The Ihara-zeta function and the spectrum of the join of two semi-regular bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, using matrix techniques, we compute the Ihara-zeta function and the number of spanning trees of the join of two semi-regular bipartite graphs. Furthermore, we show that the spectrum and the zeta function of the join of two semi-regular bipartite graphs can determine each other.

Partial-dual genus polynomials and signed intersection graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial-dual genus polynomial of a ribbon graph as a generating function that enumerates the partial duals of the ribbon graph by genus. It is analogous to the extensively-studied polynomial in topological graph theory that enumerates by genus all embeddings of a given graph. To investigate the partial-dual genus polynomial one only needs to focus on bouquets, i.e. ribbon graphs with only one vertex. In this paper, we shall further show that the partial-dual genus polynomial of a bouquet essentially depends on the signed intersection graph of the bouquet rather than on the bouquet itself. That is to say the bouquets with the same signed intersection graph will have the same partial-dual genus polynomial. We then prove that the partial-dual genus polynomial of a bouquet contains non-zero constant term if and only if its signed intersection graph is positive and bipartite. Finally we consider a conjecture posed by Gross, Mansour and Tucker. that there is no orientable ribbon graph whose partial-dual genus polynomial has only one non-constant term, we give a characterization of non-empty bouquets whose partial-dual genus polynomials have only one term by consider non-orientable case and orientable case separately.

Tutte polynomials of fan-like graphs with applications in benzenoid systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the computation of the Tutte polynomials of fan-like graphs and obtain expressions of their Tutte polynomials via generating functions. As applications, Tutte polynomials, in particular, the number of spanning trees, of two kinds of benzenoid systems, i.e. pyrene chains and triphenylene chains, are obtained.

Counterexamples to the interpolating conjecture on partial-dual genus polynomials of ribbon graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial-dual orientable genus polynomial and the partial-dual Euler genus polynomial. They showed that the partial-dual genus polynomial for an orientable ribbon graph is interpolating and gave an analogous conjecture: The partial-dual Euler-genus polynomial for any non-orientable ribbon graph is interpolating. In this paper, we first give some counterexamples to the conjecture. Then motivated by these counterexamples, we further find two infinite classes of counterexamples.

Excluded checkerboard colourable ribbon graph minors
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we first introduce the notions of checkerboard colourable minors for ribbon graphs motivated by the Eulerian ribbon graph minors, and two kinds of bipartite minors for ribbon graphs, one of which is the dual of the checkerboard colourable minors and the other is motivated by the bipartite minors of abstract graphs. Then we give an excluded minor characterization of the class of checkerboard colourable ribbon graphs, bipartite ribbon graphs, plane checkerboard colourable ribbon graphs and plane bipartite ribbon graphs.

Counterexamples to conjectures by Gross, Mansour and Tucker on partial-dual genus polynomials of ribbon graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gross, Mansour and Tucker introduced the partial-dual orientable genus polynomial and the partial-dual Euler genus polynomial. They computed these two partial-dual genus polynomials of four families of ribbon graphs, posed some research problems and made some conjectures. In this paper, we introduce the notion of signed sequences of bouquets and obtain the partial-dual Euler genus polynomials for all ribbon graphs with the number of edges less than 4 and the partial-dual orientable genus polynomials for all orientable ribbon graphs with the number of edges less than 5 in terms of signed sequences. We check all the conjectures and find a counterexample to the Conjecture 3.1 in their paper: There is no orientable ribbon graph having a non-constant partial-dual genus polynomial with only one non-zero coefficient. Motivated by this counterexample, we further find an infinite family of counterexamples to the conjecture. Moreover, we find a counterexample to the Conjecture 5.3 in their paper: The partial-dual Euler-genus polynomial for any non-orientable ribbon graph is interpolating.

Eulerian and bipartite binary delta-matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Delta-matroid theory is often thought of as a generalization of topological graph theory. It is well-known that an orientable embedded graph is bipartite if and only if its Petrie dual is orientable. In this paper, we first introduce the concepts of Eulerian and bipartite delta-matroids and then extend the result from embedded graphs to arbitrary binary delta-matroids. The dual of any bipartite embedded graph is Eulerian. We also extend the result from embedded graphs to the class of delta-matroids that arise as twists of binary matroids. Several related results are also obtained.

Characterization of regular checkerboard colourable twisted duals of ribbon graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The geometric dual of a cellularly embedded graph is a fundamental concept in graph theory and also appears in many other branches of mathematics. The partial dual is an essential generalization which can be obtained by forming the geometric dual with respect to only a subset of edges of a cellularly embedded graph. The twisted dual is a further generalization by combining the partial Petrial. Given a ribbon graph $G$, in this paper, we first characterize regular partial duals of the ribbon graph $G$ by using spanning quasi-tree and its related shorter marking arrow sequence set. Then we characterize checkerboard colourable partial Petrials for any Eulerian ribbon graph by using spanning trees and a related notion of adjoint set. Finally we give a complete characterization of all regular checkerboard colourable twisted duals of a ribbon graph, which solve a problem raised by Ellis-Monaghan and Moffatt [T. Am. Math. Soc., 364(3) (2012), 1529-1569].

Checkerboard colourable twisted duals
In this note we show that any embedded graph has a checkerboard colourable twisted dual and any Eulerian embedded graph has a checkerboard colourable partial Petrial, answering questions posed by Ellis-Monaghan and Moffatt. The proofs are based on orientations of their medial graphs and orientations of boundary components of their corresponding ribbon graphs. The arrow presentations of ribbon graphs are also used. We also obtain two related results.

Characterizations of Eulerian and even-face partial duals of ribbon graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Huggett and Moffatt characterized all bipartite partial duals of a plane graph in terms of all-crossing directions of its medial graph. Then Metsidik and Jin characterized all Eulerian partial duals of a plane graph in terms of semi-crossing directions of its medial graph. Plane graphs are ribbon graphs with genus 0. In this paper, we shall first extend Huggett and Moffatt's result to any orientable ribbon graph and provide an example to show that it is not true for non-orientable ribbon graphs. Then we characterize all Eulerian partial duals of any ribbon graph in terms of crossing-total directions of its medial graph, which are much more simple than semi-crossing directions.

Several extreme coefficients of the Tutte polynomial of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $t_{i,j}$ be the coefficient of $x^iy^j$ in the Tutte polynomial $T(G;x,y)$ of a connected bridgeless and loopless graph $G$ with order $n$ and size $m$. It is trivial that $t_{0,m-n+1}=1$ and $t_{n-1,0}=1$. In this paper, we obtain expressions of another eight extreme coefficients $t_{i,j}$'s with $(i,j)=(0,m-n)$,$(0,m-n-1)$,$(n-2,0)$,$(n-3,0)$,$(1,m-n)$,$(1,m-n-1)$,$(n-2,1)$ and $(n-3,1)$ in terms of small substructures of $G$. Among them, the former four can be obtained by using coefficients of the highest, second highest and third highest terms of chromatic or flow polynomials, and vice versa. We also discuss their duality property and their specializations to extreme coefficients of the Jones polynomial.

A formula for the number of the spanning trees of line graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a loopless graph and $\mathcal{T}(G)$ be the set of all spanning trees of $G$. Let $L(G)$ be the line graph of the graph $G$ and $t(L(G))$ be the number of spanning trees of $L(G)$. Then, by using techniques from electrical networks, we obtain the following formula: $$ t(L(G)) = \frac{1}{\prod_{v\in V}d^2(v)}\sum_{T\subseteq \mathcal{T}(G)}\big[\prod_{e = xy\in T}d(x)d(y)\big]\big[\prod_{e = uv\in E\backslash T}[d(u)+d(v)]\big]. $$ As a result, we provide a very simple and different proof of the formula on the number of spanning trees of some irregular line graphs, and give a positive answer to a conjecture proposed by Yan [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 120 (2013) no. 7, 1642-1648]. By applying our formula we also derive the number of spanning trees of circulant line graphs.

When will the crossing number of an alternating link decrease by two via a crossing change?
Let $D$ be a reduced alternating diagram of a non-split link $L$ and $\tilde{L}$ be the link whose diagram is obtained from $D$ by a crossing change. If $\tilde{L}$ is alternating, then $c(\tilde{L})\leq c(L)-2$. In this paper we explore when $c(\tilde{L})=c(L)-2$ holds and obtain a simple sufficient and necessary condition in terms of plane graphs corresponding to $L$. This result is obtained via analyzing the behavior of the Tutte polynomial of the signed plane graph corresponding to $\tilde{L}$.

A relationship between two graphical models of the Kauffman polynomial
There are two oriented 4-valent graphical models for the Kauffman polynomial: one (HJ) is obtained by combining Jaeger's formula and Kauffman-Vogel model for the Homflypt polynomial; the other (WF) is obtained by combining Kauffman-Vogel model for the Kauffman polynomial and Wu's formula. The main goal of this paper is to explore the relationship between the two models. We find that there is an one-to-many correspondence between the terms of HJ model and the terms of WF model. In addition, we investigate the relation between trivalent graphical models and 4-valent graphical models of both the Homflypt and Kauffman polynomials, and observe that there is a bijection between the terms of the two models.

The replacements of signed graphs and Kauffman brackets of links
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a signed graph. Let $\hat{G}$ be the graph obtained from $G$ by replacing each edge $e$ by a chain or a sheaf. We first establish a relation between the $Q$-polynomial of $\hat{G}$[6] and the $W$-polynomial of $G$ [9]. Two special dual cases are derived from the relation, one of which has been studied in [8]. Based on the one to one correspondence between signed plane graphs and link diagrams, and the correspondence between the $Q$-polynomial of signed plane graph and the Kauffman bracket of link diagram, we can compute the Kauffman bracket of link diagram corresponding to $\hat{G}$ by means of the $W$-polynomial of $G$. By this way we use transfer matrix approach to compute the Kauffman bracket of rational links, and obtain their closed-form formulae. Finally we provide an example to point out that the relation we built can be used to deal with a wide type of link family.
