Lower bounds for on-line graph colorings

We propose two strategies for Presenter in on-line graph coloring games. The first one constructs bipartite graphs and forces any on-line coloring algorithm to use $2\log_2 n - 10$ colors, where $n$ is the number of vertices in the constructed graph. This is best possible up to an additive constant. The second strategy constructs graphs that contain neither $C_3$ nor $C_5$ as a subgraph and forces $Ω(\frac{n}{\log n}^\frac{1}{3})$ colors. The best known on-line coloring algorithm for these graphs uses $O(n^{\frac{1}{2}})$ colors.
Upper bound on cubicity in terms of boxicity for graphs of low chromatic number

The boxicity (respectively cubicity) of a graph $G$ is the minimum non-negative integer $k$, such that $G$ can be represented as an intersection graph of axis-parallel $k$-dimensional boxes (respectively $k$-dimensional unit cubes) and is denoted by $box(G)$ (respectively $cub(G)$). It was shown by Adiga and Chandran (Journal of Graph Theory, 65(4), 2010) that for any graph $G$, $cub(G) \le$ box$(G) \left \lceil \log_2 α\right \rceil$, where $α= α(G)$ is the cardinality of the maximum independent set in $G$. In this note we show that $cub(G) \le 2 \left \lceil \log_2 χ(G) \right \rceil box(G) + χ(G) \left \lceil \log_2 α(G) \right \rceil $. In general, this result can provide a much better upper bound than that of Adiga and Chandran for graph classes with bounded chromatic number. For example, for bipartite graphs we get, $cub(G) \le 2 (box(G) + \left \lceil \log_2 α(G) \right \rceil )$.
Moreover we show that for every positive integer $k$, there exist graphs with chromatic number $k$, such that for every $ε> 0$, the value given by our upper bound is at most $(1+ε)$ times their cubicity. Thus, our upper bound is almost tight.

The paper consider an equivalence relation in the set of vertices of a bipartite graph. Some numerical characteristics showing the cardinality of equivalence classes are introduced. A combinatorial identity that is in relationship to these characteristics of the set of all bipartite graphs of the type $g=\langle R_g \cup C_g, E_g \rangle$ is formulated and proved, where $V=R_g \cup C_g$ is the set of vertices, $E_g$ is the set of edges of the graph $g$, $ |R_g |=m\ge 1$, $|C_g |= n\ge 1$, $|E_g |=k\ge 0$, $m,n$ and $k$ are integers.

The Estrada index of a graph $G$ is defined as $EE(G)=\sum_{i=1}^ne^{λ_i}$, where $λ_1,$ $ λ_2,\ldots, λ_n$ are the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of $G$. In this paper, we characterize the unique bipartite graph with maximum Estrada index among bipartite graphs with given matching number and given vertex-connectivity, edge-connectivity, respectively.

We give several characterizations of Mersenne primes (Theorem 1.1) and of primes for which 2 is a primitive root (Theorem 1.2). These characterizations involve group algebras, circulant matrices, binomial coefficients, and bipartite graphs.

We describe a way of assigning labels to the vertices of any undirected graph on up to $n$ vertices, each composed of $n/2+O(1)$ bits, such that given the labels of two vertices, and no other information regarding the graph, it is possible to decide whether or not the vertices are adjacent in the graph. This is optimal, up to an additive constant, and constitutes the first improvement in almost 50 years of an $n/2+O(\log n)$ bound of Moon. As a consequence, we obtain an induced-universal graph for $n$-vertex graphs containing only $O(2^{n/2})$ vertices, which is optimal up to a multiplicative constant, solving an open problem of Vizing from 1968. We obtain similar tight results for directed graphs, tournaments and bipartite graphs.

We study the dimer model for a planar bipartite graph N embedded in a disk, with boundary vertices on the boundary of the disk. Counting dimer configurations with specified boundary conditions gives a point in the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. Considering pairing probabilities for the double-dimer model gives rise to Grassmann analogues of Rhoades and Skandera's Temperley-Lieb immanants. The same problem for the (probably novel) triple-dimer model gives rise to the combinatorics of Kuperberg's webs and Grassmann analogues of Pylyavskyy's web immanants. This draws a connection between the square move of plabic graphs (or urban renewal of planar bipartite graphs), and Kuperberg's square reduction of webs. Our results also suggest that canonical-like bases might be applied to the dimer model.
We furthermore show that these functions on the Grassmannian are compatible with restriction to positroid varieties. Namely, our construction gives bases for the degree two and degree three components of the homogeneous coordinate ring of a positroid variety that are compatible with the cyclic group action.
Some results on minimum skew zero forcing sets, and skew zero forcing number
Let $G$ be a graph, and $Z$ a subset of its vertices, which we color black, while the remaining are colored white. We define the skew color change rule as follows: if $u$ is a vertex of $G$, and exactly one of its neighbors $v$, is white, then change the color of $v$ to black. A set $Z$ is a skew zero forcing set for $G$ if the application of the skew color change rule (as many times as necessary) will result in all the vertices in $G$ colored black. A set $Z$ is a minimum skew zero forcing set for $G$ if it is a skew zero forcing set for $G$ of least cardinality. The skew zero forcing number $\sZ (G)$ is the minimum of $|Z|$ over all skew zero forcing sets $Z$ for $G$.
In this paper we discuss graphs that have extreme skew zero forcing number. We characterize complete multipartite graphs in terms of $\sZ (G)$. We note relations between minimum skew zero forcing sets and matchings in some bipartite graphs, and in unicyclic graphs. We establish that the elements in the set of minimum skew zero forcing sets in certain bipartite graphs are the bases of a matroid.
Tree-depth and Vertex-minors
In a recent paper, Kwon and Oum claim that every graph of bounded rank-width is a pivot-minor of a graph of bounded tree-width (while the converse has been known true already before). We study the analogous questions for "depth" parameters of graphs, namely for the tree-depth and related new shrub-depth. We show that shrub-depth is monotone under taking vertex-minors, and that every graph class of bounded shrub-depth can be obtained via vertex-minors of graphs of bounded tree-depth. We also consider the same questions for bipartite graphs and pivot-minors.
A sharp refinement of a result of Alon, Ben-Shimon and Krivelevich on bipartite graph vertex sequences
We give a sharp refinement of a result of Alon, Ben-Shimon and Krivelevich. This gives a sufficient condition for a finite sequence of positive integers to be the vertex degree list of both parts of a bipartite graph. The condition depends only on the length of the sequence and its largest and smallest elements.

Given an integer weighted bipartite graph $\{G=(U\sqcup V, E), w:E\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}\}$ we consider the problems of finding all the edges that occur in some minimum weight matching of maximum cardinality and enumerating all the minimum weight perfect matchings. Moreover, we construct a subgraph $G_{cs}$ of $G$ which depends on an $ε$-optimal solution of the dual linear program associated to the assignment problem on $\{G,w\}$ that allows us to reduced this problems to their unweighed variants on $G_{cs}$. For instance, when $G$ has a perfect matching and we have an $ε$-optimal solution of the dual linear program associated to the assignment problem on $\{G,w\}$, we solve the problem of finding all the edges that occur in some minimum weight perfect matching in linear time on the number of edges. Therefore, starting from scratch we get an algorithm that solves this problem in time $O(\sqrt{n}m\log(nW))$, where $n=|U|\geq |V|$, $m=|E|$, and $W={\rm max}\{|w(e)|\, :\, e\in E\}$.
Generating Tatami Coverings Efficiently
We present two algorithms to list certain classes of monomino-domino coverings which conform to the \emph{tatami} restriction; no four tiles meet. Our methods exploit structural features of tatami coverings in order to create the lists in $O(1)$ time per covering. This is faster than known methods for generating certain classes of matchings in bipartite graphs.
We discuss tatami coverings of $n\times n$ grids with $n$ monominoes and $v$ vertical dominoes, as well as tatami coverings of a two-way infinitely-wide strip of constant height, subject to the constraint that they have a finite number of non-trivial structural "features".
These two classes are representative of two differing structural characterisations of tatami coverings which may be adapted to count other classes of tatami coverings or locally restricted matchings, such as tatami coverings of rectangles.

A $k$-uniform hypergraph $G=(V,E)$ is called odd-bipartite ([5]), if $k$ is even and there exists some proper subset $V_1$ of $V$ such that each edge of $G$ contains odd number of vertices in $V_1$. Odd-bipartite hypergraphs are generalizations of the ordinary bipartite graphs. We study the spectral properties of the connected odd-bipartite hypergraphs. We prove that the Laplacian H-spectrum and signless Laplacian H-spectrum of a connected $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ are equal if and only if $k$ is even and $G$ is odd-bipartite. We further give several spectral characterizations of the connected odd-bipartite hypergraphs. We also give a characterization for a connected $k$-uniform hypergraph whose Laplacian spectral radius and signless Laplacian spectral radius are equal, thus provide an answer to a question raised in [9]. By showing that the Cartesian product $G\Box H$ of two odd-bipartite $k$-uniform hypergraphs is still odd-bipartite, we determine that the Laplacian spectral radius of $G\Box H$ is the sum of the Laplacian spectral radii of $G$ and $H$, when $G$ and $H$ are both connected odd-bipartite.
The Algorithmic Complexity of Bondage and Reinforcement Problems in bipartite graphs

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph. A subset $D\subseteq V$ is a dominating set if every vertex not in $D$ is adjacent to a vertex in $D$. The domination number of $G$, denoted by $γ(G)$, is the smallest cardinality of a dominating set of $G$. The bondage number of a nonempty graph $G$ is the smallest number of edges whose removal from $G$ results in a graph with domination number larger than $γ(G)$. The reinforcement number of $G$ is the smallest number of edges whose addition to $G$ results in a graph with smaller domination number than $γ(G)$. In 2012, Hu and Xu proved that the decision problems for the bondage, the total bondage, the reinforcement and the total reinforcement numbers are all NP-hard in general graphs. In this paper, we improve these results to bipartite graphs.

The regular number of a graph G denoted by reg(G) is the minimum number of subsets into which the edge set of G can be partitioned so that the subgraph induced by each subset is regular. In this work we answer to the problem posed as an open problem in A. Ganesan et al. (2012) [3] about the complexity of determining the regular number of graphs. We show that computation of the regular number for connected bipartite graphs is NP-hard. Furthermore, we show that, determining whether reg(G) = 2 for a given connected 3-colorable graph G is NP-complete. Also, we prove that a new variant of the Monotone Not-All-Equal 3-Sat problem is NP-complete.

Let $G$ be a bipartite graph, and let $H$ be a bipartite graph with a fixed bipartition $(B_H,W_H)$. We consider three different, natural ways of forbidding $H$ as an induced subgraph in $G$. First, $G$ is $H$-free if it does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph. Second, $G$ is strongly $H$-free if $G$ is $H$-free or else has no bipartition $(B_G,W_G)$ with $B_H\subseteq B_G$ and $W_H\subseteq W_G$. Third, $G$ is weakly $H$-free if $G$ is $H$-free or else has at least one bipartition $(B_G,W_G)$ with $B_H\not\subseteq B_G$ or $W_H\not\subseteq W_G$. Lozin and Volz characterized all bipartite graphs $H$ for which the class of strongly $H$-free bipartite graphs has bounded clique-width. We extend their result by giving complete classifications for the other two variants of $H$-freeness.

Let k, p, q be positive integers with k < p < q+1. We prove that the maximum spectral radius of a simple bipartite graph obtained from the complete bipartite graph Kp,q of bipartition orders p and q by deleting k edges is attained when the deleting edges are all incident on a common vertex which is located in the partite set of order q. Our method is based on new sharp upper bounds on the spectral radius of bipartite graphs in terms of their degree sequences.
On the Spectrum of Wenger Graphs
Let $q=p^e$, where $p$ is a prime and $e\geq 1$ is an integer. For $m\geq 1$, let $P$ and $L$ be two copies of the $(m+1)$-dimensional vector spaces over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Consider the bipartite graph $W_m(q)$ with partite sets $P$ and $L$ defined as follows: a point $(p)=(p_1,p_2,\ldots,p_{m+1})\in P$ is adjacent to a line $[l]=[l_1,l_2,\ldots,l_{m+1}]\in L$ if and only if the following $m$ equalities hold: $l_{i+1} + p_{i+1}=l_{i}p_1$ for $i=1,\ldots, m$. We call the graphs $W_m(q)$ Wenger graphs. In this paper, we determine all distinct eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of $W_m(q)$ and their multiplicities. We also survey results on Wenger graphs.

Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices. We denote the largest signless Laplacian eigenvalue of $G$ by $q_1(G)$ and Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ by $μ_1(G)\ge\cdots\geμ_{n-1}(G)\geμ_n(G)=0$. It is a conjecture on Laplacian spread of graphs that $μ_1(G)-μ_{n-1}(G)\le n-1$ or equivalently $μ_1(G)+μ_1(\Gb)\le2n-1$. We prove the conjecture for bipartite graphs. Also we show that for any bipartite graph $G$, $μ_1(G)μ_1(\Gb)\le n(n-1)$. Aouchiche and Hansen [A survey of Nordhaus--Gaddum type relations, Discrete Appl. Math. 161 (2013), 466--546] conjectured that %for any graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, $q_1(G)+q_1(\Gb)\le3n-4$ and $q_1(G)q_1(\Gb)\le2n(n-2)$. We prove the former and disprove the latter by constructing a family of graphs $H_n$ where $q_1(H_n)q_1(\ov{H_n})$ is about $2.15n^2+O(n)$.
$K_{s,t}$-saturated bipartite graphs
An $n$-by-$n$ bipartite graph is $H$-saturated if the addition of any missing edge between its two parts creates a new copy of $H$. In 1964, Erdős, Hajnal and Moon made a conjecture on the minimum number of edges in a $K_{s,s}$-saturated bipartite graph. This conjecture was proved independently by Wessel and Bollobás in a more general, but ordered, setting: they showed that the minimum number of edges in a $K_{(s,t)}$-saturated bipartite graph is $n^2-(n-s+1)(n-t+1)$, where $K_{(s,t)}$ is the "ordered" complete bipartite graph with $s$ vertices in the first color class and $t$ vertices in the second. However, the very natural question of determining the minimum number of edges in the unordered $K_{s,t}$-saturated case remained unsolved. This problem was considered recently by Moshkovitz and Shapira who also conjectured what its answer should be. In this short paper we give an asymptotically tight bound on the minimum number of edges in a $K_{s,t}$-saturated bipartite graph, which is only smaller by an additive constant than the conjecture of Moshkovitz and Shapira. We also prove their conjecture for $K_{2,3}$-saturation, which was the first open case.
