Iterated claws have real-rooted genus polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the genus polynomials of the graphs called iterated claws are real-rooted. This continues our work directed toward the 25-year-old conjecture that the genus distribution of every graph is log-concave. We have previously established log-concavity for sequences of graphs constructed by iterative vertex-amalgamation or iterative edge-amalgamation of graphs that satisfy a commonly observable condition on their partitioned genus distributions, even though it had been proved previously that iterative amalgamation does not always preserve real-rootedness of the genus polynomial of the iterated graph. In this paper, the iterated topological operations are adding a claw and adding a 3-cycle, rather than vertex- or edge-amalgamation. Our analysis here illustrates some advantages of employing a matrix representation of the transposition of a set of productions.
Log-concavity of the genus polynomials of Ringel ladders
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Ringel ladder can be formed by a self-bar-amalgamation operation on a symmetric ladder, that is, by joining the root vertices on its end-rungs. The present authors have previously derived criteria under which linear chains of copies of one or more graphs have log-concave genus polynomials. Herein we establish Ringel ladders as the first significant non-linear infinite family of graphs known to have log-concave genus polynomials. We construct an algebraic representation of self-bar-amalgamation as a matrix operation, to be applied to a vector representation of the partitioned genus distribution of a symmetric ladder. Analysis of the resulting genus polynomial involves the use of Chebyshev polynomials. This paper continues our quest to affirm the quarter-century-old conjecture that all graphs have log-concave genus polynomials.
Root geometry of polynomial sequences I: Type $(0,1)$
This paper is concerned with the distribution in the complex plane of the roots of a polynomial sequence $\{W_n(x)\}_{n\ge0}$ given by a recursion $W_n(x)=aW_{n-1}(x)+(bx+c)W_{n-2}(x)$, with $W_0(x)=1$ and $W_1(x)=t(x-r)$, where $a>0$, $b>0$, and $c,t,r\in\mathbb{R}$. Our results include proof of the distinct-real-rootedness of every such polynomial $W_n(x)$, derivation of the best bound for the zero-set $\{x\mid W_n(x)=0\ \text{for some $n\ge1$}\}$, and determination of three precise limit points of this zero-set. Also, we give several applications from combinatorics and topological graph theory.

Measurable circle squaring
Published • View Publication • BIB
Laczkovich proved that if bounded subsets $A$ and $B$ of $R^k$ have the same non-zero Lebesgue measure and the box dimension of the boundary of each set is less than $k$, then there is a partition of $A$ into finitely many parts that can be translated to form a partition of $B$. Here we show that it can be additionally required that each part is both Baire and Lebesgue measurable. As special cases, this gives measurable and translation-only versions of Tarski's circle squaring and Hilbert's third problem.

We study perfect discrete Morse functions on closed oriented n-dimensional manifolds. We show how to compose such functions on connected sums of closed oriented manifolds and how to decompose on connected sums of closed oriented surfaces.
Coxeter arrangements in three dimensions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let ${\mathcal A}$ be a finite real linear hyperplane arrangement in three dimensions. Suppose further that all the regions of ${\mathcal A}$ are isometric. We prove that ${\mathcal A}$ is necessarily a Coxeter arrangement. As it is well known that the regions of a Coxeter arrangement are isometric, this characterizes three-dimensional Coxeter arrangements precisely as those arrangements with isometric regions. It is an open question whether this suffices to characterize Coxeter arrangements in higher dimensions. We also present the three families of affine arrangements in the plane which are not reflection arrangements, but in which all the regions are isometric.

Number of Partitions of an n-kilogram Stone into Minimum Number of Weights to Weigh All Integral Weights from 1 to n kg(s) on a Two-pan Balance
We find out the number of different partitions of an n-kilogram stone into the minimum number of parts so that all integral weights from 1 to n kilograms can be weighed in one weighing using the parts of any of the partitions on a two-pan balance. In comparison to the traditional partitions, these partitions have advantage where there is a constraint on total weight of a set and the number of parts in the partition. They may have uses in determining the optimal size and number of weights and denominations of notes and coins.

Barker sequences of odd length
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Barker sequence is a binary sequence for which all nontrivial aperiodic autocorrelations are at most 1 in magnitude. An old conjecture due to Turyn asserts that there is no Barker sequence of length greater than 13. In 1961, Turyn and Storer gave an elementary, though somewhat complicated, proof that this conjecture holds for odd lengths. We give a new and simpler proof of this result.

Local asymptotic Euler-Maclaurin expansion for Riemann sums over a semi-rational polyhedron
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider the Riemann sum of a smooth compactly supported function h(x) on a polyhedron in R^d, sampled at the points of the lattice Z^d/t. We give an asymptotic expansion when t goes to infinity, writing each coefficient of this expansion as a sum indexed by the faces f of the polyhedron, where the f-term is the integral over f of a differential operator applied to the function h(x). In particular, if a Euclidean scalar product is chosen, we prove that the differential operator for the face f can be chosen (in a unique way) to involve only normal derivatives to f. Our formulas are valid for a semi-rational polyhedron and a real sampling parameter t, if we allow for step-polynomial coefficients, instead of just constant ones.

Partial duality and closed 2-cell embeddings
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2009 Chmutov introduced the idea of partial duality for embeddings of graphs in surfaces. We discuss some alternative descriptions of partial duality, which demonstrate the symmetry between vertices and faces. One is in terms of band decompositions, and the other is in terms of the gem (graph-encoded map) representation of an embedding. We then use these to investigate when a partial dual is a closed 2-cell embedding, in which every face is bounded by a cycle in the graph. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a partial dual to be closed 2-cell, and also a sufficient condition for no partial dual to be closed 2-cell.

Irreducibility of configurations
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a paper from 1886, Martinetti enumerated small $v_3$-configurations. One of his tools was a construction that permits to produce a $(v+1)_3$-configuration from a $v_3$-configuration. He called configurations that were not constructible in this way irreducible configurations. According to his definition, the irreducible configurations are Pappus' configuration and four infinite families of configurations. In 2005, Boben defined a simpler and more general definition of irreducibility, for which only two $v_3$-configurations, the Fano plane and Pappus' configuration, remained irreducible. The present article gives a generalization of Boben's reduction for both balanced and unbalanced $(v_r,b_k)$-configurations, and proves several general results on augmentability and reducibility. Motivation for this work is found, for example, in the counting and enumeration of configurations.

Proper connection number and connected dominating sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
The proper connection number $pc(G)$ of a connected graph $G$ is defined as the minimum number of colors needed to color its edges, so that every pair of distinct vertices of $G$ is connected by at least one path in $G$ such that no two adjacent edges of the path are colored the same, and such a path is called a proper path. In this paper, we show that for every connected graph with diameter 2 and minimum degree at least 2, its proper connection number is 2. Then, we give an upper bound $\frac{3n}{δ+ 1}-1$ for every connected graph of order $n$ and minimum degree $δ$. We also show that for every connected graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $2$, the proper connection number $pc(G)$ is upper bounded by $pc(G[D])+2$, where $D$ is a connected two-way (two-step) dominating set of $G$. Bounds of the form $pc(G)\leq 4$ or $pc(G)=2$, for many special graph classes follow as easy corollaries from this result, which include connected interval graphs, asteroidal triple-free graphs, circular arc graphs, threshold graphs and chain graphs, all with minimum degree at least $2$. Furthermore, we get the sharp upper bound 3 for the proper connection numbers of interval graphs and circular arc graphs through analyzing their structures.

On structural properties of trees with minimal atom-bond connectivity index II
The {\em atom-bond connectivity (ABC) index} is a degree-based graph topological index that found chemical applications. The problem of complete characterization of trees with minimal $ABC$ index is still an open problem. In~\cite{d-sptmabci-2014}, it was shown that trees with minimal ABC index do not contain so-called {\em $B_k$-branches}, with $k \geq 5$, and that they do not have more than four $B_4$-branches. Our main results here reveal that the number of $B_1$ and $B_2$-branches are also bounded from above by small fixed constants. Namely, we show that trees with minimal ABC index do not contain more than four $B_1$-branches and more than eleven $B_2$-branches.

Three interactions of holes in two dimensional dimer systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider the unit triangular lattice in the plane with origin $O$, drawn so that one of the sets of lattice lines is vertical. Let $l$ and $l'$ denote respectively the vertical and horizontal lines that intersect $O$. Suppose the plane contains a pair of triangular holes of side length two, distributed symmetrically with respect to $l$ and $l'$, and oriented so that both holes point toward $O$. Unit rhombus tilings of three different regions of the plane are considered, namely: tilings of the entire plane; tilings of the half plane that lies to the left of $l$ (where $l$ is considered a free boundary, so unit rhombi are allowed to protrude half-way across it); and tilings of the half plane that lies just below the fixed boundary $l'$. Asymptotic expressions for the interactions of the triangular holes in these three different regions are obtained, providing further evidence for Ciucu's ongoing program that seeks to draw parallels between gaps in dimer systems on the hexagonal lattice and electrostatic phenomena.

The Real-rootedness of Eulerian Polynomials via the Hermite--Biehler Theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Based on the Hermite--Biehler theorem, we simultaneously prove the real-rootedness of Eulerian polynomials of type $D$ and the real-rootedness of affine Eulerian polynomials of type $B$, which were first obtained by Savage and Visontai by using the theory of $\mathbf{s}$-Eulerian polynomials. We also confirm Hyatt's conjectures on the interlacing property of half Eulerian polynomials. Borcea and Brändén's work on the characterization of linear operators preserving Hurwitz stability is critical to this approach.

A $q$-analogue of the Biperiodic Fibonacci Sequence
The Fibonacci sequence has been generalized in many ways. One of them is defined by the relation $t_n=at_{n-1}+t_{n-2}$ if $n$ is even, $t_n=bt_{n-1}+t_{n-2}$ if $n$ is odd, with initial values $t_0=0$ and $t_1=1$, where $a$ and $b$ are positive integers. This sequence is called biperiodic Fibonacci sequence. In this paper, we introduce a $q$-analogue of this sequence. We prove several identities of $q$-analogues of the Fibonacci sequence. We give algebraic and combinatorial proofs.

Domination polynomial of generalized friendship and generalized book graphs
Let G be a simple graph of order n. The domination polynomial of a graph is the generating function of its dominating sets. We study the domination polynomials of generalized friendship graphs. We also consider book graphs formed by joining n copies of the cycle graph of order 4 with a common edge and study the domination polynomials of some generalized book graphs. In particular we examine the domination roots of these families and find the limiting curve for the roots.

On separability problem for circulant S-rings
Published in Algebra and Analysis, 28, No. 1 (2016), 46-65 • View Publication • BIB
A Schur ring (S-ring) over a group $G$ is called separable if every of its similaritities is induced by isomorphism. We establish a criterion for an S-ring to be separable in the case when the group $G$ is cyclic. Using this criterion, we prove that any S-ring over a cyclic $p$-group is separable and that the class of separable circulant S-rings is closed with respect to duality.
