Stars versus stripes Ramsey numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
For given simple graphs $G_1, G_2, \ldots , G_t$, the Ramsey number $R(G_1, G_2, \ldots, G_t)$ is the smallest positive integer $n$ such that if the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ are partitioned into $t$ disjoint color classes giving $t$ graphs $H_1,H_2,\ldots,H_t$, then at least one $H_i$ has a subgraph isomorphic to $G_i$. In this paper, for positive integers $t_1,t_2,\ldots, t_s$ and $n_1,n_2,\ldots, n_c$ the Ramsey number $R(S_{t_1}, S_{t_2},\ldots ,S_{t_s}, n_1K_2,n_2K_2,\ldots,n_cK_2)$ is computed, where $nK_2$ denotes a matching (stripe) of size $n$, i.e., $n$ pairwise disjoint edges and $S_{n}$ is a star with $n$ edges. This result generalizes and strengthens significantly a well-known result of Cockayne and Lorimer and also a known result of Gyárfás and Sárközy.

Nonrepetitive edge-colorings of trees
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 1, Graph Theory (June 27, 2017) dmtcs:2651 • View Publication • BIB
A repetition is a sequence of symbols in which the first half is the same as the second half. An edge-coloring of a graph is repetition-free or nonrepetitive if there is no path with a color pattern that is a repetition. The minimum number of colors so that a graph has a nonrepetitive edge-coloring is called its Thue edge-chromatic number. We improve on the best known general upper bound of $4Δ-4$ for the Thue edge-chromatic number of trees of maximum degree $Δ$ due to Alon, Grytczuk, Hałuszczak and Riordan (2002) by providing a simple nonrepetitive edge-coloring with $3Δ-2$ colors.

Fixed points in compactifications and combinatorial counterparts
The Kechris-Pestov-Todorcevic correspondence connects extreme amenability of non-Archimedean Polish groups with Ramsey properties of classes of finite structures. The purpose of the present paper is to recast it as one of the instances of a more general construction, allowing to show that Ramsey-type statements actually appear as natural combinatorial expressions of the existence of fixed points in certain compactifications of groups, and that similar correspondences in fact exist in various dynamical contexts.

Rainbow vertex connection of digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An edge-coloured path is \emph{rainbow} if its edges have distinct colours. An edge-coloured connected graph is said to be \emph{rainbow connected} if any two vertices are connected by a rainbow path, and \emph{strongly rainbow connected} if any two vertices are connected by a rainbow geodesic. The (\emph{strong}) \emph{rainbow connection number} of a connected graph is the minimum number of colours needed to make the graph (strongly) rainbow connected. These two graph parameters were introduced by Chartrand, Johns, McKeon and Zhang in 2008. As an extension, Krivelevich and Yuster proposed the concept of \emph{rainbow vertex-connection}. The topic of rainbow connection in graphs drew much attention and various similar parameters were introduced, mostly dealing with undirected graphs. Dorbec, Schiermeyer, Sidorowicz and Sopena extended the concept of the rainbow connection to digraphs. In this paper, we consider the (strong) rainbow vertex-connection number of digraphs. Results on the (strong) rainbow vertex-connection number of biorientations of graphs, cycle digraphs, circulant digraphs and tournaments are presented.

Total rainbow connection of digraphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 2017 • View Publication • BIB
An edge-coloured path is rainbow if its edges have distinct colours. For a connected graph $G$, the rainbow connection number (resp. strong rainbow connection number) of $G$ is the minimum number of colours required to colour the edges of $G$ so that, any two vertices of $G$ are connected by a rainbow path (resp. rainbow geodesic). These two graph parameters were introduced by Chartrand, Johns, McKeon and Zhang in 2008. Krivelevich and Yuster generalised this concept to the vertex-coloured setting. Similarly, Liu, Mestre and Sousa introduced the version which involves total-colourings. Dorbec, Schiermeyer, Sidorowicz and Sopena extended the concept of the rainbow connection to digraphs. In this paper, we consider the (strong) total rainbow connection number of digraphs. Results on the (strong) total rainbow connection number of biorientations of graphs, tournaments and cactus digraphs are presented.

Proof of an entropy conjecture of Leighton and Moitra
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove the following conjecture of Leighton and Moitra. Let $T$ be a tournament on $[n]$ and $S_n$ the set of permutations of $[n]$. For an arc $uv$ of $T$, let $A_{uv}=\{σ\in S_n \, : \, σ(u)<σ(v) \}$. $\textbf{Theorem.}$ For a fixed $\varepsilon>0$, if $\mathbb{P}$ is a probability distribution on $S_n$ such that $\mathbb{P}(A_{uv})>1/2+\varepsilon$ for every arc $uv$ of $T$, then the binary entropy of $\mathbb{P}$ is at most $(1-\vartheta_{\varepsilon})\log_2 n!$ for some (fixed) positive $\vartheta_\varepsilon$. When $T$ is transitive the theorem is due to Leighton and Moitra; for this case we give a short proof with a better $\vartheta_\varepsilon$.

The phases of large networks with edge and triangle constraints
Published • View Publication • BIB
Based on numerical simulation and local stability analysis we describe the structure of the phase space of the edge/triangle model of random graphs. We support simulation evidence with mathematical proof of continuity and discontinuity for many of the phase transitions. All but one of themany phase transitions in this model break some form of symmetry, and we use this model to explore how changes in symmetry are related to discontinuities at these transitions.

Signed edge domination numbers of complete tripartite graphs: Part 2
The closed neighborhood $N_G[e]$ of an edge $e$ in a graph $G$ is the set consisting of $e$ and of all edges having an end-vertex in common with $e$. Let $f$ be a function on $E(G)$, the edge set of $G$, into the set $\{-1,1\}$. If $\sum_{x\in{N[e]}}f(x)\geq 1$ for each edge $e \in E(G)$, then $f$ is called a signed edge dominating function of $G$. The signed edge domination number of $G$ is the minimum weight of a signed edge dominating function of $G$. In this paper, we find the signed edge domination number of the complete tripartite graph $K_{m,n,p}$, where $1\leq m\leq n$ and $p\geq m+n$. This completes the search for the signed edge domination numbers of the complete tripartite graphs.

Fixed points of morphisms among binary generalized pseudostandard words
We introduce a class of fixed points of primitive morphisms among aperiodic binary generalized pseudostandard words. We conjecture that this class contains all fixed points of primitive morphisms among aperiodic binary generalized pseudostandard words that are not standard Sturmian words.

Discrete-Time Quantum Walks and Graph Structures
Published • View Publication • BIB
We formulate three current models of discrete-time quantum walks in a combinatorial way. These walks are shown to be closely related to rotation systems and 1-factorizations of graphs. For two of the models, we compute the traces and total entropies of the average mixing matrices for some cubic graphs. The trace captures how likely a quantum walk is to revisit the state it started with, and the total entropy measures how close the limiting distribution is to uniform. Our numerical results indicate three relations between quantum walks and graph structures: for the first model, rotation systems with higher genera give lower traces and higher entropies, and for the second model, the symmetric 1-factorizations always give the highest trace.

The Partition Rank of a Tensor and $k$-Right Corners in $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{n}$
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A 174, 105190, 25 pp, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
Following the breakthrough of Croot, Lev, and Pach, Tao introduced a symmetrized version of their argument, which is now known as the slice rank method. In this paper, we introduce a more general version of the slice rank of a tensor, which we call the Partition Rank. This allows us to extend the slice rank method to problems that require the variables to be distinct. Using the partition rank, we generalize a recent result of Ge and Shangguan, and prove that any set $A\subset\mathbb{F}_{q}^{n}$ of size \[|A|>\binom{n+(k-1)q}{(k-1)(q-1)}\] contains a $k$-right-corner, that is distinct vectors $x_{1},\dots,x_{k},x_{k+1}$ where $x_{1}-x_{k+1},\dots,x_{k}-x_{k+1}$ are mutually orthogonal, for $q=p^{r}$, a prime power with $p>k$.
Combinatorial classification of quantum lens spaces
Published in Pacific J. Math. 297 (2018) 339-365 • View Publication • BIB
We answer the question of how large the dimension of a quantum lens space must be, compared to the primary parameter $r$, for the isomorphism class to depend on the secondary parameters. Since classification results in C*-algebra theory reduces this question to one concerning a certain kind of $SL$-equivalence of integer matrices of a special form, our approach is entirely combinatorial and based on the counting of certain paths in the graphs shown by Hong and Szymański to describe the quantum lens spaces.

A modular supercongruence for $_6F_5$: an Apéry-like story
Published in Annales de l'Institut Fourier 68:5 (2018) 1987--2004 • View Publication • BIB
We prove a supercongruence modulo $p^3$ between the $p$th Fourier coefficient of a weight 6 modular form and a truncated ${}_6F_5$-hypergeometric series. Novel ingredients in the proof are the comparison of two rational approximations to $ζ(3)$ to produce non-trivial harmonic sum identities and the reduction of the resulting congruences between harmonic sums via a congruence between the Apéry numbers and another Apéry-like sequence.

Star chromatic index of subcubic multigraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The star chromatic index of a multigraph $G$, denoted $χ'_{s}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed to properly color the edges of $G$ such that no path or cycle of length four is bi-colored. A multigraph $G$ is star $k$-edge-colorable if $χ'_{s}(G)\le k$. Dvořák, Mohar and Šámal [Star chromatic index, J. Graph Theory 72 (2013), 313--326] proved that every subcubic multigraph is star $7$-edge-colorable. They conjectured in the same paper that every subcubic multigraph should be star $6$-edge-colorable. In this paper, we first prove that it is NP-complete to determine whether $χ'_s(G)\le3$ for an arbitrary graph $G$. This answers a question of Mohar. We then establish some structure results on subcubic multigraphs $G$ with $δ(G)\le2$ such that $χ'_s(G)>k$ but $χ'_s(G-v)\le k$ for any $v\in V(G)$, where $k\in\{5,6\}$. We finally apply the structure results, along with a simple discharging method, to prove that every subcubic multigraph $G$ is star $6$-edge-colorable if $mad(G)<5/2$, and star $5$-edge-colorable if $mad(G)<24/11$, respectively, where $mad(G)$ is the maximum average degree of a multigraph $G$. This partially confirms the conjecture of Dvořák, Mohar and Šámal.

Families of sets with no matchings of sizes 3 and 4
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study the following classical question of extremal set theory: what is the maximum size of a family of subsets of $[n]$ such that no $s$ sets from the family are pairwise disjoint? This problem was first posed by Erd\H os and resolved for $n\equiv 0, -1\ (\mathrm{mod }\ s)$ by Kleitman in the 60s. Very little progress was made on the problem until recently. The only result was a very lengthy resolution of the case $s=3,\ n\equiv 1\ (\mathrm{mod }\ 3)$ by Quinn, which was written in his PhD thesis and never published in a refereed journal. In this paper, we give another, much shorter proof of Quinn's result, as well as resolve the case $s=4,\ n\equiv 2\ (\mathrm{mod }\ 4)$. This complements the results in our recent paper, where, in particular, we answered the question in the case $n\equiv -2\ (\mathrm{mod }\ s)$ for $s\ge 5$.

Counting intersecting and pairs of cross-intersecting families
Published • View Publication • BIB
A family of subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ is called {\it intersecting} if any two of its sets intersect. A classical result in extremal combinatorics due to Erdős, Ko, and Rado determines the maximum size of an intersecting family of $k$-subsets of $\{1,\ldots, n\}$. In this paper we study the following problem: how many intersecting families of $k$-subsets of $\{1,\ldots, n\}$ are there? Improving a result of Balogh, Das, Delcourt, Liu, and Sharifzadeh, we determine this quantity asymptotically for $n\ge 2k+2+2\sqrt{k\log k}$ and $k\to \infty$. Moreover, under the same assumptions we also determine asymptotically the number of {\it non-trivial} intersecting families, that is, intersecting families for which the intersection of all sets is empty. We obtain analogous results for pairs of cross-intersecting families.
The flip Markov chain for connected regular graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Mahlmann and Schindelhauer (2005) defined a Markov chain which they called $k$-Flipper, and showed that it is irreducible on the set of all connected regular graphs of a given degree (at least 3). We study the 1-Flipper chain, which we call the flip chain, and prove that the flip chain converges rapidly to the uniform distribution over connected $2r$-regular graphs with $n$ vertices, where $n\geq 8$ and $r = r(n)\geq 2$. Formally, we prove that the distribution of the flip chain will be within $\varepsilon$ of uniform in total variation distance after $\text{poly}(n,r,\log(\varepsilon^{-1}))$ steps. This polynomial upper bound on the mixing time is given explicitly, and improves markedly on a previous bound given by Feder et al.(2006). We achieve this improvement by using a direct two-stage canonical path construction, which we define in a general setting. This work has applications to decentralised networks based on random regular connected graphs of even degree, as a self-stabilising protocol in which nodes spontaneously perform random flips in order to repair the network.

Social Balance and the Bernoulli Equation
Published • View Publication • BIB
Since the 1940's there has been an interest in the question why social networks often give rise to two antagonistic factions. Recently a dynamical model of how and why such a balance might occur was developed. This note provides an introduction to the notion of social balance and a new (and simplified) analysis of that model. This new analysis allows us to choose general initial conditions, as opposed to the symmetric ones previously considered. We show that for general initial conditions, four factions will evolve instead of two. We characterize the four factions, and we give an idea of their relative sizes.

Multipermutation Ulam Sphere Analysis Toward Characterizing Maximal Code Size
Published • View Publication • BIB
Permutation codes, in the form of rank modulation, have shown promise for applications such as flash memory. One of the metrics recently suggested as appropriate for rank modulation is the Ulam metric, which measures the minimum translocation distance between permutations. Multipermutation codes have also been proposed as a generalization of permutation codes that would improve code size (and consequently the code rate). In this paper we analyze the Ulam metric in the context of multipermutations, noting some similarities and differences between the Ulam metric in the context of permutations. We also consider sphere sizes for multipermutations under the Ulam metric and resulting bounds on code size.
