Let $k_r(n,δ)$ be the minimum number of $r$-cliques in graphs with $n$ vertices and minimum degree $δ$. We evaluate $k_r(n,δ)$ for $δ\leq 4n/5$ and some other cases. Moreover, we give a construction, which we conjecture to give all extremal graphs (subject to certain conditions on $n$, $δ$ and $r$).

Using the approach suggested in [arXiv:1002.2761] we present below a sufficient condition guaranteeing that two collections of patterns of permutations have the same exponential generating functions for the number of permutations avoiding elements of these collections as consecutive patterns. In short, the coincidence of the latter generating functions is guaranteed by a length-preserving bijection of patterns in these collections which is identical on the overlappings of pairs of patterns where the overlappings are considered as unordered sets. Our proof is based on a direct algorithm for the computation of the inverse generating functions. As an application we present a large class of patterns where this algorithm is fast and, in particular, allows to obtain a linear ordinary differential equation with polynomial coefficients satisfied by the inverse generating function.

We study the set of all pseudoline arrangements with contact points which cover a given support. We define a natural notion of flip between these arrangements and study the graph of these flips. In particular, we provide an enumeration algorithm for arrangements with a given support, based on the properties of certain greedy pseudoline arrangements and on their connection with sorting networks. Both the running time per arrangement and the working space of our algorithm are polynomial.
As the motivation for this work, we provide in this paper a new interpretation of both pseudotriangulations and multitriangulations in terms of pseudoline arrangements on specific supports. This interpretation explains their common properties and leads to a natural definition of multipseudotriangulations, which generalizes both. We study elementary properties of multipseudotriangulations and compare them to iterations of pseudotriangulations.

Let (t_n) be the classical Thue-Morse sequence defined by t_n = s_2(n) (mod 2), where s_2 is the sum of the bits in the binary representation of n. It is well known that for any integer k>=1 the frequency of the letter "1" in the subsequence t_0, t_k, t_{2k}, ... is asymptotically 1/2. Here we prove that for any k there is a n<=k+4 such that t_{kn}=1. Moreover, we show that n can be chosen to have Hamming weight <=3. This is best in a twofold sense. First, there are infinitely many k such that t_{kn}=1 implies that n has Hamming weight >=3. Second, we characterize all k where the minimal n equals k, k+1, k+2, k+3, or k+4. Finally, we present some results and conjectures for the generalized problem, where s_2 is replaced by s_b for an arbitrary base b>=2.
Generators of the Hecke algebra of $(S_{2n},B_n)$
A set of ring generators for the Hecke algebra of the Gel'fand pair $(S_{2n},B_n)$, where $B_n$ is the hyperoctahedral subgroup of the symmetric group $S_{2n}$ is presented. Various corollaries are given. A conjecture of Sho Matsumoto is proven.

Let $H_n^{(2)}$ denote the second-order harmonic number $\sum_{0<k\le n}1/k^2$ for $n=0,1,2,\ldots$. In this paper we obtain the following identity: $$\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{2^kH_{k-1}^{(2)}}{k\binom{2k}k}=\frac{π^3}{48}.$$ We explain how we found the series and develop related congruences involving Bernoulli or Euler numbers; for example, it is shown that $$\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k}{2^k}H_k^{(2)}\equiv-E_{p-3}\pmod{p}$$ for any prime $p>3$, where $E_0,E_1,E_2,\ldots$ are Euler numbers. Motivated by the Amdeberhan-Zeilberger identity $\sum_{k=1}^\infty(21k-8)/(k^3\binom{2k}k^3)=π^2/6$, we also establish the congruence $$\sum_{k=1}^{(p-1)/2}\frac{21k-8}{k^3\binom{2k}k^3}\equiv(-1)^{(p+1)/2}4E_{p-3}\pmod p$$ for each prime $p>3$.
Considering Adelman's Shortest Permutation Strings
In this report, we consider Adelman's algorithm for generating shortest permutation strings. We introduce a new representation approach which reveals some properties of Adelman's algorithm.
Relative Node Polynomials for Plane Curves

We generalize the recent work of S. Fomin and G. Mikhalkin on polynomial formulas for Severi degrees.
The degree of the Severi variety of plane curves of degree d and delta nodes is given by a polynomial in d, provided delta is fixed and d is large enough. We extend this result to generalized Severi varieties parametrizing plane curves which, in addition, satisfy tangency conditions of given orders with respect to a given line. We show that the degrees of these varieties, appropriately rescaled, are given by a combinatorially defined "relative node polynomial" in the tangency orders, provided the latter are large enough. We describe a method to compute these polynomials for arbitrary delta, and use it to present explicit formulas for delta <= 6. We also give a threshold for polynomiality, and compute the first few leading terms for any delta.

In this paper, we provide a new characterization of uniformly recurrent words with finite defect based on a relation between the palindromic and factor complexity. Furthermore, we introduce a class of morphisms P_ret closed under composition and we show that a uniformly recurrent word with finite defect is an image of a rich (also called full) word under a morphism of class P_ret. This class is closely related to the well-known class P defined by Hof, Knill, and Simon; every morphism from P_ret is conjugate to a morphism of class P.

Denote by r(n) the length of a shortest integer sequence on a circle containing all permutations of the set {1,2,...,n} as subsequences. Hansraj Gupta conjectured in 1981 that r(n) <= n^2/2. In this paper we confirm the conjecture for the case where n is even, and show that r(n) < n^2/2 + n/4 -1 if n is odd.

D. Krieger and J. Shallit have proved that every real number greater than 1 is a critical exponent of some sequence. We show how this result can be derived from some general statements about sequences whose subsequences have (almost) maximal Kolmogorov complexity. In this way one can also construct a sequence that has no "approximate" fractional powers with exponent that exceeds a given value.
Arithmetic Properties of Overpartition Pairs

Bringmann and Lovejoy introduced a rank for overpartition pairs and investigated its role in congruence properties of $\bar{pp}(n)$, the number of overpartition pairs of n. In particular, they applied the theory of Klein forms to show that there exist many Ramanujan-type congruences for the number $\bar{pp}(n)$. In this paper, we shall derive two Ramanujan-type identities and some explicit congruences for $\bar{pp}(n)$. Moreover, we find three ranks as combinatorial interpretations of the fact that $\bar{pp}(n)$ is divisible by three for any n. We also construct infinite families of congruences for $\bar{pp}(n)$ modulo 3, 5, and 9.

Develin and Sturmfels showed that regular triangulations of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$ can be thought as tropical polytopes. Tropical oriented matroids were defined by Ardila and Develin, and were conjectured to be in bijection with all subdivisions of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$. In this paper, we show that any triangulation of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$ encodes a tropical oriented matroid. We also suggest a new class of combinatorial objects that may describe all subdivisions of a bigger class of polytopes.

In this article, we study the moonshine vertex operator algebra starting with the tensor product of three copies of the vertex operator algebra $V_{\sqrt2E_8}^+$, and describe it by the quadratic space over $\F_2$ associated to $V_{\sqrt2E_8}^+$. Using quadratic spaces and orthogonal groups, we show the transitivity of the automorphism group of the moonshine vertex operator algebra on the set of all full vertex operator subalgebras isomorphic to the tensor product of three copies of $V_{\sqrt2E_8}^+$, and determine the stabilizer of such a vertex operator subalgebra. Our approach is a vertex operator algebra analogue of "An $E_8$-approach to the Leech lattice and the Conway group" by Lepowsky and Meurman. Moreover, we find new analogies among the moonshine vertex operator algebra, the Leech lattice and the extended binary Golay code.

We show that the set of balanced binary trees is closed by interval in the Tamari lattice. We establish that the intervals [T0, T1] where T0 and T1 are balanced trees are isomorphic as posets to a hypercube. We introduce tree patterns and synchronous grammars to get a functional equation of the generating series enumerating balanced tree intervals.
Rotor walks on general trees

The rotor walk on a graph is a deterministic analogue of random walk. Each vertex is equipped with a rotor, which routes the walker to the neighbouring vertices in a fixed cyclic order on successive visits. We consider rotor walk on an infinite rooted tree, restarted from the root after each escape to infinity. We prove that the limiting proportion of escapes to infinity equals the escape probability for random walk, provided only finitely many rotors send the walker initially towards the root. For i.i.d. random initial rotor directions on a regular tree, the limiting proportion of escapes is either zero or the random walk escape probability, and undergoes a discontinuous phase transition between the two as the distribution is varied. In the critical case there are no escapes, but the walker's maximum distance from the root grows doubly exponentially with the number of visits to the root. We also prove that there exist trees of bounded degree for which the proportion of escapes eventually exceeds the escape probability by arbitrarily large o(1) functions. No larger discrepancy is possible, while for regular trees the discrepancy is at most logarithmic.
3D Polyominoes inscribed in a rectangular prism
We introduce a family of 3D combinatorial objects that we define as minimal 3D polyominoes inscribed in a rectanglar prism. These objects are connected sets of unitary cubic cells inscribed in a given rectangular prism and of minimal volume under this condition. They extend the concept of 2D polyominoes inscribed in a rectangle defined in a previous work. Using their geometric structure and elementary combinatorial arguments, we construct generating functions of minimal 3D polyominoes in the form of rational functions. We also obtain a number of exact formulas and recurrences for sub-families of these polyominoes.

In this short note we construct a simple cut-and-join operator representation for Kontsevich-Witten tau-function that is the partition function of the two-dimensional topological gravity. Our derivation is based on the Virasoro constraints. Possible applications of the obtained expression are discussed.
Inner tableau translation property of the weak order and related results
Let $SYT_{n}$ be the set of all standard Young tableaux with $n$ cells and $\leq_{weak}$ be Melnikov's the weak order on $SYT_n$. The aim of this paper is to introduce a conjecture, called the {\it property of inner tableau translation} and discuss its significance in the studies of the weak order. We will prove the conjecture for some specific cases
Bounding reflection length in an affine Coxeter group

In any Coxeter group, the conjugates of elements in the standard minimal generating set are called reflections and the minimal number of reflections needed to factor a particular element is called its reflection length. In this article we prove that the reflection length function on an affine Coxeter group has a uniform upper bound. More precisely we prove that the reflection length function on an affine Coxeter group that naturally acts faithfully and cocompactly on $\R^n$ is bounded above by $2n$ and we also show that this bound is optimal. Conjecturally, spherical and affine Coxeter groups are the only Coxeter groups with a uniform bound on reflection length.
