Enumeration of $2$-Polymatroids on up to Seven Elements
Published • View Publication • BIB
A theory of single-element extensions of integer polymatroids analogous to that of matroids is developed. We present an algorithm to generate a catalog of $2$-polymatroids, up to isomorphism. When we implemented this algorithm on a computer, obtaining all $2$-polymatroids on at most seven elements, we discovered the surprising fact that the number of $2$-polymatroids on seven elements fails to be unimodal in rank.

Finite field restriction estimates based on Kakeya maximal operator estimates
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the finite field setting, we show that the restriction conjecture associated to any one of a large family of $d=2n+1$ dimensional quadratic surfaces implies the $n+1$ dimensional Kakeya conjecture (Dvir's theorem). This includes the case of the paraboloid over finite fields in which $-1$ \emph{is} a square. We are able to partially reverse this implication using the sharp Kakeya maximal operator estimates of Ellenberg, Oberlin and Tao to establish the first finite field restriction estimates beyond the Stein-Tomas exponent in this setting.

Asymptotic enumeration of sparse connected 3-uniform hypergraphs
We derive an asymptotic formula for the number of connected 3-uniform hypergraphs with vertex set $[N]$ and $M$ edges for $M=N/2+R$ as long as $R$ satisfies $R = o(N)$ and $R=ω(N^{1/3}\ln^{2} N)$. This almost completely fills the gap in the range of $M$ for which the formula is known. We approach the problem using an `inside-out' approach of an earlier paper of Pittel and the second author, for connected graphs. A key part of the method uses structural components of connected hypergraphs called cores and kernels. These are structural components of connected hypergraphs. Our results also give information on the numbers of them with a given number of vertices and edges, and hence their typical size in random connected $3$-uniform hypergraphs with $N$ vertices and $M$ edges, for the range of $M$ we consider.

Relative locations of subwords in free operated semigroups and Motzkin words
Published in Frontier Math 10 (2015) 1243-1261 • View Publication • BIB
Bracketed words are basic structures both in mathematics (such as Rota-Baxter algebras) and mathematical physics (such as rooted trees) where the locations of the substructures are important. In this paper we give the classification of the relative locations of two bracketed subwords of a bracketed word in an operated semigroup into the separated, nested and intersecting cases. We achieve this by establishing a correspondence between relative locations of bracketed words and those of words by applying the concept of Motzkin words which are the algebraic forms of Motzkin paths.

Averaging algebras, Schröder numbers, rooted trees and operads
Published in Jour Algebraic Combinatorics, 42 (2015) 73-109 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study averaging operators from an algebraic and combinatorial point of view. We first construct free averaging algebras in terms of a class of bracketed words called averaging words. We next apply this construction to obtain one and two variable generating functions for subsets of averaging words when the averaging operator is taken to be idempotent. When the averaging algebra has an idempotent generator, the generating function in one variable is twice the generating function for large Schröder numbers, leading us to give interpretations of large Schröder numbers in terms of bracketed words and rooted trees, as well as a recursive formula for these numbers. We also give a representation of free averaging algebras by unreduced trees and apply it to give a combinatorial description of the operad of averaging algebras.
Bounding Embeddings of VC Classes into Maximum Classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
One of the earliest conjectures in computational learning theory-the Sample Compression conjecture-asserts that concept classes (equivalently set systems) admit compression schemes of size linear in their VC dimension. To-date this statement is known to be true for maximum classes---those that possess maximum cardinality for their VC dimension. The most promising approach to positively resolving the conjecture is by embedding general VC classes into maximum classes without super-linear increase to their VC dimensions, as such embeddings would extend the known compression schemes to all VC classes. We show that maximum classes can be characterised by a local-connectivity property of the graph obtained by viewing the class as a cubical complex. This geometric characterisation of maximum VC classes is applied to prove a negative embedding result which demonstrates VC-d classes that cannot be embedded in any maximum class of VC dimension lower than 2d. On the other hand, we show that every VC-d class C embeds in a VC-(d+D) maximum class where D is the deficiency of C, i.e., the difference between the cardinalities of a maximum VC-d class and of C. For VC-2 classes in binary n-cubes for 4 <= n <= 6, we give best possible results on embedding into maximum classes. For some special classes of Boolean functions, relationships with maximum classes are investigated. Finally we give a general recursive procedure for embedding VC-d classes into VC-(d+k) maximum classes for smallest k.

An Algebraic Study of Averaging Operators
A module endomorphism $f$ on an algebra $A$ is called an averaging operator if it satisfies $f(xf(y)) = f(x)f(y)$ for any $x, y\in A$. An algebra $A$ with an averaging operator $f$ is called an averaging algebra. Averaging operators have been studied for over one hundred years. We study averaging operators from an algebraic point of view. In the first part, we construct free averaging algebras on an algebra $A$ and on a set $X$, and free objects for some subcategories of averaging algebras. Then we study properties of these free objects and, as an application, we discuss some decision problems of averaging algebras. In the second part, we show how averaging operators induce Lie algebra structures. We discuss conditions under which a Lie bracket operation is induced by an averaging operator. Then we discuss properties of these induced Lie algebra structures. Finally we apply the results from this discussion in the study of averaging operators.

Applications of shuffle product to restricted decomposition formulas for multiple zeta values
Published in Jour. Number Theory, 144 (2014) 219-233 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we obtain a recursive formula for the shuffle product and apply it to derive two restricted decomposition formulas for multiple zeta values (MZVs). The first formula generalizes the decomposition formula of Euler and is similar to the restricted formula of Eie and Wei for MZVs with one strings of 1's. The second formula generalizes the previous results to the product of two MZVs with one and two strings of 1's respectively.

The Geometry of Homogeneous Two-Weight Codes
The results of [1,2] on linear homogeneous two-weight codes over finite Frobenius rings are exended in two ways: It is shown that certain non-projective two-weight codes give rise to strongly regular graphs in the way described in [1,2]. Secondly, these codes are used to define a dual two-weight code and strongly regular graph similar to the classical case of projective linear two-weight codes over finite fields [3].

Polynomials vanishing on grids: The Elekes-Rónyai problem revisited
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we characterize real bivariate polynomials which have a small range over large Cartesian products. We show that for every constant-degree bivariate real polynomial $f$, either $|f(A,B)|=Ω(n^{4/3})$, for every pair of finite sets $A,B\subset{\mathbb R}$, with $|A|=|B|=n$ (where the constant of proportionality depends on ${\rm deg} f$), or else $f$ must be of one of the special forms $f(u,v)=h(\varphi(u)+ψ(v))$, or $f(u,v)=h(\varphi(u)\cdotψ(v))$, for some univariate polynomials $\varphi,ψ,h$ over ${\mathbb R}$. This significantly improves a result of Elekes and Rónyai (2000). Our results are cast in a more general form, in which we give an upper bound for the number of zeros of $z=f(x,y)$ on a triple Cartesian product $A\times B\times C$, when the sizes $|A|$, $|B|$, $|C|$ need not be the same; the upper bound is $O(n^{11/6})$ when $|A|=|B|=|C|=n$, where the constant of proportionality depends on ${\rm deg} f$, unless $f$ has one of the aforementioned special forms. This result provides a unified tool for improving bounds in various Erd\H os-type problems in geometry and additive combinatorics. Several applications of our results to problems of these kinds are presented. For example, we show that the number of distinct distances between $n$ points lying on a constant-degree parametric algebraic curve which does not contain a line, in any dimension, is $Ω(n^{4/3})$, extending the result of Pach and de Zeeuw (2013) and improving the bound of Charalambides (2012), for the special case where the curve under consideration has a polynomial parameterization. We also derive improved lower bounds for several variants of the sum-product problem in additive combinatorics.

Cyclopermutohedron
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is known that the $k$-faces of the permutohedron $Π_n$ are labeled by (all possible) linearly ordered partitions of the set $[n]=\{1,...,n\}$ into $(n-k)$ non-empty parts. The incidence relation corresponds to the refinement: a face $F$ contains a face $F'$ whenever the label of $F'$ refines the label of $F$. In the paper we consider the cell complex ${CP}$ defined in analogous way, replacing linear ordering by cyclic ordering. Namely, $k$-cells of the complex ${CP}$ are labeled by (all possible) cyclically ordered partitions of the set $[n+1]=\{1,...,n, n+1\}$ into $(n+1-k)$ non-empty parts, where $(n+1-k)>2$. The incidence relation again corresponds to the refinement: a cell $F$ contains a cell $F'$ whenever the label of $F'$ refines the label of $F$. In particular, two vertices are joined by an edge whenever their labels differ on a permutation of two neighbor elements. The complex ${CP}$ cannot be represented by a convex polytope, since it is not a combinatorial sphere (not even a combinatorial manifold). However, it can be represented by some \textit{virtual polytope} (Minkowski difference of two convex polytopes) which we call "cyclopermutohedron" $\mathcal{CP}_{n+1}$. It is defined explicitly, as a weighted Minkowski sum of line segments. Informally, the cyclopermutohedron can be viewed as "permutohedron with diagonals". One of the motivations is that the cyclopermutohedron is a "universal" polytope for moduli spaces of polygonal linkages.

Systems of word equations, polynomials and linear algebra: A new approach
Published in European J. Combin. 47 (2015) 1-14 • View Publication • BIB
We develop a new tool, namely polynomial and linear algebraic methods, for studying systems of word equations. We illustrate its usefulness by giving essentially simpler proofs of several hard problems. At the same time we prove extensions of these results. Finally, we obtain the first nontrivial upper bounds for the fundamental problem of the maximal size of independent systems. These bounds depend quadratically on the size of the shortest equation. No methods of having such bounds have been known before.

More on Comparison Between First Geometric-Arithmetic Index and Atom-Bond Connectivity Index
Published in Miskolc Math. Notes 17(1), (2016) 561-570 • View Publication • BIB
The first geometric-arithmetic (GA) index and atom-bond connectivity (ABC) index are molecular structure descriptors which play a significant role in quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) and quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) studies. Das and Trinajstić [\textit{Chem. Phys. Lett.} \textbf{497} (2010) 149-151] showed that $GA$ index is greater than $ABC$ index for all those graphs (except $K_{1,4}$ and $T^{*}$, see Figure 1) in which the difference between maximum and minimum degree is less than or equal to 3. In this note, it is proved that $GA$ index is greater than $ABC$ index for line graphs of molecular graphs, for general graphs in which the difference between maximum and minimum degree is less than or equal to $(2δ-1)^{2}$ (where $δ$ is the minimum degree and $δ\geq2$) and for some families of trees. Thereby, a partial solution to an open problem proposed by Das and Trinajstić is given.
Modulus of families of walks on graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the notion of modulus of families of walks on graphs. We show how Beurling's famous criterion for extremality, that was formulated in the continuous case, can be interpreted on graphs as an instance of the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions. We then develop an algorithm to numerically compute modulus using Beurling's criterion as our guide.

Chinese Remainder Theorem for Cyclotomic Polynomials in $\mathbf{Z}[X]$
Published in J.Algebra 435 (2015) 223-262 • View Publication • BIB
By the Chinese remainder theorem, the canonical map \[Ψ_n: R[X]/(X^n-1)\to \oplus_{d|n} R[X]/Φ_d(X)\] is an isomorphism when $R$ is a field whose characteristic does not divide $n$ and $Φ_d$ is the $d$th cyclotomic polynomial. When $R$ is the ring $\mathbf{Z}$ of rational integers, this map is injective but not surjective. In this paper, we give an explicit formula for the elementary divisors of the cokernel of $Ψ_n$(when $R=\mathbb{Z}$) using the prime factorisation of $n$. We also give a pictorial algorithm using Young Tableaux that takes $O(n^{3+ε})$ bit operations for any $ε> 0$ to determine a basis of Smith vectors (see Definition 3.1) for the codomain of $Ψ_n$. In general when $R$ is an integral domain, we prove that the determinant of $Ψ: R[X]/(\prod_j f_j) \to \bigoplus_j R[X]/(f_j)$ written with respect to the standard basis is $\prod_{1 \leqslant i < j \leqslant n} \mathcal{R}(f_j, f_i)$, where $f_i$'s are pairwise relatively prime monic polynomials and $\mathcal{R}(f_j, f_i)$ is the resultant of $f_j$ and $f_i$.
Bounds on determinants of perturbed diagonal matrices
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 466 (2015), 21-26 • View Publication • BIB
We give upper and lower bounds on the determinant of a perturbation of the identity matrix or, more generally, a perturbation of a nonsingular diagonal matrix. The matrices considered are, in general, diagonally dominant. The lower bounds are best possible, and in several cases they are stronger than well-known bounds due to Ostrowski and other authors. If $A = I-E$ is an $n \times n$ matrix and the elements of $E$ are bounded in absolute value by $\varepsilon \le 1/n$, then a lower bound of Ostrowski (1938) is $\det(A) \ge 1-n\varepsilon$. We show that if, in addition, the diagonal elements of $E$ are zero, then a best-possible lower bound is \[\det(A) \ge (1-(n-1)\varepsilon)\,(1+\varepsilon)^{n-1}.\] Corresponding upper bounds are respectively \[\det(A) \le (1 + 2\varepsilon + n\varepsilon^2)^{n/2}\] and \[\det(A) \le (1 + (n-1)\varepsilon^2)^{n/2}.\] The first upper bound is stronger than Ostrowski's bound (for $\varepsilon < 1/n$) $\det(A) \le (1 - n\varepsilon)^{-1}$. The second upper bound generalises Hadamard's inequality, which is the case $\varepsilon = 1$. A necessary and sufficient condition for our upper bounds to be best possible for matrices of order $n$ and all positive $\varepsilon$ is the existence of a skew-Hadamard matrix of order $n$.

Spectral radius and signless Laplacian spectral radius of strongly connected digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let D be a strongly connected digraph and A(D) be the adjacency matrix of D. Let diag(D) be the diagonal matrix with outdegrees of the vertices of D and Q(D) = diag(D) + A(D) be the signless Laplacian matrix of D. The spectral radius of Q(D) is called the signless Laplacian spectral radius of D, denoted by q(D). In this paper, we give sharp bound on q(D) with outdegree sequence and compare the bound with some known bounds, establish some sharp upper or lower bound on q(D) with some given parameter such as clique number, girth or vertex connectivity, and characterize the corresponding extremal digraph or proposed open problem. In addition, we also determine the unique digraph which achieves the minimum (or maximum), the second minimum (or maximum), the third minimum, the fourth minimum spectral radius and signless Laplacian spectral radius among all strongly connected digraphs, and answer the open problem proposed by Lin-Shu [H.Q. Lin, J.L. Shu, A note on the spectral characterization of strongly connected bicyclic digraphs, Linear Algebra Appl. 436 (2012) 2524{2530].

Some Families of Identities for Integer Partition Function
We give a series of recursive identities for the number of partitions with exactly $k$ parts and with constraints on both the minimal difference among the parts and the minimal part. Using these results we demonstrate that the number of partitions of $n$ is equal to the number of partitions of $2n+d{n \choose 2}$ with $n$ $d$-distant parts. We also provide a direct proof for this identity. This work is the result of our aim at finding a bijective proof for Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
