New skew Laplacian energy of a simple digraph
For a simple digraph $G$ of order $n$ with vertex set $\{v_1,v_2,\ldots, v_n\}$, let $d_i^+$ and $d_i^-$ denote the out-degree and in-degree of a vertex $v_i$ in $G$, respectively. Let $D^+(G)=diag(d_1^+,d_2^+,\ldots,d_n^+)$ and $D^-(G)=diag(d_1^-,d_2^-,\ldots,d_n^-)$. In this paper we introduce $\widetilde{SL}(G)=\widetilde{D}(G)-S(G)$ to be a new kind of skew Laplacian matrix of $G$, where $\widetilde{D}(G)=D^+(G)-D^-(G)$ and $S(G)$ is the skew-adjacency matrix of $G$, and from which we define the skew Laplacian energy $SLE(G)$ of $G$ as the sum of the norms of all the eigenvalues of $\widetilde{SL}(G)$. Some lower and upper bounds of the new skew Laplacian energy are derived and the digraphs attaining these bounds are also determined.

Planar Ramsey Numbers of Four Cycles Versus Wheels
For two given graphs $G$ and $H$ the planar Ramsey number $PR(G,H)$ is the smallest integer $n$ such that every planar graph $F$ on $n$ vertices either contains a copy of $G$, or its complement contains a copy of $H$. In this paper, we first characterize some structural properties of $C_4$-free planar graphs, and then we determine all planar Ramsey numbers $PR(C_4, W_n)$, for $n\ge 3$.

Intertwining connectivities in representable matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $M$ be a representable matroid, and $Q, R, S, T$ subsets of the ground set. We prove that, if $M$ is sufficiently large, then there is an element $e$ such that deleting or contracting $e$ preserves both the $Q$-$R$ and the $S$-$T$ connectivities. For matroids representable over a finite field we prove a stronger result: we show that we can remove $e$ such that both a connectivity and a minor of $M$ are preserved.

A Note on Hadwiger's Conjecture
Hadwiger's Conjecture states that every $K_{t+1}$-minor-free graph is $t$-colourable. It is widely considered to be one of the most important conjectures in graph theory. If every $K_{t+1}$-minor-free graph has minimum degree at most $δ$, then every $K_{t+1}$-minor-free graph is $(δ+1)$-colourable by a minimum-degree-greedy algorithm. The purpose of this note is to prove a slightly better upper bound.

The probability measure corresponding to 2-plane trees
Published in Probability and Mathematical Statistics, vol. 33, Fasc. 2 (2013), pp. 255-264, (10 pages) • Search Publication
We study the probability measure $μ_{0}$ for which the moment sequence is $\binom{3n}{n}\frac{1}{n+1}$. We prove that $μ_{0}$ is absolutely continuous, find the density function and prove that $μ_{0}$ is infinitely divisible with respect to the additive free convolution.

Intersecting integer partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
If $a_1, a_2, ..., a_k$ and $n$ are positive integers such that $n = a_1 + a_2 + ... + a_k$, then the sum $a_1 + a_2 + ... + a_k$ is said to be a \emph{partition of $n$} of \emph{length $k$}, and $a_1, a_2, ..., a_k$ are said to be the \emph{parts} of the partition. Two partitions that differ only in the order of their parts are considered to be the same. We say that two partitions \emph{intersect} if they have at least one common part. We call a set $A$ of partitions \emph{intersecting} if any two partitions in $A$ intersect. Let $P_{n,k}$ be the set of all partitions of $n$ of length $k$. We conjecture that if $2 \leq k \leq n$, then the size of any intersecting subset of $P_{n,k}$ is at most the size of $P_{n-1,k-1}$, which is the size of the intersecting subset of $P_{n,k}$ consisting of those partitions which have 1 as a part. The conjecture is trivially true for $n \leq 2k$, and we prove it for $n \geq 5k^5$. We also generalise this for subsets of $P_{n,k}$ with the property that any two of their members have at least $t$ common parts.

Random colorings and automorphism breaking in locally finite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A colouring of a graph G is called distinguishing if its stabiliser in Aut G is trivial. It has been conjectured that, if every automorphism of a locally finite graph moves infinitely many vertices, then there is a distinguishing 2-colouring. We study properties of random 2-colourings of locally finite graphs and show that the stabiliser of such a colouring is almost surely nowhere dense in Aut G and a null set with respect to the Haar measure on the automorphism group. We also investigate random 2-colourings in several classes of locally finite graphs where the existence of a distinguishing 2-colouring has already been established. It turns out that in all of these cases a random 2-colouring is almost surely distinguishing.

On $γ$-vectors and the derivatives of the tangent and secant functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we consider the gamma-vectors of the types A and B Coxeter complexes as well as the gamma-vectors of the types A and B associahedrons. We show that these gamma-vectors can be obtained by using derivative polynomials of the tangent and secant functions. A grammatical description for these gamma-vectors is discussed. Moreover, we also present a grammatical description for the well known Legendre polynomials and Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds.

MCMC sampling colourings and independent sets of G(n,d/n) near the uniqueness threshold
Published • View Publication • BIB
Sampling from Gibbs distribution is a central problem in computer science as well as in statistical physics. In this work we focus on the k-colouring model} and the hard-core model with fugacity λwhen the underlying graph is an instance of Erdos-Renyi random graph G(n,p), where p=d/n and d is fixed. We use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method for sampling from the aforementioned distributions. In particular, we consider Glauber (block) dynamics. We show a dramatic improvement on the bounds for rapid mixing in terms of the number of colours and the fugacity for the corresponding models. For both models the bounds we get are only within small constant factors from the conjectured ones by the statistical physicists. We use Path Coupling to show rapid mixing. For k and λin the range of our interest the technical challenge is to cope with the high degree vertices, i.e. vertices of degree much larger than the expected degree d. The usual approach to this problem is to consider block updates rather than single vertex updates for the Markov chain. Taking appropriately defined blocks the effect of high degree vertices somehow diminishes. However, devising such a construction of blocks is a highly non trivial task. We develop for a first time a weighting schema for the paths of the underlying graph. Vertices which belong to "light" paths, only, can be placed at the boundaries of the blocks. Then the tree-like local structure of G(n,d/n) allows the construction of simple structured blocks.
Two-dimensional crystal melting and D4-D2-D0 on toric Calabi-Yau singularities
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct a two-dimensional crystal melting model which reproduces the BPS index of D2-D0 states bound to a non-compact D4-brane on an arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau singularity. The crystalline structure depends on the toric divisor wrapped by the D4-brane. The molten crystals are in one-to-one correspondence with the torus fixed points of the moduli space of the quiver gauge theory on D-branes. The F- and D-term constraints of the gauge theory are regarded as a generalization of the ADHM constraints on instantons. We also show in several examples that our model is consistent with the wall-crossing formula for the BPS index.
A Combinatorial Approach to Quantum Error Correcting Codes
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Algorithms and Applications, vol. 6, 1450054 (2014) • View Publication • BIB
Motivated from the theory of quantum error correcting codes, we investigate a combinatorial problem that involves a symmetric $n$-vertices colourable graph and a group of operations (colouring rules) on the graph: find the minimum sequence of operations that maps between two given graph colourings. We provide an explicit algorithm for computing the solution of our problem, which in turn is directly related to computing the distance (performance) of an underlying quantum error correcting code. Computing the distance of a quantum code is a highly non-trivial problem and our method may be of use in the construction of better codes.
The Prouhet-Tarry-Escott Problem and Generalized Thue-Morse Sequences
Published in Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 7 (2016), Number 1, pp. 117-133 • View Publication • BIB
We present new methods of generating Prouhet-Tarry-Escott partitions of arbitrarily large regularity. One of these methods generalizes the construction of the Thue-Morse sequence to finite alphabets with more than two letters. We show how one can use such partitions to (theoretically) pour the same volume coffee from an urn into a finite number of cups so that each cup gets almost the same amount of caffeine.

Further hardness results on the generalized connectivity of graphs
The generalized $k$-connectivity $κ_k(G)$ of a graph $G$ was introduced by Chartrand et al. in 1984, which is a nice generalization of the classical connectivity. Recently, as a natural counterpart, Li et al. proposed the concept of generalized edge-connectivity for a graph. In this paper, we determine the computational complexity of the generalized connectivity and generalized edge-connectivity of a graph. Two conjectures are also proved to be true.

The Goldman-Rota identity and the Grassmann scheme
Published • View Publication • BIB
We inductively construct an explicit (common) orthogonal eigenbasis for the elements of the Bose-Mesner algebra of the Grassmann scheme. The main step is a constructive, linear algebraic interpretation of the Goldman-Rota recurrence for the number of subspaces of a finite vector space. This interpretation shows that the up operator on subspaces has an explicitly given recursive structure. Using this we inductively construct an explicit orthogonal symmetric Jordan basis with respect to the up operator and write down the singular values, i.e., the ratio of the lengths of the successive vectors in the Jordan chains. The collection of all vectors in this basis of a fixed rank forms a (common) orthogonal eigenbasis for the elements of the Bose-Mesner algebra of the Grassmann scheme. We also pose a bijective proof problem on the spanning trees of the Grassmann graphs.

On total colorings of 1-planar graphs

A graph is 1-planar if it can be drawn on the plane so that each edge is crossed by at most one other edge. In this paper, we confirm the total-coloring conjecture for 1-planar graphs with maximum degree at least 13.

List total coloring of pseudo-outerplanar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is pseudo-outerplanar if each of its blocks has an embedding in the plane so that the vertices lie on a fixed circle and the edges lie inside the disk of this circle with each of them crossing at most one another. It is proved that every pseudo-outerplanar graph with maximum degree Δ\geq 5 is totally (Δ+1)-choosable.

On Quasiperiodic Morphisms
Published in 9th International Conference, WORDS 2013, Turku : Finlande (2013) • View Publication • BIB
Weakly and strongly quasiperiodic morphisms are tools introduced to study quasiperiodic words. Formally they map respectively at least one or any non-quasiperiodic word to a quasiperiodic word. Considering them both on finite and infinite words, we get four families of morphisms between which we study relations. We provide algorithms to decide whether a morphism is strongly quasiperiodic on finite words or on infinite words.

Analytic Combinatorics of Planar Lattice Paths
Lattice paths effectively model phenomena in chemistry, physics and probability theory. Asymptotic enumeration of lattice paths is linked with entropy in the physical systems being modeled. Lattice paths restricted to different regions of the plane are well suited to a functional equation approach for exact and asymptotic enumeration. This thesis surveys results on lattice paths under various restrictions, with an emphasis on lattice paths in the quarter plane. For these paths, we develop an original systematic combinatorial approach providing direct access to the exponential growth factors of the asymptotic expressions.
