Maximum number of edge colorings avoiding rainbow copies of $K_4$
In this paper we show that for $r\geq 12$ and any sufficiently large $n$-vertex graph $G$ the number of $r$-edge-colorings of $G$ with no rainbow $K_4$ is at most $r^{ex(n,K_4)}$, where $ex(n,K_4)$ denotes the Turán number of $K_4$. Moreover, $G$ attains equality if and only if it is the Turán graph $T_3(n)$. The bound on the number of colors $r\geq 12$ is best possible. It improves upon a result of H. Lefmann, D.A. Nolibos, and the second author who showed the same result for $r \geq 5434$ and it confirms a conjecture by Gupta, Pehova, Powierski and Staden.

Block diagonally symmetric lozenge tilings
We introduce a new symmetry class of both boxed plane partitions and lozenge tilings of a hexagon, called the $\mathbf{r}$-block diagonal symmetry class, where $\mathbf{r}$ is an $n$-tuple of non-negative integers. We prove that the tiling generating function of this symmetry class under a certain weight assignment is given by a simple product formula. As a consequence, the volume generating function of $\mathbf{r}$-block symmetric plane partitions is obtained. Additionally, we consider $(\mathbf{r},\mathbf{r^{\prime}})$-block diagonally symmetric lozenge tilings by embedding the hexagon into a cylinder and present an identity for the signed enumeration of this symmetry class in specific cases. Two methods are provided to study this symmetry class: (1) the method of non-intersecting lattice paths with a modification, and (2) interpreting weighted lozenge tilings algebraically as (skew) Schur polynomials and applying the dual Pieri rule.

Boundary measurements of positive networks on a cylinder of maximal rank 2 and 3
Boundary measurement matrices associated to networks on a plane correspond to certain totally nonnegative Grassmannians as shown previously by A. Postnikov. In this paper, we look to generalize this result by categorizing the boundary measurements associated to networks on a cylinder of maximal rank 2 and 3. In particular, we show that the maximal rank 3 matrices associated to networks on a cylinder are precisely the matrices in which every odd-dimensional minor is nonnegative.

Invariant theory for wreath products acting on superpolynomials
This paper considers a finite group $G$ acting linearly on the variables $V$ of a polynomial algebra, or an exterior algebra, or superpolynomial algebra with both commuting and anticommuting variables. In this setting, the Hilbert series for the $G$-invariant subalgebra turns out to determine the analogous Hilbert series for the wreath product $P[G]$ acting on $V^n$ for any permutation group $P$ inside the symmetric group $S_n$ on $n$ letters. This leads to a structural result: one can collate the direct sum for all $n$ of the $S_n[G]$-invariant subalgebras to form a graded ring via an external shuffle product, whose structure turns out to be a superpolynomial algebra generated by the $G$-invariants. A parallel statement holds for the direct sum of all $S_n[G]$-antiinvariants, which forms a graded ring via an external signed shuffle product, isomorphic to the superexterior algebra generated by the $G$-invariants.

The chromatic symmetric function of graphs glued at a single vertex
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe how the chromatic symmetric function of two graphs glued at a single vertex can be expressed as a matrix multiplication using certain information of the two individual graphs. We then prove new $e$-positivity results by using a connection between forest triples, defined by the first author, and Hikita's probabilities associated to standard Young tableaux. Specifically, we prove that gluing a sequence of unit interval graphs and cycles results in an $e$-positive graph. We also prove $e$-positivity for a graph obtained by gluing the first and last vertices of such a sequence. This generalizes $e$-positivity of cycle-chord graphs and supports Ellzey's conjectured $e$-positivity for proper circular arc digraphs.
Three algorithmic approaches to the general position problem
Published in Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 113 (2026) 1-9 • View PublicationBIB
If $G$ is a graph, then $X\subseteq V(G)$ is a general position set if for every two vertices $v,u\in X$ and every shortest $(u,v)$-path $P$, it holds that no inner vertex of $P$ lies in $X$. In this note we propose three algorithms to compute a largest general position set in $G$: an integer linear programming algorithm, a genetic algorithm, and a simulated annealing algorithm. These approaches are supported by examples from different areas of graph theory.
Obstructions for homomorphisms to odd cycles in series-parallel graphs
For a graph $H$, an $H$-colouring of a graph $G$ is a vertex map $φ:V(G) \to V(H)$ such that adjacent vertices are mapped to adjacent vertices. A graph $G$ is $C_{2k+1}$-critical if $G$ has no $C_{2k+1}$-colouring but every proper subgraph of $G$ has a $C_{2k+1}$-colouring. We prove a structural characterisation of $C_{2k+1}$-critical graphs when $k \geq 2$. In the case that $k = 2$, we use the aforementioned charazterisation to show a $C_3$-free series-parallel graph $G$ has a $C_5$-colouring if either $G$ has neither $C_8$ nor $C_{10}$, or $G$ has no two $5$-cycles sharing a vertex.

The $g$-good-neighbor diagnosability of product networks under the PMC model
Published • View PublicationBIB
The concept of neighbor connectivity originated from the assessment of the subversion of espionage networks caused by underground resistance movements, and it has now been applied to measure the disruption of networks caused by cascading failures through neighbors. In this paper, we give two necessary and sufficient conditions of the existance of $g$-good-neighbor diagnosability. We introduce a new concept called $g$-good neighbor cut-component number (gc number for short), which has close relation with $g$-good-neighbor diagnosability. Sharp lower and upper bounds of the gc number of general graphs in terms of the $g$-good neighbor connectivity is given, which provides a formula to compute the $g$-good-neighbor diagnosability for general graphs (therefore for Cartesian product graphs). As their applications, we get the exact values or bounds for the gc numbers and $g$-good-neighbor diagnosability of grid, torus networks and generalized cubes.

The maximum spectral radius of $θ_{2,2,3}$-free graphs with given size
Published • View PublicationBIB
A theta graph $θ_{r,p,q}$ is the graph obtained by connecting two distinct vertices with three internally disjoint paths of length $r,p,q$, where $q\geq p\geq r\geq1$ and $p\geq2$. A graph is $θ_{r,p,q}$-free if it does not contain $θ_{r,p,q}$ as a subgraph. The maximum spectral radius of $θ_{1,p,q}$-free graphs with given size has been determined for any $q\geq p\geq2$. Zhai, Lin and Shu [Spectral extrema of graphs with fixed size: cycles and complete bipartite graphs, European J. Combin. 95 (2021) 103322] characterized the extremal graph with the maximum spectral radius of $θ_{2,2,2}$-free graphs having $m$ edges. In this paper, we consider the maximum spectral radius of $θ_{2,2,3}$-free graphs with size $m$ and characterize the extremal graph.

A problem of Erdős and Hajnal on paths with equal-degree endpoints
We address a problem posed by Erdős and Hajnal in 1991, proving that for all $n \geq 600$, every $(2n+1)$-vertex graph with at least $n^2 + n + 1$ edges contains two vertices of equal degree connected by a path of length three. The complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n+1}$ demonstrates that this edge bound is sharp. We further establish an analogous result for graphs with even order and investigate several related extremal problems.

$f$-Diophantine sets over finite fields via quasi-random hypergraphs from multivariate polynomials
We investigate $f$-Diophantine sets over finite fields via new explicit constructions of families of quasi-random hypergraphs from multivariate polynomials. In particular, our construction not only offers a systematic method for constructing quasi-random hypergraphs but also provides a unified framework for studying various hypergraphs arising from multivariate polynomials over finite fields, including Paley sum hypergraphs, and hypergraphs derived from Diophantine tuples and their generalizations. We derive an asymptotic formula for the number of $k$-Diophantine $m$-tuples, answering a question of Hammonds et al., and study some related questions for $f$-Diophantine sets, extending and improving several recent works. We also sharpen a classical estimate of Chung and Graham on even partial octahedrons in Paley sum hypergraphs.

Valuative Invariants of Catalan Matroids
We decompose the indicator function of each $(a, b)$-Catalan matroid polytope as a weighted sum of indicator function of matroid polytopes that correspond to direct sums of uniform matroids. Catalan matroids lie in the interior of the convex hull of direct sums of uniform matroids in the polytope of all matroids introduced by Ferroni and Fink. Moreover, we describe combinatorially the coefficients of the convex combination of direct sums of uniform matroid corresponding to an $(a,b)$-Catalan matroid. In particular, this allows us to derive explicit formulas for arbitrary valuative invariants of $(a, b)$-Catalan matroids. Among other applications, we prove that $(a,b)$-Catalan matroids are Ehrhart positive, and we find formulas for the Kazhdan--Lusztig invariants of these matroids.

Spanning trees and their relations in Galois covers
This paper studies the relation among the number of spanning trees of intermediate graphs in a Galois cover, building on results for $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^m$-covers previously established by Hammer, Mattman, Sands, and Vallières. We generalize their results to arbitrary finite Galois covers. Using the Ihara zeta function and the Artin--Ihara $L$-function, we prove two formulas which are graph-theoretic analogues of Kuroda's formula and the Brauer--Kuroda relations in algebraic number theory. Furthermore, we prove that a spanning tree formula does not exist if the Galois group is cyclic.

Zigzags, contingency tables, and quotient rings
Let $\mathbf{x}_{k \times p}$ be a $k \times p$ matrix of variables and let $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times p}]$ be the polynomial ring in these variables. Given two weak compositions $α,β\models_0 n$ of lengths $\ell(α) = k$ and $\ell(β) = p$, we study the ideal $I_{α,β} \subseteq \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times \ell}]$ generated by row sums, column sums, monomials in row $i$ of degree $> α_i$, and monomials in column $j$ of degree $> β_j$. We prove results connecting algebraic properties of the quotient ring $R_{α,β} := \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times \ell}]/I_{α,β}$ with the set $C_{α,β}$ of $α,β$-contingency tables. The standard monomial basis of $R_{α,β}$ with respect to a diagonal term order is encoded by the matrix-ball avatar of the RSK correspondence. We describe the Hilbert series of $R_{α,β}$ in terms of a zigzag statistic on contingency tables. The ring $R_{α,β}$ carries a graded action of the product $\mathrm{Stab}(α) \times \mathrm{Stab}(β)$ of symmetry groups of the sequences $α= (α_1,\dots,α_k)$ and $β= (β_1,\dots,β_p)$; we describe how to calculate the isomorphism type of this graded action. Our analysis regards the set $C_{α,β}$ as a locus in the affine space $\mathrm{Mat}_{k \times p}(\mathbb{F})$ and applies orbit harmonics to this locus.
Fibonacci-like partitions and their associated piecewise-defined permutations
In this paper we introduce a family of partitions of the set of natural numbers, Fibonacci-like partitions. In particular, we introduce a Fibonacci-like partition in a number of parts corresponding to the Fibonacci numbers, the standard Fibonacci-like partitions of the first kind. That partition refines the well-known partition in two parts associated to the Wythoff sequences. In a similar way, we introduce another family of Fibonacci-like partitions of the natural numbers, with an initial segment removed, in a number of parts which also follows the Fibonacci sequence, the standard Fibonacci-like partitions of the second kind. We study some piecewise-defined permutations over Fibonacci-like partitions, which give both torsion-free and torsion elements in the symmetric group over the set of natural numbers. We give an application of Fibonacci-like partitions to the study of a sequence analyzed by A. Shapovalov and by B.J. Venkatachala. We give also a generalization of the mentioned sequence, involving techniques that are not related to Fibbonaci numbers nor Beatty sequences, obtaining an infinite family of sequences that we conjecture that produce an infinite orthogonal array in which the number of symbols, trials and factors is countable infinite, and having an automorphism group isomorphic to Z acting regularly on the symbol set.

Many antipodes implies many neighbors
Suppose $\left\{x_1, \dots, x_n\right\} \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ is a set of $n$ points in the plane with diameter $\leq 1$, meaning $\|x_i - x_j\| \leq 1$ for all $1 \leq i,j \leq n$. We show that if there are many `antipodes', these are pairs of points of with distance $\geq 1-\varepsilon$, then there are many neighbors, these are pairs of points that are distance $\leq \varepsilon$. More precisely, we prove that for some universal $c>0$, $$ \# \left\{(i,j): \|x_i - x_j\| \leq \varepsilon\right\} \geq \frac{c \cdot \varepsilon^{3/4}}{\left( \log \varepsilon^{-1} \right)^{1/4}}\cdot \# \left\{(i,j): \|x_i - x_j\| \geq 1- \varepsilon\right\}.$$ The inequality is very easy too prove with factor $\varepsilon^2$ and easy with $\varepsilon$. The optimal rate might be $\varepsilon^{1/2}$ which is attained by several examples.

Orientations of cycles in digraphs of high chromatic number and high minimum out-degree
We characterize all orientations of cycles $C$ for which for every fixed $\varepsilon > 0$ there exists a constant $c \geq 1$ such that every digraph $D$ without loops or parallel arcs with $χ(D) \geq c$ and minimum out-degree at least $\varepsilon |V(D)|$ contains $C$ as a subdigraph. This generalizes a result of Thomassen.

From semi-total to equitable total colorings
Independently posed by Behzad and Vizing, the Total Coloring Conjecture asserts that the total chromatic number of a simple connected graph $G$ is either $Δ(G)+1$ or $Δ(G)+2$, where $Δ(G)$ is the largest degree of any vertex of $G$. To decide whether a cubic graph $G$ has total chromatic number $Δ(G)+1$, even for bipartite cubic graphs, is NP-hard. The resulting problems and research persist even for total colorings that are equitable, namely with the cardinalities of the color classes differing at most by 1. Williams and Holroyd gave a new condition to solve total coloring problems via the introduction of semi-total colorings. We focus on how to obtain equitable total colorings of symmetric cubic graphs and cage graphs by means of a variation of Kempe'a 1879 graph-coloring algorithm. Such variation takes semi-total colorings to equitable ones.

Unavoidable cycle-contraction minors of large $2$-connected graphs
It is well known that every sufficiently large connected graph has, as an induced subgraph, $K_n$, $K_{1,n}$, or an $n$-vertex path. A 2023 paper of Allred, Ding, and Oporowski identified a set of unavoidable induced subgraphs of sufficiently large $2$-connected graphs. In this paper, we establish a dual version of this theorem by focusing on the minors obtained by contracting cycles.

The partition of $PG(2,q^3)$ arising from an order 3 planar collineation
Let $φ$ be a collineation of order 3 acting on $PG(2,q^3)$ whose fixed points are exactly an $\mathbb F_q$-plane $π_q$. Let $T$ be a point whose orbit under $φ$ is a triangle and let $S_G$ be the subgroup of $PGL(3,q^3)$ that fixes setwise the $\mathbb F_q$-plane $π_q$ and fixes setwise the line $T^φT^{φ^2}$. The point orbits of $S_G$ form a partition of the points of $PG(2,q^3)$ and consist of: the singletons $T,T^φ, T^{φ^2}$; scattered linear sets on the sides of the triangle $T T^φT^{φ^2}$; and $\mathbb F_q$-planes. This article studies the structure of this partition, looking at maps that permute elements of the partition. The motivation in studying this partition lies in its application to the construction of the Figueroa projective plane, and the article concludes with a characterisation in this setting.
