensional excursions confined to the positive octant. As shown in [29], both the exponential growth and the critical exponent admit universal formulas, respectively in terms of the inventory of the step set and of the principal Dirichlet eigenvalue of a certain spherical triangle, itself being characterized by the steps of the model. We focus on the critical exponent, and our main objective is to relate combinatorial properties of the step set (structure of the so-called group of the walk, existence of a Hadamard factorization, existence of differential equations satisfied by the generating functions) to geometric or analytic properties of the associated spherical triangle (remarkable angles, tiling properties, existence of an exceptional closed-form formula for the principal eigenvalue). As in general the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet problem on a spherical triangle are not known in closed form, we also develop a finite-elements method to compute approximate values, typically with ten digits of precision.

In this paper, we study pattern avoidances of generalized permutations and show that the number of all generalized permutations avoiding $π$ is independent of the choice of $π\in S_3$, which extends the classic results on permutations avoiding $π\in S_3$. Extending both Dyck path and Riordan path, we introduce the Catalan-Riordan path which turns out to be a combinatorial interpretation of the difference array of Catalan numbers. As applications, we interpret both Motzkin and Riordan numbers in two ways, via semistandard Young tableaux of two rows and generalized permutations avoiding $π\in S_3$. Analogous to Lewis's method, we establish a bijection from generalized permutations to rectangular semistandard Young tableaux which will recover several known results in the literature.

A classical result by Pachner states that two $d$-dimensional combinatorial manifolds with boundary are PL homeomorphic if and only they can be connected by a sequence of shellings and inverse shellings. We prove that for balanced, i.e., properly $(d + 1)$-colored, manifolds such a sequence can be chosen such that balancedness is preserved in each step. As a key ingredient we establish that any two balanced PL homeomorphic combinatorial manifolds with the same boundary are connected by a sequence of basic cross-flips, as was shown recently by Izmestiev, Klee and Novik for balanced manifolds without boundary. Moreover, we enumerate combinatorially different basic cross-flips and show that roughly half of these suffice to relate any two PL homeomorphic manifolds.
Formal Duality in Finite Abelian Groups

Inspired by an experimental study of energy-minimizing periodic configurations in Euclidean space, Cohn, Kumar and Schürmann proposed the concept of formal duality between a pair of periodic configurations, which indicates an unexpected symmetry possessed by the energy-minimizing periodic configurations. Later on, Cohn, Kumar, Reiher and Schürmann translated the formal duality between a pair of periodic configurations into the formal duality of a pair of subsets in a finite abelian group. This insight suggests to study the combinatorial counterpart of formal duality, which is a configuration named formally dual pair. In this paper, we initiate a systematic investigation on formally dual pairs in finite abelian groups, which involves basic concepts, constructions, characterizations and nonexistence results. In contrast to the belief that primitive formally dual pairs are very rare in cyclic groups, we construct three families of primitive formally dual pairs in noncyclic groups. These constructions enlighten us to propose the concept of even sets, which reveals more structural information about formally dual pairs and leads to a characterization of rank three primitive formally dual pairs. Finally, we derive some nonexistence results about primitive formally dual pairs, which are in favor of the main conjecture that except two small examples, no primitive formally dual pair exists in cyclic groups.
New bounds on the distance Laplacian and distance signless Laplacian spectral radii
Let G be a simple undirected connected graph. In this paper, new upper bounds on the distance Laplacian spectral radius of G are obtained. Moreover, new lower and upper bounds for the distance signless Laplacian spectral radius of G are derived. Some of the above mentioned bounds are sharp and the graphs attaining the corresponding bound are characterized. Several illustrative examples are included.
Generalized Hypergraph Coloring

A smooth hypergraph property $\mathcal{P}$ is a class of hypergraphs that is hereditary and non-trivial, i.e., closed under induced subhypergraphs and it contains a non-empty hypergraph but not all hypergraphs. In this paper we examine $\mathcal{P}$-colorings of hypergraphs with smooth hypergraph properties $\mathcal{P}$. A $\mathcal{P}$-coloring of a hypergraph $H$ with color set $C$ is a function $\varphi:V(H) \to C$ such that $H[\varphi^{-1}(c)]$ belongs to $\mathcal{P}$ for all $c \in C$. Let $L: V(H) \to 2^C$ be a so called list-assignment of the hypergraph $H$. Then, a $(\mathcal{P},L)$-coloring of $H$ is a $\mathcal{P}$-coloring $\varphi$ of $H$ such that $\varphi(v) \in L(v)$ for all $v \in V(H)$. The aim of this paper is a characterization of $(\mathcal{P},L)$-critical hypergraphs. Those are hypergraphs $H$ such $H-v$ is $(\mathcal{P},L)$-colorable for all $v \in V(H)$ but $H$ itself is not. Our main theorem is a Gallai-type result for critical hypergraphs, which implies a Brooks-type result for $(\mathcal{P},L)$-colorable hypergraphs. In the last section, we prove a Gallai bound for the degree sum of $(\mathcal{P},L)$-critical locally linear hypergraphs.

For any integer $q\geq 2$ we provide a formula to express indefinite sums of a sequence $(f(n))_{n\geq 0}$ weighted by $q$-periodic sequences in terms of indefinite sums of sequences $(f(qn+p))_{n\geq 0}$, where $p\in\{0,\ldots,q-1\}$. When explicit expressions for the latter sums are available, this formula immediately provides explicit expressions for the former sums. We also illustrate this formula through some examples.

Colour an element of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ white if its coordinates are coprime and black otherwise. What does this colouring look like when seen from a "uniformly chosen" point of $\mathbb{Z}^d$? More generally, label every element of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ by its GCD: what do the labels look like around a "uniform" point of $\mathbb{Z}^d$? We answer these questions and generalisations of them, provide results of graphon convergence, as well as a "local/graphon" convergence. One can also investigate the percolative properties of the colouring under study.
A Generalized Cover's Problem
Generalizing a problem posed by Cover, we propose an adversarial game in which a permutation is incrementally constructed in a setting of partial information. As in the secretary problem, this permutation is exposed in stages via the successive components of its Lehmer code. Extending Cover's result, which constitutes the case $n = 2$, we establish that a random permutation of $n$ adversarially constructed real numbers can be reconstructed with better-than-random probability, provided that certain among the numbers it permutes are made visible during the process.
Generalized permutohedra in the kinematic space

In this note, we study the permutohedral geometry of the poles of a certain differential form introduced in recent work of Arkani-Hamed, Bai, He and Yan. There it was observed that the poles of the form determine a family of polyhedra which have the same face lattice as that of the permutohedron. We realize that family explicitly, proving that it in fact fills out the configuration space of a particularly well-behaved family of generalized permutohedra, the zonotopal generalized permutohedra, that are obtained as the Minkowski sums of line segments parallel to the root directions $e_i-e_j$.
Finally we interpret Mizera's formula for the biadjoint scalar amplitude $m(\mathbb{I}_n,\mathbb{I}_n)$, restricted to a certain dimension $n-2$ subspace of the kinematic space, as a sum over the boundary components of the standard root cone, which is the conical hull of the roots $e_1-e_2,\ldots, e_{n-2}-e_{n-1}$.

The maximum relaxation time of a random walk

We show the minimum spectral gap of the normalized Laplacian over all simple, connected graphs on $n$ vertices is $(1+o(1))\tfrac{54}{n^3}$. This minimum is achieved asymptotically by a double kite graph. Consequently, this leads to sharp upper bounds for the maximum relaxation time of a random walk, settling a conjecture of Aldous and Fill. We also improve an eigenvalue-diameter inequality by giving a new lower bound for the spectral gap of the normalized Laplacian. This eigenvalue lower bound is asymptotically best possible.
