We establish, for the character table of the symmetric group, the positivity of the row sums indexed by irreducible characters, when restricted to various subsets of the conjugacy classes. A notable example is that of partitions with all parts odd. More generally, we study representations related to the conjugacy action of the symmetric group. These arise as sums of submodules induced from centraliser subgroups, and their Frobenius characteristics have elegant descriptions, often as a multiplicity-free sum of power-sum symmetric functions. We describe a general framework in which such representations, and consequently such linear combinations of power-sums, can be analysed. The conjugacy action for the symmetric group, and more generally for a large class of groups, is known to contain every irreducible. We find other representations of dimension $n!$ with this property, including a twisted analogue of the conjugacy action.

In the classic "Concrete Math", by Graham, Patashnik and Knuth, it is stated that "The numbers in Pascal's triangle satisfy, practically speaking, infinitely many identities, so it is not too surprising that we can find some surprising relationships by looking closely." The aim of this note is to indicate that a similar statement seems to hold for the character tables of the symmetric groups $S_n$. Just as important, it is a case-study in using a computer algebra system to prove deep identities, way beyond the ability of mere humans. This article is accomanied by a Maple pacgage, Sn, and ample output, avaialble from the webpage http://www.math.rutgers.edu/~zeilberg/mamarim/mamarimhtml/sn.html .
Combinatorial description of the cohomology of the affine flag variety

We construct the affine version of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra, called the affine FK algebra, to investigate the combinatorics of affine Schubert calculus for type $A$. We introduce Murnaghan-Nakayama elements and Dunkl elements in the affine FK algebra. We show that they are commutative as Bruhat operators, and the commutative algebra generated by these operators is isomorphic to the cohomology of the affine flag variety. We show that the cohomology of the affine flag variety is product of the cohomology of an affine Grassmannian and a flag variety, which are generated by MN elements and Dunkl elements respectively. The Schubert classes in cohomology of the affine Grassmannian (resp. the flag variety) can be identified with affine Schur functions (resp. Schubert polynomials) in a quotient of the polynomial ring. Affine Schubert polynomials, polynomial representatives of the Schubert class in the cohomology of the affine flag variety, can be defined in the product of two quotient rings using the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand operators interpreted as divided difference operators acting on the affine Fomin-Kirillov algebra. As for other applications, we obtain Murnaghan-Nakayama rules both for the affine Schubert polynomials and affine Stanley symmetric functions. We also define $k$-strong-ribbon tableaux from Murnaghan-Nakayama elements to provide a new formula of $k$-Schur functions. This formula gives the character table of the representation of the symmetric group whose Frobenius characteristic image is the $k$-Schur function.
Almost Difference Sets, Normally Regular Digraphs and Cyclotomic Schemes from Cyclotomy of Order Twelve
Using cyclotomic classes of order twelve for certain finite fields, we construct an infinite family of almost difference sets and normally regular graphs applying the theory of cyclotomy. We show that in each of these fields neither the multiplicative cyclic subgroup $C$ of index twelve nor $C\cup \{0\}$ forms an almost difference set, but a union of cosets of $C$ provides us an almost difference set. We also calculate the intersection numbers and character tables of cyclotomic association schemes of class two, three and four obtained from these fields.
Submatrices of character tables and basic sets

In this investigation of character tables of finite groups we study basic sets and associated representation theoretic data for complementary sets of conjugacy classes. For the symmetric groups we find unexpected properties of characters on restricted sets of conjugacy classes, like beautiful combinatorial determinant formulae for submatrices of the character table and Cartan matrices with respect to basic sets; we observe that similar phenomena occur for the transition matrices between power sum symmetric functions to bounded partitions and the $k$-Schur functions introduced by Lapointe and Morse. Arithmetic properties of the numbers occurring in this context are studied via generating functions.
Foulkes Characters, Eulerian Idempotents, and an Amazing Matrix

John Holte [16] introduced a family of "amazing matrices" which give the transition probabilities of "carries" when adding a list of numbers. It was subsequently shown that these same matrices arise in the combinatorics of the Veronese embedding of commutative algebra [4,6,7] and in the analysis of riffle shuffling [6,7]. We find that the left eigenvectors of these matrices form the Foulkes character table of the symmetric group and the right eigenvectors are the Eulerian idempotents introduced by Loday [20] in work on Hochschild homology. The connections give new closed formulae for Foulkes characters and allow explicit computation of natural correlation functions in the original carries problem.
Character tables of association schemes based on attenuated spaces

The set of subspaces of a given dimension in an attenuated space has a structure of a symmetric association scheme and this association scheme is called an association scheme based on an attenuated space. Association schemes based on attenuated spaces are generalizations of Grassmann schemes and bilinear forms schemes, and also $q$-analogues of non-binary Johnson schemes. Wang, Guo and Li computed the intersection numbers of association schemes based on attenuated spaces. The aim of this paper is to compute character tables of association schemes based on attenuated spaces using the method of Tarnanen, Aaltonen and Goethals. Moreover, we also prove that association schemes based on attenuated spaces include as a special case the $m$-flat association scheme, which is defined on the set of cosets of subspaces of a constant dimension in a vector space over a finite field.

We give an extension of the classical Schensted correspondence to the case of ribbon tableaux, where ribbons are allowed to be of different sizes. This is done by extending Fomin's growth diagram approach of the classical correspondence between permutations and pairs of standard tableaux of the same shape, in particular by allowing signs in the enumeration. As an application we give a combinatorial proof for the column sums of the character table of the symmetric group.

An association scheme is called skew-symmetric if it has no symmetric adjacency relations other than the diagonal one. In this paper, we study 4-class skew-symmetric association schemes. In J. Ma [On the nonexistence of skew-symmetric amorphous association schemes, submitted for publication], we discovered that their character tables fall into three types. We now determine their intersection matrices. We then determine the character tables and intersection numbers for 4-class skew-symmetric pseudocyclic association schemes, the only known examples of which are cyclotomic schemes. As a result, we answer a question raised by S. Y. Song [Commutative association schemes whose symmetrizations have two classes, J. Algebraic Combin. 5(1) 47-55, 1996]. We characterize and classify 4-class imprimitive skew-symmetric association schemes. We also prove that no 2-class Johnson scheme can admit a 4-class skew-symmetric fission scheme. Based on three types of character tables above, a short list of feasible parameters is generated.
Group-case commutative association schemes and their character tables
Leading towards the classification of primitive commutative association schemes as the ultimate goal, Bannai and some of his school have been trying to
* identify the major sources of (primitive) commutative association schemes,
* collect known group-case primitive commutative association schemes, and
* compute their character tables over the last twenty years. The construction of their character tables are important first step for a systematic study of such association schemes and towards the classification of those schemes. In this talk, we briefly survey the progress made in this direction of research, and list some open problems.

We determine invariants like the Smith normal form and the determinant for certain integral matrices which arise from the character tables of the symmetric groups S_n and their double covers. In particular, we give a simple computation, based on the theory of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions, of the determinant of the regular character table of S_n with respect to an integer r>1. This result had earlier been proved by Olsson in a longer and more indirect manner. As a consequence, we obtain a new proof of the Mathas' Conjecture on the determinant of the Cartan matrix of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra. When r is prime we determine the Smith normal form of the regular character table. Taking r large yields the Smith normal form of the full character table of S_n. Analogous results are then given for spin characters.
The Computational Complexity of Rules for the Character Table of S_n

The Murnaghan-Nakayama rule is the classical formula for computing the character table of S_n. Y. Roichman has recently discovered a rule for the Kazhdan-Lusztig characters of q-Hecke algebras of type A, which can also be used for the character table of S_n. For each of the two rules, we give an algorithm for computing entries in the character table of S_n. We then analyze the computational complexity of the two algorithms, and in the case of characters indexed by partitions in the (k,l)-hook, compare their complexities to each other. It turns out that the algorithm based on the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule requires far less operations than the other algorithm. We note the algorithms' complexities' relation to two enumeration problems of Young diagrams and Young tableaux.
