A Solution of Simultaneous Recurrences
The paper is devoted to the methods of solving simultaneous recurrences. Specifically, we discuss transformation of matrix recurrences to regular recurrences and propose a way of solving special matrix recurrences of order three by their decomposition to matrix recurrences of order two.

Decomposition Lemmas
We define two recursive functions obtained by decomposition of a given interval into four close parts and prove two lemmas which determine features of these functions.

Fibonacci Graphs and their Expressions
The paper investigates relationship between algebraic expressions and graphs. We consider a digraph called a Fibonacci graph which gives a generic example of non-series-parallel graphs. Our intention in this paper is to simplify the expressions of Fibonacci graphs and eventually find their shortest representations. With that end in view, we describe the number of methods for generating Fibonacci graph expressions and carry out their comparative analysis.

On the Optimal Representation of Algebraic Expressions of Fibonacci Graphs
The paper investigates relationship between algebraic expressions and graphs. We consider a digraph called a Fibonacci graph which gives a generic example of non-series-parallel graphs. Our intention in this paper is to simplify the expressions of Fibonacci graphs and eventually find their shortest representations. With that end in view, we describe the optimal decomposition method for generating Fibonacci graph expressions that is conjectured to provide these representations. Proof (or disproof) of this conjecture is presented as an open problem.
Balanced Abelian group valued functions on directed graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss functions from the edges and vertices of a directed graph to an Abelian group. Such functions, when the sum of their values along any cycle is zero, are called balanced and form an Abelian group. We study this group in two cases: when we allowed to walk against the direction of an edge taking the opposite value of the function and when we are not allowed to walk against the direction.

On f-Symmetries of the Independence Polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
An independent set in a graph is a set of pairwise non-adjacent vertices, and a(G) is the size of a maximum independent set in the graph G. If s_{k} is the number of independent sets of cardinality k in G, then I(G;x)=s_0+s_1*x+s_2*x^2+...+s_a*x^a,a=a(G), is called the independence polynomial of G (I. Gutman and F. Harary, 1983). If s_{a-i}=f(i)*s_{i} holds for every i, then I(G;x) is called f-symmetric (f-palindromic). If f(i)=1, then I(G;x) is symmetric (palindromic). The corona of the graphs G and H is the graph G*H obtained by joining each vertex of G to all the vertices of a copy of H. In this paper we show that if H is a graph with p vertices, q edges, and alpha(H)=2, then I(G*H;x) is f-symmetric for some elegant function f. In particular, if H = K_{r}-e, we show that I(G*H;x) is symmetric and unimodal, with a unique mode. This finding generalizes results due to (Stevanovic, 1998) and (Mandrescu, 2012) claiming that I(G*(K_2-e);x)=I(G*2K_1;x) is symmetric and unimodal for every graph G.
Structure of the Group of Balanced Labelings on Graphs, its Subgroups and Quotient Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss functions from edges and vertices of an undirected graph to an Abelian group. Such functions, when the sum of their values along any cycle is zero, are called balanced labelings. The set of balanced labelings forms an Abelian group. We study the structure of this group and the structure of two closely related to it groups: the subgroup of balanced labelings which consists of functions vanishing on vertices and the corresponding factor-group. This work is completely self-contained, except the algorithm for obtaining the 3-edge-connected components of an undirected graph, for which we make appropriate references to the literature.

On the Intersection of All Critical Sets of a Unicyclic Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
A set S is independent in a graph G if no two vertices from S are adjacent. The independence number alpha(G) is the cardinality of a maximum independent set, while mu(G) is the size of a maximum matching in G. If alpha(G)+mu(G)=|V|, then G=(V,E) is called a Konig-Egervary graph. The number d_{c}(G)=max{|A|-|N(A)|} is called the critical difference of G (Zhang, 1990). By core(G) (corona(G)) we denote the intersection (union, respectively) of all maximum independent sets, while by ker(G) we mean the intersection of all critical independent sets. A connected graph having only one cycle is called unicyclic. It is known that ker(G) is a subset of core(G) for every graph G, while the equality is true for bipartite graphs (Levit and Mandrescu, 2011). For Konig-Egervary unicyclic graphs, the difference |core(G)|-|ker(G)| may equal any non-negative integer. In this paper we prove that if G is a non-Konig-Egervary unicyclic graph, then: (i) ker(G)= core(G) and (ii) |corona(G)|+|core(G)|=2*alpha(G)+1. Pay attention that |corona(G)|+|core(G)|=2*alpha(G) holds for every Konig-Egervary graph.

On Symmetry of Independence Polynomials

An independent set in a graph is a set of pairwise non-adjacent vertices, and alpha(G) is the size of a maximum independent set in the graph G. A matching is a set of non-incident edges, while mu(G) is the cardinality of a maximum matching. If s_{k} is the number of independent sets of cardinality k in G, then I(G;x)=s_{0}+s_{1}x+s_{2}x^{2}+...+s_{α(G)}x^{α(G)} is called the independence polynomial of G (Gutman and Harary, 1983). If $s_{j}=s_{α-j}$, 0=< j =< alpha(G), then I(G;x) is called symmetric (or palindromic). It is known that the graph G*2K_{1} obtained by joining each vertex of G to two new vertices, has a symmetric independence polynomial (Stevanovic, 1998). In this paper we show that for every graph G and for each non-negative integer k =< mu(G), one can build a graph H, such that: G is a subgraph of H, I(H;x) is symmetric, and I(G*2K_{1};x)=(1+x)^{k}*I(H;x).

On the Core of a Unicyclic Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
A set S is independent in a graph G if no two vertices from S are adjacent. By core(G) we mean the intersection of all maximum independent sets. The independence number alpha(G) is the cardinality of a maximum independent set, while mu(G) is the size of a maximum matching in G. A connected graph having only one cycle, say C, is a unicyclic graph. In this paper we prove that if G is a unicyclic graph of order n and n-1 = alpha(G) + mu(G), then core(G) coincides with the union of cores of all trees in G-C.

On the Structure of the Minimum Critical Independent Set of a Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G=(V,E). A set S is independent if no two vertices from S are adjacent. The number d(X)= |X|-|N(X)| is the difference of X, and an independent set A is critical if d(A) = max{d(I):I is an independent set}. Let us recall that ker(G) is the intersection of all critical independent sets, and core(G) is the intersection of all maximum independent sets. Recently, it was established that ker(G) is a subset of core(G) is true for every graph, while the corresponding equality holds for bipartite graphs. In this paper we present various structural properties of ker(G). The main finding claims that ker(G) is equal to the union of all inclusion minimal independent sets with positive difference.

Critical Sets in Bipartite Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G=(V,E) be a graph. A set S is independent if no two vertices from S are adjacent, alpha(G) is the size of a maximum independent set, and core(G) is the intersection of all maximum independent sets. The number d(X)=|X|-|N(X)| is the difference of the set X, and d_{c}(G)=max{d(I):I is an independent set} is called the critical difference of G. A set X is critical if d(X)=d_{c}(G). For a graph G we define ker(G) as the intersection of all critical independent sets, while diadem(G) is the union of all critical independent sets. For a bipartite graph G=(A,B,E), with bipartition {A,B}, Ore defined delta(X)=d(X) for every subset X of A, while delta_0(A)=max{delta(X):X is a subset of A}. Similarly is defined delta_0(B). In this paper we prove that for every bipartite graph G=(A,B,E) the following assertions hold: d_{c}(G)=delta_0(A)+delta_0(B); ker(G)=core(G); |ker(G)|+|diadem(G)|=2*alpha(G).

An Algorithm Computing the Core of a Konig-Egervary Graph
A set S of vertices is independent in a graph G if no two vertices from S are adjacent, and alpha(G) is the cardinality of a maximum independent set of G. G is called a Konig-Egervary graph if its order equals alpha(G)+mu(G), where mu(G) denotes the size of a maximum matching. By core(G) we mean the intersection of all maximum independent sets of G. To decide whether core(G) is empty is known to be NP-hard. In this paper, we present some polynomial time algorithms finding core(G) of a Konig-Egervary graph G.

Local Maximum Stable Sets Greedoids Stemmed from Very Well-Covered Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A maximum stable set in a graph G is a stable set of maximum cardinality. S is called a local maximum stable set of G if S is a maximum stable set of the subgraph induced by the closed neighborhood of S. A greedoid (V,F) is called a local maximum stable set greedoid if there exists a graph G=(V,E) such that its family of local maximum stable sets coinsides with (V,F). It has been shown that the family local maximum stable sets of a forest T forms a greedoid on its vertex set. In this paper we demonstrate that if G is a very well-covered graph, then its family of local maximum stable sets is a greedoid if and only if G has a unique perfect matching.

Vertices Belonging to All Critical Independent Sets of a Graph

Let G=(V,E) be a graph. A set S is independent if no two vertices from S are adjacent. The independence number alpha(G) is the cardinality of a maximum independent set, and mu(G) is the size of a maximum matching. The number id_{c}(G)=max{|I|-|N(I)|:I is an independent set} is called the critical independence difference of G, and A is critical if |A|-|N(A)|=id_{c}(G). We define core(G) as the intersection of all maximum independent sets, and ker(G)as the intersection of all critical independent sets. In this paper we prove that if a graph G is non-quasi-regularizable (i.e., there exists some independent set A, such that |A|>|N(A)|), then: ker(G) is a subset of core(G), and |ker(G)|> id_{c}(G) >= alpha(G)-mu(G) > 0.

A Set and Collection Lemma
Published • View PublicationBIB
A set S is independent if no two vertices from S are adjacent. In this paper we prove that if F is a collection of maximum independent sets of a graph, then there is a matching from S-{intersection of all members of F} into {union of all members of F}-S, for every independent set S. Based on this finding we give alternative proofs for a number of well-known lemmata, as the "Maximum Stable Set Lemma" due to Claude Berge and the "Clique Collection Lemma" due to András Hajnal.

Very Well-Covered Graphs of Girth at least Four and Local Maximum Stable Set Greedoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
A \textit{maximum stable set} in a graph $G$ is a stable set of maximum cardinality. $S$ is a \textit{local maximum stable set} of $G$, and we write $S\inΨ(G)$, if $S$ is a maximum stable set of the subgraph induced by $S\cup N(S)$, where $N(S)$ is the neighborhood of $S$. Nemhauser and Trotter Jr. (1975), proved that any $S\inΨ(G)$ is a subset of a maximum stable set of $G$. In (Levit & Mandrescu, 2002) we have shown that the family $Ψ(T)$ of a forest $T$ forms a greedoid on its vertex set. The cases where $G$ is bipartite, triangle-free, well-covered, while $Ψ(G)$ is a greedoid, were analyzed in (Levit & Mandrescu, 2002),(Levit & Mandrescu, 2004),(Levit & Mandrescu, 2007), respectively. In this paper we demonstrate that if $G$ is a very well-covered graph of girth $\geq4$, then the family $Ψ(G)$ is a greedoid if and only if $G$ has a unique perfect matching.

On the independence polynomial of an antiregular graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph with at most two vertices of the same degree is called antiregular (Merris 2003), maximally nonregular (Zykov 1990) or quasiperfect (Behzad, Chartrand 1967). If s_{k} is the number of independent sets of cardinality k in a graph G, then I(G;x) = s_{0} + s_{1}x + ... + s_{alpha}x^{alpha} is the independence polynomial of G (Gutman, Harary 1983), where alpha = alpha(G) is the size of a maximum independent set. In this paper we derive closed formulae for the independence polynomials of antiregular graphs. In particular, we deduce that every antiregular graph A is uniquely defined by its independence polynomial I(A;x), within the family of threshold graphs. Moreover, I(A;x) is logconcave with at most two real roots, and I(A;-1) belongs to {-1,0}.

When G^2 is a Konig-Egervary graph?
Published • View PublicationBIB
The square of a graph G is the graph G^2 with the same vertex set as in G, and an edge of G^2 is joining two distinct vertices, whenever the distance between them in G is at most 2. G is a square-stable graph if it enjoys the property alpha(G)=alpha(G^2), where alpha(G) is the size of a maximum stable set in G. In this paper we show that G^2 is a Konig-Egervary graph if and only if G is a square-stable Konig-Egervary graph.

A characterization of Konig-Egervary graphs using a common property of all maximum matchings
Published • View PublicationBIB
The independence number of a graph G, denoted by alpha(G), is the cardinality of an independent set of maximum size in G, while mu(G) is the size of a maximum matching in G, i.e., its matching number. G is a Konig-Egervary graph if its order equals alpha(G)+mu(G). In this paper we give a new characterization of Konig-Egervary graphs. We also deduce some properties of vertices belonging to all maximum independent sets of a Konig-Egervary graph.
