Layered treewidth and row treewidth are recently introduced graph parameters that have been key ingredients in the solution of several well-known open problems. It follows from the definitions that the layered treewidth of a graph is at most its row treewidth plus 1. Moreover, a minor-closed class has bounded layered treewidth if and only if it has bounded row treewidth. However, it has been open whether row treewidth is bounded by a function of layered treewidth. This paper answers this question in the negative. In particular, for every integer $k$ we describe a graph with layered treewidth 1 and row treewidth $k$. We also prove an analogous result for layered pathwidth and row pathwidth.

We describe a family of graphs with queue-number at most 4 but unbounded stack-number. This resolves open problems of Heath, Leighton and Rosenberg (1992) and Blankenship and Oporowski (1999).
Asymptotically Optimal Vertex Ranking of Planar Graphs
A (vertex) $\ell$-ranking is a colouring $\varphi:V(G)\to\mathbb{N}$ of the vertices of a graph $G$ with integer colours so that for any path $u_0,\ldots,u_p$ of length at most $\ell$, $\varphi(u_0)\neq\varphi(u_p)$ or $\varphi(u_0)<\max\{\varphi(u_0),\ldots,\varphi(u_p)\}$. We show that, for any fixed integer $\ell\ge 2$, every $n$-vertex planar graph has an $\ell$-ranking using $O(\log n/\log\log\log n)$ colours and this is tight even when $\ell=2$; for infinitely many values of $n$, there are $n$-vertex planar graphs, for which any 2-ranking requires $Ω(\log n/\log\log\log n)$ colours. This result also extends to bounded genus graphs.
In developing this proof we obtain optimal bounds on the number of colours needed for $\ell$-ranking graphs of treewidth $t$ and graphs of simple treewidth $t$. These upper bounds are constructive and give $O(n)$-time algorithms. Additional results that come from our techniques include new sublogarithmic upper bounds on the number of colours needed for $\ell$-rankings of apex minor-free graphs and $k$-planar graphs.
Two Results on Layered Pathwidth and Linear Layouts
Layered pathwidth is a new graph parameter studied by Bannister et al (2015). In this paper we present two new results relating layered pathwidth to two types of linear layouts. Our first result shows that, for any graph $G$, the stack number of $G$ is at most four times the layered pathwidth of $G$. Our second result shows that any graph $G$ with track number at most three has layered pathwidth at most four. The first result complements a result of Dujmović and Frati (2018) relating layered treewidth and stack number. The second result solves an open problem posed by Bannister et al (2015).
Adjacency Labelling for Planar Graphs (and Beyond)

We show that there exists an adjacency labelling scheme for planar graphs where each vertex of an $n$-vertex planar graph $G$ is assigned a $(1+o(1))\log_2 n$-bit label and the labels of two vertices $u$ and $v$ are sufficient to determine if $uv$ is an edge of $G$. This is optimal up to the lower order term and is the first such asymptotically optimal result. An alternative, but equivalent, interpretation of this result is that, for every $n$, there exists a graph $U_n$ with $n^{1+o(1)}$ vertices such that every $n$-vertex planar graph is an induced subgraph of $U_n$. These results generalize to bounded genus graphs, apex-minor-free graphs, bounded-degree graphs from minor closed families, and $k$-planar graphs.
Clustered 3-Colouring Graphs of Bounded Degree

A (not necessarily proper) vertex colouring of a graph has "clustering" $c$ if every monochromatic component has at most $c$ vertices. We prove that planar graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ are 3-colourable with clustering $O(Δ^2)$. The previous best bound was $O(Δ^{37})$. This result for planar graphs generalises to graphs that can be drawn on a surface of bounded Euler genus with a bounded number of crossings per edge. We then prove that graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ that exclude a fixed minor are 3-colourable with clustering $O(Δ^5)$. The best previous bound for this result was exponential in $Δ$.
Graph product structure for non-minor-closed classes
Dujmović et al. [\emph{J.~ACM}~'20] recently proved that every planar graph is isomorphic to a subgraph of the strong product of a bounded treewidth graph and a path. Analogous results were obtained for graphs of bounded Euler genus or apex-minor-free graphs. These tools have been used to solve longstanding problems on queue layouts, non-repetitive colouring, $p$-centered colouring, and adjacency labelling. This paper proves analogous product structure theorems for various non-minor-closed classes. One noteable example is $k$-planar graphs (those with a drawing in the plane in which each edge is involved in at most $k$ crossings). We prove that every $k$-planar graph is isomorphic to a subgraph of the strong product of a graph of treewidth $O(k^5)$ and a path. This is the first result of this type for a non-minor-closed class of graphs. It implies, amongst other results, that $k$-planar graphs have non-repetitive chromatic number upper-bounded by a function of $k$. All these results generalise for drawings of graphs on arbitrary surfaces. In fact, we work in a more general setting based on so-called shortcut systems, which are of independent interest. This leads to analogous results for certain types of map graphs, string graphs, graph powers, and nearest neighbour graphs.
Planar graphs have bounded nonrepetitive chromatic number

A colouring of a graph is "nonrepetitive" if for every path of even order, the sequence of colours on the first half of the path is different from the sequence of colours on the second half. We show that planar graphs have nonrepetitive colourings with a bounded number of colours, thus proving a conjecture of Alon, Grytczuk, Haluszczak and Riordan (2002). We also generalise this result for graphs of bounded Euler genus, graphs excluding a fixed minor, and graphs excluding a fixed topological minor.
Planar graphs have bounded queue-number

We show that planar graphs have bounded queue-number, thus proving a conjecture of Heath, Leighton and Rosenberg from 1992. The key to the proof is a new structural tool called layered partitions, and the result that every planar graph has a vertex-partition and a layering, such that each part has a bounded number of vertices in each layer, and the quotient graph has bounded treewidth. This result generalises for graphs of bounded Euler genus. Moreover, we prove that every graph in a minor-closed class has such a layered partition if and only if the class excludes some apex graph. Building on this work and using the graph minor structure theorem, we prove that every proper minor-closed class of graphs has bounded queue-number.
Layered partitions have strong connections to other topics, including the following two examples. First, they can be interpreted in terms of strong products. We show that every planar graph is a subgraph of the strong product of a path with some graph of bounded treewidth. Similar statements hold for all proper minor-closed classes. Second, we give a simple proof of the result by DeVos et al. (2004) that graphs in a proper minor-closed class have low treewidth colourings.
Queue Layouts of Graphs with Bounded Degree and Bounded Genus
Motivated by the question of whether planar graphs have bounded queue-number, we prove that planar graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ have queue-number $O(Δ^{2})$, which improves upon the best previous bound of $O(Δ^6)$. More generally, we prove that graphs with bounded degree and bounded Euler genus have bounded queue-number. In particular graphs with Euler genus $g$ and maximum degree $Δ$ have queue-number $O(g+Δ^{2})$. As a byproduct we prove that if planar graphs have bounded queue-number, then graphs of Euler genus $g$ have queue-number $O(g)$.
Dual Circumference and Collinear Sets
We show that, if a $n$-vertex triangulation $T$ of maximum degree $Δ$ has a dual that contains a cycle of length $\ell$, then $T$ has a non-crossing straight-line drawing in which some \emph{collinear set} of $Ω(\ell/Δ^4)$ vertices lie on a line. Using the current lower bounds on the length of longest cycles in 3-regular 3-connected graphs, this implies that every $n$-vertex planar graph of maximum degree $Δ$ has a collinear set of size $Ω(n^{0.8}/Δ^4)$. Very recently, Dujmović et. al. (SODA 2019) showed that, if $S$ is a collinear set in a triangulation $T$ then, for any point set $X\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ with $|X|=|S|$, $T$ has a non-crossing straight-line drawing in which the vertices of $S$ are drawn on the points in $X$. Because of this, collinear sets have numerous applications in graph drawing and related areas.
Every Collinear Set in a Planar Graph Is Free

We show that if a planar graph $G$ has a plane straight-line drawing in which a subset $S$ of its vertices are collinear, then for any set of points, $X$, in the plane with $|X|=|S|$, there is a plane straight-line drawing of $G$ in which the vertices in $S$ are mapped to the points in $X$. This solves an open problem posed by Ravsky and Verbitsky in 2008. In their terminology, we show that every collinear set is free.
This result has applications in graph drawing, including untangling, column planarity, universal point subsets, and partial simultaneous drawings.

We prove that a minor-closed class of graphs has bounded layered pathwidth if and only if some apex-forest is not in the class. This generalises a theorem of Robertson and Seymour, which says that a minor-closed class of graphs has bounded pathwidth if and only if some forest is not in the class.

We study the question whether a crossing-free 3D morph between two straight-line drawings of an $n$-vertex tree can be constructed consisting of a small number of linear morphing steps. We look both at the case in which the two given drawings are two-dimensional and at the one in which they are three-dimensional. In the former setting we prove that a crossing-free 3D morph always exists with $O(\log n)$ steps, while for the latter $Θ(n)$ steps are always sufficient and sometimes necessary.
Tight Upper Bounds on the Crossing Number in a Minor-Closed Class
The crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of crossings in a drawing of the graph in the plane. Our main result is that every graph $G$ that does not contain a fixed graph as a minor has crossing number $O(Δn)$, where $G$ has $n$ vertices and maximum degree $Δ$. This dependence on $n$ and $Δ$ is best possible. This result answers an open question of Wood and Telle [New York J. Mathematics, 2007], who proved the best previous bound of $O(Δ^2 n)$. We also study the convex and rectilinear crossing numbers, and prove an $O(Δn)$ bound for the convex crossing number of bounded pathwidth graphs, and a $\sum_v°(v)^2$ bound for the rectilinear crossing number of $K_{3,3}$-minor-free graphs.

The anagram-free chromatic number is a new graph parameter introduced independently Kamčev, Łuczak, and Sudakov (2017) and Wilson and Wood (2017). In this note, we show that there are planar graphs of pathwidth 3 with arbitrarily large anagram-free chromatic number. More specifically, we describe $2n$-vertex planar graphs of pathwidth 3 with anagram-free chromatic number $Ω(\log n)$. We also describe $kn$ vertex graphs with pathwidth $2k-1$ having anagram-free chromatic number in $Ω(k\log n)$.
Thickness and Antithickness of Graphs

This paper studies questions about duality between crossings and non-crossings in graph drawings via the notions of thickness and antithickness. The "thickness" of a graph $G$ is the minimum integer $k$ such that in some drawing of $G$, the edges can be partitioned into $k$ noncrossing subgraphs. The "antithickness" of a graph $G$ is the minimum integer $k$ such that in some drawing of $G$, the edges can be partitioned into $k$ thrackles, where a "thrackle" is a set of edges, each pair of which intersect exactly once. (Here edges with a common endvertex $v$ are considered to intersect at $v$.) So thickness is a measure of how close a graph is to being planar, whereas antithickness is a measure of how close a graph is to being a thrackle. This paper explores the relationship between the thickness and antithickness of a graph, under various graph drawing models, with an emphasis on extremal questions.

More Turán-Type Theorems for Triangles in Convex Point Sets

We study the following family of problems: Given a set of $n$ points in convex position, what is the maximum number triangles one can create having these points as vertices while avoiding certain sets of forbidden configurations. As forbidden configurations we consider all 8 ways in which a pair of triangles in such a point set can interact. This leads to 256 extremal Turán-type questions. We give nearly tight (within a $\log n$ factor) bounds for 248 of these questions and show that the remaining 8 questions are all asymptotically equivalent to Stein's longstanding tripod packing problem.

This paper studies graphs that have two tree decompositions with the property that every bag from the first decomposition has a bounded-size intersection with every bag from the second decomposition. We show that every graph in each of the following classes has a tree decomposition and a linear-sized path decomposition with bounded intersections: (1) every proper minor-closed class, (2) string graphs with a linear number of crossings in a fixed surface, (3) graphs with linear crossing number in a fixed surface. Here `linear size' means that the total size of the bags in the path decomposition is $O(n)$ for $n$-vertex graphs. We then show that every $n$-vertex graph that has a tree decomposition and a linear-sized path decomposition with bounded intersections has $O(\sqrt{n})$ treewidth. As a corollary, we conclude a new lower bound on the crossing number of a graph in terms of its treewidth. Finally, we consider graph classes that have two path decompositions with bounded intersections. Trees and outerplanar graphs have this property. But for the next most simple class, series parallel graphs, we show that no such result holds.
