Quadrant marked mesh patterns in 123-avoiding permutations
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2016, Permutation Patterns (August 3, 2018) dmtcs:3297 • View Publication • BIB
Given a permutation $σ= σ_1 \ldots σ_n$ in the symmetric group $\mathcal{S}_{n}$, we say that $σ_i$ matches the quadrant marked mesh pattern $\mathrm{MMP}(a,b,c,d)$ in $σ$ if there are at least $a$ points to the right of $σ_i$ in $σ$ which are greater than $σ_i$, at least $b$ points to the left of $σ_i$ in $σ$ which are greater than $σ_i$, at least $c$ points to the left of $σ_i$ in $σ$ which are smaller than $σ_i$, and at least $d$ points to the right of $σ_i$ in $σ$ which are smaller than $σ_i$. Kitaev, Remmel, and Tiefenbruck systematically studied the distribution of the number of matches of $\mathrm{MMP}(a,b,c,d)$ in 132-avoiding permutations. The operation of reverse and complement on permutations allow one to translate their results to find the distribution of the number of $\mathrm{MMP}(a,b,c,d)$ matches in 231-avoiding, 213-avoiding, and 312-avoiding permutations. In this paper, we study the distribution of the number of matches of $\mathrm{MMP}(a,b,c,d)$ in 123-avoiding permutations. We provide explicit recurrence relations to enumerate our objects which can be used to give closed forms for the generating functions associated with such distributions. In many cases, we provide combinatorial explanations of the coefficients that appear in our generating functions.

On an extremal problem for poset dimension
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $f(n)$ be the largest integer such that every poset on $n$ elements has a $2$-dimensional subposet on $f(n)$ elements. What is the asymptotics of $f(n)$? It is easy to see that $f(n)\geqslant n^{1/2}$. We improve the best known upper bound and show $f(n)=\mathcal{O}(n^{2/3})$. For higher dimensions, we show $f_d(n)=\mathcal{O}\left(n^\frac{d}{d+1}\right)$, where $f_d(n)$ is the largest integer such that every poset on $n$ elements has a $d$-dimensional subposet on $f_d(n)$ elements.

Pebbling on Jahangir graphs
The pebbling number of a graph $G$, $f(G)$, is the least $p$ such that, however $p$ pebbles are placed on the vertices of $G$, we can move a pebble to any vertex by a sequence of moves, each move taking two pebbles off one vertex and placing one on an adjacent vertex. In this paper, we will show the pebbling number of Jahangir graphs $J_{n,m}$ with $n$ even, $m\geq8$.
Graham's pebbling conjecture on Cartesian product of the middle graphs of even cycles
A pebbling move on a graph $G$ consists of taking two pebbles off one vertex and placing one on an adjacent vertex. The pebbling number of a graph $G$, denoted by $f(G)$, is the least integer $n$ such that, however $n$ pebbles are located on the vertices of $G$, we can move one pebble to any vertex by a sequence of pebbling moves. Let $M(G)$ be the middle graph of $G$. For any connected graphs $G$ and $H$, Graham conjectured that $f(G\times H)\leq f(G)f(H)$. In this paper, we give the pebbling number of some graphs and prove that Graham's conjecture holds for the middle graphs of some even cycles.
A characterization of trees having a minimum vertex cover which is also a minimum total dominating set
A vertex cover of a graph $G = (V, E)$ is a set $X \subseteq V$ such that each edge of $G$ is incident to at least one vertex of $X$. A dominating set $D \subseteq V$ is a total dominating set of $G$ if the subgraph induced by $D$ has no isolated vertices. A $(γ_t-τ)$-set of $G$ is a minimum vertex cover which is also a minimum total dominating set. In this article we give a constructive characterization of trees having a $(γ_t-τ)$-set.
Coloring Properties of Categorical Product of General Kneser Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
More than 50 years ago Hedetniemi conjectured that the chromatic number of categorical product of two graphs is equal to the minimum of their chromatic numbers. This conjecture has received a considerable attention in recent years. Hedetniemi's conjecture were generalized to hypergraphs by Zhu in 1992. Hajiabolhassan and Meunier (2016) introduced the first nontrivial lower bound for the chromatic number of categorical product of general Kneser hypergraphs and using this lower bound, they verified Zhu's conjecture for some families of hypergraphs. In this paper, we shall present some colorful type results for the coloring of categorical product of general Kneser hypergraphs, which generalize the Hajiabolhassan-Meunier result. Also, we present a new lower bound for the chromatic number of categorical product of general Kneser hypergraphs which can be extremely better than the Hajiabolhassan-Meunier lower bound. Using this lower bound, we enrich the family of hypergraphs satisfying Zhu's conjecture.

One-Dimensional Packing: Maximality Implies Rationality
Every set of natural numbers determines a generating function convergent for $q \in (-1,1)$ whose behavior as $q \rightarrow 1^-$ determines a germ. These germs admit a natural partial ordering that can be used to compare sizes of sets of natural numbers in a manner that generalizes both cardinality of finite sets and density of infinite sets. For any finite set $D$ of positive integers, call a set $S$ "$D$-avoiding" if no two elements of $S$ differ by an element of $D$. It is shown that any $D$-avoiding set that is maximal in the class of $D$-avoiding sets (with respect to germ-ordering) is ultimately periodic. This implies an analogous result for packings. It is conjectured that for all $D$ there is a unique maximal $D$-avoiding set, and that its germ is appreciably larger than the germs of all other $D$-avoiding sets.

Generating simple near-bipartite bricks
Published • View Publication • BIB
A brick is a $3$-connected graph such that the graph obtained from it by deleting any two distinct vertices has a perfect matching. A brick $G$ is near-bipartite if it has a pair of edges $α$ and $β$ such that $G-\{α,β\}$ is bipartite and matching covered; examples are $K_4$ and the triangular prism $\overline{C_6}$. The significance of near-bipartite bricks arises from the theory of ear decompositions of matching covered graphs. The object of this paper is to establish a generation procedure which is specific to the class of simple near-bipartite bricks. In particular, we prove that every simple near-bipartite brick $G$ has an edge $e$ so that the graph obtained from $G-e$ by contracting each edge that is incident with a vertex of degree two is also a simple near-bipartite brick, unless $G$ belongs to any of eight well-defined infinite families. This is a refinement of the brick generation theorem of Norine and Thomas (Generating Bricks, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2007) which is appropriate for the restricted class of near-bipartite bricks. Earlier, the first author (Generating near-bipartite bricks, J. Graph Theory, 2019) proved a similar generation theorem for (not necessarily simple) near-bipartite bricks; we deduce our main result from this theorem. Our proof is based on the strategy of Carvalho, Lucchesi and Murty (2008) and uses several of their techniques and results. The results presented here also appear in the Ph.D. thesis of the first author.
The spectral symmetry of weakly irreducible nonnegative tensors and connected hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a weakly irreducible nonnegative tensor with spectral radius $ρ(\mathcal{A})$. Let $\mathfrak{D}$ (respectively, $\mathfrak{D}^{(0)}$) be the set of normalized diagonal matrices arising from the eigenvectors of $\mathcal{A}$ corresponding to the eigenvalues with modulus $ρ(\mathcal{A})$ (respectively, the eigenvalue $ρ(\mathcal{A})$). It is shown that $\mathfrak{D}$ is an abelian group containing $\mathfrak{D}^{(0)}$ as a subgroup, which acts transitively on the set $\{e^{\mathbf{i} \frac{2 πj}{\ell}}\mathcal{A}:j =0,1, \ldots,\ell-1\}$, where $|\mathfrak{D}/\mathfrak{D}^{(0)}|=\ell$ and $\mathfrak{D}^{(0)}$ is the stabilizer of $\mathcal{A}$. The spectral symmetry of $\mathcal{A}$ is characterized by the group $\mathfrak{D}/\mathfrak{D}^{(0)}$, and $\mathcal{A}$ is called spectral $\ell$-symmetric. We obtain the structural information of $\mathcal{A}$ by analyzing the property of $\mathfrak{D}$, especially for connected hypergraphs we get some results on the edge distribution and coloring. If moreover $\mathcal{A}$ is symmetric, we prove that $\mathcal{A}$ is spectral $\ell$-symmetric if and only if it is $(m,\ell)$-colorable. We characterize the spectral $\ell$-symmetry of a tensor by using its generalized traces, and show that for an arbitrarily given integer $m \ge 3$ and each positive integer $\ell$ with $\ell \mid m$, there always exists an $m$-uniform hypergraph $G$ such that $G$ is spectral $\ell$-symmetric.

On partitioning the edges of an infinite digraph into directed cycles
Nash-Williams proved that for an undirected graph $ G $ the set $ E(G) $ can be partitioned into cycles if and only if every cut has either even or infinite number of edges. Later C. Thomassen gave a simpler proof for this and conjectured the following directed analogue of the theorem: the edge set of a digraph can be partitioned into directed cycles if and only if for each subset of the vertices the cardinality of the ingoing and the outgoing edges are equal. The aim of the paper is to prove this conjecture.
On consecutive pattern-avoiding permutations of length 4, 5 and beyond
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2016, Permutation Patterns (February 26, 2018) dmtcs:3311 • View Publication • BIB
We review and extend what is known about the generating functions for consecutive pattern-avoiding permutations of length 4, 5 and beyond, and their asymptotic behaviour. There are respectively, seven length-4 and twenty-five length-5 consecutive-Wilf classes. D-finite differential equations are known for the reciprocal of the exponential generating functions for four of the length-4 and eight of the length-5 classes. We give the solutions of some of these ODEs. An unsolved functional equation is known for one more class of length-4, length-5 and beyond. We give the solution of this functional equation, and use it to show that the solution is not D-finite. For three further length-5 c-Wilf classes we give recurrences for two and a differential-functional equation for a third. For a fourth class we find a new algebraic solution. We give a polynomial-time algorithm to generate the coefficients of the generating functions which is faster than existing algorithms, and use this to (a) calculate the asymptotics for all classes of length 4 and length 5 to significantly greater precision than previously, and (b) use these extended series to search, unsuccessfully, for D-finite solutions for the unsolved classes, leading us to conjecture that the solutions are not D-finite. We have also searched, unsuccessfully, for differentially algebraic solutions.

Unimodular hierarchical models and their Graver bases
Published in Journal of Algebraic Statistics 8 (2017), no. 2, 29-43 • View Publication • BIB
Given a simplicial complex whose vertices are labeled with positive integers, one can associate a vector configuration whose corresponding toric variety is the Zariski closure of a hierarchical model. We classify all the vertex-weighted simplicial complexes that give rise to unimodular vector configurations. We also provide a combinatorial characterization of their Graver bases.

The Doyen-Wilson theorem for 3-sun systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
A solution to the existence problem of G-designs with given subdesigns is known when G is a triangle with p=0,1, or 2 disjoint pendent edges: for p=0, it is due to Doyen and Wilson, the first to pose such a problem for Steiner triple systems; for p=1 and p=2, the corresponding designs are kite systems and bull designs, respectively. Here, a complete solution to the problem is given in the remaining case where G is a 3-sun, i.e. a graph on six vertices consisting of a triangle with three pendent edges which form a 1-factor.

On diregular digraphs with degree two and excess two
Published • View Publication • BIB
An important topic in the design of efficient networks is the construction of $(d,k,+ε)$-digraphs, i.e. $k$-geodetic digraphs with minimum out-degree $\geq d$ and order $M(d,k)+ ε$, where $M(d,k)$ represents the Moore bound for degree $d$ and diameter $k$ and $ε> 0$ is the (small) excess of the digraph. Previous work has shown that there are no $(2,k,+1)$-digraphs for $k \geq 2$. In a separate paper, the present author has shown that any $(2,k,+2)$-digraph must be diregular for $k \geq 2$. In the present work, this analysis is completed by proving the nonexistence of diregular $(2,k,+2)$-digraphs for $k \geq 3$ and classifying diregular $(2,2,+2)$-digraphs up to isomorphism.

Bulk Eigenvalue Correlation Statistics of Random Biregular Bipartite Graphs
This paper is the second chapter of three of the author's undergraduate thesis. In this paper, we consider the random matrix ensemble given by $(d_b, d_w)$-regular graphs on $M$ black vertices and $N$ white vertices, where $d_b \in [N^γ, N^{2/3 - γ}]$ for any $γ> 0$. We simultaneously prove that the bulk eigenvalue correlation statistics for both normalized adjacency matrices and their corresponding covariance matrices are stable for short times. Combined with an ergodicity analysis of the Dyson Brownian motion in another paper, this proves universality of bulk eigenvalue correlation statistics, matching normalized adjacency matrices with the GOE and the corresponding covariance matrices with the Gaussian Wishart Ensemble.

Piercing axis-parallel boxes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\F$ be a finite family of axis-parallel boxes in $\R^d$ such that $\F$ contains no $k+1$ pairwise disjoint boxes. We prove that if $\F$ contains a subfamily $\M$ of $k$ pairwise disjoint boxes with the property that for every $F\in \F$ and $M\in \M$ with $F \cap M \neq \emptyset$, either $F$ contains a corner of $M$ or $M$ contains $2^{d-1}$ corners of $F$, then $\F$ can be pierced by $O(k)$ points. One consequence of this result is that if $d=2$ and the ratio between any of the side lengths of any box is bounded by a constant, then $\F$ can be pierced by $O(k)$ points. We further show that if for each two intersecting boxes in $\F$ a corner of one is contained in the other, then $\F$ can be pierced by at most $O(k\log\log(k))$ points, and in the special case where $\F$ contains only cubes this bound improves to $O(k)$.

Elliptic hypergeometric functions associated with root systems
Published in Chapter 6 (pp. 159-186) of Encyclopedia of Special Functions, The Askey-Bateman Project, Volume II, Multivariable Special Functions Tom H. Koornwinder and Jasper V. Stokman, editors, Cambridge University Press, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
We give a survey of elliptic hypergeometric functions associated with root systems, comprised of three main parts. The first two form in essence an annotated table of the main evaluation and transformation formulas for elliptic hypergeometric integeral and series on root systems. The third and final part gives an introduction to Rains' elliptic Macdonald-Koornwinder theory (in part also developed by Coskun and Gustafson).

Kernels by properly colored paths in arc-colored digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A {\em kernel by properly colored paths} of an arc-colored digraph $D$ is a set $S$ of vertices of $D$ such that (i) no two vertices of $S$ are connected by a properly colored directed path in $D$, and (ii) every vertex outside $S$ can reach $S$ by a properly colored directed path in $D$. In this paper, we conjecture that every arc-colored digraph with all cycles properly colored has such a kernel and verify the conjecture for unicyclic digraphs, semi-complete digraphs and bipartite tournaments, respectively. Moreover, weaker conditions for the latter two classes of digraphs are given.

Equating two maximum degrees
Given a graph $G$, we would like to find (if it exists) the largest induced subgraph $H$ in which there are at least $k$ vertices realizing the maximum degree of $H$. This problem was first posed by Caro and Yuster. They proved, for example, that for every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices we can guarantee, for $k = 2$, such an induced subgraph $H$ by deleting at most $2\sqrt{n}$ vertices, but the question if $2\sqrt{n}$ is best possible remains open. Among the results obtained in this paper we prove that: 1. For every graph $G$ on $n \geq 4$ vertices we can delete at most $\lceil \frac{- 3 + \sqrt{ 8n- 15}}{2 } \rceil$ vertices to get an induced subgraph $H$ with at least two vertices realizing $Δ(H)$, and this bound is sharp, solving the problems left open by Caro and Yuster. 2.For every graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\geq 1$ we can delete at most $\lceil \frac{ -3 + \sqrt{8Δ+1}}{2 } \rceil$ vertices to get an induced subgraph $H$ with at least two vertices realizing $Δ(H)$, and this bound is sharp. 3. Every graph $G$ with $Δ(G) \leq 2$ and least $2k - 1$ vertices (respectively $2k - 2$ vertices if k is even) contains an induced subgraph $H$ in which at least $k$ vertices realise $Δ(H)$, and these bound are sharp.

The Graovac-Pisanski Index of Armchair Nanotubes
Published in J. Math. Chem. 56 (2018) 1103-1116 • View Publication • BIB
The Graovac-Pisanski index, which is also called the modified Wiener index, considers the symmetries and the distances in molecular graphs. Carbon nanotubes are molecules made of carbon with a cylindrical structure possessing unusual valuable properties. In a mathematical model we can consider them as a subgraph of a hexagonal lattice embedded on a cylinder with some vertices being identified. In the present paper, we investigate the automorphisms and the orbits of armchair nanotubes and derive the closed formulas for their Graovac-Pisanski index.
