Hypercontractivity in group von Neumann algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we provide a combinatorial/numerical method to establish new hypercontractivity estimates in group von Neumann algebras. We will illustrate our method with free groups, triangular groups and finite cyclic groups, for which we shall obtain optimal time hypercontractive $L_2 \to L_q$ inequalities with respect to the Markov process given by the word length and with $q$ an even integer. Interpolation and differentiation also yield general $L_p \to L_q$ hypercontrativity for $1 < p \le q < \infty$ via logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. Our method admits further applications to other discrete groups without small loops as far as the numerical part ---which varies from one group to another--- is implemented and tested in a computer. We also develop another combinatorial method which does not rely on computational estimates and provides (non-optimal) $L_p \to L_q$ hypercontractive inequalities for a larger class of groups/lengths, including any finitely generated group equipped with a conditionally negative word length, like infinite Coxeter groups. Our second method also yields hypercontractivity bounds for groups admitting a finite dimensional proper cocycle. Hypercontractivity fails for conditionally negative lengths in groups satisfying Kazhdan property (T).

Cardinality of $\ell_1$-Segments and Genocchi Numbers
We prove that the Genocchi numbers of first and second kind give the cardinality of certain segments in permutation spaces, with respect to the $\ell_1$-distance. Experimental data suggests that those segments have maximal cardinality among all segments in the corresponding spaces.

Improved Complexity Results on $k$-Coloring $P_t$-Free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is $H$-free if it does not contain an induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. We denote by $P_k$ and $C_k$ the path and the cycle on $k$ vertices, respectively. In this paper, we prove that 4-COLORING is NP-complete for $P_7$-free graphs, and that 5-COLORING is NP-complete for $P_6$-free graphs. These two results improve all previous results on $k$-coloring $P_t$-free graphs, and almost complete the classification of complexity of $k$-COLORING $P_t$-free graphs for $k\ge 4$ and $t\ge 1$, leaving as the only missing case 4-COLORING $P_6$-free graphs. We expect that 4-COLORING is polynomial time solvable for $P_6$-free graphs; in support of this, we describe a polynomial time algorithm for 4-COLORING $P_6$-free graphs which are also $P$-free, where $P$ is the graph obtained from $C_4$ by adding a new vertex and making it adjacent to exactly one vertex on the $C_4$.

Counting generalized Dyck paths
The Catalan number has a lot of interpretations and one of them is the number of Dyck paths. A Dyck path is a lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(n,n)$ which is below the diagonal line $y=x$. One way to generalize the definition of Dyck path is to change the end point of Dyck path, i.e. we define (generalized) Dyck path to be a lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(m,n) \in \mathbb{N}^2$ which is below the diagonal line $y=\frac{n}{m}x$, and denote by $C(m,n)$ the number of Dyck paths from $(0,0)$ to $(m,n)$. In this paper, we give a formula to calculate $C(m,n)$ for arbitrary $m$ and $n$.

Catalan satisfiability problem
Published in In proc. 11th. Latin American Theoretical INformatics Symposium (LATIN), volume 8392 of Lecture Notes in Computer Science, pp 466-477, 2014 • Search Publication
An and/or tree is usually a binary plane tree, with internal nodes labelled by logical connectives, and with leaves labelled by literals chosen in a fixed set of k variables and their negations. In the present paper, we introduce the first model of such Catalan trees, whose number of variables k_n is a function of n, the size of the expressions. We describe the whole range of the probability distributions depending on the function k_n, as soon as it tends jointly with n to infinity. As a by-product we obtain a study of the satisfiability problem in the context of Catalan trees. Our study is mainly based on analytic combinatorics and extends the Kozik's pattern theory, first developed for the fixed-k Catalan tree model.

Satisfiability and Canonisation of Timely Constraints
We abstractly formulate an analytic problem that arises naturally in the study of coordination in multi-agent systems. Let I be a set of arbitrary cardinality (the set of actions) and assume that for each pair of distinct actions (i,j), we are given a number δ(i,j). We say that a function t, specifying a time for each action, satisfies the timely constraint δ if for every pair of distinct actions (i,j), we have t(j)-t(i) <= δ(i,j) (and thus also t(j)-t(i) >= -δ(j,i)). While the approach that first comes to mind for analysing these definitions is an analytic/geometric one, it turns out that graph-theoretic tools yield powerful results when applied to these definitions. Using such tools, we characterise the set of satisfiable timely constraints, and reduce the problem of satisfiability of a timely constraint to the all-pairs shortest-path problem, and for finite I, furthermore to the negative-cycle detection problem. Moreover, we constructively show that every satisfiable timely constraint has a minimal satisfying function - a key milestone on the way to optimally solving a large class of coordination problems - and reduce the problem of finding this minimal satisfying function, as well as the problems of classifying and comparing timely constraints, to the all-pairs shortest-path problem. At the heart of our analysis lies the constructive definition of a "nicely-behaved" representative for each class of timely constraints sharing the same set of satisfying functions. We show that this canonical representative, as well as the map from such canonical representatives to the the sets of functions satisfying the classes of timely constraints they represent, has many desired properties, which provide deep insights into the structure underlying the above definitions.

Connected Components of Underlying Graphs of Halving Lines
In this paper we discuss the connected components of underlying graphs of halving lines' configurations. We show how to create a configuration whose underlying graph is the union of two given underlying graphs. We also prove that every connected component of the underlying graph is itself an underlying graph.

Counting Permutations Modulo Pattern-Replacement Equivalences for Three-Letter Patterns
Published in William Kuszmaul. Counting Permutations Modulo Pattern-Replacement Equivalences for Three-Letter Patterns. Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 20(4) (2013), \#P10 • View Publication • BIB
We study a family of equivalence relations on $S_n$, the group of permutations on $n$ letters, created in a manner similar to that of the Knuth relation and the forgotten relation. For our purposes, two permutations are in the same equivalence class if one can be reached from the other through a series of pattern-replacements using patterns whose order permutations are in the same part of a predetermined partition of $S_c$. When the partition is of $S_3$ and has one nontrivial part and that part is of size greater than two, we provide formulas for the number of classes created in each previously unsolved case. When the partition is of $S_3$ and has two nontrivial parts, each of size two (as do the Knuth and forgotten relations), we enumerate the classes for $13$ of the $14$ unresolved cases. In two of these cases, enumerations arise which are the same as those yielded by the Knuth and forgotten relations. The reasons for this phenomenon are still largely a mystery.

Equivalence Classes in $S_n$ for Three Families of Pattern-Replacement Relations
In particular, we are interested in the number of classes created in $S_n$ by each relation and in characterizing these classes. Imposing the condition that the partition of $S_c$ has one nontrivial part containing the cyclic shifts of a single permutation, we find enumerations for the number of nontrivial classes. When the permutation is the identity, we are able to compare the sizes of these classes and connect parts of the problem to Young tableaux and Catalan lattice paths. Imposing the condition that the partition has one nontrivial part containing all of the permutations in $S_c$ beginning with 1, we both enumerate and characterize the classes in $S_n$. We do the same for the partition that has two nontrivial parts, one containing all of the permutations in $S_c$ beginning with 1, and one containing all of the permutations in $S_c$ ending with 1.

Sidon Basis
Erdös conjectured the existence of an infinite Sidon sequence of positive integers which is also an asymptotic basis of order 3. We make progress towards this conjecture in several directions. First we prove the conjecture for all cyclic groups Z_N with N large enough. In second place we prove by probabilistic methods that there is an infinite B_2[2] sequence which is an asymptotic basis of order 3. Finally we prove that for all c>0 there is a Sidon sequence which is an asymptotic basis of order 3+c,that is to say, any positive sufficiently large integer n can be written as a sum of 4 elements of the sequence, one of them smaller than n^c.
Fair Sets of Some Class of Graphs
Given a non empty set $S$ of vertices of a graph, the partiality of a vertex with respect to $S$ is the difference between maximum and minimum of the distances of the vertex to the vertices of $S$. The vertices with minimum partiality constitute the fair center of the set. Any vertex set which is the fair center of some set of vertices is called a fair set. In this paper we prove that the induced subgraph of any fair set is connected in the case of trees and characterise block graphs as the class of chordal graphs for which the induced subgraph of all fair sets are connected. The fair sets of $K_{n}$, $K_{m,n}$, $K_{n}-e$, wheel graphs, odd cycles and symmetric even graphs are identified. The fair sets of the Cartesian product graphs are also discussed.

Obstacles for splitting multidimensional necklaces
Published in Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society 143 (2015), no. 11, 4655-4668 • View Publication • BIB
The well-known "necklace splitting theorem" of Alon asserts that every $k$-colored necklace can be fairly split into $q$ parts using at most $t$ cuts, provided $k(q-1)\leq t$. In a joint paper with Alon et al. we studied a kind of opposite question. Namely, for which values of $k$ and $t$ there is a measurable $k$-coloring of the real line such that no interval has a fair splitting into $2$ parts with at most $t$ cuts? We proved that $k>t+2$ is a sufficient condition (while $k>t$ is necessary). We generalize this result to Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimension $d$, and to arbitrary number of parts $q$. We prove that if $k(q-1)>t+d+q-1$, then there is a measurable $k$-coloring of $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that no axis-aligned cube has a fair $q$-splitting using at most $t$ axis-aligned hyperplane cuts. Our bound is of the same order as a necessary condition $k(q-1)>t$ implied by a theorem of Alon. Moreover for $d=1,q=2$ we get exactly the result of of Alon et al. Additionally, we prove that if a stronger inequality $k(q-1)>dt+d+q-1$ is satisfied, then there is a measurable $k$-coloring of $\mathbb{R}^d$ with no axis-aligned cube having a fair $q$-splitting using at most $t$ arbitrary hyperplane cuts. The proofs are based on the topological Baire category theorem and use algebraic independence over suitably chosen fields.

On The Number of Edge-3-Colourings of A Snipped Snark
For a given snark G and edge e of G, we can form a cubic graph G_e using an operation we call "edge subtraction". The number of 3-edge-colourings of G_e is 18 * ψ(G,e) for some nonnegative integer ψ(G,e). Given snarks G_1 and G_2, we can form a new snark G using techniques given by Isaacs and Kochol. In this note we give relationships between ψ(G_1,e_1), ψ(G_2,e_2), and ψ(G,e) for particular edges e_1, e_2, and e, in G_1, G_2, and G (respectively). As a consequence, if g,h,i,j,k,l are each a nonnegative integer, then there exists a cyclically 5-edge-connected snark G with an edge e such that ψ(G,e)=5^g * 7^h, and a cyclically 4-edge-connected snark G_0 with an edge e_0 such that ψ(G_0,e_0)=2^i * 3^j * 5^k * 7^l.

A cross-intersection theorem for vector spaces based on semidefinite programming
Published in Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 46 (2014) 342-348 • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathscr{F}$ and $\mathscr{G}$ be families of $k$- and $\ell$-dimensional subspaces, respectively, of a given $n$-dimensional vector space over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Suppose that $x \cap y \ne 0$ for all $x \in \mathscr{F}$ and $y \in \mathscr{G}$. By explicitly constructing optimal feasible solutions to a semidefinite programming problem which is akin to Lovász's theta function, we show that $|\mathscr{F}| |\mathscr{G}| \leq {n-1 \brack k-1} {n-1 \brack \ell-1}$, provided that $n \geq 2k$ and $n \geq 2\ell$. The characterization of the extremal families is also established.

On triangles in K_r-minor free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study graphs where each edge adjacent to a vertex of small degree (7 and 9, respectively) belongs to many triangles (4 and 5, respectively) and show that these graphs contain a complete graph (K_6 and K_7, respectively) as a minor. The second case settles a problem of Nevo (Nevo, 2007). Morevover if each edge of a graph belongs to 6 triangles then the graph contains a K_8-minor or contains K_{2,2,2,2,2} as an induced subgraph. We then show applications of these structural properties to stress freeness and coloration of graphs. In particular, motivated by Hadwiger's conjecture, we prove that every K_7-minor free graph is 8-colorable and every K_8-minor free graph is 10-colorable.

The niche graphs of interval orders
Published in Discussiones Mathematicae Graph Theory 34 (2014) 353-359 • View Publication • BIB
The niche graph of a digraph $D$ is the (simple undirected) graph which has the same vertex set as $D$ and has an edge between two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ if and only if $N^+_D(x) \cap N^+_D(y) \neq \emptyset$ or $N^-_D(x) \cap N^-_D(y) \neq \emptyset$, where $N^+_D(x)$ (resp. $N^-_D(x)$) is the set of out-neighbors (resp. in-neighbors) of $x$ in $D$. A digraph $D=(V,A)$ is called a semiorder (or a unit interval order) if there exist a real-valued function $f:V \to \mathbb{R}$ on the set $V$ and a positive real number $δ\in \mathbb{R}$ such that $(x,y) \in A$ if and only if $f(x) > f(y) + δ$. A digraph $D=(V,A)$ is called an interval order if there exists an assignment $J$ of a closed real interval $J(x) \subset \mathbb{R}$ to each vertex $x \in V$ such that $(x,y) \in A$ if and only if $\min J(x) > \max J(y)$. S. -R. Kim and F. S. Roberts characterized the competition graphs of semiorders and interval orders in 2002, and Y. Sano characterized the competition-common enemy graphs of semiorders and interval orders in 2010. In this note, we give characterizations of the niche graphs of semiorders and interval orders.

Intrinsicness of the Newton polygon for smooth curves on $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve in $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ of genus $g\neq 4$, and assume that it is birationally equivalent to a curve defined by a Laurent polynomial that is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polygon $Δ$. Then we show that the convex hull $Δ^{(1)}$ of the interior lattice points of $Δ$ is a standard rectangle, up to a unimodular transformation. Our main auxiliary result, which we believe to be interesting in its own right, is that the first scrollar Betti numbers of $Δ$-non-degenerate curves are encoded in the combinatorics of $Δ^{(1)}$, if $Δ$ satisfies some mild conditions.

Small-Bias Sets for Nonabelian Groups: Derandomizing the Alon-Roichman Theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
In analogy with epsilon-biased sets over Z_2^n, we construct explicit epsilon-biased sets over nonabelian finite groups G. That is, we find sets S subset G such that | Exp_{x in S} rho(x)| <= epsilon for any nontrivial irreducible representation rho. Equivalently, such sets make G's Cayley graph an expander with eigenvalue |lambda| <= epsilon. The Alon-Roichman theorem shows that random sets of size O(log |G| / epsilon^2) suffice. For groups of the form G = G_1 x ... x G_n, our construction has size poly(max_i |G_i|, n, epsilon^{-1}), and we show that a set S \subset G^n considered by Meka and Zuckerman that fools read-once branching programs over G is also epsilon-biased in this sense. For solvable groups whose abelian quotients have constant exponent, we obtain epsilon-biased sets of size (log |G|)^{1+o(1)} poly(epsilon^{-1}). Our techniques include derandomized squaring (in both the matrix product and tensor product senses) and a Chernoff-like bound on the expected norm of the product of independently random operators that may be of independent interest.

Unimodality via Kronecker products
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present new proofs and generalizations of unimodality of the q-binomial coefficients \binom{n}{k}_q as polynomials in q. We use an algebraic approach by interpreting the differences between numbers of certain partitions as Kronecker coefficients of representations of S_n. Other applications of this approach include strict unimodality of the diagonal q-binomial coefficients and unimodality of certain partition statistics.
