Four Edge-Independent Spanning Trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove an ear-decomposition theorem for $4$-edge-connected graphs and use it to prove that for every $4$-edge-connected graph $G$ and every $r\in V(G)$, there is a set of four spanning trees of $G$ with the following property. For every vertex in $G$, the unique paths back to $r$ in each tree are edge-disjoint. Our proof implies a polynomial-time algorithm for constructing the trees.

Polynomial-Time Algorithms for Sliding Tokens on Cactus Graphs and Block Graphs
Given two independent sets $I, J$ of a graph $G$, and imagine that a token (coin) is placed at each vertex of $I$. The Sliding Token problem asks if one could transform $I$ to $J$ via a sequence of elementary steps, where each step requires sliding a token from one vertex to one of its neighbors so that the resulting set of vertices where tokens are placed remains independent. This problem is $\mathsf{PSPACE}$-complete even for planar graphs of maximum degree $3$ and bounded-treewidth. In this paper, we show that Sliding Token can be solved efficiently for cactus graphs and block graphs, and give upper bounds on the length of a transformation sequence between any two independent sets of these graph classes. Our algorithms are designed based on two main observations. First, all structures that forbid the existence of a sequence of token slidings between $I$ and $J$, if exist, can be found in polynomial time. A sufficient condition for determining no-instances can be easily derived using this characterization. Second, without such forbidden structures, a sequence of token slidings between $I$ and $J$ does exist. In this case, one can indeed transform $I$ to $J$ (and vice versa) using a polynomial number of token-slides.

Edmonds' Branching Theorem in Digraphs without Forward-infinite Paths
Published in Journal of Graph Theory, volume 83, 3, p. 303--311, 2016 • View Publication • BIB
Let $ D $ be a finite digraph, and let $ V_0,\dots,V_{k-1} $ be nonempty subsets of $ V(D) $. The (strong form of) Edmonds' branching theorem states thatthere are pairwise edge-disjoint spanning branchings $ \mathcal{B}_0,\dots, \mathcal{B}_{k-1} $ in $ D $ such that the root set of $ \mathcal{B}_i $ is $ V_i\ (i=0,\dots,k-1) $ if and only if for all $ \varnothing \neq X\subseteq V(D) $ the number of ingoing edges of $ X $ is greater than or equal to the number of sets $ V_i $ disjoint from $ X $. As was shown by R. Aharoni and C. Thomassen in \cite{aharoni1989infinite}, this theorem does not remain true for infinite digraphs. Thomassen also proved that for the class of digraphs without backward-infinite paths, the above theorem of Edmonds remains true. Our main result is that for digraphs without forward-infinite paths, Edmonds' branching theorem remains true as well.

Bases in which some numbers have exactly two expansions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we answer several questions raised by Sidorov on the set $\mathcal B_2$ of bases in which there exist numbers with exactly two expansions. In particular, we prove that the set $\mathcal B_2$ is closed, and it contains both infinitely many isolated and accumulation points in $(1, q_{KL})$, where $q_{KL}\approx 1.78723$ is the Komornik-Loreti constant. Consequently we show that the second smallest element of $\mathcal B_2$ is the smallest accumulation point of $\mathcal B_2$. We also investigate the higher order derived sets of $\mathcal B_2$. Finally, we prove that there exists a $δ>0$ such that \begin{equation*} \dim_H(\mathcal B_2\cap(q_{KL}, q_{KL}+δ))<1, \end{equation*} where $\dim_H$ denotes the Hausdorff dimension.

Highly connected infinite digraphs without edge-disjoint back and forth paths between a certain vertex pair
Published in Journal of graph theory, volume 85, 1, p. 51--55, 2017 • View Publication • BIB
We construct for all $ k\in \mathbb{N} $ a $ k $-edge-connected digraph $ D $ with $ s,t\in V(D) $ such that there are no edge-disjoint $ s \rightarrow t $ and $t\rightarrow s $ paths. We use in our construction "self-similar" graphs which technique could be useful in other problems as well.

Orientations of 1-Factorizations and the List Chromatic Index of Small Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
As starting point, we formulate a corollary to the Quantitative Combinatorial Nullstellensatz. This corollary does not require the consideration of any coefficients of polynomials, only evaluations of polynomial functions. In certain situations, our corollary is more directly applicable and more ready-to-go than the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz itself. It is also of interest from a numerical point of view. We use it to explain a well-known connection between the sign of 1-factorizations (edge colorings) and the List Edge Coloring Conjecture. For efficient calculations and a better understanding of the sign, we then introduce and characterize the sign of single 1-factors. We show that the product over all signs of all the 1-factors in a 1-factorization is the sign of that 1-factorization. Using this result in an algorithm, we attempt to prove the List Edge Coloring Conjecture for all graphs with up to 10 vertices. This leaves us with some exceptional cases that need to be attacked with other methods.

Group actions, the Mattila integral and applications
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 147 (2019), no. 6, 2503-2516 • View Publication • BIB
The Mattila integral, $$ {\mathcal M}(μ)=\int {\left( \int_{S^{d-1}} {|\widehatμ(r ω)|}^2 dω\right)}^2 r^{d-1} dr,$$ developed by Mattila, is the main tool in the study of the Falconer distance problem. In this paper, with a very simple argument, we develop a generalized version of the Mattila integral. Our first application is to consider the product of distances $$(Δ(E))^k= \left\{\prod_{j=1}^k |x^j-y^j|: x^j, y^j\in E\right\} $$ and show that when $d\geq 2$, $(Δ(E))^k$ has positive Lebesgue measure if $\dim_{\mathcal{H}}(E)>\frac{d}{2}+\frac{1}{4k-1}$. Another application is, we prove for any $E,F,H\subset\mathbb{R}^2$, $\dim_{\mathcal{H}}(E)+\dim_{\mathcal{H}}(F)+\dim_{\mathcal{H}}(H)>4$, the set $$E\cdot(F+H)=\{x\cdot(y+z): x\in E, y\in F, z\in H\}$$ has positive Lebesgue.

On codimension two flats in Fermat-type arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the present note we study certain arrangements of codimension $2$ flats in projective spaces, we call them "Fermat arrangements". We describe algebraic properties of their defining ideals. In particular, we show that they provide counterexamples to an expected containment relation between ordinary and symbolic powers of homogeneous ideals.

Diffusion limited aggregation in the Boolean lattice
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the Diffusion Limited Aggregation (DLA) process on on $\mathbb{Z}^2$, or more generally $\mathbb{Z}^d$, particles aggregate to an initially occupied origin by arrivals on a random walk. The scaling limit of the result, empirically, is a fractal with dimension strictly less than $d$. Very little has been shown rigorously about the process, however. We study an analogous process on the Boolean lattice $\{0,1\}^n$, in which particles take random decreasing walks from $(1,\dots,1)$, and stick at the last vertex before they encounter an occupied site for the first time; the vertex $(0,\dots,0)$ is initially occupied. In this model, we can rigorously prove that lower levels of the lattice become full, and that the process ends by producing an isolated path of unbounded length reaching $(1,\dots,1)$.

Computing Tropical Prevarieties in Parallel
Published • View Publication • BIB
The computation of the tropical prevariety is the first step in the application of polyhedral methods to compute positive dimensional solution sets of polynomial systems. In particular, pretropisms are candidate leading exponents for the power series developments of the solutions. The computation of the power series may start as soon as one pretropism is available, so our parallel computation of the tropical prevariety has an application in a pipelined solver. We present a parallel implementation of dynamic enumeration. Our first distributed memory implementation with forked processes achieved good speedups, but quite often resulted in large variations in the execution times of the processes. The shared memory multithreaded version applies work stealing to reduce the variability of the run time. Our implementation applies the thread safe Parma Polyhedral Library (PPL), in exact arithmetic with the GNU Multiprecision Arithmetic Library (GMP), aided by the fast memory allocations of TCMalloc. Our parallel implementation is capable of computing the tropical prevariety of the cyclic 16-roots problem. We also report on computational experiments on the $n$-body and $n$-vortex problems; our computational results compare favorably with Gfan.

Maximum scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^4)$
There are two known families of maximum scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets in $PG(1,q^t)$: the linear sets of pseudoregulus type and for $t\geq 4$ the scattered linear sets found by Lunardon and Polverino. For $t=4$ we show that these are the only maximum scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets and we describe the orbits of these linear sets under the groups $PGL(2,q^4)$ and $PΓL(2,q^4)$.

Countable Menger theorem with finitary matroid constraints on the ingoing edges
We present a strengthening of the countable Menger theorem (edge version) of R. Aharoni. Let $ D=(V,A) $ be a countable digraph with $ s\neq t\in V $ and let $\mathcal{M}=\bigoplus_{v\in V}\mathcal{M}_v $ be a matroid on $ A $ where $ \mathcal{M}_v $ is a finitary matroid on the ingoing edges of $ v $. We show that there is a system of edge-disjoint $ s \rightarrow t $ paths $ \mathcal{P} $ such that the united edge set of the paths is $ \mathcal{M} $-independent, and there is a $ C \subseteq A $ consists of one edge from each element of $ \mathcal{P} $ for which $ \mathsf{span}_{\mathcal{M}}(C) $ covers all the $ s\rightarrow t $ paths in $ D $.

On the existence of 4-regular matchstick graphs
A matchstick graph is a planar unit-distance graph. We call it \emph{4-regular} if every vertex has degree 4. While examples of 4-regular matchstick graphs with fewer than 63 vertices are known only for $n \in \{52, 54, 57, 60\}$, we prove the existence of such graphs for every integer $n \geq 63$.

Spanning Tree Auxiliary Graphs
In this paper, we define a class of auxiliary graphs associated with simple undirected graphs. This class of auxiliary graphs is based on the set of spanning trees of the original graph and the edges constituting those spanning trees. A class of auxiliary graphs can be viewed as a function from the class of graphs to the class of graphs. We provide mathematical characterisation of graphs which are the spanning tree auxiliary graphs of some simple graph. Since the class of spanning tree auxiliary graphs of graphs do not have unique preimages (the forward function is not injective), we derive precisely the classes of graphs which have the same auxiliary graph. We design algorithms for computing a basic preimage and define rules to get other solutions for the same auxiliary graph. We also obtain several results expressing parameters of the auxiliary graph in terms of (not necessarily the same) parameters of the original graph.

Reflexive polytopes arising from partially ordered sets and perfect graphs
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 49(2019), 69--81 • View Publication • BIB
Reflexive polytopes which have the integer decomposition property are of interest. Recently, some large classes of reflexive polytopes with integer decomposition property coming from the order polytopes and the chain polytopes of finite partially ordered sets are known. In the present paper, we will generalize this result. In fact, by virtue of the algebraic technique on Gröbner bases, new classes of reflexive polytopes with the integer decomposition property coming from the order polytopes of finite partially ordered sets and the stable set polytopes of perfect graphs will be introduced. Furthermore, the result will give a polyhedral characterization of perfect graphs. Finally, we will investigate the Ehrhart $δ$-polynomials of these reflexive polytopes.
