In the unidimensional unfolding model, given m objects in general position there arise 1+m(m-1)/2 rankings. The set of rankings is called the ranking pattern of the m given objects. By changing these m objects, we can generate various ranking patterns. It is natural to ask how many ranking patterns can be generated and what is the probability of each ranking pattern when the objects are randomly chosen? These problems are studied by introducing a new type of arrangement called mid-hyperplane arrangement and by counting cells in its complement.
On the order of countable graphs

A set of graphs is said to be independent if there is no homomorphism between distinct graphs from the set. We consider the existence problems related to the independent sets of countable graphs. While the maximal size of an independent set of countable graphs is 2^omega the On Line problem of extending an independent set to a larger independent set is much harder. We prove here that singletons can be extended (``partnership theorem''). While this is the best possible in general, we give structural conditions which guarantee independent extensions of larger independent sets. This is related to universal graphs, rigid graphs and to the density problem for countable graphs.
Quadrangularity in Tournaments
The pattern of a matrix M is a (0,1)-matrix which replaces all non-zero entries of M with a 1. There are several contexts in which studying the patterns of orthogonal matrices can be useful. One necessary condition for a matrix to be orthogonal is a property known as combinatorial orthogonality. If the adjacency matrix of a directed graph forms a pattern of a combinatorially orthogonal matrix, we say the digraph is quadrangular. We look at the quadrangular property in tournaments and regular tournaments.
Introduction to double Hecke algebras

This paper is based on the introduction to the monograph ``Double affine Hecke algebras'' to be published by Cambridge University Press. The connections with Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations, Kac-Moody algebras, tau-function, harmonic analysis on symmetric spaces, and special functions are discussed. The rank one case is considered in detail including the classification of Verlinde algebras and their deformations, Gauss-Selberg integrals and Gaussian sums, a topological interpretation of DAHA, a relation of the rational DAHA to sl(2), and applications to the diagonal coinvariants. The last three sections are devoted to relations of the general DAHAs to the p-adic affine Hecke algebras, trigonometric and rational DAHAs, and applications to the Harish-Chandra theory. The purpose of this introduction is a demonstration that DAHA can be considered as a natural formalization of the concept of the Fourier transform in mathematics and physics.
A tropical morphism related to the hyperplane arrangement of the complete bipartite graph
We undertake a combinatorial study of the piecewise linear map g : R^{2m+2n} --> R^{mn} which assigns to the four vectors a, A in R^m and b, B in R^n the m by n matrix given by g_{ij} = min (a_i + b_j, A_i+B_j). This map arises naturally in Pachter and Sturmfels's work on the tropical geometry of statistical models. The image of g has been a subject of recent interest; it is the positive part of the tropical algebraic variety which parameterizes n-tuples of points on a tropical line in m-space.
The domains of linearity of g are the regions of the real hyperplane arrangement A_{m,n}, corresponding to the complete bipartite graph K_{m,n}. We explain how the images of (some of) the regions provide two polyhedral subdivisions of the image of g, one of which is a refinement of the other. The finer subdivision is particularly nice enumeratively: it has 2 {m \choose 2} {n \choose 2} r_{m-2,n-2} maximum-dimensional cells, where r_{m-2,n-2} is the number of regions of the arrangement A_{m-2,n-2}.
Deformed universal characters for classical and affine algebras

Creation operators are given for the three distinguished bases of the type BCD universal character ring of Koike and Terada yielding an elegant way of treating computations for all three types in a unified manner. Deformed versions of these operators create symmetric function bases whose expansion in the universal character basis, has polynomial coefficients in $q$ with non-negative integer coefficients. We conjecture that these polynomials are one-dimensional sums associated with crystal bases of finite-dimensional modules over quantized affine algebras for all nonexceptional affine types. These polynomials satisfy a Macdonald-type duality.

Discrete strip-concave functions considered in this paper are, in fact, equivalent to an extension of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns to the case when the pattern has a not necessarily triangular but convex configuration. They arise by releasing one of the three types of rhombus inequalities for discrete concave functions (or ``hives'') on a ``convex part'' of a triangular grid. The paper is devoted to a combinatorial study of certain polyhedra related to such functions or patterns, and results on faces, integer points and volumes of these polyhedra are presented. Also some relationships and applications are discussed.
In particular, we characterize, in terms of valid inequalities, the polyhedral cone formed by the boundary values of discrete strip-concave functions on a grid having trapezoidal configuration. As a consequence of this result, necessary and sufficient conditions on a pair of vectors to be the shape and content of a semi-standard skew Young tableau are obtained.

The generating functions of the major index and of the flag-major index, with each of the one-dimensional characters over the symmetric and hyperoctahedral group, respectively, have simple product formulas. In this paper, we give a factorial-type formula for the generating function of the D-major index with sign over the Weyl groups of type D. This completes a picture which is now known for all the classical Weyl groups.

Irreducible compositions and the first return to the origin of a random walk
Let $n = b_1 + ... + b_k = b_1' + \cdot + b_k'$ be a pair of compositions of $n$ into $k$ positive parts. We say this pair is {\em irreducible} if there is no positive $j < k$ for which $b_1 + ... b_j = b_1' + ... b_j'$. The probability that a random pair of compositions of $n$ is irreducible is shown to be asymptotic to $8/n$. This problem leads to a problem in probability theory. Two players move along a game board by rolling a die, and we ask when the two players will first coincide. A natural extension is to show that the probability of a first return to the origin at time $n$ for any mean-zero variance $V$ random walk is asymptotic to $\sqrt{V/(2 π)} n^{-3/2}$. We prove this via two methods, one analytic and one probabilistic.

Applying the enumeration of sparse set partitions, we show that the number of set systems H such that the emptyset is not in H, the total cardinality of edges in H is n, and the vertex set of H is {1, 2, ..., m}, equals (1/log(2)+o(1))^nb_n where b_n is the n-th Bell number. The same asymptotics holds if H may be a multiset. If vertex degrees in H are restricted to be at most k, the asymptotics is (1/alpha_k+o(1))^nb_n where alpha_k is the unique root of x^k/k!+...+x^1/1!-1 in (0,1].

Two remarks concerning balanced matroids

The property of balance (in the sense of Feder and Mihail) is investigated in the context of paving matroids. The following examples are exhibited: (a) a class of ``sparse'' paving matroids that are balanced, but at the same time rich enough combinatorially to permit the encoding of hard counting problems; and (b) a paving matroid that is not balanced. The computational significance of (a) is the following. As a consequence of balance, there is an efficient algorithm for approximating the number of bases of a sparse paving matroid within specified relative error. On the other hand, determining the number of bases exactly is likely to be computationally intractable.
Generalized Green functions and graded Hecke algebras
We state a conjecture which gives a combinatorial parametrization of the irreducible tempered representations with real central character of a graded Hecke algebra with unequal labels, associated to a root sytem of type B or C. This conjecture is based on a combinatorial generalization of the Springer correspondence in the classical (equal label) case. In particular, the described modules turn out to have a natural grading for the action of W_0, and are completely determined by their central character together with the W_0-representation in the top degree. This latter is an irreducible W_0-character which we call Springer correspondent.

If P is a hereditary property then we show that, for the existence of a perfect f-factor, P is a sufficient condition for countable graphs and yields a sufficient condition for graphs of size aleph_1. Further we give two examples of a hereditary property which is even necessary for the existence of a perfect f-factor. We also discuss the aleph_2-case.

Arbitrary rank jumps for $A$-hypergeometric systems through Laurent polynomials

We investigate the solution space of hypergeometric systems of differential equations in the sense of Gelfand, Graev, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. For any integer $d \geq 2$ we construct a matrix $A_d \in \N^{d \times 2d}$ and a parameter vector $β_d$ such that the holonomic rank of the $A$-hypergeometric system $H_{A_d}(β_d)$ exceeds the simplicial volume $\vol(A_d)$ by at least $d-1$. The largest previously known gap between rank and volume was two.
Our argument is elementary in that it uses only linear algebra, and our construction gives evidence to the general observation that rank-jumps seem to go hand in hand with the existence of multiple Laurent (or Puiseux) polynomial solutions.
Monomials of q and q,t-characters for non simply-laced quantum affinizations

Nakajima introduced the morphism of q,t-characters for finite dimensional representation of simply-laced quantum affine algebras : it is a t-deformation of the Frenkel-Reshetikhin's morphism of q-characters (sum of monomials in infinite variables). In math.QA/0212257 we generalized the construction of q,t-characters for non simply-laced quantum affine algebras. First in this paper we prove a conjecture of math.QA/0212257 : the monomials of q and q,t-characters of standard representations are the same in non simply-laced cases (the simply-laced cases were treated by Nakajima) and the coefficients are non negative. In particular these q,t-characters can be considered as t-deformations of q-characters. In the proof we show that for quantum affine algebras of type A, B, C and quantum toroidal algebras of type A^{(1)} the l-weight spaces of fundamental representations are of dimension 1. Eventually we show and use a generalization of results of Frenkel-Reshetikhin, -Mukhin and Nakajima : for general quantum affinizations we prove that the l-weights of a l-highest weight simple module are lower than the highest l-weight in the sense of monomials.

We show that the left-greedy algorithm is a better algorithm than the right-greedy algorithm for sorting permutations using t stacks in series when t>1. We also supply a method for constructing some permutations that can be sorted by t stacks in series and from this get a lower bound on the number of permutations of length n that are sortable by t stacks in series. Finally we show that the left-greedy algorithm is neither optimal nor defines a closed class of permutations for t>2.
