We consider the quantized enveloping algebra $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$ and its basic module $V(Λ_0)$. This module is infinite-dimensional, irreducible, integrable, and highest-weight. We describe $V(Λ_0)$ using a $q$-shuffle algebra in the following way. Start with the free associative algebra $\mathbb V$ on two generators $x,y$. The standard basis for $\mathbb V$ consists of the words in $x,y$. In 1995 M. Rosso introduced an associative algebra structure on $\mathbb V$, called a $q$-shuffle algebra. For $u,v\in \lbrace x,y\rbrace$ their $q$-shuffle product is $u\star v = uv+q^{(u,v)}vu$, where $( u,v) =2$ (resp. $(u,v) =-2$) if $u=v$ (resp.
$u\not=v$).
Let $\mathbb U$ denote the subalgebra of the $q$-shuffle algebra $\mathbb V$
that is generated by $x, y$. Rosso showed that the algebra $\mathbb U$ is isomorphic to the positive part of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$.
In our first main result, we turn $\mathbb U$ into a $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$-module. Let $\bf U$ denote the $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$-submodule of $\mathbb U$ generated by the empty word. In our second main result, we show that the $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$-modules $\bf U$ and $V(Λ_0)$ are isomorphic. Let $\bf V$ denote the subspace of $\mathbb V$ spanned by the words that do not begin with $y$ or $xx$. In our third main result, we show that $\bf U = \mathbb U \cap {\bf V}$.

We consider the positive part $U^+_q$ of the quantized enveloping algebra $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$. The algebra $U^+_q$ has a presentation involving two generators and two relations, called the $q$-Serre relations. There is a PBW basis for $U^+_q$ due to Damiani, and a PBW basis for $U^+_q$ due to Beck. In 2019 we used Catalan words and a $q$-shuffle algebra to express the Damiani PBW basis in closed form. In this paper we use a similar approach to express the Beck PBW basis in closed form. We also consider how the Damiani PBW basis and the Beck PBW basis are related to the alternating PBW basis for $U^+_q$.

The $q$-Onsager algebra $O_q$ has a presentation involving two generators $W_0$, $W_1$ and two relations, called the $q$-Dolan/Grady relations. The alternating central extension $\mathcal O_q$ has a presentation involving the alternating generators $\lbrace \mathcal W_{-k}\rbrace_{k=0}^\infty$, $\lbrace \mathcal W_{k+1}\rbrace_{k=0}^\infty$, $ \lbrace \mathcal G_{k+1}\rbrace_{k=0}^\infty$, $\lbrace \mathcal {\tilde G}_{k+1}\rbrace_{k=0}^\infty$ and a large number of relations. Let $\langle \mathcal W_0, \mathcal W_1 \rangle$ denote the subalgebra of $\mathcal O_q$ generated by $\mathcal W_0$, $\mathcal W_1$. It is known that there exists an algebra isomorphism $O_q \to \langle \mathcal W_0, \mathcal W_1 \rangle$ that sends $W_0\mapsto \mathcal W_0$ and $W_1 \mapsto \mathcal W_1$. It is known that the center $\mathcal Z$ of $\mathcal O_q$ is isomorphic to a polynomial algebra in countably many variables.
It is known that the multiplication map $\langle \mathcal W_0, \mathcal W_1 \rangle \otimes \mathcal Z \to \mathcal O_q$, $ w \otimes z \mapsto wz$ is an isomorphism of algebras. We call this isomorphism the standard tensor product factorization of $\mathcal O_q$. In the study of $\mathcal O_q$ there are two natural points of view: we can start with the alternating generators, or we can start with the standard tensor product factorization. It is not obvious how these two points of view are related. The goal of the paper is to describe this relationship. We give seven main results; the principal one is an attractive factorization of the generating function for some algebraically independent elements that generate $\mathcal Z$.
The algebra $U^+_q$ and its alternating central extension $\mathcal U^+_q$
Let $U^+_q$ denote the positive part of the quantized enveloping algebra $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$. The algebra $U^+_q$ has a presentation involving two generators $W_0$, $W_1$ and two relations, called the $q$-Serre relations. In 1993 I. Damiani obtained a PBW basis for $U^+_q$, consisting of some elements $\lbrace E_{n δ+ α_0} \rbrace_{n=0}^\infty$, $\lbrace E_{n δ+ α_1} \rbrace_{n=0}^\infty$, $\lbrace E_{n δ} \rbrace_{n=1}^\infty$. In 2019 we introduced the alternating central extension $\mathcal U^+_q$ of $U^+_q$. We defined $\mathcal U^+_q$ by generators and relations. The generators, said to be alternating, are denoted $\lbrace \mathcal W_{-k}\rbrace_{k=0}^\infty$, $\lbrace \mathcal W_{k+1}\rbrace_{k=0}^\infty$, $ \lbrace \mathcal G_{k+1}\rbrace_{k=0}^\infty$, $\lbrace \mathcal {\tilde G}_{k+1}\rbrace_{k=0}^\infty$. Let $\langle \mathcal W_0, \mathcal W_1 \rangle$ denote the subalgebra of $\mathcal U^+_q$ generated by $\mathcal W_0$, $\mathcal W_1$. It is known that there exists an algebra isomorphism $U^+_q\to \langle \mathcal W_0, \mathcal W_1 \rangle$ that sends $W_0 \mapsto \mathcal W_0$ and $W_1 \mapsto \mathcal W_1$. Via this isomorphism we identify $U^+_q$ with $\langle \mathcal W_0, \mathcal W_1 \rangle$. In our main result, we express the Damiani PBW basis elements in terms of the alternating generators. We give the answer in terms of generating functions.

The $q$-Onsager algebra $O_q$ is defined by two generators and two relations, called the $q$-Dolan/Grady relations. We investigate the alternating central extension $\mathcal O_q$ of $O_q$. The algebra $\mathcal O_q$ was introduced by Baseilhac and Koizumi, who called it the current algebra of $O_q$. Recently Baseilhac and Shigechi gave a presentation of $\mathcal O_q$ by generators and relations. The presentation is attractive, but the multitude of generators and relations makes the presentation unwieldy. In this paper we obtain a presentation of $\mathcal O_q$ that involves a subset of the original set of generators and a very manageable set of relations. We call this presentation the compact presentation of $\mathcal O_q$. This presentation resembles the compact presentation of the alternating central extension for the positive part of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$.

The $q$-Onsager algebra $O_q$ is presented by two generators $W_0$, $W_1$ and two relations, called the $q$-Dolan/Grady relations. Recently Baseilhac and Koizumi introduced a current algebra $\mathcal A_q$ for $O_q$. Soon afterwards, Baseilhac and Shigechi gave a presentation of $\mathcal A_q$ by generators and relations. We show that these generators give a PBW basis for $\mathcal A_q$. Using this PBW basis, we show that the algebra $\mathcal A_q$ is isomorphic to $O_q \otimes \mathbb F \lbrack z_1, z_2, \ldots \rbrack$, where $\mathbb F$ is the ground field and $\lbrace z_n \rbrace_{n=1}^\infty $ are mutually commuting indeterminates. Recall the positive part $U^+_q$ of the quantized enveloping algebra $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$. Our results show that $O_q$ is related to $\mathcal A_q$ in the same way that $U^+_q$ is related to the alternating central extension of $U^+_q$. For this reason, we propose to call $\mathcal A_q$ the alternating central extension of $O_q$.

The $q$-Onsager algebra $\mathcal O_q$ is defined by two generators $W_0, W_1$ and two relations called the $q$-Dolan/Grady relations. Recently Baseilhac and Kolb obtained a PBW basis for $\mathcal O_q$ with elements denoted $\lbrace B_{n δ+ α_0} \rbrace_{n=0}^\infty, \lbrace B_{n δ+ α_1} \rbrace_{n=0}^\infty, \lbrace B_{n δ} \rbrace_{n=1}^\infty $. In their recent study of a current algebra $\mathcal A_q$, Baseilhac and Belliard conjecture that there exist elements
$\lbrace W_{-k}\rbrace_{k=0}^\infty, \lbrace W_{k+1}\rbrace_{k=0}^\infty,
\lbrace G_{k+1} \rbrace_{k=0}^\infty, \lbrace {\tilde G}_{k+1} \rbrace_{k=0}^\infty$ in $\mathcal O_q$ that satisfy the defining relations for $\mathcal A_q$. In order to establish this conjecture, it is desirable to know how the elements in the second list above are related to the elements in the first list above. In the present paper, we conjecture the precise relationship and give some supporting evidence. This evidence consists of some computer checks on SageMath due to Travis Scrimshaw, and a proof of our conjecture for a homomorphic image of $\mathcal O_q$ called the universal Askey-Wilson algebra.

Recently Sarah Bockting-Conrad introduced the double lowering operator $ψ$ for a tridiagonal pair. Motivated by $ψ$ we consider the following problem about polynomials. Let $\mathbb F$ denote an algebraically closed field. Let $x$ denote an indeterminate, and let $\mathbb F\lbrack x \rbrack$ denote the algebra consisting of the polynomials in $x$ that have all coefficients in $\mathbb F$. Let $N$ denote a positive integer or $\infty$. Let $\lbrace a_i\rbrace_{i=0}^{N-1}$, $\lbrace b_i\rbrace_{i=0}^{N-1}$ denote scalars in $\mathbb F$ such that $\sum_{h=0}^{i-1} a_h \not= \sum_{h=0}^{i-1} b_h$ for $1 \leq i \leq N$. For $0 \leq i \leq N$ define polynomials $τ_i, η_i \in \mathbb F\lbrack x \rbrack$ by $τ_i = \prod_{h=0}^{i-1} (x-a_h)$ and $η_i = \prod_{h=0}^{i-1} (x-b_h)$. Let $V$ denote the subspace of $\mathbb F\lbrack x \rbrack$ spanned by $\lbrace x^i\rbrace_{i=0}^N$. An element $ψ\in \operatorname{End}(V)$ is called double lowering whenever $ψτ_i \in \mathbb F τ_{i-1}$ and $ψη_i \in \mathbb F η_{i-1}$ for $0 \leq i \leq N$, where $τ_{-1}=0$ and $η_{-1}=0$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on $\lbrace a_i\rbrace_{i=0}^{N-1}$, $\lbrace b_i\rbrace_{i=0}^{N-1}$ for there to exist a nonzero double lowering map. There are four families of solutions, which we describe in detail.

Connectivity concerning the last two subconstituents of a Q-polynomial distance-regular graph
Let $Γ$ be a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph of diameter $d\geq 3$. Fix a vertex $γ$ of $Γ$ and consider the subgraph induced on the union of the last two subconstituents of $Γ$ with respect to $γ$. We prove that this subgraph is connected.
The alternating central extension for the positive part of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$
This paper is about the positive part $U^+_q$ of the quantum group $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$. The algebra $U^+_q$ has a presentation with two generators $A,B$ that satisfy the cubic $q$-Serre relations. Recently we introduced a type of element in $U^+_q$, said to be alternating. Each alternating element commutes with exactly one of $A$, $B$, $qBA-q^{-1}AB$, $qAB-q^{-1}BA$; this gives four types of alternating elements. There are infinitely many alternating elements of each type, and these mutually commute. In the present paper we use the alternating elements to obtain a central extension $\mathcal U^+_q$ of $U^+_q$. We define $\mathcal U^+_q$ by generators and relations. These generators, said to be alternating, are in bijection with the alternating elements of $U^+_q$. We display a surjective algebra homomorphism $\mathcal U^+_q \to U^+_q$ that sends each alternating generator of $\mathcal U^+_q$ to the corresponding alternating element in $U^+_q$. We adjust this homomorphism to obtain an algebra isomorphism $\mathcal U_q^+ \to U^+_q \otimes \mathbb F \lbrack z_1, z_2,\ldots\rbrack$ where $\mathbb F$ is the ground field and $\lbrace z_n\rbrace_{n=1}^\infty$ are mutually commuting indeterminates. We show that the alternating generators form a PBW basis for $\mathcal U_q^+$. We discuss how $\mathcal U^+_q$ is related to the work of Baseilhac, Koizumi, Shigechi concerning the $q$-Onsager algebra and integrable lattice models.

There is a concept in linear algebra called a tridiagonal pair. The concept was motivated by the theory of $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs. We give a tutorial introduction to tridiagonal pairs, working with a special case as a concrete example. The special case is called totally bipartite, or TB. Starting from first principles, we give an elementary but comprehensive account of TB tridiagonal pairs. The following topics are discussed: (i) the notion of a TB tridiagonal system; (ii) the eigenvalue array; (iii) the standard basis and matrix representations; (iv) the intersection numbers; (v) the Askey-Wilson relations; (vi) a recurrence involving the eigenvalue array; (vii) the classification of TB tridiagonal systems; (viii) self-dual TB tridiagonal pairs and systems; (ix) the $\mathbb{Z}_3$-symmetric Askey-Wilson relations; (x) some automorphisms and antiautomorphisms associated with a TB tridiagonal pair; (xi) an action of the modular group ${\rm PSL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ associated with a TB tridiagonal pair.

Let $Γ$ denote a finite, undirected, connected graph, with vertex set $X$. Fix a vertex $x \in X$. Associated with $x$ is a certain subalgebra $T=T(x)$ of ${\rm Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$, called the subconstituent algebra. The algebra $T$ is semisimple. Hora and Obata introduced a certain subalgebra $Q \subseteq T$, called the quantum adjacency algebra. The algebra $Q$ is semisimple. In this paper we investigate how $Q$ and $T$ are related. In many cases $Q=T$, but this is not true in general. To clarify this issue, we introduce the notion of quasi-isomorphic irreducible $T$-modules. We show that the following are equivalent: (i) $Q \neq T$; (ii) there exists a pair of quasi-isomorphic irreducible $T$-modules that have different endpoints. To illustrate this result we consider two examples. The first example concerns the Hamming graphs. The second example concerns the bipartite dual polar graphs. We show that for the first example $Q=T$, and for the second example $Q \neq T$.

The Hasse diagram $\widehat Φ_n$ is obtained from the $n$-cube by adding some edges. We show that the dihedral group $D_{2n}$ acts on $\widehat Φ_n$ as a group of automorphisms.

Let $\C$ denote the field of complex numbers, and fix a nonzero $q \in \C$ such that $q^4 \ne 1$. Define a $\C$-algebra $Δ_q$ by generators and relations in the following way. The generators are $A,B,C$. The relations assert that each of $A+\frac{qBC-q^{-1}CB}{q^2-q^{-2}}$, $B+\frac{qCA-q^{-1}AC}{q^2-q^{-2}}$, $C+\frac{qAB-q^{-1}BA}{q^2-q^{-2}}$ is central in $Δ_q$. The algebra $Δ_q$ is called the universal Askey-Wilson algebra. Let $Γ$ denote a distance-regular graph that has $q$-Racah type. Fix a vertex $x$ of $Γ$ and let $T=T(x)$ denote the corresponding subconstituent algebra. In this paper we discuss a relationship between $Δ_q$ and $T$. Assuming that every irreducible $T$-module is thin, we display a surjective $\C$-algebra homomorphism $Δ_q \to T$. This gives a $Δ_q$ action on the standard module of $T$.

In the present paper we give an elementary but comprehensive account of how the following are related: (i) Krawtchouk polynomials; (ii) finite-dimensional irreducible modules for the Lie algebra ${\mathfrak{sl}_2}$; (iii) a class of Leonard pairs said to have Krawtchouk type. Along the way we obtain elementary proofs of some well-known facts about Krawtchouk polynomials, such as the three-term recurrence, the orthogonality, the difference equation, and the generating function. The paper is a tutorial meant for a graduate student or a researcher unfamiliar with the above topics.
Bipartite Q-polynomial distance-regular graphs and uniform posets
Let $\G$ denote a bipartite distance-regular graph with vertex set $X$ and diameter $D \ge 3$. Fix $x \in X$ and let $L$ (resp. $R$) denote the corresponding lowering (resp. raising) matrix. We show that each $Q$-polynomial structure for $\G$ yields a certain linear dependency among $RL^2$, $LRL$, $L^2R$, $L$. Define a partial order $\le$ on $X$ as follows. For $y,z \in X$ let $y \le z$ whenever $\partial(x,y)+\partial(y,z)=\partial(x,z)$, where $\partial$ denotes path-length distance. We determine whether the above linear dependency gives this poset a uniform or strongly uniform structure. We show that except for one special case a uniform structure is attained, and except for three special cases a strongly uniform structure is attained.

A matrix $B \in \MX$ is called $A$-{\em like} whenever both (i) $BA = AB$; (ii) for all $x,y \in X$ that are not equal or adjacent, the $(x,y)$-entry of $B$ is zero.
