We give a bijective proof of an identity relating primed shifted gl(n)-standard tableaux to the product of a gl(n) character in the form of a Schur function and a product of sums of x and y terms. This result generalises a number of well--known results due to Robbins and Rumsey, Chapman, Tokuyama, Okada and Macdonald. An analogous result is then obtained in the case of primed shifted sp(2n)-standard tableaux which are bijectively related to the product of a t-deformed sp(2n) character and another x and y product. All results are also interpreted in terms of alternating sign matrix identities, including a result regarding subsets of ASMs specified by conditions on certain restricted column sums.
The Möbius function of the composition poset

We determine the Möbius function of the poset of compositions of an integer. In fact we give two proofs of this formula, one using an involution and one involving discrete Morse theory. The composition poset turns out to be intimately connected with subword order, whose Möbius function was determined by Björner. We show that using a generalization of subword order, we can obtain both Björner's results and our own as special cases.
Tables of Calabi--Yau equations
The main part of this paper is a big table containing what we believe to be a complete list of all fourth order equations of Calabi--Yau type known so far. In the text preceding the tables we explain what a differential equation of Calabi--Yau type is and we briefly discuss how we found these equations. We also describe an electronic version of this list.
A closed formula for the derivatives of $\ds e^{f(x)}$
We give a closed formula for the derivative of arbitrary order of the function $\ds g(x)=\exp(f(x))$.
Methods for the construction of generators of algebraic curvature tensors
We demonstrate the use of several tools from Algebraic Combinatorics such as Young tableaux, symmetry operators, the Littlewood-Richardson rule and discrete Fourier transforms of symmetric groups in investigations of algebraic curvature tensors.
Extending Fine sequences: a link with forbidden patterns
We propose a natural, bivariate, generalization of the nonsingular similarity relations considered by T. Fine. We also provide an enumeration formulae and a generating tree for those relations. The latter allow us to give a new bijection between 321-avoiding derangements and Fine sequences. Moreover, we establish that two special cases are in a one-to-one correspondence with subsets of permutations characterized by forbidden subsequences on the symmetrical group. All our results are established using the technique of generating tree, thus giving entirely bijective proofs.
Trends in Topological Combinatorics
This thesis opens with an introductory discussion, where the reader is gently led to the world of topological combinatorics, and, where the results of this Habilitationsschrift are portrayed against the backdrop of the broader philosophy of the subject. That introduction is followed by 5 chapters, where the main body of research is presented, and 4 appendices, where various standard tools and notations, which we use throughout the text, are collected.
Relations between Potts and RSOS models on a torus

We study the relationship between Q-state Potts models and staggered RSOS models of the A\_{p-1} type on a torus, with sqrt(Q)=2 cos(pi / p). In general the partition functions of these models differ due to clusters of non-trivial topology. However we find exact identities, valid for any temperature and any finite size of the torus, between various modified partition functions in the two pictures. The field theoretic interpretation of these modified partition function is discussed.

We study set-theoretic solutions $(X,r)$ of the Yang-Baxter equations on a set $X$ in terms of the induced left and right actions of $X$ on itself. We give a characterization of involutive square-free solutions in terms of cyclicity conditions. We characterise general solutions in terms of abstract matched pair properties of the associated monoid $S(X,r)$ and we show that $r$ extends as a solution $(S(X,r),r_S)$. Finally, we study extensions of solutions both directly and in terms of matched pairs of their associated monoids. We also prove several general results about matched pairs of monoids $S$ of the required type, including iterated products $S\bowtie S\bowtie S$ equivalent to $r_S$ a solution, and extensions $(S\bowtie T,r_{S\bowtie T})$. Examples include a general `double' construction $(S\bowtie S,r_{S\bowtie S})$ and some concrete extensions, their actions and graphs based on small sets.

We present a bijection between non-crossing partitions of the set $[2n+1]$ into $n+1$ blocks such that no block contains two consecutive integers, and the set of sequences $\{s_{i}\}_{1}^{n}$ such that $1 \leq s_{i} \leq i$, and if $s_{i}=j$, then $s_{i-r} \leq j-r$ for $1 \leq r \leq j-1$.

We continue the study on sheaves of rings on finite posets. We present examples where the ring of global sections coincide with toric faces rings, quotients of a polynomial ring by a monomial ideal and algebras with straightening laws. We prove a rank-selection theorem which generalizes the well-known rank-selection theorem of Stanley-Reisner rings. Finally, we determine an explicit presentation of certain global rings of sections.
Kocay's lemma, Whitney's theorem, and some polynomial invariant reconstruction problems

Given a graph G, an incidence matrix N(G) is defined for the set of distinct isomorphism types of induced subgraphs of G. If Ulam's conjecture is true, then every graph invariant must be reconstructible from this matrix, even when the graphs indexing the rows and the columns of N(G) are unspecified. It is proved that the characteristic polynomial, the rank polynomial, and the number of spanning trees of a graph are reconstructible from its N-matrix. These results are stronger than the original results of Tutte in the sense that actual subgraphs are not used. It is also proved that the characteristic polynomial of a graph with minimum degree 1 can be computed from the characteristic polynomials of all its induced proper subgraphs. The ideas in Kocay's lemma play a crucial role in most proofs. Here Kocay's lemma is used to prove Whitney's subgraph expansion theorem in a simple manner. The reconstructibility of the characteristic polynomial is then demonstrated as a direct consequence of Whitney's theorem as formulated here.

We attempt to explain the ubiquity of tableaux and of Pieri and Cauchy formulae for combinatorially defined families of symmetric functions. We show that such formulae are to be expected from symmetric functions arising from representations of Heisenberg algebras. The resulting framework that we describe is a generalization of the classical Boson-Fermion correspondence, from which Schur functions arise. Our work can be used to understand Hall-Littlewood polynomials, Macdonald polynomials and Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon's ribbon functions, together with other new families of symmetric functions.
Limit shapes of multiplicative measures associated with coagulation-fragmentation processes and random combinatorial structures
We find limit shapes for a family of multiplicative measures on the set of partitions, induced by exponential generating functions with expansive parameters, $a_k\sim Ck^{p-1}, k\to\infty, p>0$,where $C$ is a positive constant. The measures considered are associated with reversible coagulation-fragmentation processes and certain combinatorial structures, known as assemblies. We prove the functional central limit theorem for the fluctuations of a scaled random partition from its limit shape. We demonstrate that when the component size passes beyond the threshold value, the independence of numbers of components transforms into their conditional independence. Among other things, the paper also discusses, in a general setting, the interplay between limit shapes, threshold and gelation.
Logged Rewriting for Monoids
A rewriting system is a set of equations over a given set of terms called rules that characterize a system of computation and is a powerful general method for providing decision procedures of equational theories, based upon the principle of replacing subterms of an expression with other terms.
In particular, a string rewriting system is usually associated with a monoid presentation. At the first level the problem is to decide which combinations of the generators are equivalent under the given rules; Knuth-Bendix completion of the string rewriting system is one of the most successful mechanisms for solving this problem. At the second level, the problem involves determining which combinations of rules are equivalent.
Logged rewriting is a technique which not only transforms strings but records the transformation in terms of the original system of rules. The relations between combinatorial, homotopical and homological finiteness conditions for monoids prompt us to consider using computer-friendly rewriting systems to calculate homotopical and homological structure from monoid presentations.

We show that the n-th power of the first Stiefel-Whitney class of the Z_2-operation on the graph complex Hom(C_{2r+1},K_{n+2})$ is zero, confirming a conjecture by Babson and Kozlov. This proves the strong form of their graph colouring theorem, which they had only proven for odd n. Our proof is also considerably simpler than their proof of the weak form of the theorem, which is also known as the Lovász conjecture.
On the sign-imbalance of skew partition shapes
Let the sign of a skew standard Young tableau be the sign of the permutation you get by reading it row by row from left to right, like a book. We examine how the sign property is transferred by the skew Robinson-Schensted correspondence invented by Sagan and Stanley. The result is a remarkably simple generalization of the ordinary non-skew formula. The sum of the signs of all standard tableaux on a given skew shape is the sign-imbalance of that shape. We generalize previous results on the sign-imbalance of ordinary partition shapes to skew ones.

The Lefschetz hyperplane section theorem asserts that an affine variety is homotopy equivalent to a space obtained from its generic hyperplane section by attaching some cells. The purpose of this paper is to describe attaching maps of these cells for the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement defined over real numbers. The cells and attaching maps are described in combinatorial terms of chambers. We also discuss the cellular chain complex with coefficients in a local system and a presentation for the fundamental group associated to the minimal CW-decomposition for the complement.

Given a simplicial hyperplane arrangement H and a subspace arrangement A embedded in H, we define a simplicial complex Delta_{A,H} as the subdivision of the link of A induced by H. In particular, this generalizes Steingrimsson's coloring complex of a graph.
We do the following:
(1) When A is a hyperplane arrangement, Delta_{A,H} is shown to be shellable. As a special case, we answer affirmatively a question of Steingrimsson on coloring complexes.
(2) For H being a Coxeter arrangement of type A or B we obtain a close connection between the Hilbert series of the Stanley-Reisner ring of Delta_{A,H} and the characteristic polynomial of A. This extends results of Steingrimsson and provides an interpretation of chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs and signed graphs in terms of Hilbert polynomials.

Let $V$ be a vector space of dimension $v$ over a field of order $q$. The $q$-Kneser graph has the $k$-dimensional subspaces of $V$ as its vertices, where two subspaces $α$ and $β$ are adjacent if and only if $α\capβ$ is the zero subspace. This paper is motivated by the problem of determining the chromatic numbers of these graphs. This problem is trivial when $k=1$ (and the graphs are complete) or when $v<2k$ (and the graphs are empty). We establish some basic theory in the general case. Then specializing to the case $k=2$, we show that the chromatic number is $q^2+q$ when $v=4$ and $(q^{v-1}-1)/(q-1)$ when $v > 4$. In both cases we characterise the minimal colourings.
