Evolutive sandpiles
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Abelian sandpile model was the first example of a self-organized critical system studied by Bak, Tang and Wiesenfeld. The dynamics of the sandpiles occur when the grains topple over a graph. In this study, we allow the graph to evolve over time and change the topology at each stage. This turns out in the occurrence of phenomena impossible in the classical sandpile models. For instance, configurations over evolutive graphs that are always unstable. We also experiment with the stabilization of configurations with a large number of grains at the center over evolutive graphs, this allows us to obtain interesting fractals. Finally, we obtain some power laws associated with some evolutive graphs.
On the rectilinear crossing number of complete balanced multipartite graphs and layered graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A rectilinear drawing of a graph is a drawing of the graph in the plane in which the edges are drawn as straight-line segments. The rectilinear crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of pairs of edges that cross over all rectilinear drawings of the graph. Let $n \ge r$ be positive integers. The graph $K_n^r$, is the complete $r$-partite graph on $n$ vertices, in which every set of the partition has at least $\lfloor n/r \rfloor$ vertices. The layered graph, $L_n^r$, is an $r$-partite graph on $n$ vertices, in which for every $1\le i \le r-1$, all the vertices in the $i$-th partition are adjacent to all the vertices in the $(i+1)$-th partition. In this paper, we give upper bounds on the rectilinear crossing numbers of $K_n^r$ and~$L_n^r$.

Quantum Advantage and CSP Complexity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Information-processing tasks modelled by homomorphisms between relational structures can witness quantum advantage when entanglement is used as a computational resource. We prove that the occurrence of quantum advantage is determined by the same type of algebraic structure (known as a minion) that captures the polymorphism identities of CSPs and, thus, CSP complexity. We investigate the connection between the minion of quantum advantage and other known minions controlling CSP tractability and width. In this way, we make use of complexity results from the algebraic theory of CSPs to characterise the occurrence of quantum advantage in the case of graphs, and to obtain new necessary and sufficient conditions in the case of arbitrary relational structures.
On multidimensional generalization of binary search
This work generalizes the binary search problem to a $d$-dimensional domain $S_1\times\cdots\times S_d$, where $S_i=\{0, 1, \ldots,n_i-1\}$ and $d\geq 1$, in the following way. Given $(t_1,\ldots,t_d)$, the target element to be found, the result of a comparison of a selected element $(x_1,\ldots,x_d)$ is the sequence of inequalities each stating that either $t_i < x_i$ or $t_i>x_i$, for $i\in\{1,\ldots,d\}$, for which at least one is correct, and the algorithm does not know the coordinate $i$ on which the correct direction to the target is given. Among other cases, we show asymptotically almost matching lower and upper bounds of the query complexity to be in $Ω(n^{d-1}/d)$ and $O(n^d)$ for the case of $n_i=n$. In particular, for fixed $d$ these bounds asymptotically do match. This problem is equivalent to the classical binary search in case of one dimension and shows interesting differences for higher dimensions. For example, if one would impose that each of the $d$ inequalities is correct, then the search can be completed in $\log_2\max\{n_1,\ldots,n_d\}$ queries. In an intermediate model when the algorithm knows which one of the inequalities is correct the sufficient number of queries is $\log_2(n_1\cdot\ldots\cdot n_d)$. The latter follows from a graph search model proposed by Emamjomeh-Zadeh et al. [STOC 2016].

Quadratic Pseudostable Hodge Integrals and Mumford's Relations
Published in Math. Z. 310, 38 (2025) • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies the relationship between quadratic Hodge classes on moduli spaces of pseudostable and stable curves given by the contraction morphism $\mathcal{T}.$ While Mumford relations do not hold in the pseudostable case, we show that one can express the (pullback via $\mathcal{T}$ of the) Chern classes of $\mathbb{E}\oplus \mathbb{E}^\vee$ solely in terms of descendants and strata classes. We organize the combinatorial structure of the pullback of products of two pseudostable $λ$ classes and obtain an explicit comparison of arbitrary pseudostable and stable quadratic Hodge integrals.

Type B Set partitions, an analogue of restricted growth functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this work, we study type B set partitions for a given specific positive integer $k$ defined over $\langle n\rangle=\{-n, -(n-1),\cdots -1,0,1,\cdots n-1,n\}$. We found a few generating functions of type B analogue for some of the set partition statistics defined by Wachs, White and Steingrimsson for partitions over positive integers $[n] =\{1,2,\cdots n\}$, both for standard and ordered set partitions respectively. We extended the idea of restricted growth functions utilized by Wachs and White for set partitions over $[n]$, in the scenario of $\langle n\rangle$ and called the analogue as Signed Restricted Growth Function (SRGF). We discussed analogues of major index for type B partitions in terms of SRGF. We found an analogue of Foata bijection and reduced matrix for type B set partitions as done by Sagan for set partitions of $[n]$ with sepcific number of blocks $k$. We conclude with some open questions regarding the type B analogue of some well known results already done in case of set partitions of $[n]$.
The Number of Spanning Trees in some Special Self-Similar Graphs
In this paper, we introduce two families of planar and self-similar graphs which have small-world properties. The constructed models are based on an iterative process where each step of a certain formulation of modules results in a final graph with a self-similar structure. The number of spanning trees of a graph is one of the most graph-theoretical parameters, where its applications range from the theory of networks to theoretical chemistry. Two explicit formulas are introduced for the number of spanning trees for the two models. With explicit formulas for some of their topological parameters as well.

Mixed volumes of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Our aim in this article is to compute the mixed volume of a matroid. We give two computations. The first one is based on the integration formula for complete fans given by Brion. The second computation is a step-by-step method using deletion of elements in the matroid as in Braden-Huh-Matherne-Proudfoot-Wang.

Maximal Mumford Curves from Planar Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A curve of genus g is maximal Mumford (MM) if it has g+1 ovals and g tropical cycles. We construct full-dimensional families of MM curves in the Hilbert scheme of canonical curves. This rests on first-order deformations of graph curves whose graph is planar.

A Mathematical Formalisation of the γ-contraction Problem
Networks play an ubiquitous role in computer science and real-world applications, offering multiple kind of information that can be retrieved with adequate methods. With the continuous growing in the amount of data available, networks are becoming larger day by day. Consequently, the tasks that were easily achievable on smaller networks, often becomes impractical on huge amount of data, either due to the high computational cost or due to the impracticality to visualise corresponding data. Using distinctive node features to group large amount of connected data into a limited number of clusters, hence represented by a representative per cluster, proves to be a valuable approach. The resulting contracted graphs are more manageable in size and can reveal previously hidden characteristics of the original networks. Furthermore, in many real-world use cases, a definition of cluster is intrinsic with the data, eventually obtained with the injection of some expert knowledge represent by a categorical function. Clusters then results in set of connected vertices taking the same values in a finite set C. In the recent literature, Lombardi and Onofri proposed a novel, fast, and easily parallelisable approach under the name of $γ$-contraction to contract a graph given a categorical function. In this work, we formally define such approach by providing a rigorous mathematical definition of the problem, which, to the best of our knowledge, was missing in the existing literature. Specifically, we explore the variadic nature of the contraction operation and use it to introduce the weaker version of the colour contraction, under the name of $β$-contraction, that the algorithmic solution exploits. We finally dive into the details of the algorithm and we provide a full assesment on its convergence complexity relying on two constructive proofs that deeply unveil its mode of operation.

The Generic Circular Triangle-Free Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce the generic circular triangle-free graph $\mathbb C_3$ and propose a finite axiomatization of its first order theory. In particular, our main results show that a countable graph $G$ embeds into $\mathbb C_3$ if and only if it is a $\{K_3, K_1 + 2K_2, K_1+C_5, C_6\}$-free graph. As a byproduct of this result, we obtain a geometric characterization of finite $\{K_3, K_1 + 2K_2, K_1+C_5, C_6\}$-free graphs, and the (finite) list of minimal obstructions of unit Helly circular-arc graphs with independence number strictly less than three. The circular chromatic number $χ_c(G)$ is a refinement of the classical chromatic number $χ(G)$. We construct $\mathbb C_3$ so that a graph $G$ has circular chromatic number strictly less than three if and only if $G$ maps homomorphically to $\mathbb C_3$. We build on our main results to show that $χ_c(G) < 3$ if and only if $G$ can be extended to a $\{K_3, K_1 + 2K_2, K_1+C_5, C_6\}$-free graph, and in turn, we use this result to reprove an old characterization of $χ_c(G) < 3$ due to Brandt (1999). Finally, we answer a question recently asked by Guzmán-Pro, Hell, and Hernández-Cruz by showing that the problem of deciding for a given finite graph $G$ whether $χ_c(G) < 3$ is NP-complete.

Infinite unrestricted sumsets of the form $B+B$ in sets with large density
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a set $A \subset \mathbb{N}$ we characterize in terms of its density when there exists an infinite set $B \subset \mathbb{N}$ and $t \in \{0,1\}$ such that $B+B \subset A-t$, where $B+B : =\{b_1+b_2\colon b_1,b_2 \in B\}$. Specifically, when the lower density $\underline{d}(A) >1/2$ or the upper density $\overline{d}(A)> 3/4$, the existence of such a set $B\subset \mathbb{N}$ and $t\in \{0,1\}$ is assured. Furthermore, whenever $\underline{d}(A) > 3/4$ or $\overline{d}(A)>5/6$, we show that the shift $t$ is unnecessary and we also provide examples to show that these bounds are sharp. Finally, we construct a syndetic three-coloring of the natural numbers that does not contain a monochromatic $B+B+t$ for any infinite set $B \subset \mathbb{N}$ and number $t \in \mathbb{N}$.

Minimum saturated graphs for unions of cliques
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $H$ be a fixed graph. A graph $G$ is called {\it $H$-saturated} if $H$ is not a subgraph of $G$ but the addition of any missing edge to $G$ results in an $H$-subgraph. The {\it saturation number} of $H$, denoted $sat(n,H)$, is the minimum number of edges over all $H$-saturated graphs of order $n$, and $Sat(n,H)$ denote the family of $H$-saturated graphs with $sat(n,H)$ edges and $n$ vertices. In this paper, we resolve a conjecture of Chen and Yuan in[Discrete Math. 347(2024)113868] by determining $Sat(n,K_p\cup (t-1)K_q)$ for every $2\le p\le q$ and $t\ge 2$.

Lifting maps between graphs to embeddings
Published in Essays on Topology: Dedicated to Valentin Poénaru, eds. L. Funar and A. Papadopoulos, Springer, Cham. (2025) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study conditions for the existence of an embedding $\widetilde{f} \colon P \to Q \times \mathbb{R}$ such that $f = \mathrm{pr}_Q \circ \widetilde{f}$, where $f \colon P \to Q$ is a piecewise linear map between polyhedra. Our focus is on non-degenerate maps between graphs, where non-degeneracy means that the preimages of points are finite sets. We introduce combinatorial techniques and establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the general case. Using these results, we demonstrate that the problem of the existence of a lifting reduces to testing the satisfiability of a 3-CNF formula. Additionally, we construct a counterexample to a result by V. Poénaru on lifting of smooth immersions to embeddings. Furthermore, by establishing connections between the stated problem and the approximability by embeddings, we deduce that, in the case of generic maps from a tree to a segment, a weaker condition becomes sufficient for the existence of a lifting.

Lefschetz properties of squarefree monomial ideals via Rees algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
The theory of Rees algebras of monomial ideals has been extensively studied, and as a consequence, many (sometimes partial) equivalences between algebraic properties of monomial ideals, and combinatorial properties of simplicial complexes and hypergraphs are known. In this paper we show how this theory can be used to find interesting examples in the theory of Lefschetz properties. We explore the consequences of known results from Lefschetz properties to the Rees algebras of squarefree monomial ideals, for example in the calculation of analytic spread. In particular, we show a connection between symbolic powers and $f$-vectors of simplicial complexes. This perspective leads us to a generalization of Postnikov's "mixed Eulerian numbers". We prove the positivity of such numbers in our setting.
On the $Q$-polynomial property of the full bipartite graph of a Hamming graph
The $Q$-polynomial property is an algebraic property of distance-regular graphs, that was introduced by Delsarte in his study of coding theory. Many distance-regular graphs admit the $Q$-polynomial property. Only recently the $Q$-polynomial property has been generalized to graphs that are not necessarily distance-regular. In [ J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 205:105872, 2024 ], it was shown that graphs arising from the Hasse diagrams of the so-called attenuated space posets are $Q$-polynomial. These posets could be viewed as $q$-analogs of the Hamming posets, which were not studied in [ J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 205:105872, 2024 ]. The main goal of this paper is to fill this gap by showing that the graphs arising from the Hasse diagrams of the Hamming posets are $Q$-polynomial.
