Cyclic Codes and Sequences from Kasami-Welch Functions
Let $q=2^n$, $0\leq k\leq n-1$ and $k\neq n/2$. In this paper we determine the value distribution of following exponential sums \[\sum\limits_{x\in \bF_q}(-1)^{\Tra_1^n(αx^{2^{3k}+1}+βx^{2^k+1})}\quad(α,β\in \bF_{q})\] and \[\sum\limits_{x\in \bF_q}(-1)^{\Tra_1^n(αx^{2^{3k}+1}+βx^{2^k+1}+\ga x)}\quad(α,β,\ga\in \bF_{q})\] where $\Tra_1^n: \bF_{2^n}\ra \bF_2$ is the canonical trace mapping. As applications: (1). We determine the weight distribution of the binary cyclic codes $\cC_1$ and $\cC_2$ with parity-check polynomials $h_2(x)h_3(x)$ and $h_1(x)h_2(x)h_3(x)$ respectively where $h_1(x)$, $h_2(x)$ and $h_3(x)$ are the minimal polynomials of $π^{-1}$, $π^{-(2^k+1)}$ and $π^{-(2^{3k}+1)}$ respectively for a primitive element $π$ of $\bF_q$. (2). We determine the correlation distribution among a family of binary m-sequences.
Exponential Sums, Cyclic Codes and Sequences: the Odd Characteristic Kasami Case
Let $q=p^n$ with $n=2m$ and $p$ be an odd prime. Let $0\leq k\leq n-1$ and $k\neq m$. In this paper we determine the value distribution of following exponential(character) sums \[\sum\limits_{x\in \bF_q}ζ_p^{\Tra_1^m (αx^{p^{m}+1})+\Tra_1^n(βx^{p^k+1})}\quad(α\in \bF_{p^m},β\in \bF_{q})\] and \[\sum\limits_{x\in \bF_q}ζ_p^{\Tra_1^m (αx^{p^{m}+1})+\Tra_1^n(βx^{p^k+1}+\ga x)}\quad(α\in \bF_{p^m},β,\ga\in \bF_{q})\] where $\Tra_1^n: \bF_q\ra \bF_p$ and $\Tra_1^m: \bF_{p^m}\ra\bF_p$ are the canonical trace mappings and $ζ_p=e^{\frac{2πi}{p}}$ is a primitive $p$-th root of unity. As applications: (1). We determine the weight distribution of the cyclic codes $\cC_1$ and $\cC_2$ over $\bF_{p^t}$ with parity-check polynomials $h_2(x)h_3(x)$ and $h_1(x)h_2(x)h_3(x)$ respectively where $t$ is a divisor of $d=\gcd(m,k)$, and $h_1(x)$, $h_2(x)$ and $h_3(x)$ are the minimal polynomials of $π^{-1}$, $π^{-(p^k+1)}$ and $π^{-(p^m+1)}$ over $\bF_{p^t}$ respectively for a primitive element $π$ of $\bF_q$. (2). We determine the correlation distribution among a family of m-sequences. This paper extends the results in \cite{Zen Li}.

Eisenbud and Harris introduced the theory of limit linear series, and constructed a space parametrizing their limit linear series. Recently, Osserman introduced a new space which compactifies the Eisenbud-Harris construction. In the Eisenbud-Harris space, the set of refined limit linear series is always dense on a general reducible curve. Osserman asks when the same is true for his space. In this paper, we answer his question by characterizing the situations when the crude limit linear series contain an open subset of his space.

We provide a combinatorial approach to the largest power of $p$ in the number of permutations $π$ with $π^p=1$, for a fixed prime number $p$. With this approach, we find the largest power of $2$ in the number of involutions, in the signed sum of involutions and in the numbers of even or odd involutions.

We describe the scaling limit of the nearest neighbour prudent walk on the square lattice, which performs steps uniformly in directions in which it does not see sites already visited. We show that the scaling limit is given by the process Z(u) = s_1 theta^+(3u/7) e_1 + s_2 theta^-(3u/7) e_2, where e_1, e_2 is the canonical basis, theta^+(t), resp. theta^-(t), is the time spent by a one-dimensional Brownian motion above, resp. below, 0 up to time t, and s_1, s_2 are two random signs. In particular, the asymptotic speed of the walk is well-defined in the L^1-norm and equals 3/7.
The complement of a connected bipartite graph is vertex decomposable
Associated to a simple undirected graph $G$ is a simplicial complex $Δ_G$ whose faces correspond to the independent sets of $G$. A graph $G$ is called vertex decomposable if $Δ_G$ is a vertex decomposable simplicial complex. We are interested in determining what families of graph have the property that the complement of $G$, denoted by $\overline{G}$, is vertex decomposable. We obtain the result that the complement of a connected bipartite graph is vertex decomposable and so it is Cohen-Macaulay due to pureness of $Δ_{\overline{G}}$.
Distance Graphs of Metric Spaces with Rosenbloom - Tsfasman metric
Rosenbloom and Tsfasman introduced a new metric (RT metric) which is a generalization of the Hamming metric. In this paper we study the distance graphs of spaces $Z_q^n$ and $S_n$ with Rosenbloom -Tsfasman metric. We also describe the degrees of vertices, components and the chromatic number of these graphs.
On the multiplicative order of $a^n$ modulo $n$

Let $n$ be a positive integer and $α_n$ be the arithmetic function which assigns the multiplicative order of $a^n$ modulo $n$ to every integer $a$ coprime to $n$ and vanishes elsewhere. Similarly, let $β_n$ assign the projective multiplicative order of $a^n$ modulo $n$ to every integer $a$ coprime to $n$ and vanishes elsewhere. In this paper, we present a study of these two arithmetic functions. In particular, we prove that for positive integers $n_1$ and $n_2$ with the same square-free part, there exists an exact relationship between the functions $α_{n_1}$ and $α_{n_2}$ and between the functions $β_{n_1}$ and $β_{n_2}$. This allows us to reduce the determination of $α_n$ and $β_n$ to the case where $n$ is square-free. These arithmetic functions recently appeared in the context of an old problem of Molluzzo, and more precisely in the study of which arithmetic progressions yield a balanced Steinhaus triangle in $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ for $n$ odd.
Intersection matrices revisited

Several intersection matrices of $s$-subsets vs. $k$-subsets of a $v$-set are introduced in the literature. We study these matrices systematically through counting arguments and generating function techniques. A number of new or known identities appear as natural consequences of this viewpoint; especially, appearance of the derivative operator $d/dz$ and some related operators reveals some connections between intersection matrices and the "combinatorics of creation-annihilation". As application, the eigenvalues of several intersection matrices including some generalizations of the adjacency matrices of the Johnson scheme are derived; two new bases for the Bose--Mesner algebra of the Johnson scheme are introduced and the associated intersection numbers are obtained as well. Finally, we determine the rank of some intersection matrices.
Soliton solutions of the KP equation and application to shallow water waves

The main purpose of this paper is to give a survey of recent development on a classification of soliton solutions of the KP equation. The paper is self-contained, and we give a complete proof for the theorems needed for the classification. The classification is based on the Schubert decomposition of the real Grassmann manifold, Gr$(N,M)$, the set of $N$-dimensional subspaces in $\mathbb{R}^M$. Each soliton solution defined on Gr$(N,M)$ asymptotically consists of the $N$ number of line-solitons for $y\gg 0$ and the $M-N$ number of line-solitons for $y\ll 0$. In particular, we give the detailed description of those soliton solutions associated with Gr$(2,4)$, which play a fundamental role of multi-soliton solutions. We then consider a physical application of some of those solutions related to the Mach reflection discussed by J. Miles in 1977.
Symmetric functions, codes of partitions and the KP hierarchy

We consider an operator of Bernstein for symmetric functions, and give an explicit formula for its action on an arbitrary Schur function. This formula is given in a remarkably simple form when written in terms of some notation based on the code of a partition. As an application, we give a new and very simple proof of a classical result for the KP hierarchy, which involves the Plucker relations for Schur function coefficients in a tau function for the hierarchy. This proof is especially compact because of a restatement that we give for the Plucker relations that is symmetrical in terms of partition code notation.

We introduce an extension, indexed by a partially ordered set P and cardinal numbers k,l, denoted by (k,l)-->P, of the classical relation (k,n,l)--> r in infinite combinatorics. By definition, (k,n,l)--> r holds, if every map from the n-element subsets of k to the subsets of k with less than l elements has a r-element free set. For example, Kuratowski's Free Set Theorem states that (k,n,l)-->n+1 holds iff k is larger than or equal to the n-th cardinal successor l^{+n} of the infinite cardinal k. By using the (k,l)-->P framework, we present a self-contained proof of the first author's result that (l^{+n},n,l)-->n+2, for each infinite cardinal l and each positive integer n, which solves a problem stated in the 1985 monograph of Erdös, Hajnal, Mate, and Rado. Furthermore, by using an order-dimension estimate established in 1971 by Hajnal and Spencer, we prove the relation (l^{+(n-1)},r,l)-->2^m, where m is the largest integer below (1/2)(1-2^{-r})^{-n/r}, for every infinite cardinal l and all positive integers n and r with r larger than 1 but smaller than n. For example, (\aleph_{210},4,\aleph_0)-->32,768. Other order-dimension estimates yield relations such as (\aleph_{109},4,\aleph_0)--> 257 (using an estimate by Füredi and Kahn) and (\aleph_7,4,\aleph_0)-->10 (using an exact estimate by Dushnik).
Counting domino trains
In this paper we present a way to count the number of trains that we can construct with a given set of domino pieces. As an application we obtain a new method to compute the total number of eulerian paths in an undirected graph as well as their starting and ending vertices.

Single-scale quantities, like the QCD anomalous dimensions and Wilson coefficients, obey difference equations. Therefore their analytic form can be determined from a finite number of moments. We demonstrate this in an explicit calculation by establishing and solving large scale recursions by means of computer algebra for the anomalous dimensions and Wilson coefficients in unpolarized deeply inelastic scattering from their Mellin moments to 3-loop order.

Constructing and studying distributed control systems requires the analysis of the Laplacian spectra and the forest structure of directed graphs. In this paper, we present some basic results of this analysis partially obtained by the present authors. We also discuss the application of these results to decentralized control and touch upon some problems of spectral graph theory.

R. L. Graham and H. O. Pollak observed that the sequence $$u_1=1,\qquad u_{n+1}=\lfloor \sqrt{2} (u_n+1/2)\rfloor, \quad n\geq 1,$$ has the curious property that the sequence of numbers $(u_{2n+1}-2u_{2n-1})_{n\geq 1}$ denotes the binary digits of $\sqrt{2}$. We present an extension of Graham--Pollak's sequence which allows to get -- in a fancy way -- the binary digits of $759250125\sqrt{2}$ and other numbers.

Single scale quantities, as anomalous dimensions and hard scattering cross sections, in renormalizable Quantum Field Theories are found to obey difference equations of finite order in Mellin space. It is often easier to calculate fixed moments for these quantities compared to a direct attempt to derive them in terms of harmonic sums and their generalizations involving the Mellin parameter $N$. Starting from a sufficiently large number of given moments, we establish linear recurrence relations of lowest possible order with polynomial coefficients of usually high degree. Then these recurrence equations are solved in terms of d'Alembertian solutions where the involved nested sums are represented in optimal nested depth. Given this representation, it is then an easy task to express the result in terms of harmonic sums. In this process we compactify the result such that no algebraic relations occur among the sums involved. We demonstrate the method for the QCD unpolarized anomalous dimensions and massless Wilson coefficients to 3--loop order treating the contributions for individual color coefficients. For the most complicated subproblem 5114 moments were needed in order to produce a recurrence of order 35 whose coefficients have degrees up to 938. About four months of CPU time were needed to establish and solve the recurrences for the anomalous dimensions and Wilson coefficients on a 2 GHz machine requiring less than 10 GB of memory. No algorithm is known yet to provide such a high number of moments for 3--loop quantities. Yet the method presented shows that it is possible to establish and solve recurrences of rather large order and and degree, occurring in physics problems, uniquely, fast and reliably with computer algebra.
On a triangulated category which behaves like a cluster category of infinite Dynkin type, and the relation to triangulations of the infinity-gon
This paper investigates a certain 2-Calabi-Yau triangulated category D whose Auslander-Reiten quiver is ZA_{\infty}. We show that the cluster tilting subcategories of D form a so-called cluster structure, and we classify these subcategories in terms of what one may call `triangulations of the infinity-gon'. This is reminiscent of the cluster category C of type A_n which is a 2-Calabi-Yau triangulated category whose Auslander-Reiten quiver is a quotient of ZA_n. The cluster tilting subcategories of C form a cluster structure and they are classified in terms of triangulations of the (n+3)-gon. The category D behaves like a `cluster category of type A_{\infty}'.

This note corrects a pretty serious mistake and some inaccuracies in "Consensus and cooperation in networked multi-agent systems" by R. Olfati-Saber, J.A. Fax, and R.M. Murray, published in Vol. 95 of the Proceedings of the IEEE (2007, No. 1, P. 215-233). It also mentions several stronger results applicable to the class of problems under consideration and addresses the issue of priority whose interpretation in the above-mentioned paper is not exact.

A Shilla distance-regular graph G (say with valency k) is a distance-regular graph with diameter 3 such that its second largest eigenvalue equals to a3. We will show that a3 divides k for a Shilla distance-regular graph G, and for G we define b=b(G):=k/a3. In this paper we will show that there are finitely many Shilla distance-regular graphs G with fixed b(G)>=2. Also, we will classify Shilla distance-regular graphs with b(G)=2 and b(G)=3. Furthermore, we will give a new existence condition for distance-regular graphs, in general.
