We show that (n,2^n) additive codes over GF(4) can be represented as directed graphs. This generalizes earlier results on self-dual additive codes over GF(4), which correspond to undirected graphs. Graph representation reduces the complexity of code classification, and enables us to classify additive (n,2^n) codes over GF(4) of length up to 7. From this we also derive classifications of isodual and formally self-dual codes. We introduce new constructions of circulant and bordered circulant directed graph codes, and show that these codes will always be isodual. A computer search of all such codes of length up to 26 reveals that these constructions produce many codes of high minimum distance. In particular, we find new near-extremal formally self-dual codes of length 11 and 13, and isodual codes of length 24, 25, and 26 with better minimum distance than the best known self-dual codes.

We review some aspects of recurrence in topological dynamics and focus on two open problems. The first is an old one concerning the relation between Poincare and Birkhoff recurrence; the second, due to Boshernitzan, is about moving recurrence. We provide a partial answer to a topological version of the moving recurrence problem.
The Mobius Function of the Permutation Pattern Poset
A permutation τcontains another permutation σas a pattern if τhas a subsequence whose elements are in the same order with respect to size as the elements in σ. This defines a partial order on the set of all permutations, and gives a graded poset P. We give a large class of pairs of permutations whose intervals in P have Mobius function 0. Also, we give a solution to the problem when σoccurs precisely once in τ, and σand τsatisfy certain further conditions, in which case the Mobius function is shown to be either -1, 0 or 1. We conjecture that for intervals [σ,τ] consisting of permutations avoiding the pattern 132, the magnitude of the Mobius function is bounded by the number of occurrences of σin τ. We also conjecture that the Mobius function of the interval [1,τ] is -1, 0 or 1.

In this note, we investigate some properties of local Kneser graphs defined in [8]. In this regard, as a generalization of the Erd${\rm \ddot{o}}$s-Ko-Rado theorem, we characterize the maximum independent sets of local Kneser graphs. Next, we present an upper bound for their chromatic number.

An $k$-noncrossing RNA structure can be identified with an $k$-noncrossing diagram over $[n]$, which in turn corresponds to a vacillating tableaux having at most $(k-1)$ rows. In this paper we derive the limit distribution of irreducible substructures via studying their corresponding vacillating tableaux. Our main result proves, that the limit distribution of the numbers of irreducible substructures in $k$-noncrossing, $σ$-canonical RNA structures is determined by the density function of a $Γ(-\lnτ_k,2)$-distribution for some $τ_k<1$.

In this paper we study irreducibility in RNA structures. By RNA structure we mean RNA secondary as well as RNA pseudoknot structures. In our analysis we shall contrast random and minimum free energy (mfe) configurations. We compute various distributions: of the numbers of irreducible substructures, their locations and sizes, parameterized in terms of the maximal number of mutually crossing arcs, $k-1$, and the minimal size of stacks $σ$. In particular, we analyze the size of the largest irreducible substructure for random and mfe structures, which is the key factor for the folding time of mfe configurations.

Let $A$ and $B$ be finite subsets of $\mathbb{C}$ such that $|B|=C|A|$. We show the following variant of the sum product phenomenon: If $|AB|<α|A|$ and $α\ll \log |A|$, then $|kA+lB|\gg |A|^k|B|^l$. This is an application of a result of Evertse, Schlickewei, and Schmidt on linear equations with variables taking values in multiplicative groups of finite rank, in combination with an earlier theorem of Ruzsa about sumsets in $\mathbb{R}^d$. As an application of the case $A=B$ we give a lower bound on $|A^+|+|A^\times|$, where $A^+$ is the set of sums of distinct elements of $A$ and $A^\times$ is the set of products of distinct elements of $A$.

Boxicity of Leaf Powers

The boxicity of a graph G, denoted as box(G) is defined as the minimum integer t such that G is an intersection graph of axis-parallel t-dimensional boxes. A graph G is a k-leaf power if there exists a tree T such that the leaves of the tree correspond to the vertices of G and two vertices in G are adjacent if and only if their corresponding leaves in T are at a distance of at most k. Leaf powers are a subclass of strongly chordal graphs and are used in the construction of phylogenetic trees in evolutionary biology. We show that for a k-leaf power G, box(G)\leq k-1. We also show the tightness of this bound by constructing a k-leaf power with boxicity equal to k-1. This result implies that there exists strongly chordal graphs with arbitrarily high boxicity which is somewhat counterintuitive.

Let F be a uniformly distributed random k-SAT formula with n variables and m clauses. We present a polynomial time algorithm that finds a satisfying assignment of F with high probability for constraint densities m/n<(1-eps_k)2^k\ln(k)/k, where eps_k->0. Previously no efficient algorithm was known to find solutions with non-vanishing probability beyond m/n=1.817.2^k/k [Frieze and Suen, J. of Algorithms 1996].
Major Index for 01-Fillings of Moon Polyominoes

We propose a major index statistic on 01-fillings of moon polyominoes which, when specialized to certain shapes, reduces to the major index for permutations and set partitions. We consider the set F(M, s; A) of all 01-fillings of a moon polyomino M with given column sum s whose empty rows are A, and prove that this major index has the same distribution as the number of north-east chains, which are the natural extension of inversions (resp. crossings) for permutations (resp. set partitions). Hence our result generalizes the classical equidistribution results for the permutation statistics inv and maj. Two proofs are presented. The first is an algebraic one using generating functions, and the second is a bijection on 01-fillings of moon polyominoes in the spirit of Foata's second fundamental transformation on words and permutations.
Large Deviations and Moments for the Euler Characteristic of a Random Surface

We study random surfaces constructed by glueing together $N/k$ filled $k$-gons along their edges, with all $(N-1)!! = (N-1)(N-3)...3\cdot 1$ pairings of the edges being equally likely. (We assume that lcm $\{2,k\}$ divides $N$.) The Euler characteristic of the resulting surface is related to the number of cycles in a certain random permutation of $\{1, ..., N\}$. Gamburd has shown that when 2 lcm $\{2,k\}$ divides $N$, the distribution of this random permutation converges to that of the uniform distribution on the alternating group $A_N$ in the total-variation distance as $N\to\infty$. We obtain large-deviations bounds for the number of cycles that, together with Gamburd's result, allow us to derive sharp estimates for the moments of the number of cycles. These estimates allow us to confirm certain cases of conjectures made by Pippenger and Schleich.
Characterisations and Examples of Graph Classes with Bounded Expansion

Classes with bounded expansion, which generalise classes that exclude a topological minor, have recently been introduced by Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez. These classes are defined by the fact that the maximum average degree of a shallow minor of a graph in the class is bounded by a function of the depth of the shallow minor. Several linear-time algorithms are known for bounded expansion classes (such as subgraph isomorphism testing), and they allow restricted homomorphism dualities, amongst other desirable properties. In this paper we establish two new characterisations of bounded expansion classes, one in terms of so-called topological parameters, the other in terms of controlling dense parts. The latter characterisation is then used to show that the notion of bounded expansion is compatible with Erdös-Rényi model of random graphs with constant average degree. In particular, we prove that for every fixed $d>0$, there exists a class with bounded expansion, such that a random graph of order $n$ and edge probability $d/n$ asymptotically almost surely belongs to the class. We then present several new examples of classes with bounded expansion that do not exclude some topological minor, and appear naturally in the context of graph drawing or graph colouring. In particular, we prove that the following classes have bounded expansion: graphs that can be drawn in the plane with a bounded number of crossings per edge, graphs with bounded stack number, graphs with bounded queue number, and graphs with bounded non-repetitive chromatic number. We also prove that graphs with `linear' crossing number are contained in a topologically-closed class, while graphs with bounded crossing number are contained in a minor-closed class.
Plücker environments, wiring and tiling diagrams, and weakly separated set-systems

For the ordered set $[n]$ of $n$ elements, we consider the class $\Bscr_n$ of bases $B$ of tropical Plücker functions on $2^{[n]}$ such that $B$ can be obtained by a series of mutations (flips) from the basis formed by the intervals in $[n]$. We show that these bases are representable by special wiring diagrams and by certain arrangements generalizing rhombus tilings on the $n$-zonogon. Based on the generalized tiling representation, we then prove that each weakly separated set-system in $2^{[n]}$ having maximum possible size belongs to $\Bscr_n$, thus answering affirmatively a conjecture due to Leclerc and Zelevinsky. We also prove an analogous result for a hyper-simplex $Δ_n^m=\{S\subseteq[n]\colon |S|=m\}$.
The topology of the space of matrices of Barvinok rank two
The Barvinok rank of a $d \times n$ matrix is the minimum number of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that the tropical convex hull of the points contains all columns of the matrix. The concept originated in work by Barvinok and others on the travelling salesman problem. Our object of study is the space of real $d \times n$ matrices of Barvinok rank two. Let $B_{d,n}$ denote this space modulo rescaling and translation. We show that $B_{d,n}$ is a manifold, thereby settling a conjecture due to Develin. In fact, $B_{d,n}$ is homeomorphic to the quotient of the product of spheres $S^{d-2} \times S^{n-2}$ under the involution which sends each point to its antipode simultaneously in both components. In addition, using discrete Morse theory, we compute the integral homology of $B_{d,n}$. Assuming $d \ge n$, for odd $d$ the homology turns out to be isomorphic to that of $S^{d-2} \times \mathbb{RP}^{n-2}$. This is true also for even $d$ up to degree $d-3$, but the two cases differ from degree $d-2$ and up. The homology computation straightforwardly extends to more general complexes of the form $(S^{d-2} \times X)/\mathbb{Z}_2$, where $X$ is a finite cell complex of dimension at most $d-2$ admitting a free $\mathbb{Z}_2$-action.
Anisotropic Young diagrams and infinite-dimensional diffusion processes with the Jack parameter

We construct a family of Markov processes with continuous sample trajectories on an infinite-dimensional space, the Thoma simplex. The family depends on three continuous parameters, one of which, the Jack parameter, is similar to the beta parameter in random matrix theory. The processes arise in a scaling limit transition from certain finite Markov chains, the so called up-down chains on the Young graph with the Jack edge multiplicities. Each of the limit Markov processes is ergodic and its stationary distribution is a symmetrizing measure. The infinitesimal generators of the processes are explicitly computed; viewed as selfadjoint operators in the L^2 spaces over the symmetrizing measures, the generators have purely discrete spectrum which is explicitly described.
For the special value 1 of the Jack parameter, the limit Markov processes coincide with those of the recent work by Borodin and the author (Prob. Theory Rel. Fields 144 (2009), 281--318; arXiv:0706.1034). In the limit as the Jack parameter goes to 0, our family of processes degenerates to the one-parameter family of diffusions on the Kingman simplex studied long ago by Ethier and Kurtz in connection with some models of population genetics.
The techniques of the paper are essentially algebraic. The main computations are performed in the algebra of shifted symmetric functions with the Jack parameter and rely on the concept of anisotropic Young diagrams due to Kerov.

We prove that the combinatorial distance between any two reduced expressions of a given permutation of {1, ..., n} in terms of transpositions lies in O(n^4), a sharp bound. Using a connection with the intersection numbers of certain curves in van Kampen diagrams, we prove that this bound is sharp, and give a practical criterion for proving that the derivations provided by the reversing algorithm of [Dehornoy, JPAA 116 (1997) 115-197] are optimal. We also show the existence of length l expressions whose reversing requires C l^4 elementary steps.
