We construct a family of BC_n-symmetric biorthogonal abelian functions generalizing Koornwinder's orthogonal polynomials, and prove a number of their properties, most notably analogues of Macdonald's conjectures. The construction is based on a direct construction for a special case generalizing Okounkov's interpolation polynomials. We show that these interpolation functions satisfy a collection of generalized hypergeometric identities, including new multivariate elliptic analogues of Jackson's summation and Bailey's transformation.

We define a class of expressions for the multiple zeta function, and show how to determine whether an expression in the class vanishes identically. The class of such identities, which we call partition identities, is shown to coincide with the class of identities that can be derived as a consequence of the stuffle multiplication rule for multiple zeta values.

We define two finite q-analogs of certain multiple harmonic series with an arbitrary number of free parameters, and prove identities for these q-analogs, expressing them in terms of multiply nested sums involving the Gaussian binomial coefficients. Special cases of these identities--for example, with all parameters equal to 1--have occurred in the literature. The special case with only one parameter reduces to an identity for the divisor generating function, which has received some attention in connection with problems in sorting theory. The general case can be viewed as a duality result, reminiscent of the duality relation for the ordinary multiple zeta function.

Let A be an integer (d x n) matrix, and assume that the convex hull conv(A) of its columns is a simplex of dimension d-1. Write \NA for the semigroup generated by the columns of A. It was proved by M. Saito [math.AG/0012257] that the semigroup ring \CC[\NA] over the complex numbers \CC is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if the rank of the GKZ hypergeometric system H_A(beta) equals the normalized volume of conv(A) for all complex parameters beta in \CC^d. Our refinement here shows, in this simplicial case, that H_A(beta) has rank strictly larger than the volume of conv(A) if and only if beta lies in the Zariski closure in \CC^d of all \ZZ^d-graded degrees where the local cohomology H^i_m(\CC[\NA]) at the maximal ideal m is nonzero for some i < d.

A class of extended umbral calculi in operator form is presented. Extensions of all basic theorems of classical Finite Operator Calculus are shown to hold. The impossibility of straightforward extending of quantum q-plane formulation of the q-umbral caculus to the general psi-calculus case is demonstrated.

For an arbitrary finite Coxeter group W we define the family of Cambrian lattices for W as quotients of the weak order on W with respect to certain lattice congruences. We associate to each Cambrian lattice a complete fan, which we conjecture is the normal fan of a polytope combinatorially isomorphic to the generalized associahedron for W. In types A and B we obtain, by means of a fiber-polytope construction, combinatorial realizations of the Cambrian lattices in terms of triangulations and in terms of permutations. Using this combinatorial information, we prove in types A and B that the Cambrian fans are combinatorially isomorphic to the normal fans of the generalized associahedra and that one of the Cambrian fans is linearly isomorphic to Fomin and Zelevinsky's construction of the normal fan as a "cluster fan." Our construction does not require a crystallographic Coxeter group and therefore suggests a definition, at least on the level of cellular spheres, of a generalized associahedron for any finite Coxeter group. The Tamari lattice is one of the Cambrian lattices of type A, and two "Tamari" lattices in type B are identified and characterized in terms of signed pattern avoidance. We also show that open intervals in Cambrian lattices are either contractible or homotopy equivalent to spheres.
Combinatorics hidden in hyperbolic polynomials and related topics
The main topic of this paper is various "hyperbolic" generalizations of the Edmonds-Rado theorem on the rank of intersection of two matroids. We prove several results in this direction and pose a few questions. We also give generalizations of the Obreschkoff theorem and recent results of J. Borcea and B. Shapiro.

We present a construction for improving numerical cubature formulas with equal weights and a convolution structure, in particular equal-weight product formulas, using linear error-correcting codes. The construction is most effective in low degree with extended BCH codes. Using it, we obtain several sequences of explicit, positive, interior cubature formulas with good asymptotics for each fixed degree $t$ as the dimension $n \to \infty$. Using a special quadrature formula for the interval [arXiv:math.PR/0408360], we obtain an equal-weight $t$-cubature formula on the $n$-cube with $O(n^{\floor{t/2}})$ points, which is within a constant of the Stroud lower bound. We also obtain $t$-cubature formulas on the $n$-sphere, $n$-ball, and Gaussian $\R^n$ with $O(n^{t-2})$ points when $t$ is odd. When $μ$ is spherically symmetric and $t=5$, we obtain $O(n^2)$ points. For each $t \ge 4$, we also obtain explicit, positive, interior formulas for the $n$-simplex with $O(n^{t-1})$ points; for $t=3$, we obtain O(n) points. These constructions asymptotically improve the non-constructive Tchakaloff bound.
Some related results were recently found independently by Victoir, who also noted that the basic construction more directly uses orthogonal arrays.
A Note on Space Tiling Zonotopes
In 1908 Voronoi conjectured that every convex polytope which tiles space face-to-face by translations is affinely equivalent to the Dirichlet-Voronoi polytope of some lattice. In 1999 Erdahl proved this conjecture for the special case of zonotopes. A zonotope is a projection of a regular cube under some affine transformation. In 1975 McMullen showed several equivalent conditions for a zonotope to be a space tiling zonotope, i.e. a zonotope which admits a face-to-face tiling of space by translations. Implicitly, he related space tiling zonotopes to a special class of oriented matroids (regular matroids). We will extend his result to give a new proof of Voronoi's conjecture for zonotopes using oriented matroids. This enables us to distinguish between combinatorial and metrical properties and to apply the fact that oriented matroids considered here have an essentially unique realization. Originally, this is a theorem due to Brylawski and Lucas. By using oriented matroid duality we interpret a part of McMullen's arguments as an elegant geometric proof of this theorem in the special case of real numbers.

We give a unified explanation of the geometric and algebraic properties of two well-known maps, one from permutations to triangulations, and another from permutations to subsets. Furthermore we give a broad generalization of the maps. Specifically, for any lattice congruence of the weak order on a Coxeter group we construct a complete fan of convex cones with strong properties relative to the corresponding lattice quotient of the weak order. We show that if a family of lattice congruences on the symmetric groups satisfies certain compatibility conditions then the family defines a sub Hopf algebra of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. Such a sub Hopf algebra has a basis which is described by a type of pattern-avoidance. Applying these results, we build the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra as the limit of an infinite sequence of smaller algebras, where the second algebra in the sequence is the Hopf algebra of non-commutative symmetric functions. We also associate both a fan and a Hopf algebra to a set of permutations which appears to be equinumerous with the Baxter permutations.

We solve the boson normal ordering problem for F[(a*)^r a^s], with r,s positive integers, where a* and a are boson creation and annihilation operators satisfying [a,a*]=1. That is, we provide exact and explicit expressions for the normal form wherein all a's are to the right. The solution involves integer sequences of numbers which are generalizations of the conventional Bell and Stirling numbers whose values they assume for r=s=1. A comprehensive theory of such generalized combinatorial numbers is given including closed-form expressions (extended Dobinski-type formulas)and generating functions. These last are special expectation values in boson coherent states.

We give a combinatorial description of closed curves on oriented surfaces in terms of certain permutations, called charts. We describe automorphisms of curves in terms of charts and compute the total number of curves counted with appropriate weights. We also discuss relations between curves, Grothendieck dessins d'enfants, Riemann surfaces, Coxeter groups, and words.
Solution of the quasipositivity problem in the braid group
We give a computational algorithm which decides if a braid is quasipositive or not. A braid is quasipositive if it's a product of conjuguates of generators. For this, we use the theory of Garside and the combinatorials properties of the Artin monoid.

We outline the most recent theory for the computation of the exponential growth rate of the number of configurations on a multi-dimensional grid. As an application we compute the monomer-dimer constant for the 2-dimensional grid to 8 decimal digits, agreeing with the heuristic computations of Baxter, and for the 3-dimensional grid with an error smaller than 1.35%.

In this paper we show that the leading coefficient $μ(y,w)$ of certain Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials $P_{y,w}$ of the permutation group $\mathfrak S_n$ of 1,2,...,n are not greater than 1. More precisely, we show that the leading coefficients $μ(y,w)$ are not greater than 1 whenever $a(y)< a(w)$, where $a: \mathfrak S_n\to\mathbf N$ is the function defined by Lusztig.

For a graph $G$ whose degree sequence is $d_{1},..., d_{n}$, and for a positive integer $p$, let $e_{p}(G)=\sum_{i=1}^{n}d_{i}^{p}$. For a fixed graph $H$, let $t_{p}(n,H)$ denote the maximum value of $e_{p}(G)$ taken over all graphs with $n$ vertices that do not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Clearly, $t_{1}(n,H)$ is twice the Turán number of $H$. In this paper we consider the case $p>1$. For some graphs $H$ we obtain exact results, for some others we can obtain asymptotically tight upper and lower bounds, and many interesting cases remain open.

We study the congruence lattice of the poset of regions of a hyperplane arrangement, with particular emphasis on the weak order on a finite Coxeter group. Our starting point is a theorem from a previous paper which gives a geometric description of the poset of join-irreducibles of the congruence lattice of the poset of regions in terms of certain polyhedral decompositions of the hyperplanes. For a finite Coxeter system (W,S) and a subset K of S, let η_K:w \mapsto w_K be the projection onto the parabolic subgroup W_K. We show that the fibers of η_K constitute the smallest lattice congruence with 1\equiv s for every s\in(S-K). We give an algorithm for determining the congruence lattice of the weak order for any finite Coxeter group and for a finite Coxeter group of type A or B we define a directed graph on subsets or signed subsets such that the transitive closure of the directed graph is the poset of join-irreducibles of the congruence lattice of the weak order.

We consider the vanishing ideal of an arrangement of linear subspaces in a vector space and investigate when this ideal can be generated by products of linear forms. We introduce a combinatorial construction (blocker duality) which yields such generators in cases with a lot of combinatorial structure, and we present the examples that motivated our work. We give a construction which produces all elements of this type in the vanishing ideal of the arrangement. This leads to an algorithm for deciding if the ideal is generated by products of linear forms. We also consider generic arrangements of points in ${\bf P}^2$ and lines in ${\bf P}^3.$
A finiteness theorem for Markov bases of hierarchical models
We show that the complexity of the Markov bases of multidimensional tables stabilizes eventually if a single table dimension is allowed to vary. In particular, if this table dimension is beyond a computable bound, the Markov bases consist of elements of Markov bases of smaller tables. We give an explicit formula for this bound in terms of Graver bases. We also compute these Markov and Graver complexities for all $K \times 2 \times 2 \times 2 $ tables.

We solve the long-standing open problem of classifying all 3-(v,k,1) designs with a flag-transitive group of automorphisms (cf. A. Delandtsheer, Geom. Dedicata 41 (1992), p. 147; and in: "Handbook of Incidence Geometry", ed. by F. Buekenhout, Elsevier Science, Amsterdam, 1995, p. 273; but presumably dating back to 1965). Our result relies on the classification of the finite 2-transitive permutation groups.
