On functors between categories with colored morphisms
In this paper, we consider categories with colored morphisms and functors such that morphisms assigned to morphisms with a common color have a common color. In this paper, we construct a morphism-colored functor such that any morphism-colored functor from a given small morphism-colored groupoid to any discrete morphism-colored category factors through it. We also apply the main result to a schemoid constructed from a Hamming scheme.

Tutte polynomials and random-cluster models in Bernoulli cell complexes
This paper studies Bernoulli cell complexes from the perspective of persistent homology, Tutte polynomials, and random-cluster models. Following the previous work [9], we first show the asymptotic order of the expected lifetime sum of the persistent homology for the Bernoulli cell complex process on the $\ell$-cubical lattice. Then, an explicit formula of the expected lifetime sum using the Tutte polynomial is derived. Furthermore, we study a higher dimensional generalization of the random-cluster model derived from the Edwards-Sokal type coupling, and show some basic results such as the positive association and the relation to the Tutte polynomial.

Once punctured disks, non-convex polygons, and pointihedra
Published in Ann. Combin. 22(3), 619-640 (2018) • View Publication • BIB
We explore several families of flip-graphs, all related to polygons or punctured polygons. In particular, we consider the topological flip-graphs of once-punctured polygons which, in turn, contain all possible geometric flip-graphs of polygons with a marked point as embedded sub-graphs. Our main focus is on the geometric properties of these graphs and how they relate to one another. In particular, we show that the embeddings between them are strongly convex (or, said otherwise, totally geodesic). We also find bounds on the diameters of these graphs, sometimes using the strongly convex embeddings. Finally, we show how these graphs relate to different polytopes, namely type D associahedra and a family of secondary polytopes which we call pointihedra.

On Minimum Maximal Distance-k Matchings
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 20 no. 1, Graph Theory (January 11, 2018) dmtcs:3271 • View Publication • BIB
We study the computational complexity of several problems connected with finding a maximal distance-$k$ matching of minimum cardinality or minimum weight in a given graph. We introduce the class of $k$-equimatchable graphs which is an edge analogue of $k$-equipackable graphs. We prove that the recognition of $k$-equimatchable graphs is co-NP-complete for any fixed $k \ge 2$. We provide a simple characterization for the class of strongly chordal graphs with equal $k$-packing and $k$-domination numbers. We also prove that for any fixed integer $\ell \ge 1$ the problem of finding a minimum weight maximal distance-$2\ell$ matching and the problem of finding a minimum weight $(2 \ell - 1)$-independent dominating set cannot be approximated in polynomial time in chordal graphs within a factor of $δ\ln |V(G)|$ unless $\mathrm{P} = \mathrm{NP}$, where $δ$ is a fixed constant (thereby improving the NP-hardness result of Chang for the independent domination case). Finally, we show the NP-hardness of the minimum maximal induced matching and independent dominating set problems in large-girth planar graphs. Note: This version (as compared to the journal submission) contains corrections to Section 4.

Competition numbers of planar graphs
In this paper, we relate the competition number of a graph to its edge clique cover number by presenting a tight inequality $k(G) \ge θ_e(G)-|V(G)|+\widetilde{k}(G)$ where $θ_e(G)$, $k(G)$, and $\widetilde{k}(G)$ are the edge clique cover number, the competition number, and the co-competition number of a graph $G$, respectively. By utilizing this inequality and a notion of competition-effective edge clique cover, we obtain some meaningful results on competition numbers of planar graphs.

Sharp thresholds for half-random games II
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study biased Maker-Breaker positional games between two players, one of whom is playing randomly against an opponent with an optimal strategy. In this work we focus on the case of Breaker playing randomly and Maker being "clever". The reverse scenario is treated in a separate paper. We determine the sharp threshold bias of classical games played on the edge set of the complete graph $K_n$, such as connectivity, perfect matching, Hamiltonicity, and minimum degree-$1$. In all of these games, the threshold is equal to the trivial upper bound implied by the number of edges needed for Maker to occupy a winning set. Moreover, we show that the clever Maker can not only win against an asymptotically optimal bias, but can do so very fast, wasting only logarithmically many moves (while the winning set sizes are linear in $n$).

On the insertion time of random walk cuckoo hashing
Published • View Publication • BIB
Cuckoo Hashing is a hashing scheme invented by Pagh and Rodler. It uses $d\geq 2$ distinct hash functions to insert items into the hash table. It has been an open question for some time as to the expected time for Random Walk Insertion to add items. We show that if the number of hash functions $d=O(1)$ is sufficiently large, then the expected insertion time is $O(1)$ per item.
The weight distribution of the self-dual $[128,64]$ polarity design code
Published in Advances Math. Communications 10 (2016), 643-648 • View Publication • BIB
The weight distribution of the binary self-dual $[128,64]$ code being the extended code $C^{*}$ of the code $C$ spanned by the incidence vectors of the blocks of the polarity design in $PG(6,2)$ [11] is computed. It is shown also that $R(3,7)$ and $C^{*}$ have no self-dual $[128,64,d]$ neighbor with $d \in \{ 20, 24 \}$.

On the nonexistence of $k$-reptile simplices in $\mathbb R^3$ and $\mathbb R^4$
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 24 (2017), Issue 3, P3.1, 44 pp • Search Publication
A $d$-dimensional simplex $S$ is called a $k$-reptile (or a $k$-reptile simplex) if it can be tiled by $k$ simplices with disjoint interiors that are all mutually congruent and similar to $S$. For $d=2$, triangular $k$-reptiles exist for all $k$ of the form $a^2, 3a^2$ or $a^2 + b^2$ and they have been completely characterized by Snover, Waiveris, and Williams. On the other hand, the only $k$-reptile simplices that are known for $d \ge 3$, have $k = m^d$, where $m$ is a positive integer. We substantially simplify the proof by Matoušek and the second author that for $d=3$, $k$-reptile tetrahedra can exist only for $k=m^3$. We then prove a weaker analogue of this result for $d=4$ by showing that four-dimensional $k$-reptile simplices can exist only for $k=m^2$.
Intervals of Antichains and Their Decompositions
An antichain of subsets is a set of subsets such that no subset in the antichain is a proper subset of any other subset in the antichain. The Dedekind number counts the total number of antichains of subsets of an n-element set. This paper investigates the interval structure of the lattice of antichains. Several partitioning theorems and counting formulas for the size of intervals are derived.

Exponentially Many 4-List-Colorings of Triangle-Free Graphs on Surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
Thomassen proved that every planar graph $G$ on $n$ vertices has at least $2^{n/9}$ distinct $L$-colorings if $L$ is a 5-list-assignment for $G$ and at least $2^{n/10000}$ distinct $L$-colorings if $L$ is a 3-list-assignment for $G$ and $G$ has girth at least five. Postle and Thomas proved that if $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices embedded on a surface $Σ$ of genus $g$, then there exist constants $ε,c_g > 0$ such that if $G$ has an $L$-coloring, then $G$ has at least $c_g2^{εn}$ distinct $L$-colorings if $L$ is a 5-list-assignment for $G$ or if $L$ is a 3-list-assignment for $G$ and $G$ has girth at least five. More generally, they proved that there exist constants $ε,α>0$ such that if $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices embedded in a surface $Σ$ of fixed genus $g$, $H$ is a proper subgraph of $G$, and $φ$ is an $L$-coloring of $H$ that extends to an $L$-coloring of $G$, then $φ$ extends to at least $2^{ε(n - α(g + |V(H)|))}$ distinct $L$-colorings of $G$ if $L$ is a 5-list-assignment or if $L$ is a 3-list-assignment and $G$ has girth at least five. We prove the same result if $G$ is triangle-free and $L$ is a 4-list-assignment of $G$, where $ε=\frac{1}{8}$, and $α= 130$.

Tangles and Connectivity in Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper is a short introduction to the theory of tangles, both in graphs and general connectivity systems. An emphasis is put on the correspondence between tangles of order k and k-connected components. In particular, we prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the triconnected components of a graph and its tangles of order 3.

On the number of bases of almost all matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a matroid $M$ of rank $r$ on $n$ elements, let $b(M)$ denote the fraction of bases of $M$ among the subsets of the ground set with cardinality $r$. We show that $$Ω(1/n)\leq 1-b(M)\leq O(\log(n)^3/n)\text{ as }n\rightarrow \infty$$ for asymptotically almost all matroids $M$ on $n$ elements. We derive that asymptotically almost all matroids on $n$ elements (1) have a $U_{k,2k}$-minor, whenever $k\leq O(\log(n))$, (2) have girth $\geq Ω(\log(n))$, (3) have Tutte connectivity $\geq Ω(\sqrt{\log(n)})$, and (4) do not arise as the truncation of another matroid. Our argument is based on a refined method for writing compressed descriptions of any given matroid, which allows bounding the number of matroids in a class relative to the number of sparse paving matroids.
Schur polynomials and matrix positivity preservers
Published • View Publication • BIB
A classical result by Schoenberg (1942) identifies all real-valued functions that preserve positive semidefiniteness (psd) when applied entrywise to matrices of arbitrary dimension. Schoenberg's work has continued to attract significant interest, including renewed recent attention due to applications in high-dimensional statistics. However, despite a great deal of effort in the area, an effective characterization of entrywise functions preserving positivity in a fixed dimension remains elusive to date. As a first step, we characterize new classes of polynomials preserving positivity in fixed dimension. The proof of our main result is representation theoretic, and employs Schur polynomials. An alternate, variational approach also leads to several interesting consequences including (a) a hitherto unexplored Schubert cell-type stratification of the cone of psd matrices, (b) new connections between generalized Rayleigh quotients of Hadamard powers and Schur polynomials, and (c) a description of the joint kernels of Hadamard powers.

Root polytopes, Tutte polynomials, and a duality theorem for bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a connected bipartite graph with color classes E and V and root polytope Q. Regarding the hypergraph (V,E) induced by G, we prove that its interior polynomial is equivalent to the Ehrhart polynomial of Q, which in turn is equivalent to the h-vector of any triangulation of Q. It follows that the interior polynomials of (V,E) and its transpose (E,V) agree. When G is a complete bipartite graph, our result recovers a well known hypergeometric identity due to Saalschütz. It also implies that certain extremal coefficients in the Homfly polynomial of a special alternating link can be read off of an associated Floer homology group.
Bounds on the Maximal Minimum Distance of Linear Locally Repairable Codes
Locally repairable codes (LRCs) are error correcting codes used in distributed data storage. Besides a global level, they enable errors to be corrected locally, reducing the need for communication between storage nodes. There is a close connection between almost affine LRCs and matroid theory which can be utilized to construct good LRCs and derive bounds on their performance. A generalized Singleton bound for linear LRCs with parameters $(n,k,d,r,δ)$ was given in [N. Prakash et al., "Optimal Linear Codes with a Local-Error-Correction Property", IEEE Int. Symp. Inf. Theory]. In this paper, a LRC achieving this bound is called perfect. Results on the existence and nonexistence of linear perfect $(n,k,d,r,δ)$-LRCs were given in [W. Song et al., "Optimal locally repairable codes", IEEE J. Sel. Areas Comm.]. Using matroid theory, these existence and nonexistence results were later strengthened in [T. Westerbäck et al., "On the Combinatorics of Locally Repairable Codes", Arxiv: 1501.00153], which also provided a general lower bound on the maximal achievable minimum distance $d_{\rm{max}}(n,k,r,δ)$ that a linear LRC with parameters $(n,k,r,δ)$ can have. This article expands the class of parameters $(n,k,d,r,δ)$ for which there exist perfect linear LRCs and improves the lower bound for $d_{\rm{max}}(n,k,r,δ)$. Further, this bound is proved to be optimal for the class of matroids that is used to derive the existence bounds of linear LRCs.

Aperiodic Crosscorrelation of Sequences Derived from Characters
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is shown that pairs of maximal linear recursive sequences (m-sequences) typically have mean square aperiodic crosscorrelation on par with that of random sequences, but that if one takes a pair of m-sequences where one is the reverse of the other, and shifts them appropriately, one can get significantly lower mean square aperiodic crosscorrelation. Sequence pairs with even lower mean square aperiodic crosscorrelation are constructed by taking a Legendre sequence, cyclically shifting it, and then cutting it (approximately) in half and using the halves as the sequences of the pair. In some of these constructions, the mean square aperiodic crosscorrelation can be lowered further if one truncates or periodically extends (appends) the sequences. Exact asymptotic formulae for mean squared aperiodic crosscorrelation are proved for sequences derived from additive characters (including m-sequences and modified versions thereof) and multiplicative characters (including Legendre sequences and their relatives). Data is presented that shows that sequences of modest length have performance that closely approximates the asymptotic formulae.

Quasi-4-Connected Components
We introduce a new decomposition of a graphs into quasi-4-connected components, where we call a graph quasi-4-connected if it is 3-connected and it only has separations of order 3 that remove a single vertex. Moreover, we give a cubic time algorithm computing the decomposition of a given graph. Our decomposition into quasi-4-connected components refines the well-known decompositions of graphs into biconnected and triconnected components. We relate our decomposition to Robertson and Seymour's theory of tangles by establishing a correspondence between the quasi-4-connected components of a graph and its tangles of order 4.

Low Correlation Sequences from Linear Combinations of Characters
Published • View Publication • BIB
Pairs of binary sequences formed using linear combinations of multiplicative characters of finite fields are exhibited that, when compared to random sequence pairs, simultaneously achieve significantly lower mean square autocorrelation values (for each sequence in the pair) and significantly lower mean square crosscorrelation values. If we define crosscorrelation merit factor analogously to the usual merit factor for autocorrelation, and if we define demerit factor as the reciprocal of merit factor, then randomly selected binary sequence pairs are known to have an average crosscorrelation demerit factor of $1$. Our constructions provide sequence pairs with crosscorrelation demerit factor significantly less than $1$, and at the same time, the autocorrelation demerit factors of the individual sequences can also be made significantly less than $1$ (which also indicates better than average performance). The sequence pairs studied here provide combinations of autocorrelation and crosscorrelation performance that are not achievable using sequences formed from single characters, such as maximal linear recursive sequences (m-sequences) and Legendre sequences. In this study, exact asymptotic formulae are proved for the autocorrelation and crosscorrelation merit factors of sequence pairs formed using linear combinations of multiplicative characters. Data is presented that shows that the asymptotic behavior is closely approximated by sequences of modest length.
