Let q>1 and m>0 be relatively prime integers. We find an explicit period $ν_m(q)$ such that for any integers n>0 and r we have $[n+ν_m(q),r]_m(a)=[n,r]_m(a) (mod q)$ whenever a is an integer with $\gcd(1-(-a)^m,q)=1$, or a=-1 (mod q), or a=1 (mod q) and 2|m, where $[n,r]_m(a)=\sum_{k=r(mod m)}\binom{n}{k}a^k$. This is a further extension of a congruence of Glaisher.

Motivated by some binomial coefficients identities encountered in our approach to the enumeration of convex polyominoes, we prove some more general identities of the same type, one of which turns out to be related to a strange evaluation of ${}_3F_2$ of Gessel and Stanton.
Canonical characters on quasi-symmetric functions and bivariate Catalan numbers

Every character on a graded connected Hopf algebra decomposes uniquely as a product of an even character and an odd character (Aguiar, Bergeron, and Sottile, math.CO/0310016).
We obtain explicit formulas for the even and odd parts of the universal character on the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. They can be described in terms of Legendre's beta function evaluated at half-integers, or in terms of bivariate Catalan numbers:
$$ C(m,n)=\frac{(2m)!(2n)!}{m!(m+n)!n!}. $$
Properties of characters and of quasi-symmetric functions are then used to derive several interesting identities among bivariate Catalan numbers and in particular among Catalan numbers and central binomial coefficients.

We derive explicit Pieri-type multiplication formulas in the Grothendieck ring of a flag variety. These expand the product of an arbitrary Schubert class and a special Schubert class in the basis of Schubert classes. These special Schubert classes are indexed by a cycle which has either the form (k-p+1,k-p+2,...,k+1) or the form (k+p,k+p-1,...,k), and are pulled back from a Grassmannian projection. Our formulas are in terms of certain labeled chains in the k-Bruhat order on the symmetric group and are combinatorial in that they involve no cancellations. We also show that the multiplicities in the Pieri formula are naturally certain binomial coefficients.

Let F be a family of subsets of an n-element set not containing four distinct members such that A union B is contained in C intersect D. It is proved that the maximum size of F under this condition is equal to the sum of the two largest binomial coefficients of order n. The maximum families are also characterized. A LYM-type inequality for such families is given, too.

We prove various congruences for Catalan and Motzkin numbers as well as related sequences. The common thread is that all these sequences can be expressed in terms of binomial coefficients. Our techniques are combinatorial and algebraic: group actions, induction, and Lucas' congruence for binomial coefficients come into play. A number of our results settle conjectures of Benoit Cloitre and Reinhard Zumkeller. The Thue-Morse sequence appears in several contexts.
Sums of squares of binomial coefficients, with applications to Picard-Fuchs equations
For a fixed integer N, and fixed numbers b_1,...,b_N, we consider sequences, the nth term (a_n) of which is the sum of the squares of the terms in the expansion of (b_1 + ... + b_N)^n. In the case all b_i=1, we give a formula for a recurrence relation for the a_n. Otherwise we give an algorithm for finding a recurrence relation. As an application, we give the Picard-Fuchs equations for certain families of elliptic curves.

There is no field with only one element, yet there is a well-defined notion of what projective geometry over such a field means. This notion is familiar to experts and plays an interesting role behind the scenes in combinatorics and algebra, but it is rarely discussed as such. The purpose of this article is to bring it to the attention of a broader audience, as the solution to a puzzle about Gaussian binomial coefficients.
A probabilistic approach to $q$-polynomial coefficients, Euler and Stirling numbers
It is known that Bernoulli scheme of independent trials with two outcomes is connected with the binomial coefficients. The aim of this paper is to indicate stochastic processes which are connected with the $q$-polynomial coefficients (in particular, with the $q$-binomial coefficients, or the Gaussian polynomials), Stirling numbers of the first and the second kind, and Euler numbers in a natural way. A probabilistic approach allows us to give very simple proofs of some identities for these coefficients.
The method of characteristics, and "problem 89" of Graham, Knuth and Patashnik
We apply the method of characteristics for the solution of pde's to two combinatorial problems. The first is finding an explicit form for a distribution that arises in bio-informatics. The second is a question raised by Graham, Knuth and Patashnik abiout a sequence of generalized binomial coefficients. We find an exact formula, which factors in an interesting way, in the case where one of the six parameters of the problem vanishes. We also show that the associated polynomial sequence has real zeros only, provided that one parameter vanishes, and the other five are nonnegative.

Shelling and triangulating the (extra)ordinary polytope

Ordinary polytopes were introduced by Bisztriczky as a (nonsimplicial) generalization of cyclic polytopes. We show that the colex order of facets of the ordinary polytope is a shelling order. This shelling shares many nice properties with the shellings of simplicial polytopes. We also give a shallow triangulation of the ordinary polytope, and show how the shelling and the triangulation are used to compute the toric h-vector of the ordinary polytope. As one consequence, we get that the contribution from each shelling component to the h-vector is nonnegative. Another consequence is a combinatorial proof that the entries of the h-vector of any ordinary polytope are simple sums of binomial coefficients.

In this paper we study recurrences concerning the combinatorial sum $[n,r]_m=\sum_{k\equiv r (mod m)}\binom {n}{k}$ and the alternate sum $\sum_{k\equiv r (mod m)}(-1)^{(k-r)/m}\binom{n}{k}$, where m>0, $n\ge 0$ and r are integers. For example, we show that if $n\ge m-1$ then $$\sum_{i=0}^{\lfloor(m-1)/2\rfloor}(-1)^i\binom{m-1-i}i [n-2i,r-i]_m=2^{n-m+1}.$$ We also apply such results to investigate Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. Our approach depends heavily on an identity established by the author [Integers 2(2002)].
The Number of Convex Polyominoes and the Generating Function of Jacobi Polynomials

Lin and Chang gave a generating function of convex polyominoes with an $m+1$ by $n+1$ minimal bounding rectangle. Gessel showed that their result implies that the number of such polyominoes is $$ \frac{m+n+mn}{m+n}{2m+2n\choose 2m}-\frac{2mn}{m+n}{m+n\choose m}^2. $$ We show that this result can be derived from some binomial coefficients identities related to the generating function of Jacobi polynomials.

Let $n,p,k$ be three positive integers. We prove that the rational fractions of $q$: $${n \brack k}_{q} {}_3φ_{2} [ . {matrix}q^{1-k},q^{-p},q^{p-n} q,q^{1-n} {matrix}| q;q^{k+1}]\quad\textrm{and}\quad q^{(n-p)p}\qbi{n}{k}{q} {}_3φ_2[ . {matrix}q^{1-k},q^{-p},q^{p-n} q,q^{1-n} {matrix}|q;q] $$ are polynomials of $q$ with positive integer coefficients. This generalizes a recent result of Lassalle (Ann. Comb. 6(2002), no. 3-4, 399-405), in the same way as the classical $q$-binomial coefficients refine the ordinary binomial coefficients.
Rook numbers and the normal ordering problem

For an element $w$ in the Weyl algebra generated by $D$ and $U$ with relation $DU=UD+1$, the normally ordered form is $w=\sum c_{i,j}U^iD^j$. We demonstrate that the normal order coefficients $c_{i,j}$ of a word $w$ are rook numbers on a Ferrers board. We use this interpretation to give a new proof of the rook factorization theorem, which we use to provide an explicit formula for the coefficients $c_{i,j}$. We calculate the Weyl binomial coefficients: normal order coefficients of the element $(D+U)^n$ in the Weyl algebra. We extend all these results to the $q$-analogue of the Weyl algebra. We discuss further generalizations using $i$-rook numbers.

We define two finite q-analogs of certain multiple harmonic series with an arbitrary number of free parameters, and prove identities for these q-analogs, expressing them in terms of multiply nested sums involving the Gaussian binomial coefficients. Special cases of these identities--for example, with all parameters equal to 1--have occurred in the literature. The special case with only one parameter reduces to an identity for the divisor generating function, which has received some attention in connection with problems in sorting theory. The general case can be viewed as a duality result, reminiscent of the duality relation for the ordinary multiple zeta function.
A Combinatorial Interpretation of The Numbers $6(2n)! /n! (n+2)!$
It is well known that the numbers $(2m)! (2n)!/m! n! (m+n)!$ are integers, but in general there is no known combinatorial interpretation for them. When $m=0$ these numbers are the middle binomial coefficients $\binom{2n}{n}$, and when $m=1$ they are twice the Catalan numbers. In this paper, we give combinatorial interpretations for these numbers when $m=2$ or 3.

For ρ=1 or -1, we determine $\prod_{0<c<d, (d/c)=ρ} binomial coeff.{p-1}{\lfloor pc/d\rfloor}$ modulo p^2 in terms of Lucas numbers, the fundamental unit and the class number of E, where (d/c) is the Kronecker symbol.
A combinatorial proof of Sun's "curious" identity
A binomial coefficient identity due to Zhi-Wei Sun is the subject of half a dozen recent papers that prove it by various analytic techniques and establish a generalization. Here we give a simple proof that uses weight-reversing involutions on suitable configurations involving dominos and colorings. With somewhat more work, the method extends to the generalization also.
