Block graphs - some general results and their equitable colorings
In this paper, we consider some general properties of block graphs as well as the equitable coloring problem in this class of graphs. In the first part we establish the relation between two structural parameters for general block graphs. We also give complete characterization of block graphs with given value of parameter $α_{\min}$. In the next part of the paper we confirm the hypothesis for some subclass of GLS block graphs in which the problem of EQUITABLE COLORING is unlikely to be polynomial time solvable. We give also an equitable $(n+2)$-algorithm for all GLS block graphs. As a by product we prove that the equitable chromatic spectrum for the subclass of GLS block graphs is gap-free.

Generating functions for fixed points of the Mullineux map
Published • View PublicationBIB
Mullineux defined an involution on the set of $e$-regular partitions of $n$. When $e=p$ is prime, these partitions label irreducible symmetric group modules in characteristic $p$. Mullineux's conjecture, since proven, was that this ``Mullineux map" described the effect on the labels of taking the tensor product with the one-dimensional signature representation. Counting irreducible modules fixed by this tensor product is related to counting irreducible modules for the alternating group $A_n$ in prime characteristic. In 1991, Andrews and Olsson worked out the generating function counting fixed points of Mullineux's map when $e=p$ is an odd prime (providing evidence in support of Mullineux's conjecture). In 1998, Bessenrodt and Olsson counted the fixed points in a $p$-block of weight $w$. We extend both results to arbitrary $e$, and determine the corresponding generating functions. When $e$ is odd but not prime the extension is immediate, while $e$ even requires additional work and the results, which are different, have not appeared in the literature.

Signed Mahonian Polynomials on Derangements in Classical Weyl Groups
Published in Europ. J. Combin. 124 (2025) 104083 • View PublicationBIB
The polynomial of the major index ${\rm maj}_W (σ)$ over the subset $T$ of the Coxeter group $W$ is called the Mahonian polynomial over $T$, where ${\rm maj}_W (σ)$ is a Mahonian statistic of an element $σ\in T$, whereas the polynomial of the major index ${\rm maj}_W (σ)$ with the sign $(-1)^{\ell_W(σ)}$ over the subset $T$ is referred to as the signed Mahonian polynomial over $T$, where ${\ell_W(σ)}$ is the length of $σ\in T$. Gessel, Wachs, and Chow established the formulas for the Mahonian polynomials over the sets of derangements in the symmetric group $S_n$ and the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$. By extending Wachs' approach and employing a refinement of Stanley's shuffle theorem established in our recent paper, we derive the formula for the Mahonian polynomials over the set of derangements in the even-signed permutation group $D_n$. This completes a picture which is now known for all the classical Weyl groups. Gessel-Simion, Adin-Gessel-Roichman, and Biagioli previously established formulas for the signed Mahonian polynomials over the classical Weyl groups. Building upon their formulas, we derive the formulas for the signed Mahonian polynomials over the set of derangements in classical Weyl groups. As applications of the formulas for the (signed) Mahonian polynomials over the sets of derangements in the classical Weyl groups, we obtain enumerative formulas of the number of derangements in classical Weyl groups with even lengths.

Partial-dual polynomial as a framed weight system
Published in Communications in Mathematics, Volume 31 (2023), Issue 3 (Special issue: in memory of Sergei Duzhin) (April 22, 2024) cm:13020 • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Chmutov proved that the partial-dual polynomial considered as a function on chord diagrams satisfies the four-term relations. In this paper, we show that this function on framed chord diagrams also satisfies the four-term relations, i.e., is a framed weight system.

The generalizations of Hamiltonian in oriented graphs
An oriented graph is an orientation of a simple graph. In 2009, Keevash, Kühn and Osthus proved that every sufficiently large oriented graph $D$ of order $n$ with $(3n-4)/8$ is Hamiltonian. Later, Kelly, Kühn and Osthus showed that it is also pancyclic. Inspired by this, we show that for any given constant $t$ and positive integer partition $n = n_1 + \cdots + n_t$, if $D$ is an oriented graph on $n$ vertices with minimum semidegree at least $(3n-4)/8$, then it contains $t$ disjoint cycles of lengths $n_1,\ldots , n_t$. Also, we determine the bounds on the semidegree of sufficiently large oriented graphs that are strongly Hamiltonian-connected, $k$-ordered Hamiltonian and spanning $k$-linked.

Almost Perfect Mutually Unbiased Bases that are Sparse
Published • View PublicationBIB
In dimension $d$, Mutually Unbiased Bases (MUBs) are a collection of orthonormal bases over $\mathbb{C}^d$ such that for any two vectors $v_1, v_2$ belonging to different bases, the scalar product $|\braket{v_1|v_2}| = \frac{1}{\sqrt{d}}$. The upper bound on the number of such bases is $d+1$. Constructions to achieve this bound are known when $d$ is some power of prime. The situation is more restrictive in other cases and also when we consider the results over real rather than complex. Thus, certain relaxations of this model are considered in literature and consequently Approximate MUBs (AMUB) are studied. This enables one to construct potentially large number of such objects for $\mathbb{C}^d$ as well as in $\mathbb{R}^d$. In this regard, we propose the concept of Almost Perfect MUBs (APMUB), where we restrict the absolute value of inner product $|\braket{v_1|v_2}|$ to be two-valued, one being 0 and the other $ \leq \frac{1+\mathcal{O}(d^{-λ})}{\sqrt{d}}$, such that $λ> 0$ and the numerator $1 + \mathcal{O}(d^{-λ}) \leq 2$. Each such vector constructed, has an important feature that large number of its components are zero and the non-zero components are of equal magnitude. Our techniques are based on combinatorial structures related to RBDs. We show that for several composite dimensions $d$, one can construct $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{d})$ many APMUBs, in which cases the number of MUBs are significantly small. To be specific, this result works for $d$ of the form $(q-e)(q+f), \ q, e, f \in \mathbb{N}$, with the conditions $0 \leq f \leq e$ for constant $e, f$ and $q$ some power of prime. We also show that such APMUBs provide sets of Bi-angular vectors which are $\mathcal{O}(d^{\frac{3}{2}})$ in numbers, having high angular distances among them. Finally, as the MUBs are equivalent to a set of Hadamard matrices, we show that the APMUBs are so with the set of Weighing matrices.
Optimal partitions of the flat torus into parts of smaller diameter
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of partitioning a two-dimensional flat torus $T^2$ into $m$ sets in order to minimize the maximal diameter of a part. For $m \leqslant 25$ we give numerical estimates for the maximal diameter $d_m(T^2)$ at which the partition exists. Several approaches are proposed to obtain such estimates. In particular, we use the search for mesh partitions via the SAT solver, the global optimization approach for polygonal partitions, and the optimization of periodic hexagonal tilings. For $m=3$, the exact estimate is proved using elementary topological reasoning.

So's conjecture for integral circulant graphs of $4$ types
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [Discrete Mathematics 306 (2005) 153-158], So proposed a conjecture saying that integral circulant graphs with different connection sets have different spectra. This conjecture is still open. We prove that this conjecture holds for integral circulant graphs whose orders have prime factorization of $4$ types.

Phylogenetic Trees and the Moduli Space of n Points on the Projective Line
This is an expository paper. The geometry of phylogenetic trees is used to present in an accessible and pleasant fashion the results of Deligne, Mumford, and Knudsen about the moduli space of n distinct points on the projective line and its compactification, the moduli space of n-pointed stable curves of genus zero.

Hyperoctahedral group characters and a type-BC analog of graph coloring
Published • View PublicationBIB
We state combinatorial formulas for hyperoctahedral group ($\mathfrak B_n$) character evaluations of the form $χ( {{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1))$, where ${{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1) \in \Bbb Z[\mathfrak B_n]$ is a type-BC Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element, with $w \in \mathfrak B_n$ corresponding to simultaneously smooth type-B and C Schubert varieties. We also extend the definition of symmetric group codominance to elements of $\mathfrak B_n$ and show that for each element $w \in \mathfrak B_n$ above, there exists a BC-codominant element $v \in \mathfrak B_n$ satisfying $χ( {{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1)) = χ( {{\widetilde C}_v}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1))$ for all $\mathfrak B_n$-characters $χ$. Combinatorial structures and maps appearing in these formulas are type-BC extensions of planar networks, unit interval orders, indifference graphs, poset tableaux, and colorings. Using the ring of type-BC symmetric functions, we introduce natural generating functions $Y( {{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1))$ for the above evaluations. These provide a new type-BC analog of Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions [Adv. Math. 111 (1995) pp. 166-194].

Tropical Geometry of Rado Matroids
In this note, we characterize the products of simplicial generators for the Chow ring of a loopless matroid, extending a result of Backman, Eur, and Simpson. We prove that the stable intersection of a collection of tropical hyperplanes centered at the origin with the Bergman fan of a matroid is the Bergman fan of the dual of a certain Rado matroid.

A classification of nonzero skew immaculate functions
Published in Involve 19 (2026) 87-105 • View PublicationBIB
This article presents conditions under which the skewed version of immaculate noncommutative symmetric functions are nonzero. The work is motivated by the quest to determine when the matrix definition of a skew immaculate function aligns with the Hopf algberaic definition. We describe a necessary condition for a skew immaculate function to include a non-zero term, as well as a sufficient condition for there to be at least one non-zero term that survives any cancellation. We bring in several classical theorems such as the Pigeonhole Principle from combinatorics and Hall's Matching Theorem from graph theory to prove our theorems.

A note on graphs of $k$-colourings
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G$, the $k$-colouring graph of $G$ has vertices corresponding to proper $k$-colourings of $G$ and edges between colourings that differ at a single vertex. The graph supports the Glauber dynamics Markov chain for $k$-colourings, and has been extensively studied from both extremal and probabilistic perspectives. In this note, we show that for every graph $G$, there exists $k$ such that $G$ is uniquely determined by its $k$-colouring graph, confirming two conjectures of Asgarli, Krehbiel, Levinson and Russell. We further show that no finite family of generalised chromatic polynomials for $G$, which encode induced subgraph counts of its colouring graphs, uniquely determine $G$.

Factorial Basis Method for q-Series Applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Factorial Basis method, initially designed for quasi-triangular, shift-compatible factorial bases, provides solutions to linear recurrence equations in the form of definite-sums. This paper extends the Factorial Basis method to its q-analog, enabling its application in q-calculus. We demonstrate the adaptation of the method to q-sequences and its utility in the realm of q-combinatorics. The extended technique is employed to automatically prove established identities and unveil novel ones, particularly some associated with the Rogers-Ramanujan identities.

The domino problem is decidable for robust tilesets
Published • View PublicationBIB
One of the most fundamental problems in tiling theory is the domino problem: given a set of tiles and tiling rules, decide if there exists a way to tile the plane using copies of tiles and following their rules. The problem is known to be undecidable in general and even for sets of Wang tiles, which are unit square tiles wearing colours on their edges which can be assembled provided they share the same colour on their common edge, as proven by Berger in the 1960s. In this paper, we focus on Wang tilesets. We prove that the domino problem is decidable for robust tilesets, i.e. tilesets that either cannot tile the plane or can but, if so, satisfy some particular invariant provably. We establish that several famous tilesets considered in the literature are robust. We give arguments that this is true for all tilesets unless they are produced from non-robust Turing machines: a Turing machine is said to be non-robust if it does not halt and furthermore does so non-provably. As a side effect of our work, we provide a sound and relatively complete method for proving that a tileset can tile the plane. Our analysis also provides explanations for the observed similarities between proofs in the literature for various tilesets, as well as of phenomena that have been observed experimentally in the systematic study of tilesets using computer methods.
Planar Graphs with Homomorphisms to the 9-cycle
We study the problem of finding homomorphisms into odd cycles from planar graphs with high odd-girth. The Jaeger-Zhang conjecture states that every planar graph of odd-girth at least $4k+1$ admits a homomorphism to the odd cycle $C_{2k+1}$. The $k=1$ case is the well-known Grötzsch's $3$-coloring theorem. For general $k$, in 2013 Lovász, Thomassen, Wu, and Zhang showed that it suffices to have odd-girth at least $6k+1$. Improvements are known for $C_5$ and $C_7$ in [Combinatorica 2017, SIDMA 2020, Combinatorica 2022]. For $C_9$ we improve this hypothesis by showing that it suffices to have odd-girth 23. Our main tool is a variation on the potential method applied to modular orientations. This allows more flexibility when seeking reducible configurations. The same techniques also prove some results on circular coloring of signed planar graphs.

A Grammar of Dumont and a Theorem of Diaconis-Evans-Graham
Published • View PublicationBIB
We came across an unexpected connection between a remarkable grammar of Dumont for the joint distribution of $(\exc, \fix)$ over $S_n$ and a beautiful theorem of Diaconis-Evans-Graham on successions and fixed points of permutations. With the grammar in hand, we demonstrate the advantage of the grammatical calculus in deriving the generating functions, where the constant property plays a substantial role. On the grounds of left successions of a permutation, we present a grammatical treatment of the joint distribution investigated by Roselle. Moreover, we obtain a left succession analogue of the Diaconis-Evans-Graham theorem, exemplifying the idea of a grammar assisted bijection. The grammatical labelings give rise to an equidistribution of $(\jump, \des)$ and $(\exc, \drop)$ restricted to the set of left successions and the set of fixed points, {where $\jump$ is defined to be the number of ascents minus the number of left successions.}

A gluing operation for dimer quivers
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we introduce a gluing operation on dimer models. This allows us to construct dimer quivers on arbitrary surfaces. We study how the associated dimer and boundary algebras behave under the gluing and how to determine them from the gluing components. We also use this operation to construct homogeneous dimer quivers on annuli.
