A Cost-Minimizing Algorithm for School Choice
The school choice problem concerns the design and implementation of matching mechanisms that produce school assignments for students within a given public school district. In this note we define a simple student-optimal criterion that is not met by any previously employed mechanism in the school choice literature. We then use this criterion to adapt a well-known combinatorial optimization technique (Hungarian algorithm) to the school choice problem.

We study the PBW filtration on the highest weight representations $V(\la)$ of $\msp_{2n}$. This filtration is induced by the standard degree filtration on $U(\n^-)$. We give a description of the associated graded $S(\n^-)$-module $gr V(\la)$ in terms of generators and relations. We also construct a basis of $gr V(\la)$. As an application we derive a graded combinatorial formula for the character of $V(\la)$ and obtain a new class of bases of the modules $V(\la)$.

Non-commutativity is ubiquitous in mathematical modeling of reality and in many cases same algebraic structures are implemented in different situations. Here we consider the canonical commutation relation of quantum theory and discuss a simple urn model of the latter. It is shown that enumeration of urn histories provides a faithful realization of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra. Drawing on this analogy we demonstrate how the operator normal forms facilitate counting of histories via generating functions, which in turn yields an intuitive combinatorial picture of the ordering procedure itself.

A directed dominating set in a directed graph $D$ is a set $S$ of vertices of $V$ such that every vertex $u \in V(D) \setminus S$ has an adjacent vertex $v$ in $S$ with $v$ directed to $u$. The directed domination number of $D$, denoted by $γ(D)$, is the minimum cardinality of a directed dominating set in $D$. The directed domination number of a graph $G$, denoted $Γ_d(G)$, which is the maximum directed domination number $γ(D)$ over all orientations $D$ of $G$. The directed domination number of a complete graph was first studied by Erdös [Math. Gaz. 47 (1963), 220--222], albeit in disguised form. We extend this notion to directed domination of all graphs. If $α$ denotes the independence number of a graph $G$, we show that if $G$ is a bipartite graph, we show that $Γ_d(G) = α$. We present several lower and upper bounds on the directed domination number.

In this paper we prove three conjectures on congruences involving central binomial coefficients or Lucas sequences. Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $a$ be a positive integer. We show that if $p\equiv 1\pmod{4}$ or $a>1$ then $$ \sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor\frac34p^a\rfloor}\binom{-1/2}k\equiv\left(\frac{2}{p^a}\right)\pmod{p^2}, $$ where $(-)$ denotes the Jacobi symbol. This confirms a conjecture of the second author. We also confirm a conjecture of R. Tauraso by showing that $$\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\frac{L_k}{k^2}\equiv0\pmod{p}\quad {\rm provided}\ \ p>5,$$ where the Lucas numbers $L_0,L_1,L_2,\ldots$ are defined by $L_0=2,\ L_1=1$ and $L_{n+1}=L_n+L_{n-1}\ (n=1,2,3,\ldots)$. Our third theorem states that if $p\not=5$ then we can determine $F_{p^a-(\frac{p^a}5)}$ mod $p^3$ in the following way: $$\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}(-1)^k\binom{2k}k\equiv\left(\frac{p^a}5\right)\left(1-2F_{p^a-(\frac{p^a}5)}\right)\ \pmod{p^3},$$ which appeared as a conjecture in a paper of Sun and Tauraso in 2010.

We determine an asymptotic formula for the number of labelled 2-connected (simple) graphs on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, provided that $m-n\to\infty$ and $m=O(n\log n)$ as $n\to\infty$. This is the entire range of $m$ not covered by previous results. The proof involves determining properties of the core and kernel of random graphs with minimum degree at least 2. The case of 2-edge-connectedness is treated similarly. We also obtain formulae for the number of 2-connected graphs with given degree sequence for most (`typical') sequences. Our main result solves a problem of Wright from 1983.
Structure of Hochschild cohomology of path algebras and differential formulation of Euler's polyhedron formula

This article studies the Lie algebra $Diff(KΓ)$ of derivations on the path algebra $KΓ$ of a quiver $Γ$ and the Lie algebra on the first Hochschild cohomology group $H^1(KΓ)$. We relate these Lie algebras to the algebraic and combinatorial properties of the path algebra. Characterizations of derivations on a path algebra are obtained, leading to a canonical basis of $Diff(KΓ)$ and its Lie algebra properties. Special derivations are associated to the vertices, arrows and faces of a quiver, and the concepts of a connected matrix and boundary matrix are introduced to study the relations among these derivations, concluding that the space of edge derivations is the direct sum of the spaces of the vertex derivations and the face derivations, while the dimensions of the latter spaces are the largest possible. By taking dimensions, this relation among spaces of derivations recovers Euler's polyhedron formula. This relation also leads a combinatorial construction of a canonical basis of the Lie algebra $H^1(KΓ)$, together with a semidirect sum decomposition of $H^1(KΓ)$.

The recurrence properties of random walks can be characterized by Pólya number, i.e., the probability that the walker has returned to the origin at least once. In this paper, we consider recurrence properties for a general 1D random walk on a line, in which at each time step the walker can move to the left or right with probabilities $l$ and $r$, or remain at the same position with probability $o$ ($l+r+o=1$). We calculate Pólya number $P$ of this model and find a simple expression for $P$ as, $P=1-Δ$, where $Δ$ is the absolute difference of $l$ and $r$ ($Δ=|l-r|$). We prove this rigorous expression by the method of creative telescoping, and our result suggests that the walk is recurrent if and only if the left-moving probability $l$ equals to the right-moving probability $r$.

We study dismantlability in graphs. In order to compare this notion to similar operations in posets (partially ordered sets) or in simplicial complexes, we prove that a graph G dismants on a subgraph H if and only if H is a strong deformation retract of G. Then, by looking at a triangle relating graphs, posets and simplicial complexes, we get a precise correspondence of the various notions of dismantlability in each framework. As an application, we study the link between the graph of morphisms from a graph G to a graph H and the polyhedral complex Hom(G,H); this gives a more precise statement about well known results concerning the polyhedral complex Hom(G,H) and its relation with foldings in G or H.

Improving a result of Károlyi, Pach and Tóth, we construct an arrangement of $n$ segments in the plane with at most $n^{\log{8} / \log{169}}$ pairwise crossing or pairwise disjoint segments. We use the recursive method based on flattenable arrangements which was established by Larman, Matoušek, Pach and Törőcsik. We also show that not every arrangement can be flattened, by constructing an intersection graph of segments which cannot be realized by an arrangement of segments crossing a common line. Moreover, we also construct an intersection graph of segments crossing a common line which cannot be realized by a flattenable arrangement.

We show that if a $d$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay complex is, in a certain sense, sufficiently "close" to being balanced, then there is a $d$-dimensional balanced Cohen-Macaulay complex having the same $f$-vector. This in turn provides some partial evidence for a conjecture of Kalai on the $f$-vectors of Cohen-Macaulay flag complexes.
Moment-angle complexes and polyhedral products for convex polytopes

Let P be a convex polytope not simple in general. In the focus of this paper lies a simplicial complex K_P which carries complete information about the combinatorial type of P. In the case when P is simple, K_P is the same as dP*, where P* is a polar dual polytope. Using the canonical embedding of a polytope P into nonnegative orthant, we introduce a moment-angle space Z_P for a polytope P. It is known, that in the case when P is simple the space Z_P is homeomorphic to the polyhedral product (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. When P is not simple, we prove that the space Z_P is homotopically equivalent to the space (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. This allows to introduce bigraded Betti numbers for any convex polytope. A Stanley-Reisner ring of a polytope P can be defined as a Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex K_P. All these considerations lead to a natural question: which simplicial complexes arise as K_P for some polytope P? We have proceeded in this direction by introducing a notion of a polytopic simplicial complex. It has the following property: link of each simplex in a polytopic complex is either contractible, or retractible to a subcomplex, homeomorphic to a sphere. The complex K_P is a polytopic simplicial complex for any polytope P. Links of so called face simplices in a polytopic complex are polytopic complexes as well. This fact is sufficient enough to connect face polynomial of a simplicial complex K_P to the face polynomial of a polytope P, giving a series of inequalities on certain combinatorial characteristics of P. Two of these inequalities are equalities for each P and represent Euler-Poincare formula and one of Bayer-Billera relations for flag f-numbers. In the case when P is simple all inequalities turn out to be classical Dehn-Sommerville relations.

The slope variety of a graph is an algebraic set whose points correspond to drawings of a graph. A complement-reducible graph (or cograph) is a graph without an induced four-vertex path. We construct a bijection between the zeroes of the slope variety of the complete graph on $n$ vertices over $\mathbb{F}_2$, and the complement-reducible graphs on $n$ vertices.
Pattern Recognition on Oriented Matroids: K*-Vectors and Reorientations
The components of K*-vectors associated to a simple oriented matroid M are the numbers of general or special tope committees for M. Using the principle of inclusion-exclusion, we determine how the reorientations of M on one-element subsets of its ground set affect K*-vectors.

We study the number of the vectors determined by two sets in d-dimensional vector spaces over finite fields. We observe that the lower bound of cardinality for the set of vectors can be given in view of an additive energy or the decay of the Fourier transform on given sets. As an application of our observation, we find sufficient conditions on sets where the Falconer distance conjecture for finite fields holds in two dimension. Moreover, we give an alternative proof of the theorem, due to Iosevich and Rudnev, that any Salem set satisfies the Falconer distance conjecture for finite fields.

For every d-dimensional polytope P with centrally symmetric facets we can associate a "subway map" such that every line of this "subway" corresponds to set of facets parallel to one of ridges P. The belt diameter of P is the maximal number of line changes that you need to do in order to get from one station to another.
In this paper we prove that belt diameter of d-dimensional space-filling zonotope is not greater than $\lceil \log_2\frac45d\rceil$. Moreover we show that this bound can not be improved in dimensions d at most 6.
Saturation Probabilities of Continuous-Time Sigmoidal Networks
From genetic regulatory networks to nervous systems, the interactions between elements in biological networks often take a sigmoidal or S-shaped form. This paper develops a probabilistic characterization of the parameter space of continuous-time sigmoidal networks (CTSNs), a simple but dynamically-universal model of such interactions. We describe an efficient and accurate method for calculating the probability of observing effectively M-dimensional dynamics in an N-element CTSN, as well as a closed-form but approximate method. We then study the dependence of this probability on N, M, and the parameter ranges over which sampling occurs. This analysis provides insight into the overall structure of CTSN parameter space.
