Cone and constrained colorful Carathéodory Theorems
Holmsen proved in 2016 a generalization of the classical colorful Caratheodory theorem in which a matroid imposes additional constraints on the desired colorful transversal. His approach also works in the more general setting of oriented matroids, rather than relying directly on convex hulls. In this paper, we extend these ideas in several directions. First, we study which colorful Caratheodory-type results remain valid when convex cones replace convex hulls, as well as analogous modifications in the oriented matroid setting. Second, we consider variants in which the additional constraint on the transversal is not encoded by a matroid. This leads to new extensions of the classical Tverberg theorem. Our approach is topological, following the methods of Holmsen, and Kalai and Meshulam, on which it builds. The key idea is to analyze homology groups of simplicial complexes that encode colorful Caratheodory-type phenomena, such as the support complex of an oriented matroid. In particular, one shows that these complexes are (near-)d-Leray. We extend this analysis by carrying out more detailed homology computations for these complexes, with the aim of enabling further and more refined applications of the method.
Facet volumes of polytopes
In this paper, motivated by the work of Edelman and Strang, we show that for fixed integers $d\geq 2$ and $n\geq d+1$ the configuration space of all facet volume vectors of all $d$-polytopes in $\mathbb R^{d}$ with $n$ facets is a full dimensional cone in $\mathbb R^{n}$. In particular, for tetrahedra ($d=3$ and $n=4$) this is a cone over a regular octahedron. Our proof is based on a novel configuration space / test map scheme which uses topological methods for finding solutions of a problem, and tools of differential geometry to identify solutions with the desired properties. Furthermore, our results open a possibility for the study of realization spaces of all $d$-polytopes in $\mathbb R^{d}$ with $n$ facets by the methods of algebraic topology.

Plus minus analogues for affine Tverberg type results
The classical 1966 theorem of Tverberg with its numerous variations was and still is a motivating force behind many important developments in convex and computational geometry as well as the testing ground for methods from equivariant algebraic topology. In 2018, Bárány and Soberón presented a new variation, the "Tverberg plus minus theorem." In this paper, we give a new proof of the Tverberg plus minus theorem, by using a projective transformation. The same tool allows us to derive plus minus analogues of all known affine Tverberg type results. In particular, we prove a plus minus analogue of the optimal colored Tverberg theorem.
Cutting a part from many measures

Holmsen, Kynčl and Valculescu recently conjectured that if a finite set $X$ with $\ell n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that is colored by $m$ different colors can be partitioned into $n$ subsets of $\ell$ points each, such that each subset contains points of at least $d$ different colors, then there exists such a partition of $X$ with the additional property that the convex hulls of the $n$ subsets are pairwise disjoint. We prove a continuous analogue of this conjecture, generalized so that each subset contains points of at least $c$ different colors, where we also allow $c$ to be greater than $d$. Furthermore, we give lower bounds on the fraction of the points each of the subsets contains from $c$ different colors. For example, when $n\geq 2$, $d\geq 2$, $c\geq d$ with $m\geq n(c-d)+d$ are integers, and $μ_1, \dots, μ_m$ are $m$ positive finite absolutely continuous measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$, we prove that there exists a partition of $\mathbb{R}^d$ into $n$ convex pieces which equiparts the measures $μ_1, \dots, μ_{d-1}$, and in addition every piece of the partition has positive measure with respect to at least $c$ of the measures $μ_1, \dots, μ_m$.

Thieves can make sandwiches

We prove a common generalization of the Ham Sandwich theorem and Alon's Necklace Splitting theorem. Our main results show the existence of fair distributions of $m$ measures in $R^d$ among $r$ thieves using roughly $mr/d$ convex pieces, even in the cases when $m$ is larger than the dimension. The main proof relies on a construction of a geometric realization of the topological join of two spaces of partitions of $R^d$ into convex parts, and the computation of the Fadell-Husseini ideal valued index of the resulting spaces.
Tverberg-type theorems for matroids: A counterexample and a proof
Bárány, Kalai, and Meshulam recently obtained a topological Tverberg-type theorem for matroids, which guarantees multiple coincidences for continuous maps from a matroid complex to d-dimensional Euclidean space, if the matroid has sufficiently many disjoint bases. They make a conjecture on the connectivity of k-fold deleted joins of a matroid with many disjoint bases, which would yield a much tighter result - but we provide a counterexample already for the case of k=2, where a tight Tverberg-type theorem would be a topological Radon theorem for matroids. Nevertheless, we prove the topological Radon theorem for the counterexample family of matroids by an index calculation, despite the failure of the connectivity-based approach.
Convex equipartitions of colored point sets
Published in Discrete and Computational Geometry 61 (2019), 355-363 • View PublicationBIB
We show that any $d$-colored set of points in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$ can be partitioned into $n$ subsets with disjoint convex hulls such that the set of points and all color classes are partitioned as evenly as possible. This extends results by Holmsen, Kynčl & Valculescu (2017) and establishes a special case of their general conjecture. Our proof utilizes a result obtained independently by Soberón and by Karasev in 2010, on simultaneous equipartitions of $d$ continuous measures in $\mathbb{R}^d$ by $n$ convex regions. This gives a convex partition of $\mathbb{R}^d$ with the desired properties, except that points may lie on the boundaries of the regions. In order to resolve the ambiguous assignment of these points, we set up a network flow problem. The equipartition of the continuous measures gives a fractional flow. The existence of an integer flow then yields the desired partition of the point set.
A center transversal theorem for an improved Rado depth
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry 60:2 (2018), 406-419 • View PublicationBIB
A celebrated result of Dol'nikov, and of Živaljević and Vrećica, asserts that for every collection of $m$ measures $μ_1,\dots,μ_m$ on the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^{n + m - 1}$ there exists a projection onto an $n$-dimensional vector subspace $Γ$ with a point in it at depth at least $\tfrac{1}{n + 1}$ with respect to each associated $n$-dimensional marginal measure $Γ_*μ_1,\dots,Γ_*μ_m$. In this paper we consider a natural extension of this result and ask for a minimal dimension of a Euclidean space in which one can require that for any collection of $m$ measures there exists a vector subspace $Γ$ with a point in it at depth slightly greater than $\tfrac{1}{n + 1}$ with respect to each $n$-dimensional marginal measure. In particular, we prove that if the required depth is $\tfrac{1}{n + 1} + \tfrac{1}{3(n + 1)^3}$ then the increase in the dimension of the ambient space is a linear function in both $m$ and $n$.

Beyond the Borsuk-Ulam theorem: The topological Tverberg story
Bárány's "topological Tverberg conjecture" from 1976 states that any continuous map of an $N$-simplex $Δ_N$ to $\mathbb{R}^d$, for $N\ge(d+1)(r-1)$, maps points from $r$ disjoint faces in $Δ_N$ to the same point in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The proof of this result for the case when $r$ is a prime, as well as some colored version of the same result, using the results of Borsuk-Ulam and Dold on the non-existence of equivariant maps between spaces with a free group action, were main topics of Matoušek's 2003 book "Using the Borsuk-Ulam theorem." In this paper we show how advanced equivariant topology methods allow one to go beyond the prime case of the topological Tverberg conjecture. First we explain in detail how equivariant cohomology tools (employing the Borel construction, comparison of Serre spectral sequences, Fadell-Husseini index, etc.) can be used to prove the topological Tverberg conjecture whenever $r$ is a prime power. Our presentation includes a number of improved proofs as well as new results, such as a complete determination of the Fadell-Husseini index of chessboard complexes in the prime case. Then we introduce the "constraint method," which applied to suitable "unavoidable complexes" yields a great variety of variations and corollaries to the topological Tverberg theorem, such as the "colored" and the "dimension-restricted" (Van Kampen-Flores type) versions. Both parts have provided crucial components to the recent spectacular counter-examples in high dimensions for the case when $r$ is not a prime power.
The topological transversal Tverberg theorem plus constraints
In this paper we use the strength of the constraint method in combination with a generalized Borsuk-Ulam type theorem and a cohomological intersection lemma to show how one can obtain many new topological transversal theorems of Tverberg type. In particular, we derive a topological generalized transversal Van Kampen-Flores theorem and a topological transversal weak colored Tverberg theorem.
Polynomial partitioning for several sets of varieties
We give a new, systematic proof for a recent result of Larry Guth and thus also extend the result to a setting with several families of varieties: For any integer $D\geq 1$ and any collection of sets $Γ_1,\ldots,Γ_j$ of low-degree $k$-dimensional varieties in $\mathbb{R}^n$ there exists a non-zero polynomial $p\in\mathbb{R}[X_1,\ldots,X_n]$ of degree at most $D$ so that each connected component of $\mathbb{R}^n{\setminus}Z(p)$ intersects $O(jD^{k-n}|Γ_i|)$ varieties of $Γ_i$, simultaneously for every $1\leq i\leq j$. For $j=1$ we recover the original result by Guth. Our proof, via an index calculation in equivariant cohomology, shows how the degrees of the polynomials used for partitioning are dictated by the topology, namely by the Euler class being given in terms of a top Dickson polynomial.
Barycenters of Polytope Skeleta and Counterexamples to the Topological Tverberg Conjecture, via Constraints

Using the authors' 2014 "constraints method," we give a short proof for a 2015 result of Dobbins on representations of a point in a polytope as the barycenter of points in a skeleton, and show that the "r-fold Whitney trick" of Mabillard and Wagner (2014/2015) implies that the Topological Tverberg Conjecture for r-fold intersections fails dramatically for all r that are not prime powers.
Hyperplane mass partitions via relative equivariant obstruction theory
Published in Documenta Mathematica 21 (2016), 735-771 • Search Publication
The Grünbaum-Hadwiger-Ramos hyperplane mass partition problem was introduced by Grünbaum (1960) in a special case and in general form by Ramos (1996). It asks for the "admissible" triples $(d,j,k)$ such that for any $j$ masses in $\mathbb{R}^d$ there are $k$ hyperplanes that cut each of the masses into $2^k$ equal parts. Ramos' conjecture is that the Avis-Ramos necessary lower bound condition $dk\ge j(2^k-1)$ is also sufficient. We develop a "join scheme" for this problem, such that non-existence of an $G_k$-equivariant map between spheres $(S^d)^{*k} \rightarrow S(W_k\oplus U_k^{\oplus j})$ that extends a test map on the subspace of $(S^d)^{*k}$ where the hyperoctahedral group $G_k$ acts non-freely, implies that $(d,j,k)$ is admissible. For the sphere $(S^d)^{*k}$ we obtain a very efficient regular cell decomposition, whose cells get a combinatorial interpretation with respect to measures on a modified moment curve. This allows us to apply relative equivariant obstruction theory successfully, even in the case when the difference of dimensions of the spheres $(S^d)^{*k}$ and $S(W_k\oplus U_k^{\oplus j})$ is greater than one. The evaluation of obstruction classes leads to counting problems for concatenated Gray codes. Thus we give a rigorous, unified treatment of the previously announced cases of the Grünbaum-Hadwiger-Ramos problem, as well as a number of new cases for Ramos' conjecture.
Barycenters of points that are constrained to a polytope skeleton
We give a short and simple proof of a recent result of Dobbins that any point in an $nd$-polytope is the barycenter of $n$ points in the $d$-skeleton. This new proof builds on the constraint method that we recently introduced to prove Tverberg-type results.
Tverberg plus constraints
Published in Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 46 (5), 953-967 (2014) • View PublicationBIB
Many of the strengthenings and extensions of the topological Tverberg theorem can be derived with surprising ease directly from the original theorem: For this we introduce a proof technique that combines a concept of "Tverberg unavoidable subcomplexes" with the observation that Tverberg points that equalize the distance from such a subcomplex can be obtained from maps to an extended target space. Thus we obtain simple proofs for many variants of the topological Tverberg theorem, such as the colored Tverberg theorem of Zivaljevic and Vrecica (1992). We also get a new strengthened version of the generalized van Kampen-Flores theorem by Sarkaria (1991) and Volovikov (1996), an affine version of their "j-wise disjoint" Tverberg theorem, and a topological version of Soberon's (2013) result on Tverberg points with equal barycentric coordinates.
Equivariant Topology of Configuration Spaces

We study the Fadell-Husseini index of the configuration space F(R^d,n) with respect to different subgroups of the symmetric group S_n. For p prime and d>0, we completely determine Index_{Z/p}(F(R^d,p);F_p) and partially describe Index{(Z/p)^k}(F(R^d,p^k);F_p). In this process we obtain results of independent interest, including: (1) an extended equivariant Goresky-MacPherson formula, (2) a complete description of the top homology of the partition lattice Pi_p as an F_p[Z_p]-module, and (3) a generalized Dold theorem for elementary abelian groups. The results on the Fadell-Husseini index yield a new proof of the Nandakumar & Ramana Rao conjecture for a prime. For n=p^k a prime power, we compute the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category cat(F(R^d,n)/S_n)=(d-1)(n-1). Moreover, we extend coincidence results related to the Borsuk-Ulam theorem, as obtained by Cohen & Connett, Cohen & Lusk, and Karasev & Volovikov.

Convex Equipartitions via Equivariant Obstruction Theory
We describe a regular cell complex model for the configuration space F(\R^d,n). Based on this, we use Equivariant Obstruction Theory to prove the prime power case of the conjecture by Nandakumar and Ramana Rao that every polygon can be partitioned into n convex parts of equal area and perimeter.
A tight colored Tverberg theorem for maps to manifolds
Published in Topology and its Applications 158(12), 2011, 1445-1452 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that any continuous map of an N-dimensional simplex Delta_N with colored vertices to a d-dimensional manifold M must map r points from disjoint rainbow faces of Delta_N to the same point in M: For this we have to assume that N \geq (r-1)(d+1), no r vertices of Delta_N get the same color, and our proof needs that r is a prime. A face of Delta_N is a rainbow face if all vertices have different colors. This result is an extension of our recent "new colored Tverberg theorem", the special case of M=R^d. It is also a generalization of Volovikov's 1996 topological Tverberg theorem for maps to manifolds, which arises when all color classes have size 1 (i.e., without color constraints); for this special case Volovikov's proof, as well as ours, work when r is a prime power.
Optimal bounds for the colored Tverberg problem
Published in J. Eur. Math. Soc. 17 (2015), no. 4, 739-754 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a "Tverberg type" multiple intersection theorem. It strengthens the prime case of the original Tverberg theorem from 1966, as well as the topological Tverberg theorem of Barany et al. (1980), by adding color constraints. It also provides an improved bound for the (topological) colored Tverberg problem of Barany & Larman (1992) that is tight in the prime case and asymptotically optimal in the general case. The proof is based on relative equivariant obstruction theory.

The ideal-valued index for a dihedral group action, and mass partition by two hyperplanes
We compute the complete Fadell-Husseini index of the 8 element dihedral group D_8 acting on S^d \times S^d, both for F_2 and for integer coefficients. This establishes the complete goup cohomology lower bounds for the two hyperplane case of Gr"unbaum's 1960 mass partition problem: For which d and j can any j arbitrary measures be cut into four equal parts each by two suitably-chosen hyperplanes in R^d? In both cases, we find that the ideal bounds are not stronger than previously established bounds based on one of the maximal abelian subgroups of D_8.
