Measure convolution semigroups and non-infinitely divisible probability distributions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $μ$ be a probability measure (or corresponding random variable) such that all moments $μ_n$ exist. Knowledge of the moments is not sufficient to determine infinite divisibility of the measure; we show also that infinitely divisible, and in particular lognormal, distributions lose infinitely divisibilty when censored in certain ways even if all moments are arbitrarily close to those of the uncensored distribution. The moments of a composition of k copies of $μ$ are expressed as combinatorial compositions of the $μ_n$. We express the moments of the compositions in the context of occupancy problems, arranging n balls in k cells; the classical convolution is described by Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics and is multinomial. For certain non-infinitely divisible measures with moments increasing fast enough the indexing of a k-cell combinatorial composition is extended to indexing by non-negative real t and we construct classical convolution measure semigroups from amongst the t-indexed classes. We prove also that when a random variable with infinitely divisible distribution is embedded in a Lévy process $(Y_t)$ then the t-indexed Maxwell-Boltzmann is the law of $Y_t$. In order to get moment-based multinomial compositions indexed by a continuum we use random measures and random distributions rather than random variables. An alternative approach to embeddability of a non-infinitely divisible $μ$ is by considering non-classical convolution measure semigroups; for example embedding $μ$ in a Boolean convolution measure semigroup and retaining the multinomial character of the moments.embedding $μ$ in a Boolean convolution measure semigroup and retaining the multinomial character of the moments. Embedding $μ$ in an Urbanik convolution measure semigroup loses their multinomial character .

Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 11 (2004), #R44 • View PublicationBIB
There are 339 combinatorial types of generic metrics on six points. They correspond to the 339 regular triangulations of the second hypersimplex Δ(6,2), which also has 14 non-regular triangulations.
A Homotopy Theory for Graphs
The recently introduced A-homotopy groups for graphs are investigated. The main concern of the present article is the construction of an infinite cell complex, the homotopy groups of which are isomorphic to the A-homotopy groups of the given graph. We present a natural candidate for such a cell complex, together with a homomorphism between the corresponding groups that indeed yields an isomorphism, if a cubical analog of the simplicial approximation theorem holds, which - so far - we were unable to prove.
Computational Topology of Equivariant Maps from Spheres to Complements of Arrangements
We use a well known problem in discrete and computational geometry (partitions of measures by $k$-fans) as a motivation and as a point of departure to illustrate many aspects, both theoretical and computational, of the problem of calculating the obstructions for the existence of equivariant maps. A variety of techniques are introduced and discussed with the emphasis on concrete and explicit calculations. This eventually leads (Theorems 18 and 19) to an almost exhaustive analysis of when such maps do or do not exist in the particular case of interest.

First contact remarks on umbra difference calculus references streams
Published in Bull. Soc. Sci. Lett. Lodz, 60, (2005) pp. 17-25 ArXiv: math.CO/0403139 • Search Publication
The reference links to the modern classical umbral calculus before that known as blissardian symbolic method are numerous. Rota founded and then extended finite operator calculus has links to references which are plenty numerous. The references via links to the difference q calculus umbra way treaded or without even referring to umbra are giant numerous. These reference links now result in counting in thousands the relevant papers . The purpose of the present attempt is to offer one of the keys to enter the world of those thousands of references.
Analytic proof of the partition identity $A_{5,3,3}(n) = B^0_{5,3,3}(n)$
Published in Ramanujan J. 15 (2008), 77-86. • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we give an analytic proof of the identity $A_{5,3,3}(n) =B^0_{5,3,3}(n)$, where $A_{5,3,3}(n)$ counts the number of partitions of $n$ subject to certain restrictions on their parts, and $B^0_{5,3,3}(n)$ counts the number of partitions of $n$ subject to certain other restrictions on their parts, both too long to be stated in the abstract. Our proof establishes actually a refinement of that partition identity. The original identity was first discovered by the first author jointly with M. Ruby Salestina and S. R. Sudarshan in ["A new theorem on partitions," Proc. Int. Conference on Special Functions, IMSC, Chennai, India, September 23-27, 2002; to appear], where it was also given a combinatorial proof, thus responding a question of Andrews.

Cauchy type identities and corresponding fermatian matrices via non-comuting variables of extended finite operator calculus
Published in Proc. Jangjeon Math. Soc. Vol 8 (2005) no. 2. pp.191-196 • Search Publication
New family of extended Cauchy type identities is found and related Fermat type matrices are provided ready for applications in extended scope. This is achieved due to the use specifically non-commuting variables of extended finite operator calculus introduced by the author few years ago.
Properties of some character tables related to the symmetric groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We determine invariants like the Smith normal form and the determinant for certain integral matrices which arise from the character tables of the symmetric groups S_n and their double covers. In particular, we give a simple computation, based on the theory of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions, of the determinant of the regular character table of S_n with respect to an integer r>1. This result had earlier been proved by Olsson in a longer and more indirect manner. As a consequence, we obtain a new proof of the Mathas' Conjecture on the determinant of the Cartan matrix of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra. When r is prime we determine the Smith normal form of the regular character table. Taking r large yields the Smith normal form of the full character table of S_n. Analogous results are then given for spin characters.

A triple lacunary generating function for Hermite polynomials
Published in Elect. J. of Combinatorics 12(1) (2005) • View PublicationBIB
Some of the classical orthogonal polynomials such as Hermite, Laguerre, Charlier, etc. have been shown to be the generating polynomials for certain combinatorial objects. These combinatorial interpretations are used to prove new identities and generating functions involving these polynomials. In this paper we apply Foata's combinatorial interpretation of the Hermite polynomials as counting matchings of a set to obtain a triple lacunary generating function for the Hermite polynomials. We also give an umbral proof of this generating function.

An algebra of power series arising in the intersection theory of moduli spaces of curves and in the enumeration of ramified coverings of the sphere
A bracket is a function that assigns a number to each monomial in variables τ_0, τ_1, ... We show that any bracket satisfying the string and the dilaton relations gives rise to a power series lying in the algebra A generated by the series \sum n^{n-1} q^n/n! and \sum n^n q^n /n! . As a consequence, various series from A appear in the intersection theory of moduli spaces of curves. A connection between the counting of ramified coverings of the sphere and the intersection theory on moduli spaces allows us to prove that some natural generating functions enumerating the ramified coverings lie, yet again, in A. As an application, one can find the asymptotic of the number of such coverings as the number of sheets tends to infinity. We believe that the leading terms of the asymptotics like that correspond to observables in 2-dimensional gravity.

A note on blockers in posets
The blocker $A^{*}$ of an antichain $A$ in a finite poset $P$ is the set of elements minimal with the property of having with each member of $A$ a common predecessor. The following is done: 1. The posets $P$ for which $A^{**}=A$ for all antichains are characterized. 2. The blocker $A^*$ of a symmetric antichain in the partition lattice is characterized. 3. Connections with the question of finding minimal size blocking sets for certain set families are discussed.

Fixed points of involutive automorphisms of the Bruhat order
Published • View PublicationBIB
Applying a classical theorem of Smith, we show that the poset property of being Gorenstein$^*$ over $\mathbb{Z}_2$ is inherited by the subposet of fixed points under an involutive poset automorphism. As an application, we prove that every interval in the Bruhat order on (twisted) involutions in an arbitrary Coxeter group has this property, and we find the rank function. This implies results conjectured by F. Incitti. We also show that the Bruhat order on the fixed points of an involutive automorphism induced by a Coxeter graph automorphism is isomorphic to the Bruhat order on the fixed subgroup viewed as a Coxeter group in its own right.

Cocommutative Hopf algebras of permutations and trees
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 22 (2005), Number 4, pp. 451--470. • View PublicationBIB
Consider the coradical filtrations of the Hopf algebras of planar binary trees of Loday and Ronco and of permutations of Malvenuto and Reutenauer. We give explicit isomorphisms showing that the associated graded Hopf algebras are dual to the cocommutative Hopf algebras introduced in the late 1980's by Grossman and Larson. These Hopf algebras are constructed from ordered trees and heap-ordered trees, respectively. These results follow from the fact that whenever one starts from a Hopf algebra that is a cofree graded coalgebra, the associated graded Hopf algebra is a shuffle Hopf algebra.

Two new families of q-positive integers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $n,p,k$ be three positive integers. We prove that the rational fractions of $q$: $${n \brack k}_{q} {}_3φ_{2} [ . {matrix}q^{1-k},q^{-p},q^{p-n} q,q^{1-n} {matrix}| q;q^{k+1}]\quad\textrm{and}\quad q^{(n-p)p}\qbi{n}{k}{q} {}_3φ_2[ . {matrix}q^{1-k},q^{-p},q^{p-n} q,q^{1-n} {matrix}|q;q] $$ are polynomials of $q$ with positive integer coefficients. This generalizes a recent result of Lassalle (Ann. Comb. 6(2002), no. 3-4, 399-405), in the same way as the classical $q$-binomial coefficients refine the ordinary binomial coefficients.

Complete caps in projective space which are disjoint from a subspace of codimension two
Working over the field of order 2 we consider those complete caps (maximal sets of points with no three collinear) which are disjoint from some codimension 2 subspace of projective space. We derive restrictive conditions which such a cap must satisfy in order to be complete. Using these conditions we obtain explicit descriptions of complete caps which do not meet every hyperplane in at least 5 points. In particular, we determine the set of cardinalities of all such complete caps in all dimensions.

Cigler simple derivation of usual and extended Dobinski formula is recalled and it is noted that both may be interpreted as averages of powers of random variables with the corresponding usual or extended Poisson distributions. In parallel more general formulas of extended operator umbral calculi origin are revealed . The formulas encompass both earlier cases as very specific ones.

Sylvester-Gallai Theorems for Complex Numbers and Quaternions
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry 35 (2006), no. 3, 361--373 • View PublicationBIB
A Sylvester-Gallai (SG) configuration is a finite set S of points such that the line through any two points in S contains a third point of S. According to the Sylvester-Gallai Theorem, an SG configuration in real projective space must be collinear. A problem of Serre (1966) asks whether an SG configuration in a complex projective space must be coplanar. This was proved by Kelly (1986) using a deep inequality of Hirzebruch. We give an elementary proof of this result, and then extend it to show that an SG configuration in projective space over the quaternions must be contained in a three-dimensional flat.
