Littlewood investigated polynomials with coefficients in $\{-1,1\}$ (Littlewood polynomials), to see how small their ratio of norms $||f||_4/||f||_2$ on the unit circle can become as $deg(f)\to\infty$. A small limit is equivalent to slow growth in the mean square autocorrelation of the associated binary sequences of coefficients of the polynomials. The autocorrelation problem for arrays and higher dimensional objects has also been studied; it is the natural generalization to multivariable polynomials. Here we find, for each $n > 1$, a family of $n$-variable Littlewood polynomials with lower asymptotic $||f||_4/||f||_2$ than any known hitherto. We discover these through a wide survey, infeasible with previous methods, of polynomials whose coefficients come from finite field characters. This is the first time that the lowest known asymptotic ratio of norms $||f||_4/||f||_2$ for multivariable polynomials $f(z_1,...,z_n)$ is strictly less than what could be obtained by using products $f_1(z_1)... f_n(z_n)$ of the best known univariate polynomials.

The classical result of Landau on the existence of kings in finite tournaments (=finite directed complete graphs) is extended to continuous tournaments for which the set X of players is a compact Hausdorff space. The following partial converse is proved as well. Let X be a Tychonoff space which is either zero-dimensional or locally connected or pseudocompact or linearly ordered. If X admits at least one continuous tournament and each continuous tournament on X has a king, then X must be compact. We show that a complete reversal of our theorem is impossible, by giving an example of a dense connected subspace Y of the unit square admitting precisely two continuous tournaments both of which have a king, yet Y is not even analytic (much less compact).

The identification of binary sequences with large merit factor (small mean-squared aperiodic autocorrelation) is an old problem of complex analysis and combinatorial optimization, with practical importance in digital communications engineering and condensed matter physics. We establish the asymptotic merit factor of several families of binary sequences and thereby prove various conjectures, explain numerical evidence presented by other authors, and bring together within a single framework results previously appearing in scattered form. We exhibit, for the first time, families of skew-symmetric sequences whose asymptotic merit factor is as large as the best known value (an algebraic number greater than 6.34) for all binary sequences; this is interesting in light of Golay's conjecture that the subclass of skew-symmetric sequences has asymptotically optimal merit factor. Our methods combine Fourier analysis, estimation of character sums, and estimation of the number of lattice points in polyhedra.
Expanders graphs and sieving in combinatorial structures

We prove a general large sieve statement in the context of random walks on subgraphs of a given graph. This can be seen as a generalization of previously known results where one performs a random walk on a group enjoying a strong spectral gap property. In such a context the point is to exhibit a strong uniform expansion property for a suitable family of Cayley graphs on quotients. In our combinatorial approach, this is replaced by a result of Alon--Roichman about expanding properties of random Cayley graphs. Applying the general setting we show e.g., that with high probability (in a strong explicit sense) random coloured subsets of integers contain monochromatic (non-empty) subsets summing to zero, or that a random coloring of the edges of a complete graph contains a monochromatic triangle.
On some binomial coefficients related to the evaluation of tan(nx)
The purpose of this paper is to study some binomial coefficients which are related to the evaluation of tan(nx). We present a connection between these binomial coefficients and the coefficients of a family of derivative polynomials for tangent and secant.
On an error in the star puzzle by Henry E. Dudeney
We found a solution of the star puzzle (a path on a chessboard from c5 to d4 in 14 straight strokes) in 14 queen moves, which has been claimed by the author as impossible.

We model the generation of words with independent unequal probabilities of occurrence of letters. We prove that the probability $p(r)$ of occurrence of words of rank $r$ has a power asymptotics. As distinct from the paper published earlier by B. Conrad and M. Mitzenmacher, we give a brief proof by elementary methods and obtain an explicit formula for the exponent of the power law.
A quasi-tree expansion of the Krushkal polynomial

We introduce a generalization of the Krushkal polynomial to nonorientable surfaces, and prove that this polynomial has a natural quasi-tree expansion. This generalized Krushkal polynomial contains the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial of a (possibly nonorientable) ribbon graph as a specialization. The quasi-tree expansion proven here then extends the recent quasi-tree expansions of the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial deduced in the oriented case by A. Champanerkar et al. and in the more general unoriented case by E. Dewey and F. Vignes-Tourneret. The generalized Krushkal polynomial also contains the Las Vergnas polynomial of a cellulation of a surface as a specialization; we use this fact to deduce a quasi-tree expansion for the Las Vergnas polynomial.

We prove two conjectures of Brändén on the real-rootedness of polynomials $Q_n(x)$ and $R_n(x)$ which are related to the Boros-Moll polynomials $P_n(x)$. In fact, we show that both $Q_n(x)$ and $R_n(x)$ form Sturm sequences. The first conjecture implies the 2-log-concavity of $P_n(x)$, and the second conjecture implies the 3-log-concavity of $P_n(x)$.
Uniquely dimensional graphs
A set $W\subseteq V(G)$ is called a resolving set, if for each two distinct vertices $u,v\in V(G)$ there exists $w\in W$ such that $d(u,w)\neq d(v,w)$, where $d(x,y)$ is the distance between the vertices $x$ and $y$. A resolving set for $G$ with minimum cardinality is called a metric basis.
A graph with a unique metric basis is called a uniquely dimensional graph.
In this paper, we study some properties of uniquely dimensional graphs.
Signed and Minus Domination in Complete Multipartite Graphs
In this paper we determine the exact values of the signed domination number, signed total domination number, and minus domination number of complete multipartite graphs, which substantially generalizes some previous results obtained for special subclasses of complete multipartite graphs such as cliques and complete bipartite graphs.
Absolutely symmetric trees and complexity of natural number
We consider the rooted trees which not have isomorphic representation and introduce a conception of complexity a natural number also. The connection between quantity such trees with $n$ edges and a complexity of natural number $n$ is established. The recurrent ratio for complexity of a natural number is founded. An expression for calculation of difference complexities of two adjacent natural numbers is constructed. It is proved that this difference equal 1 if and only if a natural number is simple. From proved theorems it follows corollaries.
Amenability, locally finite spaces, and bi-lipschitz embeddings

We define the isoperimetric constant for any locally finite metric space and we study the property of having isoperimetric constant equal to zero. This property, called Small Neighborhood property, clearly extends amenability to any locally finite space. Therefore, we start making a comparison between this property and other notions of amenability for locally finite metric spaces that have been proposed by Gromov, Lafontaine and Pansu, by Ceccherini-Silberstein, Grigorchuk and de la Harpe and by Block and Weinberger. We discuss possible applications of the property SN in the study of embedding a metric space into another one. In particular, we propose three results: we prove that a certain class of metric graphs that are isometrically embeddable into Hilbert spaces must have the property SN. We also show, by a simple example, that this result is not true replacing property SN with amenability. As a second result, we prove that \emph{many} spaces with \emph{uniform bounded geometry} having a bi-lipschitz embedding into Euclidean spaces must have the property SN. Finally, we prove a Bourgain-like theorem for metric trees: a metric tree with uniform bounded geometry and without property SN does not have bi-lipschitz embeddings into finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces.

Several hook summation formulae for binary trees have appeared recently in the literature. In this paper we present an analogous formula for unordered increasing trees of size r, which involves r parameters. The right-hand side can be written nicely as a product of linear factors. We study two specializations of this new formula, including Cayley's enumeration of trees with respect to vertex degree. We give three proofs of the hook formula. One of these proofs arises somewhat indirectly, from representation theory of the symmetric groups, and in particular uses Kerov's character polynomials. The other proofs are more direct, and of independent interest.

We consider the embedding method of the superconformal group in four dimensions in the case of extended supersymmetry, hence generalizing the recent work of Goldberger, Skiba and Son which was restricted at N=1. Moreover, we work out explicitly the case of N=2 chiral superfields in four dimensions, putting the component fields in correspondence with Pascal's pyramid at layer N. This correspondence is a generic property of the N-extended chiral sector.

We introduce tropically unirational varieties, which are subvarieties of tori that admit dominant rational maps whose tropicalisation is surjective. The central (and unresolved) question is whether all unirational varieties are tropically unirational. We present several techniques for proving tropical unirationality, along with various examples.

We prove that self-avoiding walk on Z^d is sub-ballistic in any dimension d at least two. That is, writing ||u|| for the Euclidean norm of u \in Z^d, and SAW_n for the uniform measure on self-avoiding walks gamma:{0,...,n} \to Z^d for which gamma_0 = 0, we show that, for each v > 0, there exists c > 0 such that, for each positive integer n, SAW_n (max {|| gamma_k || : k \in {0,...,n}} > v n) < e^{- c n}.

We are interested in classifying those sets of primes $\mathcal{P}$ such that when we sieve out the integers up to $x$ by the primes in $\mathcal{P}^c$ we are left with roughly the expected number of unsieved integers. In particular, we obtain the first general results for sieving an interval of length $x$ with primes including some in $(\sqrt{x},x]$, using methods motivated by additive combinatorics.
An efficient implementation of the algorithm computing the Borel-fixed points of a Hilbert scheme

Borel-fixed ideals play a key role in the study of Hilbert schemes. Indeed each component and each intersection of components of a Hilbert scheme contains at least one Borel-fixed point, i.e. a point corresponding to a subscheme defined by a Borel-fixed ideal. Moreover Borel-fixed ideals have good combinatorial properties, which make them very interesting in an algorithmic perspective. In this paper, we propose an implementation of the algorithm computing all the saturated Borel-fixed ideals with number of variables and Hilbert polynomial assigned, introduced from a theoretical point of view in the paper "Segment ideals and Hilbert schemes of points", Discrete Mathematics 311 (2011).
