For $n > 2k \geq 4$ we consider intersecting families $\mathcal F$ consisting of $k$-subsets of $\{1, 2, \ldots, n\}$. Let $\mathcal I(\mathcal F)$ denote the family of all distinct intersections $F \cap F'$, $F \neq F'$ and $F, F'\in \mathcal F$. Let $\mathcal A$ consist of the $k$-sets $A$ satisfying $|A \cap \{1, 2, 3\}| \geq 2$. We prove that for $n \geq 50 k^2$ $|\mathcal I(\mathcal F)|$ is maximized by $\mathcal A$.

A family $\mathcal F$ has covering number $τ$ if the size of the smallest set intersecting all sets from $\mathcal F$ is equal to $τ$. Let $M(n,k,τ)$ stand for the size of the largest intersecting family $\mathcal F$ of $k$-element subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ with covering number $τ$. It is a classical result of Erd\H os and Lovász that $M(n,k,k)\le k^k$ for any $n$. In this short note, we explore the behaviour of $M(n,k,τ)$ for $n<k^2$ and large $τ$. The results are quite surprising: For example, we show that
$M(n,k,τ) =(1-o(1)){n-1\choose k-1}$, if $n = \lfloor k^{3/2}\rfloor$, and $τ\le k-k^{3/4+o(1)}$ as $k\to\infty$;
$M(n,k,τ) <e^{-ck^{1/2}}{n\choose k}$, if $n = \lfloor k^{3/2}\rfloor$ and $τ>k-\frac 12k^{1/2}$.

For a family $\mathcal F$, let $\mathcal D(\mathcal F)$ stand for the family of all sets that can be expressed as $F\setminus G$, where $F,G\in \mathcal F$. A family $\mathcal F$ is intersecting if any two sets from the family have non-empty intersection. In this paper, we study the following question: what is the maximum of $|\mathcal D(\mathcal F)|$ for an intersecting family of $k$-element sets? Frankl conjectured that the maximum is attained when $\mathcal F$ is the family of all sets containing a fixed element. We show that this holds if $n \ge 50k\ln k$ and $k \ge 50$. At the same time, we provide a counterexample for $n< 4k$.

We say that the families $\mathcal F_1,\ldots, \mathcal F_{s+1}$ of $k$-element subsets of $[n]$ are cross-dependent if there are no pairwise disjoint sets $F_1,\ldots, F_{s+1}$, where $F_i\in \mathcal F_i$ for each $i$. The rainbow version of the Erd\H os Matching Conjecture due to Aharoni and Howard and independently to Huang, Loh and Sudakov states that $\min_{i} |\mathcal F_i|\le \max\big\{{n\choose k}-{n-s\choose k}, {(s+1)k-1\choose k}\big\}$ for $n\ge (s+1)k$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for $n>3e(s+1)k$ and $s>10^7$. One of the main tools in the proof is a concentration inequality due to Frankl and the author.

We show that the number of partial triangulations of a set of $n$ points on the plane is at least the $(n-2)$-nd Catalan number. This is tight for convex $n$-gons. We also describe all the equality cases.
Reconstructing the degree sequence of a sparse graph from a partial deck

The deck of a graph $G$ is the multiset of cards $\{G-v:v\in V(G)\}$. Myrvold (1992) showed that the degree sequence of a graph on $n\geq7$ vertices can be reconstructed from any deck missing one card. We prove that the degree sequence of a graph with average degree $d$ can reconstructed from any deck missing $O(n/d^3)$ cards. In particular, in the case of graphs that can be embedded on a fixed surface (e.g. planar graphs), the degree sequence can be reconstructed even when a linear number of the cards are missing.

We show that any proper coloring of a Kneser graph $KG_{n,k}$ with $n-2k+2$ colors contains a trivial color (i.e., a color consisting of sets that all contain a fixed element), provided $n>(2+\varepsilon)k^2$, where $\varepsilon\to 0$ as $k\to \infty$. This bound is essentially tight. This is a consequence of a more general result on the minimum number of non-trivial colors needed to properly color $KG_{n,k}$.

In 1973, Brown, Erdős and Sós proved that if $\mathcal{H}$ is a 3-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices which contains no triangulation of the sphere, then $\mathcal{H}$ has at most $O(n^{5/2})$ edges, and this bound is the best possible up to a constant factor. Resolving a conjecture of Linial, also reiterated by Keevash, Long, Narayanan, and Scott, we show that the same result holds for triangulations of the torus. Furthermore, we extend our result to every closed orientable surface $\mathcal{S}$.

Given a family of sets on the plane, we say that the family is intersecting if for any two sets from the family their interiors intersect. In this paper, we study intersecting families of triangles with vertices in a given set of points. In particular, we show that if a set $P$ of $n$ points is in convex position, then the largest intersecting family of triangles with vertices in $P$ contains at most $(\frac{1}{4}+o(1))\binom{n}{3}$ triangles.

Let $A,B \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d $ both span $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that $\langle a, b \rangle \in \{0,1\}$ holds for all $a \in A$, $b \in B$. We show that $ |A| \cdot |B| \le (d+1) 2^d $. This allows us to settle a conjecture by Bohn, Faenza, Fiorini, Fisikopoulos, Macchia, and Pashkovich (2015) concerning 2-level polytopes. Such polytopes have the property that for every facet-defining hyperplane $H$ there is a parallel hyperplane $H'$ such that $H \cup H'$ contain all vertices. The authors conjectured that for every $d$-dimensional 2-level polytope $P$ the product of the number of vertices of $P$ and the number of facets of $P$ is at most $d 2^{d+1}$, which we show to be true.

For two metric spaces $\mathbb X$ and $\mathcal Y$, the chromatic number $χ(\mathbb X;\mathcal Y)$ of $\mathbb X$ with forbidden $\mathcal Y$ is the smallest $k$ such that there is a coloring of the points of $\mathbb X$ with $k$ colors and no monochromatic copy of $\mathcal Y$. In this paper, we show that for each finite metric space $\mathcal{M}$ that contains at least two points the value $χ\left(\mathbb R^n_\infty; \mathcal M \right)$ grows exponentially with $n$. We also provide explicit lower and upper bounds for some special $\mathcal M$.

The well-known Sauer lemma states that a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ of VC-dimension at most $d$ has size at most $\sum_{i=0}^d\binom{n}{i}$. We obtain both random and explicit constructions to prove that the corresponding saturation number, i.e., the size of the smallest maximal family with VC-dimension $d\ge 2$, is at most $4^{d+1}$, and thus is independent of $n$.
Almost intersecting families

Let $n > k > 1$ be integers, $[n] = \{1, \ldots, n\}$. Let $\mathcal F$ be a family of $k$-subsets of~$[n]$. The family $\mathcal F$ is called intersecting if $F \cap F' \neq \emptyset$ for all $F, F' \in \mathcal F$. It is called almost intersecting if it is not intersecting but to every $F \in \mathcal F$ there is at most one $F'\in \mathcal F$ satisfying $F \cap F' = \emptyset$. Gerbner et al. proved that if $n \geq 2k + 2$ then $|\mathcal F| \leq {n - 1\choose k - 1}$ holds for almost intersecting families. The main result implies the considerably stronger and best possible bound $|\mathcal F| \leq {n - 1\choose k - 1} - {n - k - 1\choose k - 1} + 2$ for $n > (2 + o(1))k$.
Maximal degrees in subgraphs of Kneser graphs

In this paper, we study the maximum degree in non-empty induced subgraphs of the Kneser graph $KG(n,k)$. One of the main results asserts that, for $k>k_0$ and $n>64k^2$, whenever a non-empty subgraph has $m\ge k{n-2\choose k-2}$ vertices, its maximum degree is at least $\frac 12(1-\frac {k^2}n) m - {n-2\choose k-2}\ge 0.49 m$. This bound is essentially best possible. One of the intermediate steps is to obtain structural results on non-empty subgraphs with small maximum degree.
Intersection theorems for $(-1,0,1)$-vectors
In this paper, we investigate Erd\H os--Ko--Rado type theorems for families of vectors from $\{0,\pm 1\}^n$ with fixed numbers of $+1$'s and $-1$'s. Scalar product plays the role of intersection size. In particular, we sharpen our earlier result on the largest size of a family of such vectors that avoids the smallest possible scalar product. We also obtain an exact result for the largest size of a family with no negative scalar products.

Almost sharp bounds on the number of discrete chains in the plane

The following generalisation of the Erdős unit distance problem was recently suggested by Palsson, Senger and Sheffer. Given $k$ positive real numbers $δ_1,\dots,δ_k$, a $(k+1)$-tuple $(p_1,\dots,p_{k+1})$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is called a $(δ,k)$-chain if $\|p_j-p_{j+1}\| = δ_j$ for every $1\leq j \leq k$. What is the maximum number $C_k^d(n)$ of $(k,δ)$-chains in a set of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where the maximum is taken over all $δ$? Improving the results of Palsson, Senger and Sheffer, we essentially determine this maximum for all $k$ in the planar case. error term It is only for $k\equiv 1$ (mod) $3$ that the answer depends on the maximum number of unit distances in a set of $n$ points. We also obtain almost sharp results for even $k$ in $3$ dimension.
The right acute angles problem?

The Danzer--Grünbaum acute angles problem asks for the largest size of a set of points in ${\mathbb R}^d$ that determines only acute angles. Recently, the problem was essentially solved thanks to the results of the second author and of Gerencsér and Harangi: now, the lower and the upper bounds are $2^{d-1}+1$ and $2^d-1$, respectively. The lower-bound construction is surprisingly simple. In this note, we suggest the following variant of the problem, which is one way to "save" the problem. Put $F(α) = \lim_{d\to \infty} f(d,α)^{1/d}$, where $f(d,α)$ is the largest set of points in ${\mathbb R}^d$ with no angle greater than $α$. Then the question is to find $c:= \lim_{α\to π/2^-}F(α).$ Although one may expect that $c=2$ in view of the result of Gerencsér and Harangi, the best lower bound we could get is $c\ge \sqrt 2$. We also solve a related problem of Erdos and Füredi on the "stability" of the acute angles problem and refute another conjecture stated in the same paper.
