Let $G$ and $H$ be two simple graphs and let $G*H$ denotes the graph theoretical product of $G$ by $H$. In this paper we provide some results on graded Betti numbers, Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, projective dimension, $h$-vector, and Hilbert series of $G*H$ in terms of that information of $G$ and $H$. To do this, we will provide explicit formulae to compute graded Betti numbers, $h$-vector, and Hilbert series of disjoint union of complexes. Also we will prove that the family of graphs whose regularity equal the maximum number of pairwise $3$-disjoint edges, is closed under product of graphs.

We show that the co-chordal cover number of a graph G gives an upper bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the associated edge ideal. Several known combinatorial upper bounds of regularity for edge ideals are then easy consequences of covering results from graph theory, and we derive new upper bounds by looking at additional covering results.

A graph $G$ is well-covered if it has no isolated vertices and all the maximal independent sets have the same cardinality. If furthermore two times this cardinality is equal to $|V(G)|$, the graph $G$ is called very well-covered. The class of very well-covered graphs contains bipartite well-covered graphs. Recently in \cite{CRT} it is shown that a very well-covered graph $G$ is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if it is pure shellable. In this article we improve this result by showing that $G$ is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if it is pure vertex decomposable. In addition, if $I(G)$ denotes the edge ideal of $G$, we show that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $R/I(G)$ is equal to the maximum number of pairwise 3-disjoint edges of $G$. This improves Kummini's result on unmixed bipartite graphs.

The algebra of basic covers of a graph G, denoted by \A(G), was introduced by Juergen Herzog as a suitable quotient of the vertex cover algebra. In this paper we show that if the graph is bipartite then \A(G) is a homogeneous algebra with straightening laws and thus is Koszul. Furthermore, we compute the Krull dimension of \A(G) in terms of the combinatorics of G. As a consequence we get new upper bounds on the arithmetical rank of monomial ideals of pure codimension 2. Finally, we characterize the Cohen-Macaulay property and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the edge ideal of a certain class of graphs.
Regularity via topology of the lcm-lattice for $C_4$-free graphs
We study the topology of the lcm-lattice of edge ideals and derive upper bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the ideals. In this context it is natural to restrict to the family of graphs with no induced 4-cycle in their complement. Using the above method we obtain sharp upper bounds on the regularity when the complement is a chordal graph, or a cycle, or when the primal graph is claw free with no induced 4-cycle in its complement. For the later family we show that the second power of the edge ideal has a linear resolution.

Let G be a bipartite graph with edge ideal I(G) whose quotient ring R/I(G) is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. We prove: (1) the independence complex of G must be vertex decomposable, and (2) the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of R/I(G) can be determined from the invariants of G.

If C is a clutter with n vertices and q edges whose clutter matrix has column vectors V={v1,...,vq}, we call C an Ehrhart clutter if {(v1,1),...,(vq,1)} is a Hilbert basis. Letting A(P) be the Ehrhart ring of P=conv(V), we are able to show that if A is the clutter matrix of a uniform, unmixed MFMC clutter C, then C is an Ehrhart clutter and in this case we provide sharp bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of A(P). Motivated by the Conforti-Cornuejols conjecture on packing problems, we conjecture that if C is both ideal and the clique clutter of a perfect graph, then C has the MFMC property. We prove this conjecture for Meyniel graphs, by showing that the clique clutters of Meyniel graphs are Ehrhart clutters. In much the same spirit, we provide a simple proof of our conjecture when C is a uniform clique clutter of a perfect graph. We close with a generalization of Ehrhart clutters as it relates to total dual integrality.

Each partition $λ= (λ_1, λ_2, ..., λ_n)$ determines a so-called Ferrers tableau or, equivalently, a Ferrers bipartite graph. Its edge ideal, dubbed Ferrers ideal, is a squarefree monomial ideal that is generated by quadrics. We show that such an ideal has a 2-linear minimal free resolution, i.e. it defines a small subscheme. In fact, we prove that this property characterizes Ferrers graphs among bipartite graphs. Furthermore, using a method of Bayer and Sturmfels, we provide an explicit description of the maps in its minimal free resolution: This is obtained by associating a suitable polyhedral cell complex to the ideal/graph. Along the way, we also determine the irredundant primary decomposition of any Ferrers ideal. We conclude our analysis by studying several features of toric rings of Ferrers graphs. In particular we recover/establish formulae for the Hilbert series, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, and the multiplicity of these rings. While most of the previous works in this highly investigated area of research involve path counting arguments, we offer here a new and self-contained approach based on results from Gorenstein liaison theory.

For a simplicial complex X and a field K, let h_i(X)=\dim \tilde{H}_i(X;K). It is shown that if X,Y are complexes on the same vertex set, then for all k h_{k-1}(X\cap Y) \leq \sum_{σ\in Y} \sum_{i+j=k} h_{i-1}(X[σ])\cdot h_{j-1}(\lk(Y,σ)) . A simplicial complex X is d-Leray over K, if h_i(Y)=0 for all induced subcomplexes Y \subset X and i \geq d. Let L_K(X) denote the minimal d such that X is d-Leray over K. The above theorem implies that if X,Y are simplicial complexes on the same vertex set then L_K(X \cap Y) \leq L_K(X) +L_K(Y). Reformulating this inequality in commutative algebra terms, we obtain the following result conjectured by Terai: If I,J are square-free monomial ideals in S=K[x_1,...,x_n], then reg(I+J) \leq reg(I)+reg(J)-1 where reg(I) denotes the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of I.

Combining a selection of tools from modern algebraic geometry, representation theory, the classical invariant theory of binary forms, together with explicit calculations with hypergeometric series and Feynman diagrams, we obtain the following interrelated results. A Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity bound and a projective normality result for the locus of hypersufaces that are equally supported on two hyperplanes. The surjectivity of an equivariant map between two plethystic compositions of symmetric powers; a statement which is reminiscent of the Foulkes-Howe conjecture. The nonvanishing of even transvectants of exact powers of generic binary forms. The nonvanishing of a collection of symmetric functions defined by sums over magic squares and transportation matrices with nonnegative integer entries. An explicit set of generators, in degree three, for the ideal of the coincident root locus of binary forms with only two roots of equal multiplicity.
Small schemes and varieties of minimal degree

We prove that if X is any 2-regular projective scheme (in the sense of Castelnuovo-Mumford) then X is "small". This means that if L is a linear space and Y:= L\cap X is finite, then Y is "linearly independent" in the sense that the dimension of the linear span of Y is 1+deg Y. The converse is true and well-known for finite schemes, but false in general. The main result of this paper is that the converse, "small implies 2-regular", is also true for reduced projective schemes (algebraic sets). This is proven by means of a delicate geometric analysis, leading to a complete classification: we show that the components of a small algebraic set are varieties of minimal degree, meeting in a particularly simple way. From the classification one can show that if X is 2-regular, then so is X_{red}, and so also is the projection of X from any point of X.
Our results extend the Del Pezzo-Bertini classification of varieties of minimal degree, the characterization of these as the varieties of regularity 2 by Eisenbud-Goto, and the construction of 2-regular square-free monomial ideals by Fröberg.

The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a module gives a rough measure of its complexity. We bound the regularity of a module given a system of approximating modules whose regularities are known. Such approximations can arise naturally for modules constructed by inductive combinatorial means. We apply these methods to bound the regularity of ideals constructed as combinations of linear ideals and the module of derivations of a hyperplane arrangement as well as to give degree bounds for invariants of finite groups.
On the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of products of ideal sheaves
In this paper we give bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of products of ideals and ideal sheaves. In particular, we show that the regularity of a product of ideals is bounded by the sum of the regularities of its factors if the corresponding schemes intersect in a finite set of points. We also show how approximations of sheaves can be used to bound the regularity of an arrangement of two-planes in projective space.

We show that the ideal of an arrangement of d linear subspaces of projective space is d-regular in the sense of Castelnuovo and Mumford, answering a question of B. Sturmfels. In particular this implies that the ideal of an arrangement of d subspaces is generated in degrees less than or equal to d.
