Bounds on the Higher Degree Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Constants over $\mathbb{F}_q^n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The classical Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constant of a group $G$ denotes the smallest positive integer $\ell$ such that any sequence $S$ of length at least $\ell$ contains a zero-sum subsequence of length $\exp(G)$. In a recent paper, Caro and Schmitt generalized this concept, using the $m$-th degree symmetric polynomial $e_m(S)$ instead of the sum of the elements of $S$ and considering subsequences of a given length $t$. In particular, they defined the higher degree Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constants $EGZ(t,R,m)$ of a finite commutative ring $R$ and presented several lower and upper bounds to these constants. This paper aims to provide lower and upper bounds for $EGZ(t,R,m)$ in case $R=\mathbb{F}_q^{n}$. The lower bounds here presented have been obtained, respectively, using Lovász Local Lemma and the Expurgation method and, for sufficiently large $n$, they beat the lower bound provided by Caro and Schmitt for the same kind of rings. Finally, we prove closed form upper bounds derived from the Ellenberg-Gijswijt and Sauermann results for the cap-set problem assuming that $q = p^k$, $t = p$, and $m=p-1$. Moreover, using the Slice Rank method we derive a convex optimization problem that provides the best bounds for $q = 3^k$, $t = 3$, $m=2$ and $k=2,3,4,5$.

Hypergeometric functions for Dirichlet characters and Peisert-like graphs on $\mathbb{Z}_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a prime $p\equiv 3\pmod 4$ and a positive integer $t$, let $q=p^{2t}$. The Peisert graph of order $q$ is the graph with vertex set $\mathbb{F}_q$ such that $ab$ is an edge if $a-b\in\langle g^4\rangle\cup g\langle g^4\rangle$, where $g$ is a primitive element of $\mathbb{F}_q$. In this paper, we construct a similar graph with vertex set as the commutative ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$ for suitable $n$, which we call \textit{Peisert-like} graph and denote by $G^\ast(n)$. Owing to the need for cyclicity of the group of units of $\mathbb{Z}_n$, we consider $n=p^α$ or $2p^α$, where $p\equiv 1\pmod 4$ is a prime and $α$ is a positive integer. For primes $p\equiv 1\pmod 8$, we compute the number of triangles in the graph $G^\ast(p^α)$ by evaluating certain character sums. Next, we study cliques of order 4 in $G^\ast(p^α)$. To find the number of cliques of order $4$ in $G^\ast(p^α)$, we first introduce hypergeometric functions containing Dirichlet characters as arguments, and then express the number of cliques of order $4$ in $G^\ast(p^α)$ in terms of these hypergeometric functions.
Equivariant resolutions over Veronese rings

Working in a polynomial ring $S=\mathbf{k}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ where $\mathbf{k}$ is an arbitrary commutative ring with $1$, we consider the $d^{th}$ Veronese subalgebras $R=S^{(d)}$, as well as natural $R$-submodules $M=S^{(\geq r, d)}$ inside $S$. We develop and use characteristic-free theory of Schur functors associated to ribbon skew diagrams as a tool to construct simple $GL_n(\mathbf{k})$-equivariant minimal free $R$-resolutions for the quotient ring $\mathbf{k}=R/R_+$ and for these modules $M$. These also lead to elegant descriptions of $\mathrm{Tor}^R_i(M,M')$ for all $i$ and $\mathrm{Hom}_R(M,M')$ for any pair of these modules $M,M'$.
Characterization of rings with planar, toroidal or projective planar prime ideal sum graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity. The prime ideal sum graph $\text{PIS}(R)$ of the ring $R$ is the simple undirected graph whose vertex set is the set of all nonzero proper ideals of $R$ and two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$ are adjacent if and only if $I + J$ is a prime ideal of $R$. In this paper, we study some interplay between algebraic properties of rings and graph-theoretic properties of their prime ideal sum graphs. In this connection, we classify non-local commutative Artinian rings $R$ such that $\text{PIS}(R)$ is of crosscap at most two. We prove that there does not exist a non-local commutative Artinian ring whose prime ideal sum graph is projective planar. Further, we classify non-local commutative Artinian rings of genus one prime ideal sum graphs.
Wiener index of the Cozero-divisor graph of a finite commutative ring
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $R$ be a ring with unity. The cozero-divisor graph of a ring $R$, denoted by $Γ'(R)$, is an undirected simple graph whose vertices are the set of all non-zero and non-unit elements of $R$, and two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if $x \notin Ry$ and $y \notin Rx$. In this article, we extend some of the results of [24] to an arbitrary ring. In this connection, we derive a closed-form formula of the Wiener index of the cozero-divisor graph of a finite commutative ring $R$. As applications, we compute the Wiener index of $Γ'(R)$, when either $R$ is the product of ring of integers modulo $n$ or a reduced ring. At the final part of this paper, we provide a SageMath code to compute the Wiener index of the cozero-divisor graph of these class of rings including the ring $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$ of integers modulo $n$.
Rado functionals and applications
We study Rado functionals and the maximal condition (first introduced by J. M. Barret et al.) in terms of the partition regularity of mixed systems of linear equations and inequalities. By strengthening the maximal Rado condition, we provide a sufficient condition for the partition regularity of polynomial equations over some infinite subsets of a given commutative ring. By applying these results, we derive an extension of a previous result obtained by M. Di Nasso and L. Luperi Baglini concerning partition regular inhomogeneous polynomials in three variables and also conditions for the partition regularity of equations of the form $H(xz^ρ,y)=0$, where $ρ$ is a non-zero rational and $H\in\mathbb{Z}[x,y]$ is a homogeneous polynomial.

Determinantal Conditions for Modules of Generalized Splines
Published • View PublicationBIB
Generalized splines on a graph $G$ with edge labels in a commutative ring $R$ are vertex labelings such that if two vertices share an edge in $G$, the difference between the vertex labels lies in the ideal generated by the edge label. When $R$ is an integral domain, the set of all such splines is a finitely generated $R$-module $R_G$ of rank $n$, the number of vertices of $G$. We find determinantal conditions on subsets of $R_G$ that determine whether $R_G$ is a free module, and if so, whether a so called "flow-up class basis" exists.
Computing the strong metric dimension for co-maximal ideal graphs of commutative rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. The co-maximal ideal graph of $R$, denoted by $Γ(R)$, is a simple graph whose vertices are proper ideals of $R$ which are not contained in the Jacobson radical of $R$ and two distinct vertices $I, J$ are adjacent if and only if $I+J=R$. In this paper, we use Gallai$^{^,}$s Theorem and the concept of strong resolving graph to compute the strong metric dimension for co-maximal ideal graphs of commutative rings. Explicit formulae for the strong metric dimension, depending on whether the ring is reduced or not, are established.

Stickelberger's discriminant theorem for algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stickelberger proved that the discriminant of a number field is congruent to 0 or 1 modulo 4. We generalize this to an arbitrary (not necessarily commutative) ring of finite rank over the integers using techniques from linear algebra. Our proof, which relies only on elementary matrix identities, is new even in the classical case.

On Zero-Divisor Graph of the ring $\mathbb{F}_p+u\mathbb{F}_p+u^2 \mathbb{F}_p$
In this article, we discussed the zero-divisor graph of a commutative ring with identity $\mathbb{F}_p+u\mathbb{F}_p+u^2 \mathbb{F}_p$ where $u^3=0$ and $p$ is an odd prime. We find the clique number, chromatic number, vertex connectivity, edge connectivity, diameter and girth of a zero-divisor graph associated with the ring. We find some of topological indices and the main parameters of the code derived from the incidence matrix of the zero-divisor graph $Γ(R).$ Also, we find the eigenvalues, energy and spectral radius of both adjacency and Laplacian matrices of $Γ(R).$

Coloring in essential annihilating-ideal graphs of commutative rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
The essential annihilating-ideal graph $\mathcal{EG}(R)$ of a commutative unital ring $R$ is a simple graph whose vertices are non-zero ideals of $R$ with non-zero annihilator and there exists an edge between two distinct vertices $I,J$ if and only if $Ann(IJ)$ has a non-zero intersection with any non-zero ideal of $R$. In this paper, we show that $\mathcal{EG}(R)$ is weakly perfect, if $R$ is Noetherian and an explicit formula for the clique number of $\mathcal{EG}(R)$ is given. Moreover, the structures of all rings whose essential annihilating-ideal graphs have chromatic number $2$ are fully determined. Among other results, twin-free clique number and edge chromatic number of $\mathcal{EG}(R)$ are examined.
Induced subgraphs of zero-divisor graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The zero-divisor graph of a finite commutative ring with unity is the graph whose vertex set is the set of zero-divisors in the ring, with $a$ and $b$ adjacent if $ab=0$. We show that the class of zero-divisor graphs is universal, in the sense that every finite graph is isomorphic to an induced subgraph of a zero-divisor graph. This remains true for various restricted classes of rings, including boolean rings, products of fields, and local rings. But in more restricted classes, the zero-divisor graphs do not form a universal family. For example, the zero-divisor graph of a local ring whose maximal ideal is principal is a threshold graph; and every threshold graph is embeddable in the zero-divisor graph of such a ring. More generally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on a non-local ring for which its zero-divisor graph to be a threshold graph. In addition, we show that there is a countable local ring whose zero-divisor graph embeds the Rado graph, and hence every finite or countable graph, as induced subgraph. Finally, we consider embeddings in related graphs such as the $2$-dimensional dot product graph.

Higher Degree Erdos-Ginzburg-Ziv Constants
We generalize the notion of Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constants -- along the same lines we generalized in earlier work the notion of Davenport constants -- to a ``higher degree" and obtain various lower and upper bounds. These bounds are sometimes exact as is the case for certain finite commutative rings of prime power cardinality. We also consider to what extent a theorem due independently to W.D.~Gao and the first author that relates these two parameters extends to this higher degree setting. Two simple examples that capture the essence of these higher degree Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constants are the following. 1) Let $ν_p(m)$ denote the $p-$adic valuation of the integer $m$. Suppose we have integers $t | {m \choose 2}$ and $n=t+2^{ν_2(m)}$, then every sequence $S$ over ${\mathbb Z}_2$ of length $|S| \geq n$ contains a subsequence $S'$ of length $t$ for which $\sum_{a_{i_1},\ldots, a_{i_m} \in S'} a_{i_1}\cdots a_{i_m} \equiv 0 \pmod{2}$, and this is sharp. 2) Suppose $k=3^α$ for some integer $α\geq 2$. Then every sequence $S$ over ${\mathbb Z}_3$ of length $|S| \geq k+6$ contains a subsequence $S'$ of length $k$ for which $\sum_{a_h, a_i, a_j \in S'} a_ha_ia_j \equiv 0 \pmod{3}$. These examples illustrate that if a sequence of elements from a finite commutative ring is long enough, certain symmetric expressions (symmetric polynomials) have to vanish on the elements of a subsequence of prescribed length. The Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Theorem is just the case where a sequence of length $2n-1$ over ${\mathbb Z}_n$ contains a subsequence $S'=(a_1, \ldots, a_n)$ of length $n$ that vanishes when substituted in the linear symmetric polynomial $a_1+\cdots+a_n.$

Elementary remarks about Pisano periods
In this short note, we reprove in a very elementary way some known facts about Pisano periods as well as some considerations about the link between Pisano periods and the order of roots of the characteristic equation. The technics only requires a small background in ring theory (merely the definition of a commutative ring). The tools set here can be reused for all linear recurrences with quadratic non-constant characteristic equation.

Coloring of zero-divisor graphs of posets and applications to graphs associated with algebraic structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we characterize chordal and perfect zero-divisor graphs of finite posets. Also, it is proved that the zero-divisor graphs of finite posets and the complement of zero-divisor graphs of finite $0$-distributive posets satisfy the Total Coloring Conjecture. These results are applied to the zero-divisor graphs of finite reduced rings, the comaximal ideal graph of rings, the annihilating ideal graphs, the intersection graphs of ideals of rings, and the intersection graphs of subgroups of cyclic groups. In fact, it is proved that these graphs associated with a commutative ring $R$ with identity can be effectively studied via the zero-divisor graph of a specially constructed poset from $R$.

Applications of the Isolating Fusion Algorithm to Table Algebras and Association Schemes
Let $\mathbf{B}$ be a basis for an $r$-dimensional algebra $A$ over a field or commutative ring with unity. The semifusions of $\mathbf{B}$ are the partitions of $\mathbf{B}$ whose characteristic functions form the basis of a subalgebra of $A$, and fusions are semifusions that respect a given involution on $A$. In this paper, we give an algorithm for computing a minimal semifusion (or fusion) of $\mathbf{B}$ that isolates a prescribed list of disjoint sums of basis elements of $\mathbf{B}$, when such a semifusion (or fusion) exists. We apply this algorithm to three problems: (1) computing the fusion lattices for small association schemes of a given order; (2) producing explicit realizations of association schemes with transitive automorphism groups; and (3) producing examples of non-Schurian fusions of Schurian association schemes whose adjacency matrices have noncyclotomic eigenvalues. The latter is of interest to the open question asking whether association schemes with transitive automorphsm groups can have noncyclotomic character values.

Realization of zero-divisor graphs of finite commutative rings as threshold graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let R be a finite commutative ring with unity, and let G = (V, E) be a simple graph. The zero-divisor graph, denoted by Γ(R) is a simple graph with vertex set as R, and two vertices x, y \in R are adjacent in Γ(R) if and only if $xy = 0$. In [10], the authors have studied the Laplacian eigenvalues of the graph Γ(Z_n) and for distinct proper divisors d_1, d_2, \dots, d_k of n, they defined the sets as, A_{d_i} = {x \in Zn : (x, n) = d_i}, where (x, n) denotes the greatest common divisor of x and n. In this paper, we show that the sets A_{d_i}, 1 \leq i \leq k are actually orbits of the group action: Aut(Γ(R)) \times R \longrightarrow R, where Aut(Γ(R)) denotes the automorphism group of Γ(R). Our main objective is to determine new classes of threshold graphs, since these graphs play an important role in several applied areas. For a reduced ring R, we prove that Γ(R) is a connected threshold graph if and only if R = F_q or R = F_2 \times F_q. We provide classes of threshold graphs realized by some classes of local rings. Finally, we characterize all finite commutative rings with unity of which zero-divisor graphs are not threshold.

L(2, 1)-labeling of some zero-divisor graphs associated with commutative rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{G} = (\mathcal{V}, \mathcal{E})$ be a simple graph, an $L(2,1)$-labeling of $\mathcal{G}$ is an assignment of labels from nonnegative integers to vertices of $\mathcal{G}$ such that adjacent vertices get labels which differ by at least by two, and vertices which are at distance two from each other get different labels. The $λ$-number of $\mathcal{G}$, denoted by $λ(\mathcal{G})$, is the smallest positive integer $\ell$ such that $\mathcal{G}$ has an $L(2,1)$-labeling with all labels as members of the set $\{0,1, \dots,\ell\}$. The zero-divisor graph of a finite commutative ring $R$ with unity, denoted by $Γ(R)$, is the simple graph whose vertices are all zero divisors of $R$ in which two vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent if and only if $uv = 0$ in $R$. In this paper, we investigate $L(2,1)$-labeling of some zero-divisor graphs. We study the partite truncation, a graph operation that allows us to obtain a reduced graph of relatively small order from a graph of significantly larger order. We establish the relation between $λ$-numbers of the graph and its partite truncated one. We make use of the operation partite truncation to contract the zero-divisor graph of a reduced ring to the zero-divisor graph of a Boolean ring.

Weighted Erdős-Burgess and Davenport constant in commutative rings
Let $R$ be a finite commutative unitary ring. An idempotent in $R$ is an element $e\in R$ with $e^2=e$. Let $Ψ$ be a subgroup of the group ${\rm Aut}(R)$ of all automorphisms of $R$. The $Ψ-$weighted Erdős-Burgess constant ${\rm I}_Ψ(R)$ is defined as the smallest positive integer $\ell$ such that every sequence over $R$ of length at least $\ell$ must contain a nonempty subsequence $a_1,\ldots, a_{r}$ such that $\prod\limits_{i=1}^r ψ_i(a_i)$ is one idempotent of $R$ where $ψ_1,\ldots,ψ_r\in Ψ$. In this paper, for the finite quotient ring of a Dedekind domain $R$, a connection is established between the $Ψ-$weighted-Erdős-Burgess constant of $R$ and the $Ψ-$weighted Davenport constant of its group of units by all the prime ideals of $R$.

Towards a conjecture on a special class of matrices over commutative rings of characteristic 2
In this paper, we prove the conjecture posed by Keller and Rosemarin at Eurocrypt 2021 on the nullity of a matrix polynomial of a block matrix with Hadamard type blocks over commutative rings of characteristic 2. Therefore, it confirms the conjectural optimal bound on the dimension of invariant subspace of the Starkad cipher using the HADES design strategy. Moreover, we reveal the algebraic structure formed by Hadamard matrices over commutative rings from the perspectives of group algebra and polynomial algebra. An interesting relation between block-Hadamard matrices and Hadamard-block matrices is obtained as well.
