A counterexample to a conjecture on facial unique-maximal colorings
Published • View Publication • BIB
A facial unique-maximum coloring of a plane graph is a proper vertex coloring by natural numbers where on each face $α$ the maximal color appears exactly once on the vertices of $α$. Fabrici and Göring proved that six colors are enough for any plane graph and conjectured that four colors suffice. This conjecture is a strengthening of the Four Color theorem. Wendland later decreased the upper bound from six to five. In this note, we disprove the conjecture by giving an infinite family of counterexamples. Thus we conclude that facial unique-maximum chromatic number of the sphere is five.

Ramsey equivalence of $K_n$ and $K_n+K_{n-1}$ for multiple colours
In 2015 Bloom and Liebenau proved that $K_n$ and $K_n+K_{n-1}$ possess the same $2$-Ramsey graphs for all $n\geq 3$ (with a single exception for $n=3$). In the following we give a simple proof that $K_n$ and $K_n+K_{n-1}$ possess the same $r$-Ramsey graphs for all $n, r\geq 3$.

Fractional matching preclusion number of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph with an even number of vertices. The matching preclusion number of $G$, denoted by $mp(G)$, is the minimum number of edges whose deletion leaves the resulting graph without a perfect matching. We introduced a $0$-$1$ linear programming which can be used to find matching preclusion number of graphs. In this paper, by relaxing of the $0$-$1$ linear programming we obtain a linear programming and call its optimal objective value as fractional matching preclusion number of graph $G$, denoted by $mp_f(G)$. We show $mp_f(G)$ can be computed in polynomial time for any graph $G$. By using perfect matching polytope, we transform it as a new linear programming whose optimal value equals the reciprocal of $mp_f(G)$. For bipartite graph $G$, we obtain an explicit formula for $mp_f(G)$ and show that $\lfloor mp_f(G) \rfloor$ is the maximum integer $k$ such that $G$ has a $k$-factor. Moreover, for any two bipartite graphs $G$ and $H$, we show $mp_f(G \square H) \geqslant mp_f(G)+\lfloor mp_f(H) \rfloor$, where $G \square H$ is the Cartesian product of $G$ and $H$.
The Graovac-Pisanski index of connected bipartite graphs with applications to hydrocarbon molecules
Published in Fuller. Nanotub. Car. N. 29 (2021) 884-889 • View Publication • BIB
The Graovac-Pisanski index, also called the modified Wiener index, was introduced in 1991 and represents an extension of the original Wiener index, because it considers beside the distances in a graph also its symmetries. Similarly as Wiener in 1947 showed the correlation of the Wiener indices of the alkane series with the boiling points, in 2018 the connection between the Graovac-Pisanski index and the melting points of some hydrocarbon molecules was established. In this paper, we prove that the Graovac-Pisanski index of any connected bipartite graph as well as of any connected graph on an even number of vertices is an integer number. These results are applied to some important families of hydrocarbon molecules. By using a computer programme, the graphs with a non-integer Graovac-Pisanski index on at most nine vertices are counted. Finally, an infinite class of unicyclic graphs with a non-integer Graovac-Pisanski index is described.
On the Clar Number of Benzenoid Graphs
Published in MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 80 (2018) 173-188 • Search Publication
A Clar set of a benzenoid graph $B$ is a maximum set of independent alternating hexagons over all perfect matchings of $B$. The Clar number of $B$, denoted by ${\rm Cl}(B)$, is the number of hexagons in a Clar set for $B$. In this paper, we first prove some results on the independence number of subcubic trees to study the Clar number of catacondensed benzenoid graphs. As the main result of the paper we prove an upper bound for the Clar number of catacondensed benzenoid graphs and characterize the graphs that attain this bound. More precisely, it is shown that for a catacondensed benzenoid graph $B$ with $n$ hexagons ${\rm Cl}(B) \leq [(2n+1)/3]$.

Generation and properties of nut graphs
A nut graph is a graph on at least 2 vertices whose adjacency matrix has nullity 1 and for which non-trivial kernel vectors do not contain a zero. Chemical graphs are connected, with maximum degree at most three. We present a new algorithm for the exhaustive generation of non-isomorphic nut graphs. Using this algorithm, we determined all nut graphs up to 13 vertices and all chemical nut graphs up to 22 vertices. Furthermore, we determined all nut graphs among the cubic polyhedra up to 34 vertices and all nut fullerenes up to 250 vertices. Nut graphs are of interest in chemistry of conjugated systems, in models of electronic structure, radical reactivity and molecular conduction. The relevant mathematical properties of chemical nut graphs are the position of the zero eigenvalue in the graph spectrum, and the dispersion in magnitudes of kernel eigenvector entries ($r$: the ratio of maximum to minimum magnitude of entries). Statistics are gathered on these properties for all the nut graphs generated here. We also show that all chemical nut graphs have $r \ge 2$ and that there is at least one chemical nut graph with $r = 2$ for every order $n \ge 9$ (with the exception of $n = 10$).

Lower Bounds for Approximating Graph Parameters via Communication Complexity
In a celebrated work, Blais, Brody, and Matulef developed a technique for proving property testing lower bounds via reductions from communication complexity. Their work focused on testing properties of functions, and yielded new lower bounds as well as simplified analyses of known lower bounds. Here, we take a further step in generalizing the methodology of Blais et al. to analyze the query complexity of graph parameter estimation problems. In particular, our technique decouples the lower bound arguments from the representation of the graph, allowing it to work with any query type. We illustrate our technique by providing new simpler proofs of previously known tight lower bounds for the query complexity of several graph problems: estimating the number of edges in a graph, sampling edges from an almost-uniform distribution, estimating the number of triangles (and more generally, $r$-cliques) in a graph, and estimating the moments of the degree distribution of a graph. We also prove new lower bounds for estimating the edge connectivity of a graph and estimating the number of instances of any fixed subgraph in a graph. We show that the lower bounds for estimating the number of triangles and edge connectivity also hold in a strictly stronger computational model that allows access to uniformly random edge samples.

Enumeration of permutations avoiding a triple of 4-letter patterns is all done
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper completes a project to enumerate permutations avoiding a triple T of 4-letter patterns, in the sense of classical pattern avoidance, for every T. There are 317 symmetry classes of such triples T and previous papers have enumerated avoiders for all but 14 of them. One of these 14 is conjectured not to have an algebraic generating function. Here, we find the generating function for each of the remaining 13, and it is algebraic in each case.

Finite connected components in infinite directed and multiplex networks with arbitrary degree distributions
Published in Phys. Rev. E 96, 052304 (2017) • View Publication • BIB
This work presents exact expressions for size distributions of weak/multilayer connected components in two generalisations of the configuration model: networks with directed edges and multiplex networks with arbitrary number of layers. The expressions are computable in a polynomial time, and, under some restrictions, are tractable from the asymptotic theory point of view. If first partial moments of the degree distribution are finite, the size distribution for two-layer connected components in multiplex networks exhibits exponent $-\frac{3}{2}$ in the critical regime, whereas the size distribution of weakly connected components in directed networks exhibits two critical exponents, $-\frac{1}{2}$ and $-\frac{3}{2}$.

Relative positions of points on the real line and balanced parentheses
Consider a finite set of positive real numbers $S$. For any real number $λ> 1$, a Dyck word denoted $\langle\! \langle S \rangle\! \rangle_λ \in \{a,b\}^{\ast}$, was defined in [CaballeroWords2017] in order to compute Hooley's $Δ$-function and its generalization. The aim of this paper is to prove that, given a real number $λ> 1$, any Dyck word can be expressed as $\langle\! \langle S \rangle\! \rangle_λ$ for some finite set $S$ of positive real numbers.
Self-Similar Algebras with connections to Run-length Encoding and Rational Languages
A self-similar algebra $\left(\mathfrak{A}, ψ\right)$ is an associative algebra $\mathfrak{A}$ with a morphism of algebras $ψ: \mathfrak{A} \longrightarrow M_d \left( \mathfrak{A}\right)$, where $M_d \left( \mathfrak{A}\right)$ is the set of $d\times d$ matrices with coefficients from $\mathfrak{A}$. We study the connection between self-similar algebras with run-length encoding and rational languages. In particular, we provide a curious relationship between the eigenvalues of a sequence of matrices related to a specific self-similar algebra and the smooth words over a 2-letter alphabet. We also consider the language $L(s)$ of words $u$ in $(Σ\times Σ)^*$ where $Σ=\{0,1\}$ such that $s\cdot u$ is a unit in $\mathfrak{A}$. We prove that $L(s)$ is rational and provide an asymptotic formula for the number of words of a given length in $L(s)$.

Zeros of the deformed exponential function
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $f(x)=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{n!}q^{n(n-1)/2}x^n$ ($0<q<1$) be the deformed exponential function. It is known that the zeros of $f(x)$ are real and form a negative decreasing sequence $(x_k)$ ($k\ge 1$). We investigate the complete asymptotic expansion for $x_{k}$ and prove that for any $n\ge1$, as $k\to \infty$, \begin{align*} x_k=-kq^{1-k}\Big(1+\sum_{i=1}^{n}C_i(q)k^{-1-i}+o(k^{-1-n})\Big), \end{align*} where $C_i(q)$ are some $q$ series which can be determined recursively. We show that each $C_{i}(q)\in \mathbb{Q}[A_0,A_1,A_2]$, where $A_{i}=\sum_{m=1}^{\infty}m^iσ(m)q^m$ and $σ(m)$ denotes the sum of positive divisors of $m$. When writing $C_{i}$ as a polynomial in $A_0, A_1$ and $A_2$, we find explicit formulas for the coefficients of the linear terms by using Bernoulli numbers. Moreover, we also prove that $C_{i}(q)\in \mathbb{Q}[E_2,E_4,E_6]$, where $E_2$, $E_4$ and $E_6$ are the classical Eisenstein series of weight 2, 4 and 6, respectively.

Maximum matchings and minimum dominating sets in Apollonian networks and extended Tower of Hanoi graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Apollonian networks display the remarkable power-law and small-world properties as observed in most realistic networked systems. Their dual graphs are extended Tower of Hanoi graphs, which are obtained from the Tower of Hanoi graphs by adding a special vertex linked to all its three extreme vertices. In this paper, we study analytically maximum matchings and minimum dominating sets in Apollonian networks and their dual graph- s, both of which have found vast applications in various fields, e.g. structural controllability of complex networks. For both networks, we determine their matching number, domination number, the number of maximum matchings, as well as the number of minimum dominating sets.

Waring's Problem in Finite Rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we obtain sharp results for Waring's problem over general finite rings, by using a combination of Artin-Wedderburn theory and Hensel's lemma and building on new proofs of analogous results over finite fields that are achieved using spectral graph theory. We also prove an analogue of Sárközy's theorem for finite fields.

Local spectral expansion approach to high dimensional expanders part I: Descent of spectral gaps
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper introduces the notion of local spectral expansion of a simplicial complex as a possible analogue of spectral expansion defined for graphs. We then show that the condition of local spectral expansion for a complex yields various spectral gaps in both the links of the complex and the global Laplacians of the complex.

A polynomial bound for the arithmetic $k$-cycle removal lemma in vector spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
For each $k\geq 3$, Green proved an arithmetic $k$-cycle removal lemma for any abelian group $G$. The best known bounds relating the parameters in the lemma for general $G$ are of tower-type. For $k>3$, even in the case $G=\mathbb{F}_2^n$ no better bounds were known prior to this paper. This special case has received considerable attention due to its close connection to property testing of boolean functions. For every $k\geq 3$, we prove a polynomial bound relating the parameters for $G=\mathbb{F}_p^n$, where $p$ is any fixed prime. This extends the result for $k=3$ by the first two authors. Due to substantial issues with generalizing the proof of the $k=3$ case, a new strategy is developed in order to prove the result for $k>3$.

On sets with small sumset in the circle
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove results on the structure of a subset of the circle group having positive inner Haar measure and doubling constant close to the minimum. These results go toward a continuous analogue in the circle of Freiman's $3k-4$ theorem from the integer setting. An analogue of this theorem in $\mathbb{Z}_p$ has been pursued extensively, and we use some recent results in this direction. For instance, obtaining a continuous analogue of a result of Serra and Zémor, we prove that if a subset $A$ of the circle is not too large and has doubling constant at most $2+\varepsilon$ with $\varepsilon<10^{-4}$, then for some integer $n>0$ the dilate $n\cdot A$ is included in an interval in which it has density at least $1/(1+\varepsilon)$. Our arguments yield other variants of this result as well, notably a version for two sets which makes progress toward a conjecture of Bilu. We include two applications of these results. The first is a new upper bound on the size of $k$-sum-free sets in the circle and in $\mathbb{Z}_p$. The second gives structural information on subsets of $\mathbb{R}$ of doubling constant at most $3+\varepsilon$.
Enumerating Hassett's wall and chamber decomposition of the moduli space of weighted stable curves
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hassett constructed a class of modular compactifications of the moduli space of pointed curves by adding weights to the marked points. This leads to a natural wall and chamber decomposition of the domain of admissible weights where the moduli space and universal family remain constant inside a chamber, and may change upon crossing a wall. The goal of this paper is to count the number of chambers in this decomposition. We relate these chambers to a class of boolean functions known as linear threshold functions (LTFs), and discover a subclass of LTFs which are in bijection with the chambers. Using this relation, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of chambers, and compute the exact number of chambers for moduli spaces of weighted stable curves with at most 9 points. In addition, we provide an algorithm for the enumeration of the chambers and prove results in computational complexity.

Maximal independent sets on a grid graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
An independent vertex set of a graph is a set of vertices of the graph in which no two vertices are adjacent, and a maximal independent set is one that is not a proper subset of any other independent set. In this paper we count the number of maximal independent sets of vertices on a complete rectangular grid graph. More precisely, we provide a recursive matrix-relation producing the partition function with respect to the number of vertices. The asymptotic behavior of the maximal hard square entropy constant is also provided. We adapt the state matrix recursion algorithm, recently invented by the author to answer various two-dimensional regular lattice model problems in enumerative combinatorics and statistical mechanics.
