On a Vizing-type integer domination conjecture
Published in Theory and Applications of Graphs: Vol. 7 : Iss. 1 , Article 4, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
Given a simple graph $G$, a dominating set in $G$ is a set of vertices $S$ such that every vertex not in $S$ has a neighbor in $S$. Denote the domination number, which is the size of any minimum dominating set of $G$, by $γ(G)$. For any integer $k\ge 1$, a function $f : V (G) \rightarrow \{0, 1, . . ., k\}$ is called a \emph{$\{k\}$-dominating function} if the sum of its function values over any closed neighborhood is at least $k$. The weight of a $\{k\}$-dominating function is the sum of its values over all the vertices. The $\{k\}$-domination number of $G$, $γ_{\{k\}}(G)$, is defined to be the minimum weight taken over all $\{k\}$-domination functions. Brešar, Henning, and Klavžar (On integer domination in graphs and Vizing-like problems. \emph{Taiwanese J. Math.} {10(5)} (2006) pp. 1317--1328) asked whether there exists an integer $k\ge 2$ so that $γ_{\{k\}}(G\square H)\ge γ(G)γ(H)$. In this note we use the Roman $\{2\}$-domination number, $γ_{R2}$ of Chellali, Haynes, Hedetniemi, and McRae, (Roman $\{2\}$-domination. \emph{Discrete Applied Mathematics} {204} (2016) pp. 22-28.) to prove that if $G$ is a claw-free graph and $H$ is an arbitrary graph, then $γ_{\{2\}}(G\square H)\ge γ_{R2}(G\square H)\ge γ(G)γ(H)$, which also implies the conjecture for all $k\ge 2$.

The Chromatic Symmetric Functions of Trivially Perfect Graphs and Cographs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Richard P. Stanley defined the chromatic symmetric function of a simple graph and has conjectured that every tree is determined by its chromatic symmetric function. Recently, Takahiro Hasebe and the author proved that the order quasisymmetric functions, which are analogs of the chromatic symmetric functions, distinguish rooted trees. In this paper, using a similar method, we prove that the chromatic symmetric functions distinguish trivially perfect graphs. Moreover, we also prove that claw-free cographs, that is, $ \{K_{1,3},P_{4}\} $-free graphs belong to a known class of $ e $-positive graphs.
Conflict-free connection numbers of line graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A path in an edge-colored graph is called \emph{conflict-free} if it contains at least one color used on exactly one of its edges. An edge-colored graph $G$ is \emph{conflict-free connected} if for any two distinct vertices of $G$, there is a conflict-free path connecting them. For a connected graph $G$, the \emph{conflict-free connection number} of $G$, denoted by $cfc(G)$, is defined as the minimum number of colors that are required to make $G$ conflict-free connected. In this paper, we investigate the conflict-free connection numbers of connected claw-free graphs, especially line graphs. We first show that for an arbitrary connected graph $G$, there exists a positive integer $k$ such that $cfc(L^k(G))\leq 2$. Secondly, we get the exact value of the conflict-free connection number of a connected claw-free graph, especially a connected line graph. Thirdly, we prove that for an arbitrary connected graph $G$ and an arbitrary positive integer $k$, we always have $cfc(L^{k+1}(G))\leq cfc(L^k(G))$, with only the exception that $G$ is isomorphic to a star of order at least~$5$ and $k=1$. Finally, we obtain the exact values of $cfc(L^k(G))$, and use them as an efficient tool to get the smallest nonnegative integer $k_0$ such that $cfc(L^{k_0}(G))=2$.

Vizing-type bounds for graphs with induced subgraph restrictions
For any graphs $G$ and $H$, we say that a bound is of Vizing-type if $γ(G\square H)\geq c γ(G)γ(H)$ for some constant $c$. We show several bounds of Vizing-type for graphs $G$ with forbidden induced subgraphs. In particular, if $G$ is a triangle and $K_{1,r}$-free graph, then for any graph $H$, $γ(G\square H)\geq \frac{r}{2r-1}γ(G)γ(H)$. If $G$ is a $K_r$ and $P_5$-free graph for some integer $r\geq 2$, then for any graph $H$, $γ(G\square H)\geq \frac{r-1}{2r-3}γ(G)γ(H)$. We do this by bounding the power of $G$, $π(G)$. We show that if $G$ is claw-free and $P_6$-free or $K_4$ and $P_5$-free, then for any graph $H$, $γ(G\square H)\geq γ(G)γ(H)$. Furthermore, we show Vizing-type bounds in terms of the diameter of $G$.
Resolving Stanley's $e$-positivity of claw-contractible-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In Stanley's seminal 1995 paper on the chromatic symmetric function, he stated that there was no known graph that was not contractible to the claw and whose chromatic symmetric function was not $e$-positive, namely, not a positive linear combination of elementary symmetric functions. We resolve this by giving infinite families of graphs that are not contractible to the claw and whose chromatic symmetric functions are not $e$-positive. Moreover, one such family is additionally claw-free, thus establishing that the $e$-positivity of chromatic symmetric functions is in general not dependent on the existence of an induced claw or of a contraction to a claw.

Decycling Number of Linear Graphs of Trees
The decycling number of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of vertices whose removal from $G$ results in an acyclic subgraph. It is known that determining the decycling number of a graph $G$ is equivalent to finding the maximum induced forests of $G$. The line graphs of trees are the claw-free block graphs. These graphs have been used by Erdős, Saks and Sós to construct graphs with a given number of edges and vertices whose maximum induced tree is very small. In this paper, we give bounds on the decycling number of line graphs of trees and construct extremal trees to show that these bounds are the best possible. We also give bounds on the decycling number of line graph of $k$-ary trees and determine the exact the decycling number of line graphs of perfect $k$-ary trees.
Lovász-Schrijver PSD-operator on Claw-Free Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The subject of this work is the study of $\LS_+$-perfect graphs defined as those graphs $G$ for which the stable set polytope $\stab(G)$ is achieved in one iteration of Lovász-Schrijver PSD-operator $\LS_+$, applied to its edge relaxation $\estab(G)$. In particular, we look for a polyhedral relaxation of $\stab(G)$ that coincides with $\LS_+(\estab(G))$ and $\stab(G)$ if and only if $G$ is $\LS_+$-perfect. An according conjecture has been recently formulated ($\LS_+$-Perfect Graph Conjecture); here we verify it for the well-studied class of claw-free graphs.

Double-critical graph conjecture for claw-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A connected graph $G$ with chromatic number $t$ is double-critical if $G \backslash \{x, y\}$ is $(t - 2)$-colorable for each edge $xy \in E(G)$. The complete graphs are the only known examples of double-critical graphs. A long-standing conjecture of Erd\H os and Lovász from 1966, which is referred to as the Double-Critical Graph Conjecture, states that there are no other double-critical graphs. That is, if a graph $G$ with chromatic number $t$ is double-critical, then $G$ is the complete graph on $t$ vertices. This has been verified for $t \le 5$, but remains open for $t \ge 6$. In this paper, we first prove that if $G$ is a non-complete, double-critical graph with chromatic number $t \ge 6$, then no vertex of degree $t + 1$ is adjacent to a vertex of degree $t+1$, $t + 2$, or $t + 3$ in $G$. We then use this result to show that the Double-Critical Graph Conjecture is true for double-critical graphs $G$ with chromatic number $t \le 8$ if $G$ is claw-free.

Thoroughly Distributed Colorings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider (not necessarily proper) colorings of the vertices of a graph where every color is thoroughly distributed, that is, appears in every open neighborhood. Equivalently, every color is a total dominating set. We define $\td(G)$ as the maximum number of colors in such a coloring and $\FTD(G)$ as the fractional version thereof. In particular, we show that every claw-free graph with minimum degree at least~$2$ has~$\FTD(G)\ge 3/2$ and this is best possible. For planar graphs, we show that every triangular disc has $\FTD(G) \ge 3/2$ and this is best possible, and that every planar graph has $\td(G) \le 4$ and this is best possible, while we conjecture that every planar triangulation has $\td(G)\ge 2$. Further, although there are arbitrarily large examples of connected, cubic graphs with $\td(G)=1$, we show that for a connected cubic graph $\FTD(G) \ge 2-o(1)$, and conjecture that it is always at least~$2$. We also consider the related concepts in hypergraphs.
Colouring squares of claw-free graphs

Is there some absolute $\varepsilon > 0$ such that for any claw-free graph $G$, the chromatic number of the square of $G$ satisfies $χ(G^2) \le (2-\varepsilon) ω(G)^2$, where $ω(G)$ is the clique number of $G$? Erdős and Nešetřil asked this question for the specific case of $G$ the line graph of a simple graph and this was answered in the affirmative by Molloy and Reed. We show that the answer to the more general question is also yes, and moreover that it essentially reduces to the original question of Erdős and Nešetřil.

Squared chromatic number without claws or large cliques
Published in Can. Math. Bull. 62 (2019) 23-35 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a claw-free graph on $n$ vertices with clique number $ω$, and consider the chromatic number $χ(G^2)$ of the square $G^2$ of $G$. Writing $χ'_s(d)$ for the supremum of $χ(L^2)$ over the line graphs $L$ of simple graphs of maximum degree at most $d$, we prove that $χ(G^2)\le χ'_s(ω)$ for $ω\in \{3,4\}$. For $ω=3$, this implies the sharp bound $χ(G^2) \leq 10$. For $ω=4$, this implies $χ(G^2)\leq 22$, which is within $2$ of the conjectured best bound. This work is motivated by a strengthened form of a conjecture of Erdős and Nešetřil.
Clique Coverings and Claw-free Graphs
Let $\cal C$ be a clique covering for $E(G)$ and let $v$ be a vertex of $G$. The valency of vertex $v$ (with respect to $\cal C$), denoted by $val_{\cal C}(v)$, is the number of cliques in $\cal C$ containing $v$. The local clique cover number of $G$, denoted by $lcc(G)$, is defined as the smallest integer $k$, for which there exists a clique covering for $E(G)$ such that $val_{\cal C}(v)$ is at most $k$, for every vertex $v\in V(G)$. In this paper, among other results, we prove that if $G$ is a claw-free graph, then $lcc(G)+χ(G)\leq n+1$.

Edge Clique Cover of Claw-free Graphs
Published in Journal of Graph Theory, Volume 90, 2018, 311 -- 405 • View PublicationBIB
The smallest number of cliques, covering all edges of a graph $ G $, is called the (edge) clique cover number of $ G $ and is denoted by $ cc(G) $. It is an easy observation that for every line graph $ G $ with $ n $ vertices, $cc(G)\leq n $. G. Chen et al. [Discrete Math. 219 (2000), no. 1--3, 17--26; MR1761707] extended this observation to all quasi-line graphs and questioned if the same assertion holds for all claw-free graphs. In this paper, using the celebrated structure theorem of claw-free graphs due to Chudnovsky and Seymour, we give an affirmative answer to this question for all claw-free graphs with independence number at least three. In particular, we prove that if $ G $ is a connected claw-free graph on $ n $ vertices with $ α(G)\geq 3 $, then $ cc(G)\leq n $ and equality holds if and only if $ G $ is either the graph of icosahedron, or the complement of a graph on $10$ vertices called twister or the $p^{th}$ power of the cycle $ C_n $, for $1\leq p \leq \lfloor (n-1)/3\rfloor $.
Graphs with Integer Matching Polynomial Roots

In this paper, we study graphs whose matching polynomial have only integer zeros. A graph is matching integral if the zeros of its matching polynomial are all integers. We characterize all matching integral traceable graphs.. We show that apart from K7 n (E(C3) [ E(C4)) there is no connected k-regular matching integral graph if k ? 2. It is also shown that if G is a graph with a perfect matching, then its matching polynomial has a zero in the interval (0, 1]. Finally, we describe all claw-free matching integral graphs.

Equimatchable Claw-Free Graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 341, Issue 10, October 2018, Pages 2859-2871 • View PublicationBIB
A graph is equimatchable if all of its maximal matchings have the same size. A graph is claw-free if it does not have a claw as an induced subgraph. In this paper, we provide, to the best of our knowledge, the first characterization of claw-free equimatchable graphs by identifying the equimatchable claw-free graph families. This characterization implies an efficient recognition algorithm.

A note on the double-critical graph conjecture
A connected $n$-chromatic graph $G$ is double-critical if for all the edges $xy$ of $G$, the graph $G-x-y$ is $(n-2)$-chromatic. In 1966, Erd\H os and Lovász conjectured that the only double-critical $n$-chromatic graph is $K_n$. This conjecture remains unresolved for $n \ge 6.$ In this short note, we verify this conjecture for claw-free graphs $G$ of chromatic number $6$.

Properties of minimally $t$-tough graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics Volume 341, Issue 1, January 2018, Pages 221-231 • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is minimally $t$-tough if the toughness of $G$ is $t$ and the deletion of any edge from $G$ decreases the toughness. Kriesell conjectured that for every minimally $1$-tough graph the minimum degree $δ(G)=2$. We show that in every minimally $1$-tough graph $δ(G)\le\frac{n+2}{3}$. We also prove that every minimally $1$-tough claw-free graph is a cycle. On the other hand, we show that for every $t \in \mathbb{Q}$ any graph can be embedded as an induced subgraph into a minimally $t$-tough graph.

Mock Threshold Graphs
Published in Discrete Math., 341 (2018), no. 8, 2159-2178 • View PublicationBIB
Mock threshold graphs are a simple generalization of threshold graphs that, like threshold graphs, are perfect graphs. Our main theorem is a characterization of mock threshold graphs by forbidden induced subgraphs. Other theorems characterize mock threshold graphs that are claw-free and that are line graphs. We also discuss relations with chordality and well-quasi-ordering as well as algorithmic aspects.

Graphs, Disjoint Matchings and Some Inequalities

For $k \geq 1$ and a graph $G$ let $ν_k(G)$ denote the size of a maximum $k$-edge-colorable subgraph of $G$. Mkrtchyan, Petrosyan and Vardanyan proved that $ν_2(G)\geq \frac45\cdot |V(G)|$, $ν_3(G)\geq \frac76\cdot |V(G)|$ for any cubic graph $G$ ~\cite{samvel:2010}. They were also able to show that if $G$ is a cubic graph, then $ν_2(G)+ν_3(G)\geq 2\cdot |V(G)|$ ~\cite{samvel:2014} and $ν_2(G) \leq \frac{|V(G)| + 2\cdot ν_3(G)}{4}$ ~\cite{samvel:2010}. In the first part of the present work, we show that the last two inequalities imply the first two of them. Moreover, we show that $ν_2(G) \geq α\cdot \frac{|V(G)| + 2\cdot ν_3(G)}{4} $, where $α=\frac{16}{17}$, if $G$ is a cubic graph, $α=\frac{20}{21}$, if $G$ is a cubic graph containing a perfect matching, $α=\frac{44}{45}$, if $G$ is a bridgeless cubic graph. We also investigate the parameters $ν_2(G)$ and $ν_3(G)$ in the class of claw-free cubic graphs. We improve the lower bounds for $ν_2(G)$ and $ν_3(G)$ for claw-free bridgeless cubic graphs to $ν_2(G)\geq \frac{35}{36}\cdot |V(G)|$ ($n \geq 48$), $ν_3(G)\geq \frac{43}{45}\cdot |E(G)|$. On the basis of these inequalities we are able to improve the coefficient $α$ for bridgeless claw-free cubic graphs. In the second part of the work, we prove lower bounds for $ν_k(G)$ in terms of $\frac{ν_{k-1}(G)+ν_{k+1}(G)}{2}$ for $k\geq 2$ and graphs $G$ containing at most $1$ cycle. We also present the corresponding conjectures for bipartite and nearly bipartite graphs.
