Reduced chromatic graph cohomology
In this paper we give a new characterization of the h-vector of the chromatic polynomial of a graph. We introduce reduced chromatic cohomology of a graph and show that h_i are its Betti numbers. We then discuss various combinatorial properties of these cohomologies. In particular we prove that these cohomologies depend only on the matroid type of the graph and describe their relationship to the regular chromatic cohomologies.

Lefschetz decomposition and the cd-index of fans
The goal of this article is to give a Lefschetz type decomposition for the cd-index of a complete fan. To a complete simplicial fan one can associate a toric variety X, the even Betti numbers h_i of X and the numbers g_i = h_i-h_{i-1}. If the fan is projective, then non-negativity of g_i follows from the Lefschetz decomposition of the cohomology. In the case of a nonsiplicial complete fan one can analogously compute the flag h-numbers h_S and, by a change of variable formula, the cd-index. We give an analogue of the Lefschetz operation for the cd-index. This gives another proof of the non-negativity of the cd-index for complete fans.

Some families of componentwise linear monomial ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let R=k[x_1,...,x_n] be a polynomial ring over a field k. Let J={j_1,...,j_t} be a subset of [n]={1,...,n}, and let m_J denote the ideal (x_{j_1},...,x_{j_t}) of R. Given subsets J_1,...,J_s of [n] and positive integers a_1,...,a_s, we study ideals of the form I=m_{J_1}^{a_1} \cap ... \cap m_{J_s}^{a_s}. These ideals arise naturally, for example, in the study of fat points, tetrahedral curves, and Alexander duality of squarefree monomial ideals. Our main focus is determining when ideals of this form are componentwise linear. Using polymatroidality, we prove that I is always componentwise linear when s <= 3 or when J_i \cup J_j = [n] for all i \neq j. When s >= 4, we give examples to show that I may or may not be componentwise linear. We apply these results to ideals of small sets of general fat points in multiprojective space, and we extend work of Fatabbi, Lorenzini, Valla, and the first author by computing the graded Betti numbers in the s=2 case. Since componentwise linear ideals satisfy the Multiplicity Conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan when char(k)=0, our work also yields new cases in which this conjecture holds.

Invariant d'Hermite des jacobiennes de graphes pondérés
Published in L'Enseignement Mathématique 52, 3-4 (2006) 255-266 • Search Publication
To any weighted graph of first Betti number b is naturally associated a lattice of dimension b, definite in a similar way that the jacobian for a Riemann surface. This class of lattices generated by graphs is particularly interesting. We show here an upperbound of the Hermite invariant of such a lattice according to b whose order is ln b. This order is optimal : it is realized by the Hermite invariant of the jacobian of a systolicly economic graph.

Ehrhart polynomials and stringy Betti numbers
Published in Math. Ann. 333 (2005), no. 4, 787--795. • Search Publication
We study the connection between stringy Betti numbers of Gorenstein toric varieties and the generating functions of the Ehrhart polynomials of certain polyhedral regions. We use this point of view to give counterexamples to Hibi's conjecture on the unimodality of delta-vectors of reflexive polytopes.

Splittable ideals and the resolutions of monomial ideals
We provide a new combinatorial approach to study the minimal free resolutions of edge ideals, that is, quadratic square-free monomial ideals. With this method we can recover most of the known results on resolutions of edge ideals with fuller generality, and at the same time, obtain new results. Past investigations on the resolutions of edge ideals usually reduced the problem to computing the dimensions of reduced homology or Koszul homology groups. Our approach circumvents the highly nontrivial problem of computing the dimensions of these groups and turns the problem into combinatorial questions about the associated simple graph. We also show that our technique extends successfully to the study of graded Betti numbers of arbitrary square-free monomial ideals viewed as facet ideals of simplicial complexes.

Resonance, linear syzygies, Chen groups, and the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand correspondence

If \A is a complex hyperplane arrangement, with complement X, we show that the Chen ranks of G=π_1(X) are equal to the graded Betti numbers of the linear strand in a minimal, free resolution of the cohomology ring A=H^*(X,\k), viewed as a module over the exterior algebra E on \A: θ_k(G) = \dim_\k Tor^E_{k-1}(A,\k)_k, where \k is a field of characteristic 0, and k\ge 2. The Chen ranks conjecture asserts that, for k sufficiently large, θ_k(G) =(k-1) \sum_{r\ge 1} h_r \binom{r+k-1}{k}, where h_r is the number of r-dimensional components of the projective resonance variety R^1(\A). Our earlier work on the resolution of A over E and the above equality yield a proof of the conjecture for graphic arrangements. Using results on the geometry of R^1(\A) and a localization argument, we establish the conjectured lower bound for the Chen ranks of an arbitrary arrangement \A. Finally, we show that there is a polynomial P(t) of degree equal to the dimension of R^1(\A), such that θ_k(G) = P(k), for k sufficiently large.

The Betti numbers of forests
This paper produces a recursive formula of the Betti numbers of certain Stanley-Reisner ideals (graph ideals associated to forests). This gives a purely combinatorial definition of the projective dimension of these ideals, which turns out to be a new numerical invariant of forests. Finally, we propose a possible extension of this invariant to general graphs.

We study some new isoperimetric inequalities on graphs. We etablish a relation between the volume entropy (or asymptotic volume), the systole and the first Betti number of weighted graphs. We also find bounds for the volume, associated to some special measure, of the unit ball for the stable norm of graphs.

Intersection cohomology of hypertoric varieties
Published in Journal of Algebraic Geometry 16 (2007), 39-63 • View PublicationBIB
A hypertoric variety is a quaternionic analogue of a toric variety. Just as the topology of toric varieties is closely related to the combinatorics of polytopes, the topology of hypertoric varieties interacts richly with the combinatorics of hyperplane arrangements and matroids. Using finite field methods, we obtain combinatorial descriptions of the Betti numbers of hypertoric varieties, both for ordinary cohomology in the smooth case and intersection cohomology in the singular case. We also introduce a conjectural ring structure on the intersection cohomology of a hypertoric variety.

Betti Numbers of Graph Ideals
In this thesis we investigate certain types of monomial ideals of polynomial rings over fields. We are interested in minimal free resolutions of these ideals (or equivalently the quotients of the polynomial ring by the ideals) considered as modules over the polynomial ring. There is no simple method of finding such resolutions but in the case of Stanley-Reisner ideals Hochster's formula and its variants provide a way to compute the Betti numbers of these resolutions. Even with these formulae it is not in general possible to find especially explicit or useful descriptions of the Betti numbers. However we restrict our attention to those ideals which are generated by square free monomials of degree 2. The purpose of this is to associate these ideals with graphs. This provides a link between algebraic objects, the monomial ideals, and combinatorial objects, the graphs. This correspondence enables us do define new numerical invariants of graphs: the Betti numbers and projective dimension of the corresponding graph ideals. We find explicit descriptions of the Betti numbers and projective dimensions of cycles and forests. In the case of forests we find a method of describing the Betti numbers in terms of the Betti numbers of subforests. This also leads to a description of the projective dimension of a forests in terms of the projective dimensions of its subforests. It turns out that the projective dimension of forests can be defined in purely combinatorial terms and hence it gives a new combinatorial numerical invariant of forests.

Characteristic-independence of Betti numbers of graph ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner ideals generated in degree 2. We show that the first six Betti numbers do not depend on the characteristic of the ground field. We also show that, if the number of variables $n$ is at most 10, all Betti numbers are independent of the ground field. For $n=11$, there exists precisely 4 examples in which the Betti numbers depend on the ground field. This is equivalent to the statement that the homology of flag complexes with at most 10 vertices is torsion free and that there exists precisely 4 non-isomorphic flag complexes with 11 vertices whose homology has torsion. In each of the 4 examples mentioned above the 8th Betti numbers depend on the ground field and so we conclude that the highest Betti number which is always independent of the ground field is either 6 or 7; if the former is true then we show that there must exist a graph with 12 vertices whose 7th Betti number depends on the ground field.

Intersection Cohomology of reductive varieties

We extend the methods developed in our earlier work to algorithmically compute the intersection cohomology Betti numbers of reductive varieties. These form a class of highly symmetric varieties that includes equivariant compactifications of reductive groups. Thereby, we extend a well-known algorithm for toric varieties.

Representations of wreath products on cohomology of De Concini-Procesi compactifications
Published in Intern. Math. Res. Notices 2004:20 (2004), 983-1021 • Search Publication
The wreath product W(r,n) of the cyclic group of order r and the symmetric group S_n acts on the corresponding projective hyperplane complement, and on its wonderful compactification as defined by De Concini and Procesi. We give a formula for the characters of the representations of W(r,n) on the cohomology groups of this compactification, extending the result of Ginzburg and Kapranov in the r=1 case. As a corollary, we get a formula for the Betti numbers which generalizes the result of Yuzvinsky in the r=2 case. Our method involves applying to the nested-set stratification a generalization of Joyal's theory of tensor species, which includes a link between polynomial functors and plethysm for general r. We also give a new proof of Lehrer's formula for the representations of W(r,n) on the cohomology groups of the hyperplane complement.

Distributive Lattices, Bipartite Graphs and Alexander Duality
Published • View PublicationBIB
A certain squarefree monomial ideal $H_P$ arising from a finite partially ordered set $P$ will be studied from viewpoints of both commutative algebra and combinatorics. First, it is proved that the defining ideal of the Rees algebra of $H_P$ possesses a quadratic Gröbner basis. Thus in particular all powers of $H_P$ have linear resolutions. Second, the minimal free graded resolution of $H_P$ will be constructed explicitly and a combinatorial formula to compute the Betti numbers of $H_P$ will be presented. Third, by using the fact that the Alexander dual of the simplicial complex $Δ$ whose Stanley--Reisner ideal coincides with $H_P$ is Cohen--Macaulay, all the Cohen--Macaulay bipartite graphs will be classified.

Decomposing Hessenberg varieties over classical groups
Hessenberg varieties are a family of subvarieties of the flag variety, including the Springer fibers, the Peterson variety, and the entire flag variety itself. The seminal example arises from a problem in numerical analysis and consists for a fixed linear operator M of the full flags V_1 \subsetneq V_2 >... \subsetneq V_n in GL_n with M V_i contained in V_{i+1} for all i. In this paper I show that all Hessenberg varieties in type A_n and semisimple and regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties in types B_n,C_n, and D_n can be paved by affine spaces. Moreover, this paving is the intersection of a particular Bruhat decomposition with the Hessenberg variety. In type A_n, an equivalent description of the cells of the paving in terms of certain fillings of a Young diagram can be used to compute the Betti numbers of Hessenberg varieties. As an example, I show that the Poincare polynomial of the Peterson variety in A_n is \sum_{i =0}^{n-1} \binom{n-1}{i} x^{2i}.

Topological representations of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
There is a one-to-one correspondence between geometric lattices and the intersection lattices of arrangements of homotopy spheres. When the arrangements are essential and fully partitioned, Zaslavsky's enumeration of the cells of the arrangement still holds. An application of the theory shows that all minimal cellular resolutions of matroid Steiner ideals are bounded subcomplexes of homotopy sphere arrangements of the given matroid. As a result the Betti numbers of the ideal are computed and seen to be equivalent to Stanley's formula in the special case of face ideals of independence complexes of matroids.

How is a graph like a manifold?
In this article, we discuss some classical problems in combinatorics which can be solved by exploiting analogues between graph theory and the theory of manifolds. One well-known example is the McMullen conjecture, which was settled twenty years ago by Richard Stanley by interpreting certain combinatorial invariants of convex polytopes as the Betti numbers of a complex projective variety. Another example is the classical parallel redrawing problem, which turns out to be closely related to the problem of computing the second Betti number of a complex compact $(\C^*)^n$-manifold.
