Optimal control for diffusions on graphs

Starting from a unit mass on a vertex of a graph, we investigate the minimum number of "\emph{controlled diffusion}" steps needed to transport a constant mass $p$ outside of the ball of radius $n$. In a step of a controlled diffusion process we may select any vertex with positive mass and topple its mass equally to its neighbors. Our initial motivation comes from the maximum overhang question in one dimension, but the more general case arises from optimal mass transport problems.
On $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ we show that $Θ( n^{d+2} )$ steps are necessary and sufficient to transport the mass. We also give sharp bounds on the comb graph and $d$-ary trees. Furthermore, we consider graphs where simple random walk has positive speed and entropy and which satisfy Shannon's theorem, and show that the minimum number of controlled diffusion steps is $\exp{( n \cdot h / \ell ( 1 + o(1) ))}$, where $h$ is the Avez asymptotic entropy and $\ell$ is the speed of random walk. As examples, we give precise results on Galton-Watson trees and the product of trees $\mathbb{T}_d \times \mathbb{T}_k$.
A probabilistic approach to the leader problem in random graphs

We study the fixation time of the identity of the leader, i.e., the most massive component, in the general setting of Aldous's multiplicative coalescent [4, 5], which in an asymptotic sense describes the evolution of the component sizes of a wide array of near-critical coalescent processes, including the classical Erdős-Rényi process.
We show tightness of the fixation time in the "Brownian" regime, explicitly determining the median value of the fixation time to within an optimal $O(1)$ window. This generalizes Łuczak's result [31] for the Erdős-Rényi random graph using completely different techniques.
In the heavy-tailed case, in which the limit of the component sizes can be encoded using a thinned pure-jump Lévy process, we prove that only one-sided tightness holds. This shows a genuine difference in the possible behavior in the two regimes.
The solution to the leader problem in the setting of the Erdős-Rényi random graph played an important role in the study of the scaling limit of the minimal spanning tree on the complete graph [2]. We believe that analogous results, such as those proved herein, will be useful in establishing universality of the intrinsic geometry of the minimal spanning tree across a large class of models.
New constructions for the $n$-queens problem
Let $D$ be a digraph, possibly with loops. A queen labeling of $D$ is a bijective function $l:V(G)\longrightarrow \{1,2,\ldots,|V(G)|\}$ such that, for every pair of arcs in $E(D)$, namely $(u,v)$ and $(u',v')$ we have (i) $l(u)+l(v)\neq l(u')+l(v')$ and (ii) $l(v)-l(u)\neq l(v')-l(u')$. Similarly, if the two conditions are satisfied modulo $n=|V(G)|$, we define a modular queen labeling. There is a bijection between (modular) queen labelings of $1$-regular digraphs and the solutions of the (modular) $n$-queens problem.
The $\otimes_h$-product was introduced in 2008 as a generalization of the Kronecker product and since then, many relations among labelings have been established using the $\otimes_h$-product and some particular families of graphs.
In this paper, we study some families of $1$-regular digraphs that admit (modular) queen labelings and present a new construction concerning to the (modular) $n$-queens problem in terms of the $\otimes_h$-product, which in some sense complements a previous result due to Pólya.
Non-trivially intersecting multi-part families

We say a family of sets is intersecting if any two of its sets intersect, and we say it is trivially intersecting if there is an element which appears in every set of the family. In this paper we study the maximum size of a non-trivially intersecting family in a natural "multi-part" setting. Here the ground set is divided into parts, and one considers families of sets whose intersection with each part is of a prescribed size. Our work is motivated by classical results in the single-part setting due to Erdős, Ko and Rado, and Hilton and Milner, and by a theorem of Frankl concerning intersecting families in this multi-part setting. In the case where the part sizes are sufficiently large we determine the maximum size of a non-trivially intersecting multi-part family, disproving a conjecture of Alon and Katona.
Geometric realizations of the accordion complex of a dissection

Consider $2n$ points on the unit circle and a reference dissection $\mathrm{D}_\circ$ of the convex hull of the odd points. The accordion complex of $\mathrm{D}_\circ$ is the simplicial complex of non-crossing subsets of the diagonals with even endpoints that cross a connected subset of diagonals of $\mathrm{D}_\circ$. In particular, this complex is an associahedron when $\mathrm{D}_\circ$ is a triangulation and a Stokes complex when $\mathrm{D}_\circ$ is a quadrangulation. In this paper, we provide geometric realizations (by polytopes and fans) of the accordion complex of any reference dissection $\mathrm{D}_\circ$, generalizing known constructions arising from cluster algebras.
Steiner trees and higher geodecity
Let $G$ be a connected graph and $\ell : E(G) \to \mathbb{R}^+$ a length-function on the edges of $G$. The Steiner distance $\mathrm{sd}_G(A)$ of $A \subseteq V(G)$ within $G$ is the minimum length of a connected subgraph of $G$ containing $A$, where the length of a subgraph is the sum of the lengths of its edges.
It is clear that every subgraph $H \subseteq G$, with the induced length-function $\ell|_{E(H)}$, satisfies $\mathrm{sd}_H(A) \geq \mathrm{sd}_G(A)$ for every $A \subseteq V(H)$. We call $H \subseteq G$ $k$-geodesic in $G$ if equality is attained for every $A \subseteq V(H)$ with $|A| \leq k$. A subgraph is fully geodesic if it is $k$-geodesic for every $k \in \mathbb{N}$. It is easy to construct examples of graphs $H \subseteq G$ such that $H$ is $k$-geodesic, but not $(k+1)$-geodesic, so this defines a strict hierarchy of properties. We are interested in situations in which this hierarchy collapses in the sense that if $H \subseteq G$ is $k$-geodesic, then $H$ is already fully geodesic in $G$.
Our first result of this kind asserts that if $T$ is a tree and $T \subseteq G$ is 2-geodesic with respect to some length-function $\ell$, then it is fully geodesic. This fails for graphs containing a cycle. We also prove that if $C$ is a cycle and $C \subseteq G$ is 6-geodesic, then $C$ is fully geodesic. We present an example showing that the number six is indeed optimal.
We then develop a structural approach towards a more general theory and present several open questions concerning the big picture underlying this phenomenon.
Asymptotic Enumeration of Compacted Binary Trees of Bounded Right Height

A compacted binary tree is a graph created from a binary tree such that repeatedly occurring subtrees in the original tree are represented by pointers to existing ones, and hence every subtree is unique. Such representations form a special class of directed acyclic graphs. We are interested in the asymptotic number of compacted trees of given size, where the size of a compacted tree is given by the number of its internal nodes. Due to its superexponential growth this problem poses many difficulties. Therefore we restrict our investigations to compacted trees of bounded right height, which is the maximal number of edges going to the right on any path from the root to a leaf.
We solve the asymptotic counting problem for this class as well as a closely related, further simplified class.
For this purpose, we develop a calculus on exponential generating functions for compacted trees of bounded right height and for relaxed trees of bounded right height, which differ from compacted trees by dropping the above described uniqueness condition. This enables us to derive a recursively defined sequence of differential equations for the exponential generating functions. The coefficients can then be determined by performing a singularity analysis of the solutions of these differential equations.
Our main results are the computation of the asymptotic numbers of relaxed as well as compacted trees of bounded right height and given size, when the size tends to infinity.
Approximation of biased Boolean functions of small total influence by DNF's

The influence of the $k$'th coordinate on a Boolean function $f:\{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\}$ is the probability that flipping $x_k$ changes the value $f(x)$. The total influence $I(f)$ is the sum of influences of the coordinates. The well-known `Junta Theorem' of Friedgut (1998) asserts that if $I(f) \leq M$, then $f$ can be $ε$-approximated by a function that depends on $O(2^{M/ε})$ coordinates. Friedgut's theorem has a wide variety of applications in mathematics and theoretical computer science.
For a biased function with $E[f]=μ$, the edge isoperimetric inequality on the cube implies that $I(f) \geq 2μ\log(1/μ)$. Kahn and Kalai (2006) asked, in the spirit of the Junta theorem, whether any $f$ such that $I(f)$ is within a constant factor of the minimum, can be $εμ$-approximated by a DNF of a `small' size (i.e., a union of a small number of sub-cubes). We answer the question by proving the following structure theorem: If $I(f) \leq 2μ(\log(1/μ)+M)$, then $f$ can be $εμ$-approximated by a DNF of size $2^{2^{O(M/ε)}}$. The dependence on $M$ is sharp up to the constant factor in the double exponent.
A stability result for the cube edge isoperimetric inequality

We prove the following stability version of the edge isoperimetric inequality for the cube: any subset of the cube with average boundary degree within $K$ of the minimum possible is $\varepsilon $-close to a union of $L$ disjoint cubes, where $L \leq L(K,\varepsilon )$ is independent of the dimension. This extends a stability result of Ellis, and can viewed as a dimension-free version of Friedgut's junta theorem.

In this study we determine the structure of reversible DNA codes obtained from skew cyclic codes. We show that the generators of such DNA codes enjoy some special properties. We study the structural properties of such family of codes and we also illustrate our results with examples.
Reversible DNA codes over F_{16}+uF_{16}+vF_{16}+uvF_{16}
In this paper we study the structure of specific linear codes called DNA codes. The first attempts on studying such codes have been proposed over four element rings which are naturally matched with DNA four letters. Later, double (pair) DNA strings or in general $k$-DNA strings called $k$-mers have been matched with some special rings and codes over such rings with specific properties are studied. However, these matchings in general are not straightforward and because of the fact that the reverse of the codewords ($k$-mers) need to exist in the code, the matching problem is difficult and it is referred to as the reversibility problem. Here, 8-mers (DNA 8-bases) are matched with the ring elements of $R_{16}=F_{16}+uF_{16}+vF_{16}+uvF_{16}.$ Furthermore, cyclic codes over the ring $R_{16}$ where the multiplication is taken to be noncommutative with respect to the automorphism $θ$ are studied. The preference on the skewness is shown to be very useful and practical especially since this serves as a direct solution to the reversibility problem.
Extensions of a theorem of Erdős on nonhamiltonian graphs
Let $n, d$ be integers with $1 \leq d \leq \left \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2} \right \rfloor$, and set $h(n,d):={n-d \choose 2} + d^2$. Erdős proved that when $n \geq 6d$, each nonhamiltonian graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree $δ(G) \geq d$ has at most $h(n,d)$ edges. He also provides a sharpness example $H_{n,d}$ for all such pairs $n,d$. Previously, we showed a stability version of this result: for $n$ large enough, every nonhamiltonian graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $δ(G) \geq d$ and more than $h(n,d+1)$ edges is a subgraph of $H_{n,d}$.
In this paper, we show that not only does the graph $H_{n,d}$ maximize the number of edges among nonhamiltonian graphs with $n$ vertices and minimum degree at least $d$, but in fact it maximizes the number of copies of any fixed graph $F$ when $n$ is sufficiently large in comparison with $d$ and $|F|$. We also show a stronger stability theorem, that is, we classify all nonhamiltonian $n$-graphs with $δ(G) \geq d$ and more than $h(n,d+2)$ edges. We show this by proving a more general theorem: we describe all such graphs with more than ${n-(d+2) \choose k} + (d+2){d+2 \choose k-1}$ copies of $K_k$ for any $k$.

In 2015, Jing and Li defined type B quasisymmetric Schur functions and conjectured that these functions have a positive, integral and unitriangular expansion into peak functions. We prove this conjecture, and refine their combinatorial model to give explicit expansions in monomial, fundamental and peak bases. We also show that these functions are not quasisymmetric Schur, Young quasisymmetric Schur or dual immaculate positive, and do not have a positive multiplication rule.
More on the $k$-color connection number of a graph
An edge-colored graph $G$ is $k$-color connected if, between each pair of vertices, there exists a path using at least $k$ different colors. The $k$-color connection number of $G$, denoted by $cc_{k}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed to color the edges of $G$ so that $G$ is $k$-color connected. First, we prove that let $H$ be a subdivision of a connected graph $G$, then $cc_{k}(H)\leq cc_{k}(G)$. Second, we give sufficient conditions to guarantee that $cc_{k}(G)=k$ in terms of minimum degree and the number of edges for 2-connected graphs. As a byproduct, we show that almost all graphs have the $k$-color connection number $k$. At last, we investigate the relationship between the $k$-color connection number and the rainbow connection number for a connected graph. In addition, we give exact values of $k$-color connection numbers for some graph classes: subdivisions of the wheel and the complete graph, and the generalised $θ$-graph.

The fundamental group of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement in a complex vector space is an important topological invariant. The third rank of successive quotients in the lower central series of the fundamental group was called Falk invariant of the arrangement since Falk gave the first formula and asked to give a combinatorial interpretation. In this article, we give a combinatorial formula for the Falk invariant of a signed graphic arrangement that do not have a $B_2$ as sub-arrangement.
A Note on Matchings Constructed during Edmonds' Weighted Perfect Matching Algorithm
We reprove that all the matchings constructed during Edmonds' weighted perfect matching algorithm are optimal among those of the same cardinality (provided that certain mild restrictions are obeyed on the choices the algorithm makes). We conclude that in order to solve a weighted matching problem it is not needed to solve a weighted perfect matching problem in an auxiliary graph of doubled size. This result was known before, e.g., posed as an exercise in see Lawler's book from 1976, but is not present in several modern books on combinatorial optimization.

This is a sequel to the paper arXiv:1312.6438 by the same authors. In this sequel, we quantitatively improve several of the main results of arXiv:1312.6438, and build on the methods therein.
The main new results is that, for any finite set $A \subset \mathbb R$, there exists $a \in A$ such that $|A(A+a)| \gtrsim |A|^{\frac{3}{2}+\frac{1}{186}}$. We give improved bounds for the cardinalities of $A(A+A)$ and $A(A-A)$. Also, we prove that $|\{(a_1+a_2+a_3+a_4)^2+\log a_5 : a_i \in A \}| \gg \frac{|A|^2}{\log |A|}$. The latter result is optimal up to the logarithmic factor.

This paper shows the polytopality of any finite type $\mathbf{g}$-vector fan, acyclic or not. In fact, for any finite Dynkin type $Γ$, we construct a universal associahedron $\mathsf{Asso}_{\mathrm{un}}(Γ)$ with the property that any $\mathbf{g}$-vector fan of type $Γ$ is the normal fan of a suitable projection of $\mathsf{Asso}_{\mathrm{un}}(Γ)$.
Patterns in Random Fractals

We characterize the existence of certain geometric configurations in the fractal percolation limit set $A$ in terms of the almost sure dimension of $A$. Some examples of the configurations we study are: homothetic copies of finite sets, angles, distances, and volumes of simplices. In the spirit of relative Szemerédi theorems for random discrete sets, we also consider the corresponding problem for sets of positive $ν$-measure, where $ν$ is the natural measure on $A$. In both cases we identify the dimension threshold for each class of configurations. These results are obtained by investigating the intersections of the products of $m$ independent realizations of $A$ with transversal planes and, more generally, algebraic varieties, and extend some well known features of independent percolation on trees to a setting with long-range dependencies.
