Spectral characterization of matchings in graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A spectral characterization of the matching number (the size of a maximum matching) of a graph is given. More precisely, it is shown that the graphs G of order n whose matching number is k are precisely those graphs with the maximum skew rank 2k such that for any given set of k distinct nonzero purely imaginary numbers there is a real skew-symmetric matrix A with graph G whose spectrum consists of the given k numbers, their conjugate pairs, and n-2k zeros.

Asymptotics of the number of involutions in finite classical groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Answering a question of Geoff Robinson, we compute the large n limiting proportion of i(n,q)/q^[n^2/2], where i(n,q) denotes the number of involutions in GL(n,q). We give similar results for the finite unitary, symplectic, and orthogonal groups, in both odd and even characteristic. At the heart of this work are certain new "sum=product" identities. Our self-contained treatment of the enumeration of involutions in even characteristic symplectic and orthogonal groups may also be of interest.

Extremal results for odd cycles in sparse pseudorandom graphs
Published in Combinatorica 34 (2014), no. 4, 379-406 • View Publication • BIB
We consider extremal problems for subgraphs of pseudorandom graphs. For graphs $F$ and $Γ$ the generalized Turán density $π_F(Γ)$ denotes the density of a maximum subgraph of $Γ$, which contains no copy of~$F$. Extending classical Turán type results for odd cycles, we show that $π_{F}(Γ)=1/2$ provided $F$ is an odd cycle and $Γ$ is a sufficiently pseudorandom graph. In particular, for $(n,d,λ)$-graphs $Γ$, i.e., $n$-vertex, $d$-regular graphs with all non-trivial eigenvalues in the interval $[-λ,λ]$, our result holds for odd cycles of length $\ell$, provided \[ λ^{\ell-2}\ll \frac{d^{\ell-1}}n\log(n)^{-(\ell-2)(\ell-3)}\,. \] Up to the polylog-factor this verifies a conjecture of Krivelevich, Lee, and Sudakov. For triangles the condition is best possible and was proven previously by Sudakov, Szabó, and Vu, who addressed the case when $F$ is a complete graph. A construction of Alon and Kahale (based on an earlier construction of Alon for triangle-free $(n,d,λ)$-graphs) shows that our assumption on $Γ$ is best possible up to the polylog-factor for every odd $\ell\geq 5$.

The variation of the Randic index with regard to minimum and maximum degree
The variation of the Randić index $ R'(G) $ of a graph $G$ is defined by\ $R(G) = \sum_{uv \in E(G)}\frac 1{\max \{d(u) d(v)\}}$, where $d(u)$ is the degree of vertex $u$ and the summation extends over all edges $uv$ of $G$. Let $G(k,n)$ be the set of connected simple $n$-vertex graphs with minimum vertex degree $k$. In this paper we found in $G(k,n)$ graphs for which the variation of the Randić index attains its minimum value. When $k \leq \frac n2$ the extremal graphs are complete split graphs $K_{k,n-k}^*$, which only vertices of two degrees, i.e. degree $k$ and degree $n-1$, and the number of vertices of degree $k$ is $n-k$, while the number of vertices of degree $n-1$ is $k$. For $k \geq \frac n2$ the extremal graphs have also vertices of two degrees $k$ and $n-1$, and the number of vertices of degree $k$ is $\frac n2$. Further, we generalized results for graphs with given maximum degree.

Sequences with small correlation
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr. 78(1), 237-267, 2016 • View Publication • BIB
The extent to which a sequence of finite length differs from a shifted version of itself is measured by its aperiodic autocorrelations. Of particular interest are sequences whose entries are 1 or -1, called binary sequences, and sequences whose entries are complex numbers of unit magnitude, called unimodular sequences. Since the 1950s, there is sustained interest in sequences with small aperiodic autocorrelations relative to the sequence length. One of the main motivations is that a sequence with small aperiodic autocorrelations is intrinsically suited for the separation of signals from noise, and therefore has natural applications in digital communications. This survey reviews the state of knowledge concerning the two central problems in this area: How small can the aperiodic autocorrelations of a binary or a unimodular sequence collectively be and how can we efficiently find the best such sequences? Since the analysis and construction of sequences with small aperiodic autocorrelations is closely tied to the (often much easier) analysis of periodic autocorrelation properties, several fundamental results on corresponding problems in the periodic setting are also reviewed.
The List Distinguishing Number of Kneser Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is said to be $k$-distinguishable if the vertex set can be colored using $k$ colors such that no non-trivial automorphism fixes every color class, and the distinguishing number $D(G)$ is the least integer $k$ for which $G$ is $k$-distinguishable. If for each $v\in V(G)$ we have a list $L(v)$ of colors, and we stipulate that the color assigned to vertex $v$ comes from its list $L(v)$ then $G$ is said to be $\mathcal{L}$-distinguishable where $\mathcal{L} =\{L(v)\}_{v\in V(G)}$. The list distinguishing number of a graph, denoted $D_l(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ such that every collection of lists $\mathcal{L}$ with $|L(v)|=k$ admits an $\mathcal{L}$-distinguishing coloring. In this paper, we prove that $D_l(G)=D(G)$ when $G$ is a Kneser graph.

A sequence of triangle-free pseudorandom graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A construction of Alon yields a sequence of highly pseudorandom triangle-free graphs with edge density significantly higher than one might expect from comparison with random graphs. We give an alternative construction for such graphs.

On 2K2-free graphs - Structural and Combinatorial View
A connected graph is 2K2-free if it does not contain a pair of independent edges as an induced subgraph. In this paper, we present the structural characterization of minimal vertex separator and show that there are polynomial number of minimal vertex separators in 2K2-free graphs. Further, using the enumeration we show that finding minimum connected vertex separator in 2K2-free graphs is polynomial time solvable. We highlight that finding minimum connected vertex separator is NP-complete in Chordality 5 graphs, which is a super graph class of 2K2-free graphs. Other study includes, enumeration of all distinct maximal independent sets and testing 2K2-free graphs. Also, we present an polynomial time algorithm for feedback vertex set problem in the subclass of 2K2-free graphs.

Isotropic matroids III: Connectivity
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 24(2), #P2.49 (2017) • View Publication • BIB
The isotropic matroid $M[IAS(G)]$ of a graph $G$ is a binary matroid, which is equivalent to the isotropic system introduced by Bouchet. In this paper we discuss four notions of connectivity related to isotropic matroids and isotropic systems. We show that the isotropic system connectivity defined by Bouchet is equivalent to vertical connectivity of $M[IAS(G)]$, and if $G$ has at least four vertices, then $M[IAS(G)]$ is vertically 5-connected if and only if $G$ is prime (in the sense of Cunningham's split decomposition). We also show that $M[IAS(G)]$ is $3$-connected if and only if $G$ is connected and has neither a pendant vertex nor a pair of twin vertices. Our most interesting theorem is that if $G$ has $n\geq7$ vertices then $M[IAS(G)]$ is not vertically $n$-connected. This abstract-seeming result is equivalent to the more concrete assertion that $G$ is locally equivalent to a graph with a vertex of degree $<\frac{n-1}{2}$.

On the structure of graphs with given odd girth and large minimum degree
Published in J. Graph Theory 80 (2015), no. 1, 69-81 • View Publication • BIB
We study minimum degree conditions for which a graph with given odd girth has a simple structure. For example, the classical work of Andrásfai, Erd\H os, and Sós implies that every $n$-vertex graph with odd girth $2k+1$ and minimum degree bigger than $\frac{2}{2k+1}n$ must be bipartite. We consider graphs with a weaker condition on the minimum degree. Generalizing results of Häggkvist and of Häggkvist and Jin for the cases $k=2$ and $3$, we show that every $n$-vertex graph with odd girth $2k+1$ and minimum degree bigger than $\frac{3}{4k}n$ is homomorphic to the cycle of length $2k+1$. This is best possible in the sense that there are graphs with minimum degree $\frac{3}{4k}n$ and odd girth $2k+1$ which are not homomorphic to the cycle of length $2k+1$. Similar results were obtained by Brandt and Ribe-Baumann.

Sharp bounds for ordinary and signless Laplacian spectral radii of uniform hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give sharp upper bounds for the ordinary spectral radius and signless Laplacian spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph in terms of the average $2$-degrees or degrees of vertices, respectively, and we also give a lower bound for the ordinary spectral radius. We also compare these bounds with known ones.
On Christoffel and standard words and their derivatives
We introduce and study natural derivatives for Christoffel and finite standard words, as well as for characteristic Sturmian words. These derivatives, which are realized as inverse images under suitable morphisms, preserve the aforementioned classes of words. In the case of Christoffel words, the morphisms involved map $a$ to $a^{k+1}b$ (resp.,~$ab^{k}$) and $b$ to $a^{k}b$ (resp.,~$ab^{k+1}$) for a suitable $k>0$. As long as derivatives are longer than one letter, higher-order derivatives are naturally obtained. We define the depth of a Christoffel or standard word as the smallest order for which the derivative is a single letter. We give several combinatorial and arithmetic descriptions of the depth, and (tight) lower and upper bounds for it.

Distinguishing number and distinguishing index of certain graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The distinguishing number (index) $D(G)$ ($D'(G)$) of a graph $G$ is the least integer $d$ such that $G$ has an vertex labeling (edge labeling) with $d$ labels that is preserved only by a trivial automorphism. In this paper we compute these two parameters for some specific graphs. Also we study the distinguishing number and the distinguishing index of corona product of two graphs.

Relations on words
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the first part of this survey, we present classical notions arising in combinatorics on words: growth function of a language, complexity function of an infinite word, pattern avoidance, periodicity and uniform recurrence. Our presentation tries to set up a unified framework with respect to a given binary relation. In the second part, we mainly focus on abelian equivalence, $k$-abelian equivalence, combinatorial coefficients and associated relations, Parikh matrices and $M$-equivalence. In particular, some new refinements of abelian equivalence are introduced.
The Abelian Sandpile Model on Fractal Graphs
We study the Abelian sandpile model (ASM), a process where grains of sand are placed on a graph's vertices. When the number of grains on a vertex is at least its degree, one grain is distributed to each neighboring vertex. This model has been shown to form fractal patterns on the integer lattice, and using these fractal patterns as motivation, we consider the model on graph approximations of post critically finite (p.c.f) fractals. We determine asymptotic behavior of the diameter of sites toppled and characterize graphs which exhibit a periodic number of grains with respect to the initial placement.

Universal geometric coefficients for the four-punctured sphere
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct universal geometric coefficients for the cluster algebra associated to the four-punctured sphere and obtain, as a by-product, the g-vectors of cluster variables. We also construct the rational part of the mutation fan. These constructions rely on a classification of the allowable curves (the curves which can appear in quasi-laminations). The classification allows us to prove the Null Tangle Property for the four-punctured sphere, thus adding this surface to a short list of surfaces for which this property is known. The Null Tangle Property then implies that the shear coordinates of allowable curves are the universal coefficients. We compute shear coordinates explicitly to obtain universal geometric coefficients.

Generating functions for purely crossing partitions
The generating function for the number of purely crossing partitions of {1,...,n} is found in terms of the generating function for Bell numbers. Further results about generating functions for asymptotic moments of certain random Vandermonde matrices are derived.

New results on sum-products in R
Published • View Publication • BIB
We improve a previous sum--products estimates in R, namely, we obtain that max{|A+A|,|AA|} \gg |A|^{4/3+c}, where c any number less than 5/9813. New lower bounds for sums of sets with small the product set are found. Also we prove some pure energy sum--products results, improving a result of Balog and Wooley, in particular.
