Published in JIMJ (2007) 6(3), 501-525 • View PublicationBIB
We explain a strategy for a proof of the positivity of all coefficients of Kazhdan-Lusztig-polynomials for arbitrary Coxeter groups by constructing spaces whose dimensions we conjecture to be these coefficients.

The limit of a Stanley-Wilf sequence is not always rational, and layered patterns beat monotone patterns
We show the first known example for a pattern $q$ for which $\lim_{n\to \infty} \sqrt[n]{S_n(q)}$ is not an integer. We find the exact value of the limit and show that it is irrational. Then we generalize our results to an infinite sequence of patterns. Finally, we provide further generalizations that start explaining why certain patterns are easier to avoid than others. Finally, we show that if $q$ is a layered pattern of length $k$, then $L(q)\geq (k-1)^2$ holds.

A graphic generalization of arithmetic
In this paper, we extend the classical arithmetic defined over the set of natural numbers N, to the set of all finite directed connected multigraphs having a pair of distinct distinguished vertices. Specifically, we introduce a model F on the set of such graphs, and provide an interpretation of the language of arithmetic L={0,1,<=,+,x} inside F. The resulting model exhibits the property that the standard model on N embeds in F as a submodel, with the directed path of length n playing the role of the standard integer n. We will compare the theory of the larger structure F with classical arithmetic statements that hold in N. For example, we explore the extent to which F enjoys properties like the associativity and commutativity of + and x, distributivity, cancellation and order laws, and decomposition into irreducibles.

Pieces of 2^d: Existence and uniqueness for Barnes-Wall and Ypsilanti lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a new existence proof for the rank 2^d even lattices usually called the Barnes-Wall lattices, and establish new results on uniqueness, structure and transitivity of the automorphism group on certain kinds of sublattices. Our proofs are relatively free of calculations, matrix work and counting, due to the uniqueness viewpoint. We deduce the labeling of coordinates on which earlier constructions depend. Extending these ideas, we construct in dimensions 2^d, for d>>0, the Ypsilanti lattices, which are families of indecomposable even unimodular lattices which resemble the Barnes-Wall lattices. The number Upsilon (2^d) of isometry types here is large: log_2 (Upsilon (2^d)) has dominant term at least (r/4) d 2^{2d}, for any r in [0, 1/2). The Ypsilanti lattices may be the first explicitly given families whose sizes are asymptotically comparable to the Siegel mass formula estimate (log_2(mass(n)) has dominant term (1/4) log_2(n) n^2). This work continues our general uniqueness program for lattices, begun in Pieces of Eight. See also our new uniquness proof for the E_8-lattice.

The asymptotics of strongly regular graphs
A strongly regular graph is called trivial if it or its complement is a union of disjoint cliques. We prove that every infinite family of nontrivial strongly regular graphs is quasi-random in the sense of Chung, Graham and Wilson.

Dreidel Lasts $O(N^2)$ Spins
Dreidel is a popular game played during the festival of Chanukah. Players start with an equal number of tokens, donate one token each to a common pot, and take turns spinning a four-sided top, called the dreidel. Depending on the side showing up, the spinner takes all the tokens in the pot, takes half the tokens in the pot, gives a token to the pot, or does nothing. Whenever the pot goes empty, everyone donates a token to the pot. The game continues till all players, except one, go broke. We prove that the expected length of a game of dreidel is at most quadratic in the number of tokens, irrespective of the number of players. This proves a conjecture of Doron Zeilberger.

Non-backtracking random walks and cogrowth of graphs
Published in Canadian J. Math.59 (2007) 828-844 • View PublicationBIB
Let X be a locally finite, connected graph without vertices of degree 1. Non-backtracking random walk moves at each step with equal probability to one of the "forward" neighbours of the actual state, i.e., it does not go back along the preceding edge to the preceding state. This is not a Markov chain, but can be turned into a Markov chain whose state space is the set of oriented edges of X. Thus we obtain for infinite X that the n-step non-backtracking transition probabilities tend to zero, and we can also compute their limit when X is finite. This provides a short proof of old results concerning cogrowth of groups, and makes the extension of that result to arbitrary regular graphs rigorous. Even when X is non-regular, but "small cycles are dense" in X, we show that the graph X is non-amenable if and only if the non-backtracking n-step transition probabilities decay exponentially fast. This is a partial generalization of the cogrowth criterion for regular graphs which comprises the original cogrowth criterion for finitely generated groups of Grigorchuk and Cohen.

The Cube Recurrence
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct a combinatorial model that is described by the cube recurrence, a nonlinear recurrence relation introduced by Propp, which generates families of Laurent polynomials indexed by points in $\mathbb{Z}^3$. In the process, we prove several conjectures of Propp and of Fomin and Zelevinsky, and we obtain a combinatorial interpretation for the terms of Gale-Robinson sequences. We also indicate how the model might be used to obtain some interesting results about perfect matchings of certain bipartite planar graphs.
Character Sums and Congruences with n!
Published • View PublicationBIB
We estimate character sums with n!, on average, and individually. These bounds are used to derive new results about various congruences modulo a prime p and obtain new information about the spacings between quadratic nonresidues modulo p. In particular, we show that there exists a positive integer $n\ll p^{1/2+ε}, such that n! is a primitive root modulo p. We also show that every nonzero congruence class a \not \equiv 0 \pmod p can be represented as a product of 7 factorials, a \equiv n_1! ... n_7! \pmod p, where $\max \{n_i | i=1,... 7\}=O(p^{11/12+ε}), and we find the asymptotic formula for the number of such representations. Finally, we show that products of 4 factorials $n_1!n_2!n_3!n_4!, with \max\{n_1, n_2, n_3, n_4\}=O(p^{6/7+ε})$ represent ``almost all''residue classes modulo p, and that products of 3 factorials n_1!n_2!n_3! with \max\{n_1, n_2, n_3\}=O(p^{5/6+ε})$ are uniformly distributed modulo p.
Exponential Sums and Congruences with Factorials

We estimate the number of solutions of certain diagonal congruences involving factorials. We use these results to bound exponential sums with products of two factorials $n!m!$ and also derive asymptotic formulas for the number of solutions of various congruences with factorials. For example, we prove that the products of two factorials $n!m!$ with $\max\{n,m\}<p^{1/2+ε}$ are uniformly distributed modulo $p$, and that any residue class modulo $p$ is representable in the form $m!n!+n_1! + ... +n_{49}!$ with $\max \{m,n, n_1, >..., n_{49}\} < p^{8775/8794+ ε}$.

Limit of normalized quadrangulations: The Brownian map
Published in Annals of Probability 2006, Vol. 34, No. 6, 2144-2202 • View PublicationBIB
Consider $q_n$ a random pointed quadrangulation chosen equally likely among the pointed quadrangulations with $n$ faces. In this paper we show that, when $n$ goes to $+\infty$, $q_n$ suitably normalized converges weakly in a certain sense to a random limit object, which is continuous and compact, and that we name the Brownian map. The same result is shown for a model of rooted quadrangulations and for some models of rooted quadrangulations with random edge lengths. A metric space of rooted (resp. pointed) abstract maps that contains the model of discrete rooted (resp. pointed) quadrangulations and the model of the Brownian map is defined. The weak convergences hold in these metric spaces.
Determinants Associated to Zeta Matrices of Posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the matrix ${\frak Z}_P=Z_P+Z_P^t$, where the entries of $Z_P$ are the values of the zeta function of the finite poset $P$. We give a combinatorial interpretation of the determinant of ${\frak Z}_P$ and establish a recursive formula for this determinant in the case in which $P$ is a boolean algebra.

Sums of the Form 1/x_1^k + ... + 1/x_n^k Modulo a Prime
We show that for every $0 < ε\leq 1$ and integer $k\geq 1$, there exists an integer $n = n(ε,k)$ so that for all primes $p$, and integers $0 \leq a \leq p-1$, there exist integers $1 \leq x_1 < ... < x_n \leq p^ε$ such that $a \equiv x_1^{-1} + ... + x_n^{-1} \pmod{p}$. This extends a result of I. Shparlinski.

Lattice Path Matroids: Structural Properties
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2006 • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies structural aspects of lattice path matroids, a class of transversal matroids that is closed under taking minors and duals. Among the basic topics treated are direct sums, duals, minors, circuits, and connected flats. One of the main results is a characterization of lattice path matroids in terms of fundamental flats, which are special connected flats from which one can recover the paths that define the matroid. We examine some aspects related to key topics in the literature of transversal matroids and we determine the connectivity of lattice path matroids. We also introduce notch matroids, a minor-closed, dual-closed subclass of lattice path matroids, and we find their excluded minors.

Sets with small sumset and rectification
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the extent to which sets A in Z/NZ, N prime, resemble sets of integers from the additive point of view (``up to Freiman isomorphism''). We give a direct proof of a result of Freiman, namely that if |A + A| < K|A| and |A| < c(K)N then A is Freiman isomorphic to a set of integers. Because we avoid appealing to Freiman's structure theorem, we get a reasonable bound: we can take c(K) > exp(-cK^2 log K). As a byproduct of our argument we obtain a sharpening of the second author's result on sets with small sumset in torsion groups. For example if A is a subset of F_2^n, and if |A + A| < K|A|, then A is contained in a coset of a subspace of size no more than 2^{CK^2}|A|.
