The isomorphic version of Brualdies nestedness is in P
Published • View Publication • BIB
The discrepancy BR for an $m \times n$ $0,1$-matrix from Brualdi and Sanderson \cite{Brualdi1998} counts the minimum number of $1$'s which need to be shifted in each row to the left to achieve its Ferrers matrix, i.e. each row consists of consecutive $1$'s followed by consecutive $0$'s. For ecological bipartite networks BR describes how nested a set of relationships is. Since different labeled matrices can be isomorphic but possess different discrepancies, we define a metric determining the minimum discrepancy in an isomorphic class. We give a reduction to $k\leq n$ minimum weighted perfect matching problems.

Generalized chord diagram expansions of Dyson-Schwinger equations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Series solutions for a large family of single equation Dyson-Schwinger equations are given as expansions over decorated rooted connected chord diagrams. The analytic input to the new expansions are the expansions of the regularized integrals for the primitive graphs building the Dyson-Schwinger equation. Each decorated chord diagram contributes a weighted monomial in the coefficients of the expansions of the primitives and so indexes the analytic solution in a tightly controlled way.

Edge Lower Bounds for List Critical Graphs, via Discharging
Published in Combinatorica. Vol. 38(5), October 2018, pp. 1045-1065 • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is $k$-critical if $G$ is not $(k-1)$-colorable, but every proper subgraph of $G$ is $(k-1)$-colorable. A graph $G$ is $k$-choosable if $G$ has an $L$-coloring from every list assignment $L$ with $|L(v)|=k$ for all $v$, and a graph $G$ is \emph{$k$-list-critical} if $G$ is not $(k-1)$-choosable, but every proper subgraph of $G$ is $(k-1)$-choosable. The problem of bounding (from below) the number of edges in a $k$-critical graph has been widely studied, starting with work of Gallai and culminating with the seminal results of Kostochka and Yancey, who essentially solved the problem. In this paper, we improve the best lower bound on the number of edges in a $k$-list-critical graph. Our proof uses the discharging method, which makes it simpler and more modular than previous work in this area.
Metric Dimension of Bounded Tree-length Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The notion of resolving sets in a graph was introduced by Slater (1975) and Harary and Melter (1976) as a way of uniquely identifying every vertex in a graph. A set of vertices in a graph is a resolving set if for any pair of vertices x and y there is a vertex in the set which has distinct distances to x and y. A smallest resolving set in a graph is called a metric basis and its size, the metric dimension of the graph. The problem of computing the metric dimension of a graph is a well-known NP-hard problem and while it was known to be polynomial time solvable on trees, it is only recently that efforts have been made to understand its computational complexity on various restricted graph classes. In recent work, Foucaud et al. (2015) showed that this problem is NP-complete even on interval graphs. They complemented this result by also showing that it is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) parameterized by the metric dimension of the graph. In this work, we show that this FPT result can in fact be extended to all graphs of bounded tree-length. This includes well-known classes like chordal graphs, AT-free graphs and permutation graphs. We also show that this problem is FPT parameterized by the modular-width of the input graph.

Improved Bounds for the Excluded Grid Theorem
We study the Excluded Grid Theorem of Robertson and Seymour. This is a fundamental result in graph theory, that states that there is some function $f: Z^+\rightarrow Z^+$, such that for all integers $g>0$, every graph of treewidth at least $f(g)$ contains the $(g\times g)$-grid as a minor. Until recently, the best known upper bounds on $f$ were super-exponential in $g$. A recent work of Chekuri and Chuzhoy provided the first polynomial bound, by showing that treewidth $f(g)=O(g^{98}\operatorname{poly}\log g)$ is sufficient to ensure the existence of the $(g\times g)$-grid minor in any graph. In this paper we improve this bound to $f(g)=O(g^{19}\operatorname{poly}\log g)$. We introduce a number of new techniques, including a conceptually simple and almost entirely self-contained proof of the theorem that achieves a polynomial bound on $f(g)$.

On p-adic approximation of sums of binomial coefficients
Published in Journal of Mathematical Sciences 233:5 (2018), 626-634 • View Publication • BIB
We propose higher-order generalizations of Jacobsthal's $p$-adic approximation for binomial coefficients. Our results imply explicit formulae for linear combinations of binomial coefficients $\binom{ip}{p}$ ($i=1,2,\dots$) that are divisible by arbitrarily large powers of prime $p$.

Around the Complete Intersection Theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
The celebrated theorem of Ahlswede and Khachatrian determines the maximum size of a family of $k$-element subsets of an $n$-element set where the intersection of any two subsets has at least $r$ elements. This survey first gives a historical introduction, then it shows some applications.

On the number of equivalence classes of invertible Boolean functions under action of permutation of variables on domain and range
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $V_n$ be the number of equivalence classes of invertible maps from $\{0,1\}^n$ to $\{0,1\}^n$, under action of permutation of variables on domain and range. So far, the values $V_n$ have been known for $n\le 6$. This paper describes the procedure by which the values of $V_n$ are calculated for $n\le 30$.

A convolution formula for Tutte polynomials of arithmetic matroids and other combinatorial structures
In this note we generalize the convolution formula for the Tutte polynomial of Kook-Reiner-Stanton and Etienne-Las Vergnas to a more general setting that includes both arithmetic matroids and delta-matroids. As corollaries, we obtain new proofs of two positivity results for pseudo-arithmetic matroids and a combinatorial interpretation of the arithmetic Tutte polynomial at infinitely many points in terms of arithmetic flows and colorings. We also exhibit connections with a decomposition of Dahmen-Micchelli spaces and lattice point counting in zonotopes.

Macdonald's solid-angle sum for real dilations of rational polygons
The solid-angle sum $A_{\mathcal{P}} (t)$ of a rational polytope ${\mathcal{P}} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, with $t \in \mathbb{Z}$ was first investigated by I.G. Macdonald. Using our Fourier-analytic methods, we are able to establish an explicit formula for $A_{\mathcal{P}} (t)$, for any real dilation $t$ and any rational polygon ${\mathcal{P}} \subset \mathbb{R}^2$. Our formulation sheds additional light on previous results, for lattice-point enumerating functions of triangles, which are usually confined to the case of integer dilations. Our approach differs from that of Hardy and Littlewood in 1992, but offers an alternate point of view for enumerating weighted lattice points in real dilations of real triangles.

Monotone Subsequences in High-Dimensional Permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper is part of the ongoing effort to study high-dimensional permutations. We prove the analogue to the Erdős-Szekeres theorem: For every $k\ge1$, every order-$n$ $k$-dimensional permutation contains a monotone subsequence of length $Ω_{k}\left(\sqrt{n}\right)$, and this is tight. On the other hand, and unlike the classical case, the longest monotone subsequence in a random $k$-dimensional permutation of order $n$ is asymptotically almost surely $Θ_{k}\left(n^{\frac{k}{k+1}}\right)$.

Spanning Trees and Mahler Measure
The complexity of a finite connected graph is its number of spanning trees; for a non-connected graph it is the product of complexities of its connected components. If $G$ is an infinite graph with cofinite free ${\mathbb Z}^d$-symmetry, then the logarithmic Mahler measure $m(Δ)$ of its Laplacian polynomial $Δ$ is the exponential growth rate of the complexity of finite quotients of $G$. It is bounded below by $m(Δ({\mathbb G}_d))$, where ${\mathbb G}_d$ is the grid graph of dimension $d$. The growth rates $m(Δ({\mathbb G}_d))$ are asymptotic to $\log 2d$ as $d$ tends to infinity. If $m(Δ(G))\ne 0$, then $m(Δ(G)) \ge \log 2$. An application to determinant growth rates of families of alternating links arising from planar graphs is given.

Inverting the Rational Sweep Map
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a simple algorithm for inverting the sweep map on rational $(m,n)$-Dyck paths for a co-prime pair $(m,n)$ of positive integers. This work is inspired by Thomas-Williams work on the modular sweep map. A simple proof of the validity of our algorithm is included.

Linear recurrence relations in $Q$-systems via lattice points in polyhedra
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the sequence of the characters of the Kirillov-Reshetikhin (KR) modules $W_{m}^{(a)}, m\in \mathbb{Z}_{m\geq 0}$ associated to a node $a$ of the Dynkin diagram of a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ satisfies a linear recurrence relation except for some cases in types $E_7$ and $E_8$. To this end we use the $Q$-system and the existing lattice point summation formula for the decomposition of KR modules, known as domino removal rules when $\mathfrak{g}$ is of classical type. As an application, we show how to reduce some unproven lattice point summation formulas in exceptional types to finite problems in linear algebra and also give a new proof of them in type $G_2$, which is the only completely proven case when KR modules have an irreducible summand with multiplicity greater than 1. We also apply the recurrence to prove that the function $\dim W_{m}^{(a)}$ is a quasipolynomial in $m$ and establish its properties. We conjecture that there exists a rational polytope such that its Ehrhart quasipolynomial in $m$ is $\dim W_{m}^{(a)}$ and the lattice points of its $m$-th dilate carry the same crystal structure as the crystal associated with $W_{m}^{(a)}$.

Difference sets are not multiplicatively closed
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that for any finite set A of real numbers its difference set D:=A-A has large product set and quotient set, namely, |DD|, |D/D| \gg |D|^{1+c}, where c>0 is an absolute constant. A similar result takes place in the prime field F_p for sufficiently small D. It gives, in particular, that multiplicative subgroups of size less than p^{4/5-\eps} cannot be represented in the form A-A for any A from F_p.

Monodromy and K-theory of Schubert curves via generalized jeu de taquin
Published • View Publication • BIB
We establish a combinatorial connection between the real geometry and the $K$-theory of complex Schubert curves $S(λ_\bullet)$, which are one-dimensional Schubert problems defined with respect to flags osculating the rational normal curve. In a previous paper, the second author showed that the real geometry of these curves is described by the orbits of a map $ω$ on skew tableaux, defined as the commutator of jeu de taquin rectification and promotion. In particular, the real locus of the Schubert curve is naturally a covering space of $\mathbb{RP}^1$, with $ω$ as the monodromy operator. We provide a local algorithm for computing $ω$ without rectifying the skew tableau, and show that certain steps in our algorithm are in bijective correspondence with Pechenik and Yong's genomic tableaux, which enumerate the $K$-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson coefficient associated to the Schubert curve. We then give purely combinatorial proofs of several numerical results involving the $K$-theory and real geometry of $S(λ_\bullet)$.

A decomposition theorem for {ISK4,wheel}-free trigraphs
An ISK4 in a graph G is an induced subgraph of G that is isomorphic to a subdivision of K4 (the complete graph on four vertices). A wheel is a graph that consists of a chordless cycle, together with a vertex that has at least three neighbors in the cycle. A graph is {ISK4,wheel}-free if it has no ISK4 and does not contain a wheel as an induced subgraph. A "trigraph" is a generalization of a graph in which some pairs of vertices have "undetermined" adjacency. We prove a decomposition theorem for {ISK4,wheel}-free trigraphs. Our proof closely follows the proof of a decomposition theorem for ISK4-free graphs due to Lévêque, Maffray, and Trotignon (On graphs with no induced subdivision of K4. J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 102(4):924-947, 2012).
Simplicial orders and chordality
Published • View Publication • BIB
Chordal clutters in the sense of [14] and [3] are defined via simplicial orders. Their circuit ideal has a linear resolution, independent of the characteristic of the base field. We show that any Betti sequence of an ideal with linear resolution appears as the Betti sequence of the circuit ideal of such a chordal clutter. Associated with any simplicial order is a sequence of integers which we call the $λ$-sequence of the chordal clutter. All possible $λ$-sequences are characterized. They are intimately related to the Hilbert function of a suitable standard graded $K$-algebra attached to the chordal clutter. By the $λ$-sequence of a chordal clutter we determine other numerical invariants of the circuit ideal, such as the $\textbf{h}$-vector and the Betti numbers.

Near equipartitions of colored point sets
Published in Computational Geometry: Theory and Applications 65 (2017), 35-42 • View Publication • BIB
Suppose that $nk$ points in general position in the plane are colored red and blue, with at least $n$ points of each color. We show that then there exist $n$ pairwise disjoint convex sets, each of them containing $k$ of the points, and each of them containing points of both colors. We also show that if $P$ is a set of $n(d+1)$ points in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$ colored by $d$ colors with at least $n$ points of each color, then there exist $n$ pairwise disjoint $d$-dimensional simplices with vertices in $P$, each of them containing a point of every color. These results can be viewed as a step towards a common generalization of several previously known geometric partitioning results regarding colored point sets.
