Sudoku Rectangle Completion
Over the last decade, Sudoku, a combinatorial number-placement puzzle, has become a favorite pastimes of many all around the world. In this puzzle, the task is to complete a partially filled $9 \times 9$ square with numbers 1 through 9, subject to the constraint that each number must appear once in each row, each column, and each of the nine $3 \times 3$ blocks. Sudoku squares can be considered a subclass of the well-studied class of Latin squares. In this paper, we study natural extensions of a classical result on Latin square completion to Sudoku squares. Furthermore, we use the procedure developed in the proof to obtain asymptotic bounds on the number of Sudoku squares of order $n$.

A word property for twisted involutions in Coxeter groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given an involutive automorphism $θ$ of a Coxeter system $(W,S)$, let $\mathfrak{I}(θ) \subseteq W$ denote the set of twisted involutions. We provide a minimal set of moves that can be added to the braid moves, in order to connect all reduced $\underline{S}$-expressions (also known as admissible sequences, reduced $I_θ$-expressions, or involution words) for any given $w \in \mathfrak{I}(θ)$. This can be viewed as an analogue of the well-known word property for Coxeter groups. It improves upon a result of Hamaker, Marberg, and Pawlowski, and generalises similar statements valid in certain types due to Hu, Zhang, Wu, and Marberg.

Metrically Ramsey ultrafilters
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a metric space $(X,d)$, we say that a mapping $χ: [X]^{2}\longrightarrow\{0.1\}$ is an isometric coloring if $d(x,y)=d(z,t)$ implies $χ(\{x,y\})=χ(\{z,t\})$. A free ultrafilter $\mathcal{U}$ on an infinite metric space $(X,d)$ is called metrically Ramsey if, for every isometric coloring $χ$ of $[X]^{2}$, there is a member $U\in\mathcal{U}$ such that the set $[U]^{2}$ is $χ$-monochrome. We prove that each infinite ultrametric space $(X,d)$ has a countable subset $Y$ such that each free ultrafilter $\mathcal{U}$ on $X$ satisfying $Y\in\mathcal{U}$ is metrically Ramsey. On the other hand, it is an open question whether every metrically Ramsey ultrafilter on the natural numbers $\mathbb{N}$ with the metric $|x-y|$ is a Ramsey ultrafilter. We prove that every metrically Ramsey ultrafilter $\mathcal{U}$ on $\mathbb{N}$ has a member with no arithmetic progression of length 2, and if $\mathcal{U}$ has a thin member then there is a mapping $f:\mathbb{N}\longrightarrowω$ such that $f(\mathcal{U})$ is a Ramsey ultrafilter.

Some New Balanced and Almost Balanced Quaternary Sequences with Low Autocorrelation
Published • View Publication • BIB
Quaternary sequences of both even and odd period having low autocorrelation are studied. We construct new families of balanced quaternary sequences of odd period and low autocorrelation using cyclotomic classes of order eight, as well as investigate the linear complexity of some known quaternary sequences of odd period. We discuss a construction given by Chung et al. in "New Quaternary Sequences with Even Period and Three-Valued Autocorrelation" [IEICE Trans. Fundamentals Vol. E93-A, No. 1 (2010)] first by pointing out a slight modification (thereby obtaining new families of balanced and almost balanced quaternary sequences of even period and low autocorrelation), then by showing that, in certain cases, this slight modification greatly simplifies the construction given by Shen et al. in "New Families of Balanced Quaternary Sequences of Even Period with Three-level Optimal Autocorrelation" [IEEE Comm. Letters DOI10.1109/LCOMM.2017.26611750 (2017)]. We investigate the linear complexity of these sequences as well.
Embeddability of arrangements of pseudocircles and graphs on surfaces
A pseudocircle is a simple closed curve on some surface; an arrangement of pseudocircles is a collection of pseudocircles that pairwise intersect in exactly two points, at which they cross. Ortner proved that an arrangement of pseudocircles is embeddable into the sphere if and only if all of its subarrangements of size at most four are embeddable into the sphere, and asked if an analogous result holds for embeddability into orientable surfaces of higher genus. We answer this question positively: An arrangement of pseudocircles is embeddable into an orientable surface of genus~$g$ if and only if all of its subarrangements of size at most $4g+4$ are. Moreover, this bound is tight. We actually have similar results for a much general notion of arrangement, which we call an \emph{arrangement of graphs}.

Residual $q$-Fano Planes and Related Structures
Published • View Publication • BIB
One of the most intriguing problems, in $q$-analogs of designs, is the existence question of an infinite family of $q$-analog of Steiner systems, known also as $q$-Steiner systems, (spreads not included) in general, and the existence question for the $q$-analog of the Fano plane, known also as the $q$-Fano plane, in particular. These questions are in the front line of open problems in block design. There was a common belief and a conjecture that such structures do not exist. Only recently, $q$-Steiner systems were found for one set of parameters. In this paper, a definition for the $q$-analog of the residual design is presented. This new definition is different from previous known definition, but its properties reflect better the $q$-analog properties. The existence of a design with the parameters of the residual $q$-Steiner system in general and the residual $q$-Fano plane in particular are examined. We prove the existence of the residual $q$-Fano plane for all $q$, where $q$ is a prime power. The constructed structure is just one step from a construction of a $q$-Fano plane.
System of unbiased representatives for a collection of bicolorings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{B}$ denote a set of bicolorings of $[n]$, where each bicoloring is a mapping of the points in $[n]$ to $\{-1,+1\}$. For each $B \in \mathcal{B}$, let $Y_B=(B(1),\ldots,B(n))$. For each $A \subseteq [n]$, let $X_A \in \{0,1\}^n$ denote the incidence vector of $A$. A non-empty set $A$ is said to be an `unbiased representative' for a bicoloring $B \in \mathcal{B}$ if $\left\langle X_A,Y_B\right\rangle =0$. Given a set $\mathcal{B}$ of bicolorings, we study the minimum cardinality of a family $\mathcal{A}$ consisting of subsets of $[n]$ such that every bicoloring in $\mathcal{B}$ has an unbiased representative in $\mathcal{A}$.

Complete diagrammatics of the single ring theorem
Published in Phys. Rev. E 96, 042149 (2017) • View Publication • BIB
Using diagrammatic techniques, we provide explicit functional relations between the cumulant generating functions for the biunitarily invariant ensembles in the limit of large size of matrices. The formalism allows to map two distinct areas of free random variables: Hermitian positive definite operators and non-normal R-diagonal operators. We also rederive the Haagerup-Larsen theorem and show how its recent extension to the eigenvector correlation function appears naturally within this approach.

Lattices and quadratic forms from tight frames in Euclidean spaces
This paper supplies additions to our paper in Linear Algebra Appl. 510 (2016) 395--420 on integral spans of tight frames in Euclidean spaces. In that previous paper, we considered the case of an equiangular tight frame (ETF), proving that if its integral span is a lattice then the frame must be rational, but overlooking a simple argument in the reverse direction. Thus our first result here is that the integral span of an ETF is a lattice if and only if the frame is rational. Further, we discuss conditions under which such lattices are eutactic and perfect and, consequently, are local maxima of the packing density function in the dimension of their span. In particular, the unit (276, 23) equiangular tight frame is shown to be eutactic and perfect. More general tight frames and their norm-forms are considered as well, and definitive results are obtained in dimensions two and three.

Alternating Sign Matrices and Hypermatrices, and a Generalization of Latin Square
Published • View Publication • BIB
An alternating sign matrix, or ASM, is a $(0, \pm 1)$-matrix where the nonzero entries in each row and column alternate in sign. We generalize this notion to hypermatrices: an $n\times n\times n$ hypermatrix $A=[a_{ijk}]$ is an {\em alternating sign hypermatrix}, or ASHM, if each of its planes, obtained by fixing one of the three indices, is an ASM. Several results concerning ASHMs are shown, such as finding the maximum number of nonzeros of an $n\times n\times n$ ASHM, and properties related to Latin squares. Moreover, we investigate completion problems, in which one asks if a subhypermatrix can be completed (extended) into an ASHM. We show several theorems of this type.

Constructing and Counting Hexaflexagons
Foldable paper constructions known as flexagons have been studied since 1939. In this paper we review the construction of hexagonal flexagons (hexaflexagons) and compute the number of distinct hexaflexagons with n faces.
Tight bounds on the coefficients of partition functions via stability
Published • View Publication • BIB
Partition functions arise in statistical physics and probability theory as the normalizing constant of Gibbs measures and in combinatorics and graph theory as graph polynomials. For instance the partition functions of the hard-core model and monomer-dimer model are the independence and matching polynomials respectively. We show how stability results follow naturally from the recently developed occupancy method for maximizing and minimizing physical observables over classes of regular graphs, and then show these stability results can be used to obtain tight extremal bounds on the individual coefficients of the corresponding partition functions. As applications, we prove new bounds on the number of independent sets and matchings of a given size in regular graphs. For large enough graphs and almost all sizes, the bounds are tight and confirm the Upper Matching Conjecture of Friedland, Krop, and Markström and a conjecture of Kahn on independent sets for a wide range of parameters. Additionally we prove tight bounds on the number of $q$-colorings of cubic graphs with a given number of monochromatic edges, and tight bounds on the number of independent sets of a given size in cubic graphs of girth at least $5$.

A structure theorem for product sets in extra special groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hegyvári and Hennecart showed that if $B$ is a sufficiently large brick of a Heisenberg group, then the product set $B\cdot B$ contains many cosets of the center of the group. We give a new, robust proof of this theorem that extends to all extra special groups as well as to a large family of quasigroups.

A bijection between the set of nesting-similarity classes and L & P matchings
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2016, Permutation Patterns (January 22, 2018) dmtcs:3291 • View Publication • BIB
Matchings are frequently used to model RNA secondary structures; however, not all matchings can be realized as RNA motifs. One class of matchings, called the L $\&$ P matchings, is the most restrictive model for RNA secondary structures in the Largest Hairpin Family (LHF). The L $\&$ P matchings were enumerated in $2015$ by Jefferson, and they are equinumerous with the set of nesting-similarity classes of matchings, enumerated by Klazar. We provide a bijection between these two sets. This bijection preserves noncrossing matchings, and preserves the sequence obtained reading left to right of whether an edge begins or ends at that vertex.

List colourings of multipartite hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $χ_l(G)$ denote the list chromatic number of the $r$-uniform hypergraph~$G$. Extending a result of Alon for graphs, Saxton and the second author used the method of containers to prove that, if $G$ is simple and $d$-regular, then $χ_l(G)\ge (1/(r-1)+o(1))\log_r d$. To see how close this inequality is to best possible, we examine $χ_l(G)$ when $G$ is a random $r$-partite hypergraph with $n$ vertices in each class. The value when $r=2$ was determined by Alon and Krivelevich, here we show that $χ_l(G)= (g(r,α)+o(1))\log_r d$ almost surely, where $d$ is the expected average degree of~$G$ and $α=\log_nd$. The function $g(r,α)$ is defined in terms of "preference orders" and can be determined fairly explicitly. This is enough to show that the container method gives an optimal lower bound on $χ_l(G)$ for $r=2$ and $r=3$, but, perhaps surprisingly, apparently not for $r\ge4$.

Note on the union-closed sets conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
The union-closed sets conjecture states that if a family of sets $\mathcal{A} \neq \{\emptyset\}$ is union-closed, then there is an element which belongs to at least half the sets in $\mathcal{A}$. In 2001, D. Reimer showed that the average set size of a union-closed family, $\mathcal{A}$, is at least $\frac{1}{2} \log_2 |\mathcal{A}|$. In order to do so, he showed that all union-closed families satisfy a particular condition, which in turn implies the preceding bound. Here, answering a question raised in the context of T. Gowers' polymath project on the union-closed sets conjecture, we show that Reimer's condition alone is not enough to imply that there is an element in at least half the sets.

Dual equivalence graphs II: Transformations on locally Schur positive graphs
Dual equivalence graphs are a powerful tool in symmetric function theory that provide a general framework for proving that a given quasisymmetric function is symmetric and Schur positive. In this paper, we study a larger family of graphs that includes dual equivalence graphs and define maps that, in certain cases, transform graphs in this larger family into dual equivalence graphs. This allows us to broaden the applications of dual equivalence graphs and points the way toward a broader theory that could solve many important, long-standing Schur positivity problems.

A new lower bound for the chromatic number of general Kneser hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A general Kneser hypergraph ${\rm KG}^r(\mathcal{H})$ is an $r$-uniform hypergraph that somehow encodes the edge intersections of a ground hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$. The colorability defect of $\mathcal{H}$ is a combinatorial parameter providing a lower bound for the chromatic number of ${\rm KG}^r(\mathcal{H})$ which is addressed in a series of works by Dol'nikov [Sibirskii Matematicheskii Zhurnal, 1988}], Kříž [Transaction of the American Mathematical Society, 1992], and Ziegler~[Inventiones Mathematicae, 2002]. In this paper, we define a new combinatorial parameter, the equitable colorability defect of hypergraphs, which provides some common improvements of these works. Roughly speaking, we propose a new lower bound for the chromatic number of general Kneser hypergraphs which substantially improves Ziegler's lower bound. It is always as good as Ziegler's lower bound and we provide several families of hypergraphs for which the difference between these two lower bounds is arbitrary large. This specializes to a substantial improvement of the Dol'nikov-Kříž lower bound for the chromatic number of general Kneser hypergraphs as well. Furthermore, we prove a result ensuring the existence of a colorful subhypergraph in any proper coloring of general Kneser hypergraphs which strengthens Meunier's result [The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2014].

Equivalence classes of mesh patterns with a dominating pattern
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2016, Permutation Patterns (February 9, 2018) dmtcs:3283 • View Publication • BIB
Two mesh patterns are coincident if they are avoided by the same set of permutations, and are Wilf-equivalent if they have the same number of avoiders of each length. We provide sufficient conditions for coincidence of mesh patterns, when only permutations also avoiding a longer classical pattern are considered. Using these conditions we completely classify coincidences between families containing a mesh pattern of length 2 and a classical pattern of length 3. Furthermore, we completely Wilf-classify mesh patterns of length 2 inside the class of 231-avoiding permutations.
