T-joins in infinite graphs as edge-disjoint system of paths matching the vertices in $ T $
We characterize the class of infinite connected graphs $ G $ for which there exists a $ T $-join for any choice of an infinite $ T \subseteq V(G) $. We also show that the following well-known fact remains true in the infinite case. If $ G $ is connected and does not contain a $ T $-join, then it will if we either remove an arbitrary vertex from $ T $ or add any new vertex to $ T $.
Packing tree degree sequences
We consider special cases of the two tree degree sequences problem. We show that if two tree degree sequences do not have common leaves then they always have edge-disjoint caterpillar realizations. By using a probabilistic method, we prove that two tree degree sequences always have edge-disjoint realizations if each vertex is a leaf in at least one of the trees. This theorem can be extended to more trees: we show that the edge packing problem is in P for an arbitrary number of tree sequences with the property that each vertex is a non-leaf in at most one of the trees. We also consider the following variant of the degree matrix problem: given two degree sequences $D_1$ and $D_2$ such that $D_2$ is a tree degree sequence, decide if there exists edge-disjoint realizations of $D_1$ and $D_2$ where the realization of $D_2$ is not necessarily a tree. We show that this problem is already $\NP$-complete. Counting, or just estimating the number of distinct realizations of degree sequences is challenging in general. We show that efficient approximations for the number of solutions as well as an almost uniform sampler exist for two tree degree sequences if each vertex is a leaf in at least one of the trees.

Bootstrap percolation in random $k$-uniform hypergraphs
Published in Electronic Notes in Discrete Mathematics 49 (2015) 595-601 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate bootstrap percolation with infection threshold $r> 1$ on the binomial $k$-uniform random hypergraph $H_k(n,p)$ in the regime $n^{-1}\ll n^{k-2}p \ll n^{-1/r}$, when the initial set of infected vertices is chosen uniformly at random from all sets of given size. We establish a threshold such that if there are less vertices in the initial set of infected vertices, then whp only a few additional vertices become infected, while if the initial set of infected vertices exceeds the threshold then whp almost every vertex becomes infected. In addition, for $k=2$, we show that the probability of failure decreases exponentially.

On the radius and the attachment number of tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs
Published in Published in Discrete Mathematics, Vol 340, Issue 12, 2017 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study the relationship between the radius $r$ and the attachment number $a$ of a tetravalent graph admitting a half-arc-transitive group of automorphisms. These two parameters were first introduced in~[{\em J.~Combin.~Theory Ser.~B} {73} (1998), 41--76], where among other things it was proved that $a$ always divides $2r$. Intrigued by the empirical data from the census~[{\em Ars Math.\ Contemp.} {8} (2015)] of all such graphs of order up to 1000 we pose the question of whether all examples for which $a$ does not divide $r$ are arc-transitive. We prove that the answer to this question is positive in the case when $a$ is twice an odd number. In addition, we completely characterize the tetravalent graphs admitting a half-arc-transitive group with $r = 3$ and $a=2$, and prove that they arise as non-sectional split $2$-fold covers of line graphs of $2$-arc-transitive cubic graphs.

Symmetry properties of generalized graph truncations
Published in Published in Journal of Comb. Theory, Ser. B, Vol 137, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
In the generalized truncation construction, one replaces each vertex of a $k$-regular graph $Γ$ with a copy of a graph $Υ$ of order $k$. We investigate the symmetry properties of the graphs constructed in this way, especially in connection to the symmetry properties of the graphs $Γ$ and $Υ$ used in the construction. We demonstrate the usefulness of our results by using them to obtain a classification of cubic vertex-transitive graphs of girths $3$, $4$, and $5$.

Tensor valuations on lattice polytopes
Published in Adv. Math. 319 (2017), 76-110 • View Publication • BIB
The Ehrhart polynomial and the reciprocity theorems by Ehrhart \& Macdonald are extended to tensor valuations on lattice polytopes. A complete classification is established of tensor valuations of rank up to eight that are equivariant with respect to the special linear group over the integers and translation covariant. Every such valuation is a linear combination of the Ehrhart tensors which is shown to no longer hold true for rank nine.

Rainbow spanning trees in properly coloured complete graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this short note, we study pairwise edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees in properly edge-coloured complete graphs, where a graph is rainbow if its edges have distinct colours. Brualdi and Hollingsworth conjectured that every $K_n$ properly edge-coloured by $n-1$ colours has $n/2$ edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees. Kaneko, Kano and Suzuki later suggested this should hold for every properly edge-coloured $K_n$. Improving the previous best known bound, we show that every properly edge-coloured $K_n$ contains $Ω(n)$ pairwise edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees. Independently, Pokrovskiy and Sudakov recently proved that every properly edge-coloured $K_n$ contains $Ω(n)$ isomorphic pairwise edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees.

Random Čech Complexes on Riemannian Manifolds
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study the homology of a random Cech complex generated by a homogeneous Poisson process in a compact Riemannian manifold M. In particular, we focus on the phase transition for "homological connectivity" where the homology of the complex becomes isomorphic to that of M. The results presented in this paper are an important generalization of [7], from the flat torus to general compact Riemannian manifolds. In addition to proving the statements related to homological connectivity, the methods we develop in this paper can be used as a framework for translating results for random geometric graphs and complexes from the Euclidean setting into the more general Riemannian one.
Coloring dense digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The chromatic number of a digraph $D$ is the minimum number of acyclic subgraphs covering the vertex set of $D$. A tournament $H$ is a hero if every $H$-free tournament $T$ has chromatic number bounded by a function of $H$. Inspired by the celebrated Erdős--Hajnal conjecture, Berger et al. fully characterized the class of heroes in 2013. We extend this framework to dense digraphs: A digraph $H$ is a superhero if every $H$-free digraph $D$ has chromatic number bounded by a function of $H$ and $α(D)$, the independence number of the underlying graph of $D$. We prove here that a digraph is a superhero if and only if it is a hero, and hence characterize all superheroes. This answers a question of Aboulker, Charbit and Naserasr.

Alternation acyclic tournaments
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define a tournament to be alternation acyclic if it does not contain a cycle in which descents and ascents alternate. Using a result by Athanasiadis on hyperplane arrangements, we show that these tournaments are counted by the median Genocchi numbers. By establishing a bijection with objects defined by Dumont, we show that alternation acyclic tournaments in which at least one ascent begins at each vertex, except for the largest one, are counted by the Genocchi numbers of the first kind. Unexpected consequences of our results include a pair of ordinary generating function formulas for the Genocchi numbers of both kinds and a new very simple model for the normalized median Genocchi numbers.

Hitting minors on bounded treewidth graphs. I. General upper bounds
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a finite collection of graphs ${\cal F}$, the ${\cal F}$-M-DELETION problem consists in, given a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, deciding whether there exists $S \subseteq V(G)$ with $|S| \leq k$ such that $G \setminus S$ does not contain any of the graphs in ${\cal F}$ as a minor. We are interested in the parameterized complexity of ${\cal F}$-M-DELETION when the parameter is the treewidth of $G$, denoted by $tw$. Our objective is to determine, for a fixed ${\cal F}$, the smallest function $f_{\cal F}$ such that {${\cal F}$-M-DELETION can be solved in time $f_{\cal F}(tw) \cdot n^{O(1)}$ on $n$-vertex graphs. We prove that $f_{\cal F}(tw) = 2^{2^{O(tw \cdot\log tw)}}$ for every collection ${\cal F}$, that $f_{\cal F}(tw) = 2^{O(tw \cdot\log tw)}$ if ${\cal F}$ contains a planar graph, and that $f_{\cal F}(tw) = 2^{O(tw)}$ if in addition the input graph $G$ is planar or embedded in a surface. We also consider the version of the problem where the graphs in ${\cal F}$ are forbidden as topological minors, called ${\cal F}$-TM-DELETION. We prove similar results for this problem, except that in the last two algorithms, instead of requiring ${\cal F}$ to contain a planar graph, we need it to contain a subcubic planar graph. This is the first of a series of articles on this topic.

Classification of empty lattice $4$-simplices of width larger than two
Published in Transactions Amer. Math. Soc., 371:9 (May 2019), 6605-6625 • View Publication • BIB
A lattice $d$-simplex is the convex hull of $d+1$ affinely independent integer points in ${\mathbb R}^d$. It is called empty if it contains no lattice point apart of its $d+1$ vertices. The classification of empty $3$-simplices is known since 1964 (White), based on the fact that they all have width one. But for dimension $4$ no complete classification is known. Haase and Ziegler (2000) enumerated all empty $4$-simplices up to determinant 1000 and based on their results conjectured that after determinant $179$ all empty $4$-simplices have width one or two. We prove this conjecture as follows: - We show that no empty $4$-simplex of width three or more can have determinant greater than 5058, by combining the recent classification of hollow 3-polytopes (Averkov, Krümpelmann and Weltge, 2017) with general methods from the geometry of numbers. - We continue the computations of Haase and Ziegler up to determinant 7600, and find that no new $4$-simplices of width larger than two arise. In particular, we give the whole list of empty $4$-simplices of width larger than two, which is as computed by Haase and Ziegler: There is a single empty $4$-simplex of width four (of determinant 101), and 178 empty $4$-simplices of width three, with determinants ranging from 41 to 179.

Relaxations of GF$(4)$-representable matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the GF$(4)$-representable matroids with a circuit-hyperplane such that the matroid obtained by relaxing the circuit-hyperplane is also GF$(4)$-representable. We characterize the structure of these matroids as an application of structure theorems for the classes of $U_{2,4}$-fragile and $\{U_{2,5},U_{3,5}\}$-fragile matroids. In addition, we characterize the forbidden submatrices in GF$(4)$-representations of these matroids.

On 1-uniqueness and dense critical graphs for tree-depth
Published in Discrete Mathematics, vol. 341 (2018), no. 7, pp. 1973-1982 • View Publication • BIB
The tree-depth of $G$ is the smallest value of $k$ for which a labeling of the vertices of $G$ with elements from $\{1,\dots,k\}$ exists such that any path joining two vertices with the same label contains a vertex having a higher label. The graph $G$ is $k$-critical if it has tree-depth $k$ and every proper minor of $G$ has smaller tree-depth. Motivated by a conjecture on the maximum degree of $k$-critical graphs, we consider the property of 1-uniqueness, wherein any vertex of a critical graph can be the unique vertex receiving label 1 in an optimal labeling. Contrary to an earlier conjecture, we construct examples of critical graphs that are not 1-unique and show that 1-unique graphs can have arbitrarily many more edges than certain critical spanning subgraphs. We also show that $(n-1)$-critical graphs are 1-unique and use 1-uniqueness to show that the Andrásfai graphs are critical with respect to tree-depth.
The Competition of Roughness and Curvature in Area-Constrained Polymer Models
Published • View Publication • BIB
The competition between local Brownian roughness and global parabolic curvature experienced in many random interface models reflects an important aspect of the KPZ universality class. It may be summarised by an exponent triple $(1/2,1/3,2/3)$ representing local interface fluctuation, local roughness (or inward deviation) and convex hull facet length. The three effects arise, for example, in droplets in planar Ising models (Alexander, '01, Hammond, '11,'12). In this article, we offer a new perspective on this phenomenon. We consider directed last passage percolation model in the plane, a paradigmatic example in the KPZ universality class, and constrain the maximizing path under the additional requirement of enclosing an atypically large area. The interface suffers a constraint of parabolic curvature as before, but now its local structure is the KPZ fixed point polymer's rather than Brownian. The local interface fluctuation exponent is thus two-thirds rather than one-half. We prove that the facet lengths of the constrained path's convex hull are governed by an exponent of $3/4$, and inward deviation by an exponent of $1/2$. That is, the exponent triple is now $(2/3,1/2,3/4)$ in place of $(1/2,1/3,2/3)$. This phenomenon appears to be shared among various isoperimetrically extremal circuits in local randomness. Indeed, we formulate a conjecture to this effect concerning such circuits in supercritical percolation, whose Wulff-like first-order behaviour was recently established (Biskup, Louidor, Procaccia and Rosenthal, '12).

Dimer models on cylinders over Dynkin diagrams and cluster algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we describe a general setting for dimer models on cylinders over Dynkin diagrams which in type A reduces to the well studied case of dimer models on a disc. We prove that all Berenstein--Fomin--Zelevinsky quivers for Schubert cells in a symmetric Kac--Moody algebra give rise to dimer models on the cylinder over the corresponding Dynkin diagram. We also give an independent proof of a result of Buan, Iyama, Reiten and Smith that the corresponding superpotentials are rigid using the dimer model structure of the quivers.

Relation between the skew-rank of an oriented graph and the independence number of its underlying graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
An oriented graph $G^σ$ is a digraph without loops or multiple arcs whose underlying graph is $G$. Let $S\left(G^σ\right)$ be the skew-adjacency matrix of $G^σ$ and $α(G)$ be the independence number of $G$. The rank of $S(G^σ)$ is called the skew-rank of $G^σ$, denoted by $sr(G^σ)$. Wong et al. [European J. Combin. 54 (2016) 76-86] studied the relationship between the skew-rank of an oriented graph and the rank of its underlying graph. In this paper, the correlation involving the skew-rank, the independence number, and some other parameters are considered. First we show that $sr(G^σ)+2α(G)\geqslant 2|V_G|-2d(G)$, where $|V_G|$ is the order of $G$ and $d(G)$ is the dimension of cycle space of $G$. We also obtain sharp lower bounds for $sr(G^σ)+α(G),\, sr(G^σ)-α(G)$, $sr(G^σ)/α(G)$ and characterize all corresponding extremal graphs.

Gomory-Hu trees of infinite graphs with finite total weight
Gomory and Hu proved that if $ G $ is a finite graph with non-negative weights on its edges, then there exists a tree $ T $ (called now Gomory-Hu tree) on $ V(G) $ such that for all $ u\neq v\in V(G) $ there is an $ e\in E(T) $ such that the two components of $ T-e $ determines an optimal (minimal valued) cut between $ u $ an $ v $ in $ G $. In this paper we extend their result to infinite weighted graphs with finite total weight. Furthermore, we show by an example that one can not omit the condition of finiteness of the total weight.

On the sharp upper and lower bounds of multiplicative Zagreb indices of graphs with connectivity at most k
For a (molecular) graph, the first multiplicative Zagreb index $\prod_1(G) $ is the product of the square of every vertex degree, and the second multiplicative Zagreb index $\prod_2(G) $ is the product of the products of degrees of pairs of adjacent vertices. In this paper, we explore graphs in terms of (edge) connectivity. The maximum and minimum values of $\prod_1(G) $ and $\prod_2(G) $ of graphs with connectivity at most $k$ are provided. In addition, the corresponding extremal graphs are characterized, and our results extend and enrich some known conclusions.
