Let $ψ_1,...,ψ_k$ be periodic maps from $\Bbb Z$ to a field of characteristic p (where p is zero or a prime). Assume that positive integers $n_1,...,n_k$ not divisible by p are their periods respectively. We show that $ψ_1+...+ψ_k$ is constant if $ψ_1(x)+...+ψ_k(x)$ equals a constant for |S| consecutive integers x where S={r/n_s: r=0,...,n_s-1; s=1,...,k}. We also present some new results on finite systems of arithmetic sequences.

We propose a new approach to the multiplication of Schubert classes in the K-theory of the flag variety. This extends the work of Fomin and Kirillov in the cohomology case, and is based on the quadratic algebra defined by them. More precisely, we define K-theoretic versions of the Dunkl elements considered by Fomin and Kirillov, show that they commute, and use them to describe the structure constants of the K-theory of the flag variety with respect to its basis of Schubert classes.

The basic theme of this paper is the fact that if $A$ is a finite set of integers, then the sum and product sets cannot both be small. A precise formulation of this fact is Conjecture 1 below due to Erd\H os-Szemerédi [E-S]. (see also [El], [T], and [K-T] for related aspects.) Only much weaker results or very special cases of this conjecture are presently known. One approach consists of assuming the sum set $A + A$ small and then deriving that the product set $AA$ is large (using Freiman's structure theorem). (cf [N-T], [Na3].) We follow the reverse route and prove that if $|AA| < c|A|$, then $|A+A| > c^\prime |A|^2$ (see Theorem 1). A quantitative version of this phenomenon combined with Plünnecke type of inequality (due to Ruzsa) permit us to settle completely a related conjecture in [E-S] on the growth in $k$. If $$ g(k) \equiv \text{min}\{|A[1]| + |A\{1\}|\} $$ over all sets $A\subset \Bbb Z$ of cardinality $|A| = k$ and where $A[1]$ (respectively, $A\{1\}$) refers to the simple sum (resp., product) of elements of $A$. (See (0.6), (0.7).) It was conjectured in [E-S] that $g(k)$ grows faster than any power of $k$ for $k\to\infty$. We will prove here that $\ell n g(k)\sim\frac{(\ell n k)^2}{\ell n \ell n k}$ (see Theorem 2) which is the main result of this paper.

The lattice dimension of a tree
The lattice dimension of a graph G is the minimal dimension of a cubic lattice in which G can be isometrically embedded. We prove that the lattice dimension of a tree with n leaves is $\lceil n/2 \rceil$.
Long monotone paths on simple 4-polytopes

The Monotone Upper Bound Problem (Klee, 1965) asks if the number M(d,n) of vertices in a monotone path along edges of a d-dimensional polytope with n facets can be as large as conceivably possible: Is M(d,n) = M_{ubt}(d,n), the maximal number of vertices that a d-polytope with n facets can have according to the Upper Bound Theorem?
We show that in dimension d=4, the answer is ``yes'', despite the fact that it is ``no'' if we restrict ourselves to the dual-to-cyclic polytopes. For each n>=5, we exhibit a realization of a polar-to-neighborly 4-dimensional polytope with n facets and a Hamilton path through its vertices that is monotone with respect to a linear objective function.
This constrasts an earlier result, by which no polar-to-neighborly 6-dimensional polytope with 9 facets admits a monotone Hamilton path.

Normal Order: Combinatorial Graphs

A conventional context for supersymmetric problems arises when we consider systems containing both boson and fermion operators. In this note we consider the normal ordering problem for a string of such operators. In the general case, upon which we touch briefly, this problem leads to combinatorial numbers, the so-called Rook numbers. Since we assume that the two species, bosons and fermions, commute, we subsequently restrict ourselves to consideration of a single species, single-mode boson monomials. This problem leads to elegant generalisations of well-known combinatorial numbers, specifically Bell and Stirling numbers. We explicitly give the generating functions for some classes of these numbers. In this note we concentrate on the combinatorial graph approach, showing how some important classical results of graph theory lead to transparent representations of the combinatorial numbers associated with the boson normal ordering problem.

Two naturally occurring matroids representable over Q are shown to be dual: the {\it cyclotomic matroid} $μ_n$ represented by the $n^{th}$ roots of unity $1,ζ,ζ^2,...,ζ^{n-1}$ inside the cyclotomic extension $Q(ζ)$, and a direct sum of copies of a certain simplicial matroid, considered originally by Bolker in the context of transportation polytopes. A result of Adin leads to an upper bound for the number of $Q$-bases for $Q(ζ)$ among the $n^{th}$ roots of unity, which is tight if and only if $n$ has at most two odd prime factors. In addition, we study the Tutte polynomial of $μ_n$ in the case that $n$ has two prime factors.

A classical result of MacMahon gives a simple product formula for the generating function of major index over the symmetric group. A similar factorial-type product formula for the generating function of major index together with sign was given by Gessel and Simion. Several extensions are given in this paper, including a recurrence formula, a specialization at roots of unity and type $B$ analogues.
Stochastic processes in random graphs

We study the asymptotics of large, moderate and normal deviations for the connected components of the sparse random graph by the method of stochastic processes. We obtain the logarithmic asymptotics of large deviations of the joint distribution of the number of connected components, of the sizes of the giant components, and of the numbers of the excess edges of the giant components. For the supercritical case, we obtain the asymptotics of normal deviations and the logarithmic asymptotics of large and moderate deviations of the joint distribution of the number of components, of the size of the largest component, and of the number of the excess edges of the largest component. For the critical case, we obtain the logarithmic asymptotics of moderate deviations of the joint distribution of the sizes of connected components and of the numbers of the excess edges. Some related asymptotics are also established. The proofs of the large and moderate deviation asymptotics employ methods of idempotent probability theory. As a byproduct of the results, we provide some additional insight into the nature of phase transitions in sparse random graphs.

Pattern avoidance classes of permutations that cannot be expressed as unions of proper subclasses can be described as the set of subpermutations of a single bijection. In the case that this bijection is a permutation of the natural numbers a structure theorem is given. The structure theorem shows that the class is almost closed under direct sums or has a rational generating function.

In 2002, D. Hrencecin and L.H. Kauffman defined a filamentation invariant on oriented chord diagrams that may determine whether the corresponding flat virtual knot diagrams are non-trivial. A virtual knot diagram is non-classical if its related flat virtual knot diagram is non-trivial. Hence filamentations can be used to detect non-classical virtual knots. We extend these filamentation techniques to virtual links with more than one component. We also give examples of virtual links that they can detect as non-classical.

We give the explicit analytic development of Macdonald polynomials in terms of "modified complete" and elementary symmetric functions. These expansions are obtained by inverting the Pieri formula. Specialization yields similar developments for monomial, Jack and Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions.
A Lower Bound on the Density of Sphere Packings via Graph Theory
Using graph-theoretic methods we give a new proof that for all sufficiently large $n$, there exist sphere packings in $\R^n$ of density at least $cn2^{-n}$, exceeding the classical Minkowski bound by a factor linear in $n$. This matches up to a constant the best known lower bounds on the density of sphere packings due to Rogers, Davenport-Rogers, and Ball. The suggested method makes it possible to describe the points of such a packing with complexity $\exp(n\log n)$, which is significantly lower than in the other approaches.

Let $\be$ be a Borel subalgebra of a complex simple Lie algebra $\g$. An ideal of $\be$ is called ad-nilpotent, if it is contained in $[\be,\be]$. We give several descriptions of the normalizer of an ad-nilpotent ideal: using the weight of an ideal, or the affine Weyl group, or a relationship with dominant regions of the Shi arrangement. We also give a description of those ideals whose normalizer is equal to $\be$. For sl(n) and sp(2n), explicit enumerative results are obtained, which demonstrate a connection with some famous integer sequences.

We present a self-contained combinatorial approach to Fujita's conjectures in the toric case. Our main new result is a generalization of Fujita's very ampleness conjecture for toric varieties with arbitrary singularities. In an appendix, we use similar methods to give a new proof of an analogous toric generalization of Fujita's freeness conjecture due to Fujino.

The Ehrhart polynomial of a convex lattice polytope counts integer points in integral dilates of the polytope. We present new linear inequalities satisfied by the coefficients of Ehrhart polynomials and relate them to known inequalities. We also investigate the roots of Ehrhart polynomials. We prove that for fixed d, there exists a bounded region of C containing all roots of Ehrhart polynomials of d-polytopes, and that all real roots of these polynomials lie in [-d, [d/2]). In contrast, we prove that when the dimension d is not fixed the positive real roots can be arbitrarily large. We finish with an experimental investigation of the Ehrhart polynomials of cyclic polytopes and 0/1-polytopes.
