On Sylvester Colorings of Cubic Graphs
If $G$ and $H$ are two cubic graphs, then an $H$-coloring of $G$ is a proper edge-coloring $f$ with edges of $H$, such that for each vertex $x$ of $G$, there is a vertex $y$ of $H$ with $f(\partial_G(x))=\partial_H(y)$. If $G$ admits an $H$-coloring, then we will write $H\prec G$. The Petersen coloring conjecture of Jaeger states that for any bridgeless cubic graph $G$, one has: $P\prec G$. The second author has recently introduced the Sylvester coloring conjecture, which states that for any cubic graph $G$ one has: $S\prec G$. Here $S$ is the Sylvester graph on $10$ vertices. In this paper, we prove the analogue of Sylvester coloring conjecture for cubic pseudo-graphs. Moreover, we show that if $G$ is any connected simple cubic graph $G$ with $G\prec P$, then $G = P$. This implies that the Petersen graph does not admit an $S_{16}$-coloring, where $S_{16}$ is the smallest connected simple cubic graph without a perfect matching. $S_{16}$ has $16$ vertices. %We conjecture that there are infinitely many connected cubic simple graphs which do not admit an %$S_{16}$-coloring. Finally, we obtain $2$ results towards the Sylvester coloring conjecture. The first result states that any cubic graph $G$ has a coloring with edges of Sylvester graph $S$ such that at least $\frac45$ of vertices of $G$ meet the conditions of Sylvester coloring conjecture. The second result states that any claw-free cubic graph graph admits an $S$-coloring. This results is an application of our result on cubic pseudo-graphs.

We prove that if $G$ is a quasi-line graph with $Δ(G)>ω(G)$ and $Δ(G)\ge 69$, then $χ_{OL}(G)\le Δ(G)-1$. Together with our previous work, this implies that if $G$ is a claw-free graph with $Δ(G)>ω(G)$ and $Δ(G)\ge 69$, then $χ_{\ell}(G)\le Δ(G)-1$.

Degree conditions restricted to induced paths for hamiltonicity of claw-heavy graphs
Published in Acta Math. Sin. (Engl. Ser.) 33(2017), no. 2, 301--310 • View PublicationBIB
Broersma and Veldman proved that every 2-connected claw-free and $P_6$-free graph is hamiltonian. Chen et al. extended this result by proving every 2-connected claw-heavy and $P_6$-free graph is hamiltonian. On the other hand, Li et al. constructed a class of 2-connected graphs which are claw-heavy and $P_6$-\emph{o}-heavy but not hamiltonian. In this paper we further give some Ore-type degree conditions restricting to induced $P_6$'s of a 2-connected claw-heavy graph that can guarantee the graph to be hamiltonian. This improves some previous related results.

On the choosability of claw-free perfect graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
It has been conjectured that for every claw-free graph $G$ the choice number of $G$ is equal to its chromatic number. We focus on the special case of this conjecture where $G$ is perfect. Claw-free perfect graphs can be decomposed via clique-cutset into two special classes called elementary graphs and peculiar graphs. Based on this decomposition we prove that the conjecture holds true for every claw-free perfect graph with maximum clique size at most $4$.
Dominating induced matchings in graphs containing no long claw
Published • View PublicationBIB
An induced matching $M$ in a graph $G$ is dominating if every edge not in $M$ shares exactly one vertex with an edge in $M$. The dominating induced matching problem (also known as efficient edge domination) asks whether a graph $G$ contains a dominating induced matching. This problem is generally NP-complete, but polynomial-time solvable for graphs with some special properties. In particular, it is solvable in polynomial time for claw-free graphs. In the present paper, we study this problem for graphs containing no long claw, i.e. no induced subgraph obtained from the claw by subdividing each of its edges exactly once. To solve the problem in this class, we reduce it to the following question: given a graph $G$ and a subset of its vertices, does $G$ contain a matching saturating all vertices of the subset? We show that this question can be answered in polynomial time, thus providing a polynomial-time algorithm to solve the dominating induced matching problem for graphs containing no long claw.

Extremal problems on the Hamiltonicity of claw-free graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics 341(2018) 2774--2788 • View PublicationBIB
In 1962, Erdős proved that if a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices satisfies $$ e(G)>\max\left\{\binom{n-k}{2}+k^2,\binom{\lceil(n+1)/2\rceil}{2}+\left\lfloor \frac{n-1}{2}\right\rfloor^2\right\}, $$ where the minimum degree $δ(G)\geq k$ and $1\leq k\leq(n-1)/2$, then it is Hamiltonian. For $n \geq 2k+1$, let $E^k_n=K_{k}\vee (kK_1+K_{n-2k})$, where "$\vee$" is the "join" operation. One can observe $e(E^k_n)=\binom{n-k}{2}+k^2$ and $E^k_n$ is not Hamiltonian. As $E^k_n$ contains induced claws for $k\geq 2$, a natural question is to characterize all 2-connected claw-free non-Hamiltonian graphs with the largest possible number of edges. We answer this question completely by proving a claw-free analog of Erdős' theorem. Moreover, as byproducts, we establish several tight spectral conditions for a 2-connected claw-free graph to be Hamiltonian. Similar results for the traceability of connected claw-free graphs are also obtained. Our tools include Ryjáček's claw-free closure theory and Brousek's characterization of minimal 2-connected claw-free non-Hamiltonian graphs.

A note on the shameful conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $P_G(q)$ denote the chromatic polynomial of a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices. The `shameful conjecture' due to Bartels and Welsh states that, $$\frac{P_G(n)}{P_G(n-1)} \geq \frac{n^n}{(n-1)^n}.$$ Let $μ(G)$ denote the expected number of colors used in a uniformly random proper $n$-coloring of $G$. The above inequality can be interpreted as saying that $μ(G) \geq μ(O_n)$, where $O_n$ is the empty graph on $n$ nodes. This conjecture was proved by F. M. Dong, who in fact showed that, $$\frac{P_G(q)}{P_G(q-1)} \geq \frac{q^n}{(q-1)^n}$$ for all $q \geq n$. There are examples showing that this inequality is not true for all $q \geq 2$. In this paper, we show that the above inequality holds for all $q \geq 36D^{3/2}$, where $D$ is the largest degree of $G$. It is also shown that the above inequality holds true for all $q \geq 2$ when $G$ is a claw-free graph.

The f-Chromatic Index of Claw-free Graphs Whose f-Core is 2-regular
Let $G$ be a graph and $f:V(G)\rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ be a function. An $f$-coloring of a graph $G$ is an edge coloring such that each color appears at each vertex $v\in V(G)$ at most $f (v)$ times. The minimum number of colors needed to $f$-color $G$ is called the $f$-chromatic index of $G$ and is denoted by $χ'_{f}(G)$. It was shown that for every graph $G$, $Δ_{f}(G)\le χ'_{f}(G)\le Δ_{f}(G)+1$, where $Δ_{f}(G)=\max_{v\in V(G)} \lceil \frac{d_G(v)}{f(v)} \rceil$. A graph $G$ is said to be $f$-Class $1$ if $χ'_{f}(G)=Δ_{f}(G)$, and $f$-Class $2$, otherwise. Also, $G_{Δ_f}$ is the induced subgraph of $G$ on $\{v\in V(G):\,\frac{d_G(v)}{f(v)}=Δ_{f}(G)\}$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is a connected graph with $Δ(G_{Δ_f})\leq 2$ and $G$ has an edge cut of size at most $Δ_f(G) -2$ which is a matching or a star, then $G$ is $f$-Class $1$. Also, we prove that if $G$ is a connected graph and every connected component of $G_{Δ_f}$ is a unicyclic graph or a tree and $G_{Δ_f}$ is not $2$-regular, then $G$ is $f$-Class $1$. Moreover, we show that except one graph, every connected claw-free graph $G$ whose $f$-core is $2$-regular with a vertex $v$ such that $f(v)\neq 1$ is $f$-Class $1$.
On Perfect and Quasiperfect Domination in Graphs
A subset $S\subseteq V$ in a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a $k$-quasiperfect dominating set (for $k\geq 1$) if every vertex not in $S$ is adjacent to at least one and at most $k$ vertices in $S$. The cardinality of a minimum $k$-quasiperfect dominating set in $G$ is denoted by $γ_ {\stackrel{}{1k}}(G)$. Those sets were first introduced by Chellali et al. (2013) as a generalization of the perfect domination concept and allow us to construct a decreasing chain of quasiperfect dominating numbers $ n \ge γ_ {\stackrel{}{11}}(G) \ge γ_ {\stackrel{}{12}}(G)\ge \ldots \ge γ_ {\stackrel{}{1Δ}}(G)=γ(G)$ in order to indicate how far is $G$ from being perfectly dominated. In this paper we study properties, existence and realization of graphs for which the chain is short, that is, $γ_ {\stackrel{}{12}}(G)=γ(G)$. Among them, one can find cographs, claw-free graphs and graphs with extremal values of $Δ(G)$.

Disjunctive Total Domination in Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph with no isolated vertex. In this paper, we study a parameter that is a relaxation of arguably the most important domination parameter, namely the total domination number, $γ_t(G)$. A set $S$ of vertices in $G$ is a disjunctive total dominating set of $G$ if every vertex is adjacent to a vertex of $S$ or has at least two vertices in $S$ at distance2 from it. The disjunctive total domination number, $γ^d_t(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of such a set. We observe that $γ^d_t(G) \le γ_t(G)$. We prove that if $G$ is a connected graph of order$n \ge 8$, then $γ^d_t(G) \le 2(n-1)/3$ and we characterize the extremal graphs. It is known that if $G$ is a connected claw-free graph of order$n$, then $γ_t(G) \le 2n/3$ and this upper bound is tight for arbitrarily large$n$. We show this upper bound can be improved significantly for the disjunctive total domination number. We show that if $G$ is a connected claw-free graph of order$n > 10$, then $γ^d_t(G) \le 4n/7$ and we characterize the graphs achieving equality in this bound.

Induced subgraphs with large degrees at end-vertices for hamiltonicity of claw-free graphs
Published in Acta Math. Sin. (Engl. Ser.) 32 (2016), no. 7, 845--855 • View PublicationBIB
A graph is called \emph{claw-free} if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $K_{1,3}$. Matthews and Sumner proved that a 2-connected claw-free graph $G$ is hamiltonian if every vertex of it has degree at least $(|V(G)|-2)/3$. At the workshop C\&C (Novy Smokovec, 1993), Broersma conjectured the degree condition of this result can be restricted only to end-vertices of induced copies of $N$ (the graph obtained from a triangle by adding three disjoint pendant edges). Fujisawa and Yamashita showed that the degree condition of Matthews and Sumner can be restricted only to end-vertices of induced copies of $Z_1$ (the graph obtained from a triangle by adding one pendant edge). Our main result in this paper is a characterization of all graphs $H$ such that a 2-connected claw-free graph $G$ is hamiltonian if each end-vertex of every induced copy of $H$ in $G$ has degree at least $|V(G)|/3+1$. This gives an affirmative solution of the conjecture of Broersma up to an additive constant.

Christoffel-Darboux type identities for independence polynomial

In this paper we introduce some Christoffel-Darboux type identities for independence polynomials. As an application, we give a new proof of a theorem of M. Chudnovsky and P. Seymour, claiming that the independence polynomial of a claw-free graph has only real roots. Another application is related to a conjecture of Merrifield and Simmons.

3-Factor-criticality in double domination edge critical graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A vertex subset $S$ of a graph $G$ is a double dominating set of $G$ if $|N[v]\cap S|\geq 2$ for each vertex $v$ of $G$, where $N[v]$ is the set of the vertex $v$ and vertices adjacent to $v$. The double domination number of $G$, denoted by $γ_{\times 2}(G)$, is the cardinality of a smallest double dominating set of $G$. A graph $G$ is said to be double domination edge critical if $γ_{\times 2}(G+e)<γ_{\times 2}(G)$ for any edge $e \notin E$. A double domination edge critical graph $G$ with $γ_{\times 2}(G)=k$ is called $k$-$γ_{\times 2}(G)$-critical. A graph $G$ is $r$-factor-critical if $G-S$ has a perfect matching for each set $S$ of $r$ vertices in $G$. In this paper we show that $G$ is 3-factor-critical if $G$ is a 3-connected claw-free $4$-$γ_{\times 2}(G)$-critical graph of odd order with minimum degree at least 4 except a family of graphs.

Coloring clique-hypergraph of $K_5$-minor-free graphs
A clique-coloring of a graph $G$ is a coloring of the vertices of $G$ so that no maximal clique of size at least two is monochromatic. The clique-hypergraph, $\mathcal{H}(G)$, of a graph $G$ has $V(G)$ as its set of vertices and the maximal cliques of $G$ as its hyperedges. A (vertex) coloring of $\mathcal{H}(G)$ is a clique-coloring of $G$. The clique-chromatic number of $G$ is the least number of colors for which $G$ admits a clique-coloring. Every planar graph has been proved to be 3-clique-colorable (Electr. J. Combin. 6 (1999), \#R26). Recently, we showed that every claw-free planar graph, different from an odd cycle, is $2$-clique-colorable (European J. Combin. 36 (2014) 367-376). In this paper we generalize these results to \{claw, $K_5$-minor\}-free graphs.
Complexity of Grundy coloring and its variants

The Grundy number of a graph is the maximum number of colors used by the greedy coloring algorithm over all vertex orderings. In this paper, we study the computational complexity of GRUNDY COLORING, the problem of determining whether a given graph has Grundy number at least $k$. We also study the variants WEAK GRUNDY COLORING (where the coloring is not necessarily proper) and CONNECTED GRUNDY COLORING (where at each step of the greedy coloring algorithm, the subgraph induced by the colored vertices must be connected). We show that GRUNDY COLORING can be solved in time $O^*(2.443^n)$ and WEAK GRUNDY COLORING in time $O^*(2.716^n)$ on graphs of order $n$. While GRUNDY COLORING and WEAK GRUNDY COLORING are known to be solvable in time $O^*(2^{O(wk)})$ for graphs of treewidth $w$ (where $k$ is the number of colors), we prove that under the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH), they cannot be solved in time $O^*(2^{o(w\log w)})$. We also describe an $O^*(2^{2^{O(k)}})$ algorithm for WEAK GRUNDY COLORING, which is therefore $\fpt$ for the parameter $k$. Moreover, under the ETH, we prove that such a running time is essentially optimal (this lower bound also holds for GRUNDY COLORING). Although we do not know whether GRUNDY COLORING is in $\fpt$, we show that this is the case for graphs belonging to a number of standard graph classes including chordal graphs, claw-free graphs, and graphs excluding a fixed minor. We also describe a quasi-polynomial time algorithm for GRUNDY COLORING and WEAK GRUNDY COLORING on apex-minor graphs. In stark contrast with the two other problems, we show that CONNECTED GRUNDY COLORING is $\np$-complete already for $k=7$ colors.

Spectral radius and traceability of connected claw-free graphs

Let $G$ be a connected claw-free graph on $n$ vertices and $\overline{G}$ be its complement graph. Let $μ(G)$ be the spectral radius of $G$. Denote by $N_{n-3,3}$ the graph consisting of $K_{n-3}$ and three disjoint pendent edges. In this note we prove that: (1) If $μ(G)\geq n-4$, then $G$ is traceable unless $G=N_{n-3,3}$. (2) If $μ(\overline{G})\leq μ(\overline{N_{n-3,3}})$ and $n\geq 24$, then $G$ is traceable unless $G=N_{n-3,3}$. Our works are counterparts on claw-free graphs of previous theorems due to Lu et al., and Fiedler and Nikiforov, respectively.
Induced Cycles in Graphs

The maximum cardinality of an induced $2$-regular subgraph of a graph $G$ is denoted by $c_{\rm ind}(G)$. We prove that if $G$ is an $r$-regular graph of order $n$, then $c_{\rm ind}(G) \geq \frac{n}{2(r-1)} + \frac{1}{(r-1)(r-2)}$ and we prove that if $G$ is a cubic claw-free graph on order $n$, then $c_{\rm ind}(G) > 13n/20$ and this bound is asymptotically best possible.

Integer round-up property for the chromatic number of some h-perfect graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is h-perfect if its stable set polytope can be completely described by non-negativity, clique and odd-hole constraints. It is t-perfect if it furthermore has no clique of size 4. For every graph $G$ and every $c\in\mathbb{Z}_{+}^{V(G)}$, the weighted chromatic number of $(G,c)$ is the minimum cardinality of a multi-set $\mathcal{F}$ of stable sets of $G$ such that every $v\in V(G)$ belongs to at least $c_v$ members of $\mathcal{F}$. We prove that every h-perfect line-graph and every t-perfect claw-free graph $G$ has the integer round-up property for the chromatic number: for every non-negative integer weight $c$ on the vertices of $G$, the weighted chromatic number of $(G,c)$ can be obtained by rounding up its fractional relaxation. In other words, the stable set polytope of $G$ has the integer decomposition property. Our results imply the existence of a polynomial-time algorithm which computes the weighted chromatic number of t-perfect claw-free graphs and h-perfect line-graphs. Finally, they yield a new case of a conjecture of Goldberg and Seymour on edge-colorings.
Matchings in Benjamini-Schramm convergent graph sequences
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 368 (2016), no. 6, 4197--4218 • Search Publication
We introduce the matching measure of a finite graph as the uniform distribution on the roots of the matching polynomial of the graph. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of the matching measure for graph sequences with bounded degree. A graph parameter is said to be estimable if it converges along every Benjamini-Schramm convergent sparse graph sequence. We prove that the normalized logarithm of the number of matchings is estimable. We also show that the analogous statement for perfect matchings already fails for d-regular bipartite graphs for any fixed d at least 3. The latter result relies on analyzing the probability that a randomly chosen perfect matching contains a particular edge. However, for any sequence of d-regular bipartite graphs converging to the d-regular tree, we prove that the normalized logarithm of the number of perfect matchings converges. This applies to random d-regular bipartite graphs. We show that the limit equals to the exponent in Schrijver's lower bound on the number of perfect matchings. Our analytic approach also yields a short proof for the Nguyen-Onak (also Elek--Lippner) theorem saying that the matching ratio is estimable. In fact, we prove the slightly stronger result that the independence ratio is estimable for claw-free graphs.

Equitable list point arboricity of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is list point $k$-arborable if, whenever we are given a $k$-list assignment $L(v)$ of colors for each vertex $v\in V(G)$, we can choose a color $c(v)\in L(v)$ for each vertex $v$ so that each color class induces an acyclic subgraph of $G$, and is equitable list point $k$-arborable if $G$ is list point $k$-arborable and each color appears on at most $\lceil |V(G)|/k\rceil$ vertices of $G$. In this paper, we conjecture that every graph $G$ is equitable list point $k$-arborable for every $k\geq \lceil(Δ(G)+1)/2\rceil$ and settle this for complete graphs, 2-degenerate graphs, 3-degenerate claw-free graphs with maximum degree at least 4, and planar graphs with maximum degree at least 8.
