Short Zero-Sum Sequences Over Abelian $p$-Groups of Large Exponent
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group with exponent $n$. Let $η(G)$ denote the smallest integer $\ell$ such that every sequence over $G$ of length at least $\ell$ has a zero-sum subsequence of length at most $n$. We determine the precise value of $η(G)$ when $G$ is a $p$-group whose Davenport constant is at most $2n-1$. This confirms one of the equalities in a conjecture by Schmid and Zhuang from 2010.

Semi-steady non-commutative crepant resolutions via regular dimer models
Published • View Publication • BIB
A consistent dimer model gives a non-commutative crepant resolution (= NCCR) of a $3$-dimensional Gorenstein toric singularity. In particular, it is known that a consistent dimer model gives a nice class of NCCRs called steady if and only if it is homotopy equivalent to a regular hexagonal dimer model. Inspired by this result, we introduce the notion of semi-steady NCCRs, and show a consistent dimer model gives a semi-steady NCCR if and only if it is homotopy equivalent to a regular dimer model.

The probability of nonexistence of a subgraph in a moderately sparse random graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We develop a general procedure that finds recursions for statistics counting isomorphic copies of a graph $G_0$ in the common random graph models ${\cal G}(n,m)$ and ${\cal G}(n,p)$. Our results apply when the average degrees of the random graphs are below the threshold at which each edge is included in a copy of $G_0$. This extends an argument given earlier by the second author for $G_0=K_3$ with a more restricted range of average degree. For all strictly balanced subgraphs $G_0$, our results gives much information on the distribution of the number of copies of $G_0$ that are not in large "clusters" of copies. The probability that a random graph in ${\cal G}(n,p)$ has no copies of $G_0$ is shown to be given asymptotically by the exponential of a power series in $n$ and $p$, over a fairly wide range of $p$. A corresponding result is also given for ${\cal G}(n,m)$, which gives an asymptotic formula for the number of graphs with $n$ vertices, $m$ edges and no copies of $G_0$, for the applicable range of $m$. An example is given, computing the asymptotic probability that a random graph has no triangles for $p=o(n^{-7/11})$ in ${\cal G}(n,p)$ and for $m=o(n^{15/11})$ in ${\cal G}(n,m)$, extending results of the second author.

Triangle-different Hamiltonian paths
Let $G$ be a fixed graph. Two paths of length $n-1$ on $n$ vertices (Hamiltonian paths) are $G$-different if there is a subgraph isomorphic to $G$ in their union. In this paper we prove that the maximal number of pairwise triangle-different Hamiltonian paths is equal to the number of balanced bipartitions of the ground set, answering a question of Körner, Messuti and Simonyi.

Note on Ramsey theorem for posets with linear extensions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this note we consider a Ramsey type result for partially ordered sets. In particular, we give an alternative short proof of a theorem for a posets with multiple linear extensions recently obtained by Solecki and Zhao.

Bounded Diameter Arboricity
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the notion of \emph{bounded diameter arboricity}. Specifically, the \emph{diameter-$d$ arboricity} of a graph is the minimum number $k$ such that the edges of the graph can be partitioned into $k$ forests each of whose components has diameter at most $d$. A class of graphs has bounded diameter arboricity $k$ if there exists a natural number $d$ such that every graph in the class has diameter-$d$ arboricity at most $k$. We conjecture that the class of graphs with arboricity at most $k$ has bounded diameter arboricity at most $k+1$. We prove this conjecture for $k\in \{2,3\}$ by proving the stronger assertion that the union of a forest and a star forest can be partitioned into two forests of diameter at most 18. We use these results to characterize the bounded diameter arboricity for planar graphs of girth at least $g$ for all $g\ne 5$. As an application we show that every 6-edge-connected planar (multi)graph contains two edge-disjoint $\frac{18}{19}$-thin spanning trees.

Slicing and dicing polytopes
Using tropical convexity Dochtermann, Fink, and Sanyal proved that regular fine mixed subdivisions of Minkowski sums of simplices support minimal cellular resolutions. They asked if the regularity condition can be removed. We give an affirmative answer by a different method. A new easily checked sufficient condition for a subdivided polytope to support a cellular resolution is proved. The main tool used is discrete Morse theory.

Asymptotic approximation of central binomial coefficients with rigorous error bounds
Published in Open J. Math. Sci. 5 (2021), 380-386 • View Publication • BIB
We show that a well-known asymptotic series for the logarithm of the central binomial coefficient is strictly enveloping in the sense of Pólya and Szegö, so the error incurred in truncating the series is of the same sign as the next term, and is bounded in magnitude by that term. We consider closely related asymptotic series for Binet's function, for $\lnΓ(z+1/2)$, and for the Riemann-Siegel theta function, and make some historical remarks.

Almost perfect matchings in $k$-partite $k$-graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The minimum co-degree threshold for a perfect matching in a $k$-graph with $n$ vertices was determined by Rödl, Ruciński and Szemerédi for the case when $n\equiv 0\pmod k$. Recently, Han resolved the remaining cases when $n \not\equiv 0\pmod k$, establishing a conjecture of Rödl, Ruciński and Szemerédi. In this paper, we determine the minimum co-degree threshold for almost perfect matchings in $k$-partite $k$-graphs, answering a question of Rödl and Ruciński.

On Doubling and Volume: Chains
Published • View Publication • BIB
The well--known Freiman--Ruzsa Theorem provides a structural description of a set $A$ of integers with $|2A|\le c|A|$ as a subset of a $d$--dimensional arithmetic progression $P$ with $|P|\le c'|A|$, where $d$ and $c'$ depend only on $c$. The estimation of the constants $d$ and $c'$ involved in the statement has been the object of intense research. Freiman conjectured in 2008 a formula for the largest volume of such a set. In this paper we prove the conjecture for a general class of sets called chains.

Retracts and algebraic properties of cut algebras
Published in European J. Combin. 69 (2018), 214-236 • View Publication • BIB
We study cut algebras which are toric rings associated to graphs. The key idea is to consider suitable retracts to understand algebraic properties and invariants of such algebras like being a complete intersection, having a linear resolution, or the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. Throughout the paper, we discuss several examples and pose some problems as well.
Packing Hamilton Cycles Online
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is known that w.h.p. the hitting time $τ_{2σ}$ for the random graph process to have minimum degree $2σ$ coincides with the hitting time for $σ$ edge disjoint Hamilton cycles. In this paper we prove an online version of this property. We show that, for a fixed integer $σ\geq 2$, if random edges of $K_n$ are presented one by one then w.h.p. it is possible to color the edges online with $σ$ colors so that at time $τ_{2σ}$, each color class is Hamiltonian.

Random self-similar trees and a hierarchical branching process
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study self-similarity in random binary rooted trees. In a well-understood case of Galton-Watson trees, a distribution on a space of trees is said to be self-similar if it is invariant with respect to the operation of pruning, which cuts the tree leaves. This only happens for the critical Galton-Watson tree (a constant process progeny), which also exhibits other special symmetries. We extend the prune-invariance setup to arbitrary binary trees with edge lengths. In this general case the class of self-similar processes becomes much richer and covers a variety of practically important situations. The main result is construction of the hierarchical branching processes that satisfy various self-similarity definitions (including mean self-similarity and self-similarity in edge-lengths) depending on the process parameters. Taking the limit of averaged stochastic dynamics, as the number of trajectories increases, we obtain a deterministic system of differential equations that describes the process evolution. This system is used to establish a phase transition that separates fading and explosive behavior of the average process progeny. We describe a class of critical Tokunaga processes that happen at the phase transition boundary. They enjoy multiple additional symmetries and include the celebrated critical binary Galton-Watson tree with independent exponential edge length as a special case. Finally, we discuss a duality between trees and continuous functions, and introduce a class of extreme-invariant processes, constructed as the Harris paths of a self-similar hierarchical branching process, whose local minima has the same (linearly scaled) distribution as the original process.

Rules of Three for commutation relations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the following surprisingly widespread phenomenon which we call The Rule of Three: in order for a particular kind of commutation relation to hold for subsequences of elements of a ring labeled by any subset of indices, it is enough that these relations hold for subsets of size one, two, and three.
On semiring complexity of Schur polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Semiring complexity is the version of arithmetic circuit complexity that allows only two operations: addition and multiplication. We show that when the number of variables is fixed, the semiring complexity of a Schur polynomial $s_λ$ is $O(log(λ_1))$; here $λ_1$ is the largest part of the partition $λ$.

Birth of a giant $(k_1,k_2)$-core in the random digraph
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $(k_1,k_2)$-core of a digraph is the largest sub-digraph with minimum in-degree and minimum out-degree at least $k_1$ and $k_2$ respectively. For $\max\{k_1, k_2\} \geq 2$, we establish existence of the threshold edge-density $c^*=c^*(k_1,k_2)$, such that the random digraph $D(n,m)$, on the vertex set $[n]$ with $m$ edges, asymptotically almost surely has a giant $(k_1,k_2)$-core if $m/n> c^*$, and has no $(k_1,k_2)$-core if $m/n<c^*$. Specifically, denoting $\text{P}(\text{Poisson}(z)\ge k)$ by $p_k(z)$, we prove that $c^*=\min\limits_{z_1,z_2}\max\left\{\tfrac{z_1}{p_{k_1}(z_1)p_{k_2-1}(z_2)}; \tfrac{z_2}{p_{k_1-1}(z_1)p_{k_2}(z_2)}\right\}$.

Quantifying minimal non-collinearity among random points
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\varphi_{n,K}$ denote the largest angle in all the triangles with vertices among the $n$ points selected at random in a compact convex subset $K$ of $\mathbb{R}^d$ with nonempty interior, where $d\ge2$. It is shown that the distribution of the random variable $λ_d(K)\,\frac{n^3}{3!}\,(π-\varphi_{n,K})^{d-1}$, where $λ_d(K)$ is a certain positive real number which depends only on the dimension $d$ and the shape of $K$, converges to the standard exponential distribution as $n\to\infty$. By using the Steiner symmetrization, it is also shown that $λ_d(K)$ -- which is referred to in the paper as the elongation of $K$ -- attains its minimum if and only if $K$ is a ball $B^{(d)}$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Finally, the asymptotics of $λ_d(B^{(d)})$ for large $d$ is determined.

Coxeter-Catalan combinatorics and Temperley-Lieb algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce bijections between generalized type $A_n$ noncrossing partitions (that is, associated to arbitrary standard Coxeter elements) and fully commutative elements of the same type. The latter index the diagram basis of the classical Temperley-Lieb algebra, while for each choice of standard Coxeter element the corresponding noncrossing partitions also index a basis, given by the images in the Temperley-Lieb algebra of the simple elements of the dual Garside structure (associated to this choice of standard Coxeter element) of the Artin braid group on $n+1$ strands. We then show that our bijections come from triangular base changes between the diagram basis and the various bases indexed by noncrossing partitions, by explicitly describing the orders giving triangularity. These orders were introduced in a joint paper with Williams and provide exotic lattice structures on noncrossing partitions. Several combinatorial objects are introduced along the way, including an involution on the set of noncrossing partitions.

Some Comments on the Slater number
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph with degree sequence $d_1\geq \ldots \geq d_n$. Slater proposed $s\ell(G)=\min\{ s: (d_1+1)+\cdots+(d_s+1)\geq n\}$ as a lower bound on the domination number $γ(G)$ of $G$. We show that deciding the equality of $γ(G)$ and $s\ell(G)$ for a given graph $G$ is NP-complete but that one can decide efficiently whether $γ(G)>s\ell(G)$ or $γ(G)\leq \left(\left\lceil\ln \left(\frac{n(G)}{s\ell(G)}\right)\right\rceil+1\right)s\ell(G)$. For real numbers $α$ and $β$ with $α\geq \max\{ 0,β\}$, let ${\cal G}(α,β)$ be the class of non-null graphs $G$ such that every non-null subgraph $H$ of $G$ has at most $αn(H)-β$ many edges. Generalizing a result of Desormeaux, Haynes, and Henning, we show that $γ(G)\leq (2α+1)s\ell(G)-2β$ for every graph $G$ in ${\cal G}(α,β)$ with $α\leq \frac{3}{2}$. Furthermore, we show that $γ(G)/s\ell(G)$ is bounded for graphs $G$ in ${\cal G}(α,β)$ if and only if $α<2$. For an outerplanar graph $G$ with $s\ell(G)\geq 2$, we show $γ(G)\leq 6s\ell(G)-6$. In analogy to $s\ell(G)$, we propose $s\ell_t(G)=\min\{ s: d_1+\cdots+d_s\geq n\}$ as a lower bound on the total domination number. Strengthening results due to Raczek as well as Chellali and Haynes, we show that $s\ell_t(T)\geq \frac{n+2-n_1}{2}$ for every tree $T$ of order $n$ at least $2$ with $n_1$ endvertices.
