On Primes, Graphs and Cohomology
The counting function on the natural numbers defines a discrete Morse-Smale complex with a cohomology for which topological quantities like Morse indices, Betti numbers or counting functions for critical points of Morse index are explicitly given in number theoretical terms. The Euler characteristic of the Morse filtration is related to the Mertens function, the Poincaré-Hopf indices at critical points correspond to the values of the Moebius function. The Morse inequalities link number theoretical quantities like the prime counting functions relevant for the distribution of primes with cohomological properties of the graphs. The just given picture is a special case of a discrete Morse cohomology equivalent to simplicial cohomology. The special example considered here is a case where the graph is the Barycentric refinement of a finite simple graph.

Let $n\geq2$ be an integer. In this paper, we study the convexity of the so-called MacMahon's $q$-Catalan polynomials $C_n(q)=\frac1{[n+1]_q}\left[ 2n \atop n \right]_q$ as functions of $q$. Along the way, several intermediate results on inequalities are presented including a commentary on the convexity of the generation function for the integer partitions.
On the queue-number of graphs with bounded tree-width

A queue layout of a graph consists of a linear order on the vertices and an assignment of the edges to queues, such that no two edges in a single queue are nested. The minimum number of queues needed in a queue layout of a graph is called its queue-number.
We show that for each $k\geq1$, graphs with tree-width at most $k$ have queue-number at most $2^k-1$. This improves upon double exponential upper bounds due to Dujmović et al. and Giacomo et al. As a consequence we obtain that these graphs have track-number at most $2^{O(k^2)}$.
We complement these results by a construction of $k$-trees that have queue-number at least $k+1$. Already in the case $k=2$ this is an improvement to existing results and solves a problem of Rengarajan and Veni Madhavan, namely, that the maximal queue-number of $2$-trees is equal to $3$.

After Bob sends Alice a bit, she responds with a lengthy reply. At the cost of a factor of two in the total communication, Alice could just as well have given the two possible replies without listening and have Bob select which applies to him. Motivated by a conjecture stating that this form of "round elimination" is impossible in exact quantum communication complexity, we study the orthogonal rank and a symmetric variant thereof for a certain family of Cayley graphs. The orthogonal rank of a graph is the smallest number $d$ for which one can label each vertex with a nonzero $d$-dimensional complex vector such that adjacent vertices receive orthogonal vectors.
We show an exp$(n)$ lower bound on the orthogonal rank of the graph on $\{0,1\}^n$ in which two strings are adjacent if they have Hamming distance at least $n/2$. In combination with previous work, this implies an affirmative answer to the above conjecture.
A hierarchy of maximal intersecting triple systems

We reach beyond the celebrated theorems of Erdős-Ko-Rado and Hilton-Milner, and, a recent theorem of Han-Kohayakawa, and determine all maximal intersecting triples systems. It turns out that for each $n\ge7$ there are exactly 15 pairwise non-isomorphic such systems (and 13 for $n=6$). We present our result in terms of a hierarchy of Turán numbers $\ex^{(s)}(n, M_2^{3})$, $s\ge1$, where $M_2^{3}$ is a pair of disjoint triples. Moreover, owing to our unified approach, we provide short proofs of the above mentioned results (for triple systems only). The triangle $C_3$ is defined as $C_3=\{\{x_1,y_3,x_2\},\{x_1,y_2,x_3\}, \{x_2,y_1,x_3\}\}$. Along the way we show that the largest intersecting triple system $H$ on $n\ge6$ vertices, which is not a star and is triangle-free, consists of $\max\{10,n\}$ triples. This facilitates our main proof's philosophy which is to assume that $H$ contains a copy of the triangle and analyze how the remaining edges of $H$ intersect that copy.
The circular altitude of a graph
In this paper we investigate a parameter of graphs, called the circular altitude, introduced by Peter Cameron. We show that the circular altitude provides a lower bound on the circular chromatic number, and hence on the chromatic number, of a graph and investigate this parameter for the iterated Mycielskian of certain graphs.
Squares of Low Maximum Degree

A graph H is a square root of a graph G if G can be obtained from H by adding an edge between any two vertices in H that are of distance 2. The Square Root problem is that of deciding whether a given graph admits a square root. This problem is only known to be NP-complete for chordal graphs and polynomial-time solvable for non-trivial minor-closed graph classes and a very limited number of other graph classes. We prove that Square Root is O(n)-time solvable for graphs of maximum degree 5 and O(n^4)-time solvable for graphs of maximum degree at most 6.

Let $n \ge 5$ and $k\ge 4$ be positive integers. We determine the maximum size of digraphs of order n that avoid distinct walks of length k with the same endpoints. We also characterize the extremal digraphs attaining this maximum number when $k \ge 5$.

We obtain some recurrence relationships among the partition vectors of the partial exponential Bell polynomials. On using such results, the $n$-th Adomian polynomial for any nonlinear operator can be expressed explicitly in terms of the partial exponential Bell polynomials. Some new identities for the partial exponential Bell polynomials are obtained by solving certain ordinary differential equations using Adomian decomposition method.
From expanded digraphs to lifts of voltage digraphs and line digraphs
In this note we present a general approach to construct large digraphs from small ones. These are called expanded digraphs, and, as particular cases, we show the close relationship between lifted digraphs of voltage digraphs and line digraphs, which are two known ways to obtain dense digraphs. In the same context, we show the equivalence between the vertex-splitting and partial line digraph techniques. Then, we give a sufficient condition for a lifted digraph of a base line digraph to be again a line digraph. Some of the results are illustrated with two well-known families of digraphs. Namely, the De Bruijn and Kautz digraphs, where it is shown that both families can be seen as lifts of smaller De Bruijn digraphs with appropriate voltage assignments.
Mechanisms for Network Growth that Preserve Spectral and Local Structure
We introduce a method that can be used to evolve the topology of a network in a way that preserves both the network's spectral as well as local structure. This method is quite versatile in the sense that it can be used to evolve a network's topology over any collection of the network's elements. This evolution preserves both the eigenvector centrality of these elements as well as the eigenvalues of the original network. Although this method is introduced as a tool to model network growth, we show it can also be used to compare the topology of different networks where two networks are considered similar if their evolved topologies are the same. Because this method preserves the spectral structure of a network, which is related to the network's dynamics, it can also be used to study the interplay of network growth and function. We show that if a network's dynamics is intrinsically stable, which is a stronger version of the standard notion of stability, then the network remains intrinsically stable as the network's topology evolves. This is of interest since the growth of a network can have a destabilizing effect on the network's dynamics, in general. In this sense the methods developed here can be used as a tool for designing mechanisms of network growth that ensure a network remains stabile as it grows.
Homological combinatorics and extensions of the cd-index
Many combinatorial proofs rely on induction. When these proofs are formulated in traditional language, they can be bulky and unmanageable. Coalgebras provide a language which can reduce reduce many inductive proofs in graded poset theory to comprehensible size. As a bonus, the visual form of the resulting recursive proofs suggests combinatorial interpretations for constants appearing in the longer arguments. We use the techniques of coalgebras to compute invariants of toric and affine arrangements as well as of poset products. In additional chapters we prove structure theorems for acyclic orientations and critical groups of graphs.

We consider the distributions of the lengths of the longest monotone and alternating subsequences in classes of permutations of size $n$ that avoid a specific pattern or set of patterns, with respect to the uniform distribution on each such class. We obtain exact results for any class that avoids two patterns of length 3, as well as results for some classes that avoid one pattern of length 4 or more. In our results, the longest monotone subsequences have expected length proportional to $n$ for pattern-avoiding classes, in contrast with the $\sqrt n$ behaviour that holds for unrestricted permutations.
In addition, for a pattern $τ$ of length $k$, we scale the plot of a random $τ$-avoiding permutation down to the unit square and study the "rare region," which is the part of the square that is exponentially unlikely to contain any points. We prove that when $τ_1>τ_k$, the complement of the rare region is a closed set that contains the main diagonal of the unit square. For the case $τ_1=k,$ we also show that the lower boundary of the part of the rare region above the main diagonal is a curve that is Lipschitz continuous and strictly increasing on $[0,1]$.

Let $Φ$ be an irreducible (possibly noncrystallographic) root system of rank $l$ of type $P$. For the corresponding cluster complex $Δ(P)$, which is known as pure $(l-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex, we define the generating function of the number of faces of $Δ(P)$ with dimension $i-1$, which is called the {\it $f$-polynomial}. We show that the $f$-polynomial has exactly $l$ simple real zeros on the interval $(0, 1)$ and the smallest root for the infinite series of type $A_l$, $B_l$ and $D_l$ monotone decreasingly converges to zero as the rank $l$ tends to infinity. We also consider the generating function (called the {\it $f^{+}$-polynomial}) of the number of faces of the positive part $Δ_{+}(P)$ of the complex $Δ(P)$ with dimension $i-1$, whose zeros are real and simple and are located in the interval $(0, 1]$, including a simple root at $t=1$. We show that the roots $\{ t^{+}_{P, ν+1} \}_{ν=1}^{l-1}$ in decreasing order of $f^{+}$-polynomial alternate with the roots $\{ t_{P, ν} \}_{ν=1}^{l}$ in decreasing order of $f$-polynomial.
Geodesic and curvature of piecewise flat Finsler surfaces

A piecewise flat Finsler metric on a triangulated surface $M$ is a metric whose restriction to any triangle is a flat triangle in some Minkowski space with straight edges. One of the main purposes of this work is to study the properties of geodesics on a piecewise flat Finsler surface, especially when it meets a vertex. Using the edge-crossing equation, we define two classes of piecewise flat Finsler surfaces, namely, Landsberg type and Berwald type. We deduce an explicit condition for a geodesic to be extendable at a vertex, and define the curvature which measures the \textit{amount} of such extensions. The dependence of the curvature on an incoming or outgoing tangent direction corresponds to the feature of flag curvature in Finsler geometry. When the piecewise flat Finsler surface is of Landsberg type, the curvature is only relevant to the vertex, and we prove a combinatoric Gauss-Bonnet formula which generalizes both the Gauss-Bonnet formulas for piecewise flat Riemannian manifolds and for smooth Landsberg surfaces.

In estimating the complexity of objects, in particular of graphs, it is common practice to rely on graph- and information-theoretic measures. Here, using integer sequences with properties such as Borel normality, we explain how these measures are not independent of the way in which an object, such as a graph, can be described or observed. From observations that can reconstruct the same graph and are therefore essentially translations of the same description, we will see that when applying a computable measure such as Shannon Entropy, not only is it necessary to pre-select a feature of interest where there is one, and to make an arbitrary selection where there is not, but also that more general properties, such as the causal likelihood of a graph as a measure (opposed to randomness), can be largely misrepresented by computable measures such as Entropy and Entropy rate. We introduce recursive and non-recursive (uncomputable) graphs and graph constructions based on these integer sequences, whose different lossless descriptions have disparate Entropy values, thereby enabling the study and exploration of a measure's range of applications and demonstrating the weaknesses of computable measures of complexity.

In this paper we introduce a natural mathematical structure derived from Samuel Beckett's play "Quad". We call this structure a binary Beckett-Gray code. We enumerate all codes for $n \leq 6$ and give examples for $n=7,8$. Beckett-Gray codes can be realized as successive states of a queue data structure. We show that the binary reflected Gray code can be realized as successive states of two stack data structures.

Classical Gončarov polynomials are polynomials which interpolate derivatives. Delta Gončarov polynomials are polynomials which interpolate delta operators, e.g., forward and backward difference operators. We extend fundamental aspects of the theory of classical bivariate Gončarov polynomials and univariate delta Gončarov polynomials to the multivariate setting using umbral calculus. After introducing systems of delta operators, we define multivariate delta Gončarov polynomials, show that the associated interpolation problem is always solvable, and derive a generating function (an Appell relation) for them. We show that systems of delta Gončarov polynomials on an interpolation grid $Z \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ are of binomial type if and only if $Z = A\mathbb{N}^d$ for some $d\times d$ matrix $A$. This motivates our definition of delta Abel polynomials to be exactly those delta Gončarov polynomials which are based on such a grid. Finally, compact formulas for delta Abel polynomials in all dimensions are given for separable systems of delta operators. This recovers a former result for classical bivariate Abel polynomials and extends previous partial results for classical trivariate Abel polynomials to all dimensions.
