Gallai-Ramsey numbers of $C_9$ with multiple colors
We study Ramsey-type problems in Gallai-colorings. Given a graph $G$ and an integer $k\ge1$, the Gallai-Ramsey number $gr_k(K_3,G)$ is the least positive integer $n$ such that every $k$-coloring of the edges of the complete graph on $n$ vertices contains either a rainbow triangle or a monochromatic copy of $G$. It turns out that $gr_k(K_3, G)$ behaves more nicely than the classical Ramsey number $r_k(G)$. However, finding exact values of $gr_k (K_3, G)$ is far from trivial. In this paper, we prove that $gr_k(K_3, C_9)= 4\cdot 2^k+1$ for all $k\ge1$. This new result provides partial evidence for the first open case of the Triple Odd Cycle Conjecture of Bondy and Erdős from 1973. Our technique relies heavily on the structural result of Gallai on edge-colorings of complete graphs without rainbow triangles. We believe the method we developed can be used to determine the exact values of $gr_k(K_3, C_n)$ for odd integers $n\ge11$.

Character tables and the problem of existence of finite projective planes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, the authors of the present work (together with M. N. Kolountzakis) introduced a new version of the non-commutative Delsarte scheme and applied it to the problem of mutually unbiased bases. Here we use this method to investigate the existence of a finite projective plane of a given order d. In particular, a short new proof is obtained for the nonexistence of a projective plane of order 6. For higher orders like 10 and 12, the method is non decisive but could turn out to give important supplementary informations.

Many Triangles with Few Edges
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 26, Issue 2 (2019), P2.36 • View Publication • BIB
Extremal problems concerning the number of independent sets or complete subgraphs in a graph have been well studied in recent years. Cutler and Radcliffe proved that among graphs with $n$ vertices and maximum degree at most $r$, where $n = a(r+1)+b$ and $0 \le b \le r$, $aK_{r+1}\cup K_b$ has the maximum number of complete subgraphs, answering a question of Galvin. Gan, Loh, and Sudakov conjectured that $aK_{r+1}\cup K_b$ also maximizes the number of complete subgraphs $K_t$ for each fixed size $t \ge 3$, and proved this for $a = 1$. Cutler and Radcliffe proved this conjecture for $r \le 6$. We investigate a variant of this problem where we fix the number of edges instead of the number of vertices. We prove that $aK_{r+1}\cup \mathcal{C}(b)$, where $\mathcal{C}(b)$ is the colex graph on $b$ edges, maximizes the number of triangles among graphs with $m$ edges and any fixed maximum degree $r\le 8$, where $m = a \binom{r+1}{2} + b$ and $0 \le b < \binom{r+1}{2}$.

On Bergeron's positivity problem for $q$-binomial coefficients
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 25 (2018), no. 2, Paper P2.17 • View Publication • BIB
F. Bergeron recently asked the intriguing question whether $\binom{b+c}{b}_q -\binom{a+d}{d}_q$ has nonnegative coefficients as a polynomial in $q$, whenever $a,b,c,d$ are positive integers, $a$ is the smallest, and $ad=bc$. We conjecture that, in fact, this polynomial is also always unimodal, and combinatorially show our conjecture for $a\le 3$ and any $b,c\ge 4$. The main ingredient will be a novel (and rather technical) application of Zeilberger's KOH theorem.

Semi-infinite Plücker relations and Weyl modules
Published • View Publication • BIB
The goal of this paper is twofold. First, we write down the semi-infinite Plücker relations, describing the Drinfeld-Plücker embedding of the (formal version of) semi-infinite flag varieties in type A. Second, we study the homogeneous coordinate ring, i.e. the quotient by the ideal generated by the semi-infinite Plücker relations. We establish the isomorphism with the algebra of dual global Weyl modules and derive a new character formula.

Some improved bounds on two energy-like invariants of some derived graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a simple graph $G$, its Laplacian-energy-like invariant $LEL(G)$ and incidence energy $IE(G)$ are the sum of square root of its all Laplacian eigenvalues and signless Laplacian eigenvalues, respectively. Applying the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality and the Ozeki inequality, along with its refined version, we obtain some improved bounds on $LEL$ and $IE$ of the $\mathcal {R}$-graph and $\mathcal{Q}$-graph for a regular graph. Theoretical analysis indicates that these results improve some known results. In addition, some new lower bounds on $LEL$ and $IE$ of the line graph of a semiregular graph are also given.

Miquel dynamics for circle patterns
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not., 2020(3), 813-852, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
We study a new discrete-time dynamical system on circle patterns with the combinatorics of the square grid. This dynamics, called Miquel dynamics, relies on Miquel's six circles theorem. We provide a coordinatization of the appropriate space of circle patterns on which the dynamics acts and use it to derive local recurrence formulas. Isoradial circle patterns arise as periodic points of Miquel dynamics. Furthermore, we prove that certain signed sums of intersection angles are preserved by the dynamics. Finally, when the initial circle pattern is spatially biperiodic with a fundamental domain of size two by two, we show that the appropriately normalized motion of intersection points of circles takes place along an explicit quartic curve.

On Isoperimetric Stability

We show that a non-empty subset of an abelian group with a small edge boundary must be large; in particular, if $A$ and $S$ are finite, non-empty subsets of an abelian group such that $S$ is independent, and the edge boundary of $A$ with respect to $S$ does not exceed $(1-γ)|S||A|$ with a real $γ\in(0,1]$, then $|A| \ge 4^{(1-1/d)γ|S|}$, where $d$ is the smallest order of an element of $S$. Here the constant $4$ is best possible. As a corollary, we derive an upper bound for the size of the largest independent subset of the set of popular differences of a finite subset of an abelian group. For groups of exponent $2$ and $3$, our bound translates into a sharp estimate for the additive dimension of the popular difference set. We also prove, as an auxiliary result, the following estimate of possible independent interest: if $A \subset \mathbb Z^n$ is a finite, non-empty downset then, denoting by $w(a)$ the number of non-zero components of the vector $a\in A$, we have \[\frac1{|A|} \sum_{a\in A} w(a) \le \frac12\, \log_2 |A|.\]

Analytic Combinatorics in Several Variables: Effective Asymptotics and Lattice Path Enumeration
The field of analytic combinatorics, which studies the asymptotic behaviour of sequences through analytic properties of their generating functions, has led to the development of deep and powerful tools with applications across mathematics and the natural sciences. In addition to the now classical univariate theory, recent work in the study of analytic combinatorics in several variables (ACSV) has shown how to derive asymptotics for the coefficients of certain D-finite functions represented by diagonals of multivariate rational functions. We give a pedagogical introduction to the methods of ACSV from a computer algebra viewpoint, developing rigorous algorithms and giving the first complexity results in this area under conditions which are broadly satisfied. Furthermore, we give several new applications of ACSV to the enumeration of lattice walks restricted to certain regions. In addition to proving several open conjectures on the asymptotics of such walks, a detailed study of lattice walk models with weighted steps is undertaken.

Roman domination: changing, unchanging, $γ_R$-graphs
A Roman dominating function (RD-function) on a graph $G = (V(G), E(G))$ is a labeling $f : V(G) \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\}$ such that every vertex with label $0$ has a neighbor with label $2$. The weight $f(V(G))$ of a RD-function $f$ on $G$ is the value $Σ_{v\in V(G)} f (v)$. The {\em Roman domination number} $γ_{R}(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum weight of a RD-function on $G$. The six classes of graphs resulting from the changing or unchanging of the Roman domination number of a graph when a vertex is deleted, or an edge is deleted or added are considered. We consider relationships among the classes, which are illustrated in a Venn diagram. A graph $G$ is Roman domination $k$-critical if the removal of any set of $k$ vertices decreases the Roman domination number. Some initial properties of these graphs are studied. The $γ_R$-graph of a graph $G$ is any graph which vertex set is the collection $\mathscr{D}_R(G)$ of all minimum weight RD-functions on $G$. We define adjacency between any two elements of $\mathscr{D}_R(G)$ in several ways, and initiate the study of the obtained $γ_R$-graphs.

Boundary optimization for rough sets
Published in Discrete Math. 341 (2018) 2465--2477 • View Publication • BIB
Let $n > m\ge 2$ be integers and let $\mathcal{A}=\{A_1,\dots,A_m\}$ be a partition of $[n]=\{1,\dots,n\}$. For $X \subseteq [n]$, its $\mathcal{A}$-boundary region $\mathcal{A}(X)$ is defined to be the union of those blocks $A_i$ of $\mathcal{A}$ for which $A_i\cap X\neq \emptyset$ and $A_i\cap ([n] \setminus X)\neq \emptyset$. For three different probability distributions on the power set of $[n]$, partitions $\mathcal{A}$ of $[n]$ are determined such that the expected cardinality of the $\mathcal{A}$-boundary region of a randomly chosen subset of $[n]$ is minimal and maximal, respectively. The problem can be reduced to an optimization problem for integer partitions of $n$. In the most difficult case, the concave-convex shape of the corresponding weight function as well as several other inequalities are proved using an integral representation of the weight function. In one case, there is an interesting analogon to the AZ-identity. The study is motivated by the rough set theory.

Variable Version Lovász Local Lemma: Beyond Shearer's Bound
Published • View Publication • BIB
A tight criterion under which the abstract version Lovász Local Lemma (abstract-LLL) holds was given by Shearer decades ago. However, little is known about that of the variable version LLL (variable-LLL) where events are generated by independent random variables, though this model of events is applicable to almost all applications of LLL. We introduce a necessary and sufficient criterion for variable-LLL, in terms of the probabilities of the events and the event-variable graph specifying the dependency among the events. Based on this new criterion, we obtain boundaries for two families of event-variable graphs, namely, cyclic and treelike bigraphs. These are the first two non-trivial cases where the variable-LLL boundary is fully determined. As a byproduct, we also provide a universal constructive method to find a set of events whose union has the maximum probability, given the probability vector and the event-variable graph. Though it is #P-hard in general to determine variable-LLL boundaries, we can to some extent decide whether a gap exists between a variable-LLL boundary and the corresponding abstract-LLL boundary. In particular, we show that the gap existence can be decided without solving Shearer's conditions or checking our variable-LLL criterion. Equipped with this powerful theorem, we show that there is no gap if the base graph of the event-variable graph is a tree, while gap appears if the base graph has an induced cycle of length at least 4. The problem is almost completely solved except when the base graph has only 3-cliques, in which case we also get partial solutions. A set of reduction rules are established that facilitate to infer gap existence of an event-variable graph from known ones. As an application, various event-variable graphs, in particular combinatorial ones, are shown to be gapful/gapless.
The binary $q$-analogue of the Fano plane has a trivial automorphism group
A $q$-analogue of a $t$-design is a set $S$ of subspaces (of dimension $k$) of a finite vector space $V$ over a field of order $q$ such that each $t$ subspace is contained in a constant $λ$ number of elements of $S$. The smallest nontrivial feasible parameters occur when $V$ has dimension $7$, $t=2$, $q=2$, and $k=3$; which is the $q$-analogue of a $2$-$(7,3,1)$ design, the Fano plane. The existence of the binary $q$-analogue of the Fano plane has yet to be resolved, and it was shown by Kiermaier et al. (2016) that such a configuration must have an automorphism group of order at most $2$. We show that the binary $q$-analogue of the Fano plane has a trivial automorphism group.
Locating-Dominating Sets of Functigraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A locating-dominating set of a graph $G$ is a dominating set of $G$ such that every vertex of $G$ outside the dominating set is uniquely identified by its neighborhood within the dominating set. The location-domination number of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a locating-dominating set in $G$. Let $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$ be the disjoint copies of a graph $G$ and $f:V(G_{1})\rightarrow V(G_{2})$ be a function. A functigraph $F^f_{G}$ consists of the vertex set $V(G_{1})\cup V(G_{2})$ and the edge set $E(G_{1})\cup E(G_{2})\cup \{uv:v=f(u)\}$. In this paper, we study the variation of the location-domination number in passing from $G$ to $F^f_{G}$ and find its sharp lower and upper bounds. We also study the location-domination number of functigraphs of the complete graphs for all possible definitions of the function $f$. We also obtain the location-domination number of functigraphs of a family of spanning subgraph of the complete graphs.

A generalization of Arc-Kayles
Published • View Publication • BIB
The game Arc-Kayles is played on an undirected graph with two players taking turns deleting an edge and its endpoints from the graph. We study a generalization of this game, Weighted Arc Kayles (WAK for short), played on graphs with counters on the vertices. The two players alternate choosing an edge and removing one counter on both endpoints. An edge can no longer be selected if any of its endpoints has no counter left. The last player to play a move wins. We give a winning strategy for WAK on trees of depth 2. Moreover, we show that the Grundy values of WAK and Arc-Kayles are unbounded. We also prove a periodicity result on the outcome of WAK when the number of counters is fixed for all the vertices but one. Finally, we show links between this game and a variation of the non-attacking queens game on a chessboard.

AG codes and AG quantum codes from cyclic extensions of the Suzuki and Ree curves

We investigate several types of linear codes constructed from two families $\tilde{\mathcal S}_q$ and $\tilde{\mathcal R}_q$ of maximal curves over finite fields recently constructed by Skabelund as cyclic covers of the Suzuki and Ree curves. Plane models for such curves are provided, and the Weierstrass semigroup $H(P)$ at an $\mathbb{F}_{q}$-rational point $P$ is shown to be symmetric.

On the number of reachable pairs in a digraph
A pair $(u, v)$ of (not necessarily distinct) vertices in a directed graph $D$ is called a reachable pair if there exists a directed path from $u$ to $v$. We define the weight of $D$ to be the number of reachable pairs of $D$, which equals the sum of the number of vertices in $D$ and the number of directed edges in the transitive closure of $D$. In this paper, we study the set $W(n)$ of possible weights of directed graphs on $n$ labeled vertices. We prove that $W(n)$ can be determined recursively and describe the integers in the set. Moreover, if $b(n) \geqslant n$ is the least integer for which there is no digraph on $n$ vertices with exactly $b(n)+1$ reachable pairs, we determine $b(n)$ exactly through a simple recursive formula and find an explicit function $g(n)$ such that $|b(n)-g(n)| < 2n$ for all $n \geqslant 3$. Using these results, we are able to approximate $|W(n)|$ -- which is quadratic in $n$ -- with an explicit function that is within $30n$ of $|W(n)|$ for all $n \geqslant 3$, thus answering a question of Rao. Since the weight of a directed graph on $n$ vertices corresponds to the number of elements in a preorder on an $n$ element set and the number of containments among the minimal open sets of a topology on an $n$ point space, our theorems are applicable to preorders and topologies.

Structural properties of edge-chromatic critical multigraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Appearing in different format, Gupta\,(1967), Goldberg\,(1973), Andersen\,(1977), and Seymour\,(1979) conjectured that if $G$ is an edge-$k$-critical graph with $k \ge Δ+1$, then $|V(G)|$ is odd and, for every edge $e$, $E(G-e)$ is a union of disjoint near-perfect matchings, where $Δ$ denotes the maximum degree of $G$. Tashkinov tree method shows that critical graphs contain a subgraph with two important properties named closed and elementary. Recently, efforts have been made in extending graphs beyond Tashkinov trees. However, these results can only keep one of the two essential properties. In this paper, we developed techniques to extend Tashkinov trees to larger subgraphs with both properties. Applying our result, we have improved almost all known results towards Goldberg's conjecture. In particular, we showed that Goldberg's conjecture holds for graph $G$ with $|V(G)| \le 39$ and $|Δ(G)| \le 39$ and Jacobsen's equivalent conjecture holds for $m \le 39$ while the previous known bound is $23$.

Sufficient conditions on cycles that make planar graphs 4-choosable
Xu and Wu proved that if every $5$-cycle of a planar graph $G$ is not simultaneously adjacent to $3$-cycles and $4$-cycles, then $G$ is $4$-choosable. In this paper, we improve this result as follows. Let $\{i, j, k, l\} = \{3,4,5,6\}.$ For any chosen $i,$ if every $i$-cycle of a planar graph $G$ is not simultaneously adjacent to $j$-cycles, $k$-cycles, and $l$-cycles, then $G$ is $4$-choosable.
