Generalized bilinear forms graphs and MDR codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the generalized bilinear forms graph $Γ_d$ over a residue class ring $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$. We show that $Γ_d$ is a connected vertex transitive graph, and completely determine its independence number, clique number, chromatic number and maximum cliques. We also prove that cores of both $Γ_d$ and its complement are maximum cliques. The graph $Γ_d$ is useful for error-correcting codes. We show that every largest independent set of $Γ_d$ is both an MRD code over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$ and a usual MDS code. Moreover, there is a largest independent set of $Γ_d$ to be a linear code over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$.

Four NP-complete problems about generalizations of perfect graphs
We show that the following problems are NP-complete. 1. Can the vertex set of a graph be partitioned into two sets such that each set induces a perfect graph? 2. Is the difference between the chromatic number and clique number at most $1$ for every induced subgraph of a graph? 3. Can the vertex set of every induced subgraph of a graph be partitioned into two sets such that the first set induces a perfect graph, and the clique number of the graph induced by the second set is smaller than that of the original induced subgraph? 4. Does a graph contain a stable set whose deletion results in a perfect graph? The proofs of the NP-completeness of the four problems follow the same pattern: Showing that all the four problems are NP-complete when restricted to triangle-free graphs by using results of Maffray and Preissmann on $3$-colorability and $4$-colorability of triangle-free graphs

Vector spaces and Grassmann graphs over residue class rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$ be the residue class ring of integers modulo $p^s$, where $p$ is a prime number and $s$ is a positive integer. Using matrix representation and the inner rank of a matrix, we study the intersection, join, dimension formula and dual subspaces on vector subspaces of $\mathbb{Z}^n_{p^s}$. Based on these results, we investigate the Grassmann graph $G_{p^s}(n,m)$ over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$. $G_{p^s}(n,m)$ is a connected vertex-transitive graph, and we determine its valency, clique number and maximum cliques. Finally, we characterize the automorphisms of $G_{p^s}(n,m)$.

Automorphism group of the subspace inclusion graph of a vector space
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper [Comm. Algebra, 44(2016) 4724-4731], Das introduced the graph $\mathcal{I}n(\mathbb{V})$, called subspace inclusion graph on a finite dimensional vector space $\mathbb{V}$, where the vertex set is the collection of nontrivial proper subspaces of $\mathbb{V}$ and two vertices are adjacent if one is properly contained in another. Das studied the diameter, girth, clique number, and chromatic number of $\mathcal{I}n(\mathbb{V})$ when the base field is arbitrary, and he also studied some other properties of $\mathcal{I}n(\mathbb{V})$ when the base field is finite. In this paper, the automorphisms of $\mathcal{I}n(\mathbb{V})$ are determined when the base field is finite.

Automorphisms of the subspace sum graphs on a vector space
The subspace sum graph $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{V})$ on a finite dimensional vector space $\mathbb{V}$ was introduced by Das [Subspace Sum Graph of a Vector Space, arXiv:1702.08245], recently. The vertex set of $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{V})$ consists of all the nontrivial proper subspaces of $\mathbb{V}$ and two distinct vertices $W_1$ and $W_2$ are adjacent if and only if $W_1+W_2=\mathbb{V}$. In that paper, some structural indices (e.g., diameter, girth, connectivity, domination number, clique number and chromatic number) were studied, but the characterization of automorphisms of $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{V})$ was left as one of further research topics. Motivated by this, we in this paper characterize the automorphisms of $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{V})$ completely.

Disjointness graphs of segments
Published • View PublicationBIB
The {\em disjointness graph} $G=G({\cal S})$ of a set of segments ${\cal S}$ in $R^d$, $d\ge 2,$ is a graph whose vertex set is ${\cal S}$ and two vertices are connected by an edge if and only if the corresponding segments are disjoint. We prove that the chromatic number of $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\le(ω(G))^4+(ω(G))^3$, where $ω(G)$ denotes the clique number of $G$. It follows, that $\cal S$ has $Ω(n^{1/5})$ pairwise intersecting or pairwise disjoint elements. Stronger bounds are established for lines in space, instead of segments. We show that computing $ω(G)$ and $χ(G)$ for disjointness graphs of lines in space are NP-hard tasks. However, we can design efficient algorithms to compute proper colorings of $G$ in which the number of colors satisfies the above upper bounds. One cannot expect similar results for sets of continuous arcs, instead of segments, even in the plane. We construct families of arcs whose disjointness graphs are triangle-free ($ω(G)=2$), but whose chromatic numbers are arbitrarily large.

On the spectrum of linear dependence graph of finite dimensional vector spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce a graph structure called linear dependence graph of a finite dimensional vector space over a finite field. Some basic properties of the graph like connectedness, completeness, planarity, clique number, chromatic number etc. have been studied. It is shown that two vector spaces are isomorphic if and only if their corresponding linear dependence graphs are isomorphic. Also adjacency spectrum, Laplacian spectrum and distance spectrum of the linear dependence graph have been studied.
Exact distance coloring in trees
Published in Combinatorics, Probability and Computing 28(2) (2019), 177-186 • View PublicationBIB
For an integer $q\ge 2$ and an even integer $d$, consider the graph obtained from a large complete $q$-ary tree by connecting with an edge any two vertices at distance exactly $d$ in the tree. This graph has clique number $q+1$, and the purpose of this short note is to prove that its chromatic number is $Θ\big(\tfrac{d \log q}{\log d}\big)$. It was not known that the chromatic number of this graph grows with $d$. As a simple corollary of our result, we give a negative answer to a problem of van den Heuvel and Naserasr, asking whether there is a constant $C$ such that for any odd integer $d$, any planar graph can be colored with at most $C$ colors such that any pair of vertices at distance exactly $d$ have distinct colors. Finally, we study interval coloring of trees (where vertices at distance at least $d$ and at most $cd$, for some real $c>1$, must be assigned distinct colors), giving a sharp upper bound in the case of bounded degree trees.

Subspace Sum Graph of a Vector Space
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we introduce a graph structure, called subspace sum graph $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{V})$ on a finite dimensional vector space $\mathbb{V}$ where the vertex set is the collection of non-trivial proper subspaces of a vector space and two vertices $W_1,W_2$ are adjacent if $W_1 + W_2=\mathbb{V}$. The diameter, girth, connectivity, maximal independent sets, different variants of domination number, clique number and chromatic number of $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{V})$ are studied. It is shown that two subspace sum graphs are isomorphic if and only if the base vector spaces are isomorphic. Finally some properties of subspace sum graph are studied when the base field is finite.

Induced subgraphs of graphs with large chromatic number. IX. Rainbow paths

We prove that for all nonnegative integers k,s there exists c with the following property. Let G be a graph with clique number at most k and chromatic number more than c. Then for every vertex-colouring (not necessarily optimal) of G, some induced subgraph of G is an s-vertex path, and all its vertices have different colours. This extends a recent result of Gyarfas and Sarkozy, who proved the same (when k=2) for graphs G with girth at least five.

Chromatic bounds for some classes of $2K_2$-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A hereditary class $\mathcal{G}$ of graphs is $χ$-bounded if there is a $χ$-binding function, say $f$ such that $χ(G) \leq f(ω(G))$, for every $G \in \cal{G}$, where $χ(G)$ ($ω(G)$) denote the chromatic (clique) number of $G$. It is known that for every $2K_2$-free graph $G$, $χ(G) \leq \binom{ω(G)+1}{2}$, and the class of ($2K_2, 3K_1$)-free graphs does not admit a linear $χ$-binding function. In this paper, we are interested in classes of $2K_2$-free graphs that admit a linear $χ$-binding function. We show that the class of ($2K_2, H$)-free graphs, where $H\in \{K_1+P_4, K_1+C_4, \overline{P_2\cup P_3}, HVN, K_5-e, K_5\}$ admits a linear $χ$-binding function. Also, we show that some superclasses of $2K_2$-free graphs are $χ$-bounded.

The list chromatic number of graphs with small clique number
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that every triangle-free graph with maximum degree $Δ$ has list chromatic number at most $(1+o(1))\fracΔ{\ln Δ}$. This matches the best-known bound for graphs of girth at least 5. We also provide a new proof that for any $r\geq 4$ every $K_r$-free graph has list-chromatic number at most $200r\frac{Δ\ln\lnΔ}{\lnΔ}$.

Induced subgraphs of graphs with large chromatic number. VII. Gyárfás' complementation conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
A class of graphs is $χ$-bounded if there is a function $f$ such that $χ(G)\le f(ω(G))$ for every induced subgraph $G$ of every graph in the class, where $χ,ω$ denote the chromatic number and clique number of $G$ respectively. In 1987, Gyárfás conjectured that for every $c$, if $\mathcal{C}$ is a class of graphs such that $χ(G)\le ω(G)+c$ for every induced subgraph $G$ of every graph in the class, then the class of complements of members of $\mathcal{C}$ is $χ$-bounded. We prove this conjecture. Indeed, more generally, a class of graphs is $χ$-bounded if it has the property that no graph in the class has $c+1$ odd holes, pairwise disjoint and with no edges between them. The main tool is a lemma that if $C$ is a shortest odd hole in a graph, and $X$ is the set of vertices with at least five neighbours in $V(C)$, then there is a three-vertex set that dominates $X$.

Induced subgraphs of graphs with large chromatic number. VI. Banana trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate which graphs H have the property that in every graph with bounded clique number and sufficiently large chromatic number, some induced subgraph is isomorphic to a subdivision of H. In an earlier paper, one of us proved that every tree has this property; and in another earlier paper with M. Chudnovsky, we proved that every cycle has this property. Here we give a common generalization. Say a banana is the union of a set of paths all with the same ends but otherwise disjoint. We prove that if H is obtained from a tree by replacing each edge by a banana then H has the property mentioned. We also find some other multigraphs with the same property.

Some problems on induced subgraphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 236 (2018) 422-427 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss some problems related to induced subgraphs. The first problem is about getting a good upper bound for the chromatic number in terms of the clique number for graphs in which every induced cycle has length $3$ or $4$. The second problem is about the perfect chromatic number of a graph, which is the smallest number of perfect sets into which the vertex set of a graph can be partitioned. (A set of vertices is said to be perfect it it induces a perfect graph.) The third problem is on antichains in the induced subgraph ordering. The fourth problem is on graphs in which the difference between the chromatic number and the clique number is at most one for every induced subgraph of the graph. The fifth problem is on a weakening of the notorious Erdős-Hajnal conjecture. The last problem is on a conjecture of Gyárfás about $χ$-boundedness of a particular class of graphs.

A note on Reed's Conjecture about $ω$, $Δ$ and $χ$ with respect to vertices of high degree
Reed conjectured that for every graph, $χ\leq \left \lceil \frac{Δ+ ω+ 1}{2} \right \rceil$ holds, where $χ$, $ω$ and $Δ$ denote the chromatic number, clique number and maximum degree of the graph, respectively. We develop an algorithm which takes a hypothetical counterexample as input. The output discloses some hidden structures closely related to high vertex degrees. Consequently, we deduce two graph classes where Reed's Conjecture holds: One contains all graphs in which the vertices of degree at least $5$ form a stable set. The other contains all graphs in which every induced cycle of odd length contains a vertex of at most degree 3.

Some characteristics of the simple Boolean quadric polytope extension
Published • View PublicationBIB
Following the seminal work of Padberg on the Boolean quadric polytope $BQP$ and its LP relaxation $BQP_{LP}$, we consider a natural extension: $SATP$ and $SATP_{LP}$ polytopes, with $BQP_{LP}$ being projection of the $SATP_{LP}$ face (and $BQP$ -- projection of the $SATP$ face). We consider a problem of integer recognition: determine whether a maximum of a linear objective function is achieved at an integral vertex of a polytope. Various special instances of 3-SAT problem like NAE-3-SAT, 1-in-3-SAT, weighted MAX-3-SAT, and others can be solved by integer recognition over $SATP_{LP}$. We describe all integral vertices of $SATP_{LP}$. Like $BQP_{LP}$, polytope $SATP_{LP}$ has the Trubin-property being quasi-integral (1-skeleton of $SATP$ is a subset of 1-skeleton of $SATP_{LP}$). However, unlike $BQP$, not all vertices of $SATP$ are pairwise adjacent, the diameter of $SATP$ equals 2, and the clique number of 1-skeleton is superpolynomial in dimension. It is known that the fractional vertices of $BQP_{LP}$ are half-integer (0, 1 or 1/2 valued). We show that the denominators of $SATP_{LP}$ fractional vertices can take any integral value. Finally, we describe polynomially solvable subproblems of integer recognition over $SATP_{LP}$ with constrained objective functions. Based on that, we solve some cases of edge constrained bipartite graph coloring.

Colouring of (P3UP2)-free graphs
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics, Vol. 34, No. 1 (2018) 97-107 • View PublicationBIB
The class of 2K2-free graphs and its various subclasses have been studied in a variety of contexts. In this paper, we are concerned with the colouring of (P3UP2)-free graphs, a super class of 2K2-free graphs. We derive a O(w^3) upper bound for the chromatic number of (P3UP2)-free graphs, and sharper bounds for (P3UP2), diamond)-free graphs, where w denotes the clique number. By applying similar proof techniques we obtain chromatic bounds for (2K2, diamond)-free graphs. The last two classes are perfect if w >=5 and >= 4 respectively.

Maximizing the number of $x$-colorings of $4$-chromatic graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 341(5) (2018), 1419-1431 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{C}_4(n)$ be the family of all connected $4$-chromatic graphs of order $n$. Given an integer $x\geq 4$, we consider the problem of finding the maximum number of $x$-colorings of a graph in $\mathcal{C}_4(n)$. It was conjectured that the maximum number of $x$-colorings is equal to $(x)_{\downarrow 4}(x-1)^{n-4}$ and the extremal graphs are those which have clique number $4$ and size $n+2$. In this article, we reduce this problem to a \textit{finite} family of graphs. We show that there exist a finite family $\mathcal{F}$ of connected $4$-chromatic graphs such that if the number of $x$-colorings of every graph $G$ in $\mathcal{F}$ is less than $(x)_{\downarrow 4}(x-1)^{|V(G)|-4}$ then the conjecture holds to be true.
