Automorphisms of circulants that respect partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we begin by partitioning the edges (or arcs) of a circulant (di)graph according to which generator in the connection set leads to each edge. We then further refine the partition by subdividing any part that corresponds to an element of order less than $n$, according to which of the cycles generated by that element the edge is in. It is known that if the (di)graph is connected and has no multiple edges, then any automorphism that respects the first partition and fixes the vertex corresponding to the group identity must be an automorphism of the group (this is in fact true in the more general context of Cayley graphs). We show that automorphisms that respect the second partition and fix 0 must also respect the first partition, so are again precisely the group automorphisms of $\mathbb Z_n$.

On two classes of nearly binary matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give an excluded-minor characterization for the class of matroids M in which M\e or M/e is binary for all e in E(M). This class is closely related to the class of matroids in which every member is binary or can be obtained from a binary matroid by relaxing a circuit-hyperplane. We also provide an excluded-minor characterization for the second class.

Revolutionaries and spies on random graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Pursuit-evasion games, such as the game of Revolutionaries and Spies, are a simplified model for network security. In the game we consider in this paper, a team of $r$ revolutionaries tries to hold an unguarded meeting consisting of $m$ revolutionaries. A team of $s$ spies wants to prevent this forever. For given $r$ and $m$, the minimum number of spies required to win on a graph $G$ is the spy number $σ(G,r,m)$. We present asymptotic results for the game played on random graphs $G(n,p)$ for a large range of $p = p(n), r=r(n)$, and $m=m(n)$. The behaviour of the spy number is analyzed completely for dense graphs (that is, graphs with average degree at least $n^{1/2+\eps}$ for some $\eps > 0$). For sparser graphs, some bounds are provided.

Quadrant marked mesh patterns in alternating permutations
This paper is continuation of the systematic study of distribution of quadrant marked mesh patterns. We study quadrant marked mesh patterns on up-down and down-up permutations, also known as alternating and reverse alternating permutations, respectively. In particular, we refine classic enumeration results of André on alternating permutations by showing that the distribution of the quadrant marked mesh pattern of interest is given by $(\sec(xt))^{1/x}$ on up-down permutations of even length and by $\int_0^t (\sec(xz))^{1+\frac{1}{x}}dz$ on down-up permutations of odd length.

Lexicographic Shellability of Partial Involutions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this manuscript we study inclusion posets of Borel orbit closures on (symmetric) matrices. In particular, we show that the Bruhat poset of partial involutions is a lexicographiically shellable poset. Also, studying the embeddings of symmetric groups and involutions into rooks and partial involutions, respectively, we find new $EL$-labelings on permutations as well as on involutions.

On incompactness for chromatic number of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We deal with incompactness. Assume the existence of non-reflecting stationary set of cofinality kappa . We prove that one can define a graph G whose chromatic number is > kappa, while the chromatic number of every subgraph G' subseteq G,|G'| < |G| is <= kappa . The main case is kappa = aleph_0.

Odd-order Cayley graphs with commutator subgroup of order pq are hamiltonian
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that if G is a nontrivial, finite group of odd order, whose commutator subgroup [G,G] is cyclic of order p^m q^n, where p and q are prime, then every connected Cayley graph on G has a hamiltonian cycle.

The p-Domination Number of Complete Multipartite Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph and $p$ a positive integer. A subset $S\subseteq V$ is called a $p$-dominating set of $G$ if every vertex not in $S$ has at least $p$ neighbors in $S$. The $p$-domination number is the minimum cardinality of a $p$-dominating set in $G$. In this paper, we establish an exact formula of the $p$-domination number of all complete multipartite graphs for arbitrary positive integer $p$.

Areas of triangles and Beck's theorem in planes over finite fields
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is shown that any subset $E$ of a plane over a finite field $\F_q$, of cardinality $|E|>q$ determines not less than $\frac{q-1}{2}$ distinct areas of triangles, moreover once can find such triangles sharing a common base. It is also shown that if $|E|\geq 64q\log_2 q$, then there are more than $\frac{q}{2}$ distinct areas of triangles sharing a common vertex. The result follows from a finite field version of the Beck theorem for large subsets of $\F_q^2$ that we prove. If $|E|\geq 64q\log_2 q$, there exists a point $z\in E$, such that there are at least $\frac{q}{4}$ straight lines incident to $z$, each supporting the number of points of $E$ other than $z$ in the interval between $\frac{|E|}{2q}$ and $\frac{2|E|}{q}.$ This is proved by combining combinatorial and Fourier analytic techniques. We also discuss higher-dimensional implications of these results in light of recent developments.

On the parameter $μ_{21}$ of a complete bipartite graph
A proper edge $t$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a coloring of edges of $G$ with colors $1,2,...,t$ such that all colors are used, and no two adjacent edges receive the same color. The set of colors of edges incident with a vertex $x$ is called a spectrum of $x$. An arbitrary nonempty subset of consecutive integers is called an interval. Suppose that all edges of a graph $G$ are colored in the game of Alice and Bob with asymmetric distribution of roles. Alice determines the number $t$ of colors in the future proper edge coloring of $G$ and aspires to minimize the number of vertices with an interval spectrum in it. Bob colors edges of $G$ with $t$ colors and aspires to maximize that number. $μ_{21}(G)$ is equal to the number of vertices of $G$ with an interval spectrum at the finish of the game on the supposition that both players choose their best strategies. In this paper, for arbitrary positive integers $m$ and $n$, the exact value of the parameter $μ_{21}(K_{m,n})$ is found.

A proper edge $t$-coloring of a graph is a coloring of its edges with colors $1,2,...,t$ such that all colors are used, and no two adjacent edges receive the same color. For any integer $n\geq 3$, all possible values of $t$ are found, for which there exists such a proper edge $t$-coloring of the simple cycle C(n), which uses for each pair of adjacent edges either consecutive colors or the first and the last ones.

On one-sided interval edge colorings of biregular bipartite graphs
A proper edge $t$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a coloring of edges of $G$ with colors $1,2,...,t$ such that all colors are used, and no two adjacent edges receive the same color. The set of colors of edges incident with a vertex $x$ is called a spectrum of $x$. An arbitrary nonempty subset of consecutive integers is called an interval. We say that a proper edge $t$-coloring of a graph $G$ is interval in the vertex $x$ if the spectrum of $x$ is an interval. We say that a proper edge $t$-coloring $\varphi$ of a graph $G$ is interval on a subset $R_0$ of vertices of $G$, if for an arbitrary $x\in R_0$, $\varphi$ is interval in $x$. We say that a subset $R$ of vertices of $G$ has an $i$-property if there is a proper edge $t$-coloring of $G$ which is interval on $R$. If $G$ is a graph, and a subset $R$ of its vertices has an $i$-property, then the minimum value of $t$ for which there is a proper edge $t$-coloring of $G$ interval on $R$ is denoted by $w_R(G)$. In this paper, for some bipartite graphs, we estimate the value of this parameter in that cases when $R$ coincides with the set of all vertices of one part of the graph.

Estimates for the number of vertices with an interval spectrum in proper edge colorings of some graphs
A proper edge $t$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a coloring of edges of $G$ with colors $1,2,...,t$ such that each of $t$ colors is used, and adjacent edges are colored differently. The set of colors of edges incident with a vertex $x$ of $G$ is called a spectrum of $x$. A proper edge $t$-coloring of a graph $G$ is interval for its vertex $x$ if the spectrum of $x$ is an interval of integers. A proper edge $t$-coloring of a graph $G$ is persistent-interval for its vertex $x$ if the spectrum of $x$ is an interval of integers beginning from the color 1. For graphs $G$ from some classes of graphs, we obtain estimates for the possible number of vertices for which a proper edge $t$-coloring of $G$ can be interval or persistent-interval.

A short proof of the odd-girth theorem
Published in Electron J. Combin. 19 (3) (2012) P12 • View Publication • BIB
Recently, it has been shown that a connected graph $Γ$ with $d+1$ distinct eigenvalues and odd-girth $2d+1$ is distance-regular. The proof of this result was based on the spectral excess theorem. In this note we present an alternative and more direct proof which does not rely on the spectral excess theorem, but on a known characterization of distance-regular graphs in terms of the predistance polynomial of degree $d$.

On cyclically-interval edge colorings of trees
For an undirected, simple, finite, connected graph $G$, we denote by $V(G)$ and $E(G)$ the sets of its vertices and edges, respectively. A function $\varphi:E(G)\rightarrow\{1,2,\ldots,t\}$ is called a proper edge $t$-coloring of a graph $G$ if adjacent edges are colored differently and each of $t$ colors is used. An arbitrary nonempty subset of consecutive integers is called an interval. If $\varphi$ is a proper edge $t$-coloring of a graph $G$ and $x\in V(G)$, then $S_G(x,\varphi)$ denotes the set of colors of edges of $G$ which are incident with $x$. A proper edge $t$-coloring $\varphi$ of a graph $G$ is called a cyclically-interval $t$-coloring if for any $x\in V(G)$ at least one of the following two conditions holds: a) $S_G(x,\varphi)$ is an interval, b) $\{1,2,\ldots,t\}\setminus S_G(x,\varphi)$ is an interval. For any $t\in \mathbb{N}$, let $\mathfrak{M}_t$ be the set of graphs for which there exists a cyclically-interval $t$-coloring, and let $$\mathfrak{M}\equiv\bigcup_{t\geq1}\mathfrak{M}_t.$$ For an arbitrary tree $G$, it is proved that $G\in\mathfrak{M}$ and all possible values of $t$ are found for which $G\in\mathfrak{M}_t.$

Littlewood Polynomials with Small $L^4$ Norm
Littlewood asked how small the ratio $||f||_4/||f||_2$ (where $||.||_α$ denotes the $L^α$ norm on the unit circle) can be for polynomials $f$ having all coefficients in $\{1,-1\}$, as the degree tends to infinity. Since 1988, the least known asymptotic value of this ratio has been $\sqrt[4]{7/6}$, which was conjectured to be minimum. We disprove this conjecture by showing that there is a sequence of such polynomials, derived from the Fekete polynomials, for which the limit of this ratio is less than $\sqrt[4]{22/19}$.
An Entropic Proof of Chang's Inequality

The number of multinomial coefficients based on a set of partitions of n into k parts and divided by k evenly
In this paper we obtained an original integer sequence based on the properties of the multinomial coefficient. We investigated a property of the sequence that shows connection with a primality testing. For any prime n the n-th term in the sequence is less by 1 than the number of partitions of n. We hypothesize the existence of an asymptotic algorithm of primality testing.

Voronoi tilings hidden in crystals - The case of maximal abelian coverings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider a finite connected graph possibly with multiple edges and loops. In discrete geometric analysis, Kotani and Sunada constructed the crystal associated to the graph as a standard realization of the maximal abelian covering of the graph. As an application of what the author showed in an earlier paper with Seshadri as a by-product of Geometric Invariant Theory, he shows that the Voronoi tiling (also known as the Wigner-Seitz tiling) is hidden in the crystal, that is, the crystal does not intrude the interiors of the top-dimensional Voronoi cells. The result turns out to be closely related to the tropical Abel-Jacobi map of the associated compact tropical curve.
