Decompositions of complete multipartite graphs via generalized graceful labelings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the existence of infinite classes of cyclic G-decompositions of the complete multipartite graph, G being a caterpillar, a hairy cycle or a cycle. All the results are obtained by the construction of d-divisible $α$-labelings of G, introduced in [A. Pasotti, On d-graceful labelings, to appear on Ars Combin.] as a generalization of classical $α$-labelings, whose existence implies that one of graph decompositions.

Abelian 1-factorizations of complete multipartite graphs
An automorphism group G of a 1-factorization of the complete multipartite graph $K_{m\times n}$ consists in permutations of the vertices of the graph mapping factors to factors. In this paper, we give a complete answer to the existence or non-existence problem of a 1-factorization of $K_{m\times n}$ admitting an abelian group acting sharply transitively on the vertices of the graph.

Equitable coloring of Kronecker products of complete multipartite graphs and complete graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A proper vertex coloring of a graph is equitable if the sizes of color classes differ by at most 1. The equitable chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ_=(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ is equitably $k$-colorable. The equitable chromatic threshold of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ_=^*(G)$, is the minimum $t$ such that $G$ is equitably $k$-colorable for $k \ge t$. In this paper, we give the exact values of $χ_=(K_{m_1,..., m_r} \times K_n)$ and $χ_=^*(K_{m_1,..., m_r} \times K_n)$ for $\sum_{i = 1}^r m_i \leq n$.

Equitable chromatic threshold of complete multipartite graphs
A proper vertex coloring of a graph is equitable if the sizes of color classes differ by at most one. The equitable chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ_=(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ is equitably $k$-colorable. The equitable chromatic threshold of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ_=^*(G)$, is the minimum $t$ such that $G$ is equitably $k$-colorable for $k\ge t$. We develop a formula and a linear-time algorithm which compute the equitable chromatic threshold of an arbitrary complete multipartite graph.

Signed and Minus Domination in Complete Multipartite Graphs
In this paper we determine the exact values of the signed domination number, signed total domination number, and minus domination number of complete multipartite graphs, which substantially generalizes some previous results obtained for special subclasses of complete multipartite graphs such as cliques and complete bipartite graphs.

The p-Domination Number of Complete Multipartite Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph and $p$ a positive integer. A subset $S\subseteq V$ is called a $p$-dominating set of $G$ if every vertex not in $S$ has at least $p$ neighbors in $S$. The $p$-domination number is the minimum cardinality of a $p$-dominating set in $G$. In this paper, we establish an exact formula of the $p$-domination number of all complete multipartite graphs for arbitrary positive integer $p$.

Decomposing various graphs into short even-length cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that a complete bipartite graph can be decomposed into cycles of arbitrary specified lengths provided that the obvious necessary conditions are satisfied, the length of each cycle is at most the size of the smallest part, and the longest cycle is at most three times as long as the second longest. We then use this result to obtain results on incomplete even cycle systems with a hole and on decompositions of complete multipartite graphs into cycles of uniform even length.

A Classification of Orientable Regular Embeddings of Complete Multipartite Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $K_{m[n]}$ be the complete multipartite graph with $m$ parts, while each part contains $n$ vertices. The orientably-regular embeddings of complete graphs $K_{m[1]}$ have been determined by Biggs (1971) \cite{Big1}, James and Jones (1985) \cite{JJ}. During the past twenty years, several papers such as Du et al.(2007, 2010) \cite{DJKNS1,DJKNS2}, Jones et al. (2007, 2008) \cite{JNS1,JNS2}, Kwak and Kwon (2005, 2008) \cite{KK1,KK2} and Nedela et al. (1997, 2002)\cite{NS,NSZ} contributed to the orientably-regular embeddings of complete bipartite graphs $K_{2[n]}$ and the final classification was given by Jones \cite{Jon1} in 2010. Based on our former paper \cite{ZD}, this paper gives a complete classification of orientably-regular embeddings of graphs $K_{m[n]}$ for the general cases $m\ge 3$ and $n\ge 2$.

On the second largest eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian
Published in Linear Algebra and its applications, vol. 438, pp 1215 - 1222, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n,$ and let $q_{1}(G) \geq ...\geq q_{n}(G) $ be the eigenvalues of the $Q$-matrix of $G$, also known as the signless Laplacian of $G.$ In this paper we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the equality $q_{k}(G) =n-2,$ where $1<k\leq n.$ In particular, this result solves an open problem raised by Wang, Belardo, Huang and Borovicanin. We also show that [ q_{2}(G) \geqδ(G)] and determine that equality holds if and only if $G$ is one of the following graphs: a star, a complete regular multipartite graph, the graph $K_{1,3,3},$ or a complete multipartite graph of the type $K_{1,...,1,2,...,2}$.
Line graphs and $2$-geodesic transitivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $Γ$, a positive integer $s$ and a subgroup $G\leq \Aut(Γ)$, we prove that $G$ is transitive on the set of $s$-arcs of $Γ$ if and only if $Γ$ has girth at least $2(s-1)$ and $G$ is transitive on the set of $(s-1)$-geodesics of its line graph. As applications, we first prove that the only non-complete locally cyclic $2$-geodesic transitive graphs are the complete multipartite graph $K_{3[2]}$ and the icosahedron. Secondly we classify 2-geodesic transitive graphs of valency 4 and girth 3, and determine which of them are geodesic transitive.

The Locating Chromatic Number of the Join of Graphs
Let $f$ be a proper $k$-coloring of a connected graph $G$ and $Π=(V_1,V_2,...,V_k)$ be an ordered partition of $V(G)$ into the resulting color classes. For a vertex $v$ of $G$, the color code of $v$ with respect to $Π$ is defined to be the ordered $k$-tuple $c_{{}_Π}(v):=(d(v,V_1),d(v,V_2),...,d(v,V_k)),$ where $d(v,V_i)=\min\{d(v,x)|x\in V_i\}, 1\leq i\leq k$. If distinct vertices have distinct color codes, then $f$ is called a locating coloring. The minimum number of colors needed in a locating coloring of $G$ is the locating chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $\Cchi_{{}_L}(G)$. In this paper, we study the locating chromatic number of the join of graphs. We show that when $G_1$ and $G_2$ are two connected graphs with diameter at most two, then $\Cchi_{{}_L}(G_1+G_2)=\Cchi_{{}_L}(G_1)+\Cchi_{{}_L}(G_2)$, where $G_1+G_2$ is the join of $G_1$ and $G_2$. Also, we determine the locating chromatic numbers of the join of paths, cycles and complete multipartite graphs.

Towards on-line Ohba's conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
The on-line choice number of a graph is a variation of the choice number defined through a two person game. It is at least as large as the choice number for all graphs and is strictly larger for some graphs. In particular, there are graphs $G$ with $|V(G)| = 2 χ(G)+1$ whose on-line choice numbers are larger than their chromatic numbers, in contrast to a recently confirmed conjecture of Ohba that every graph $G$ with $|V(G)| \le 2 χ(G)+1$ has its choice number equal its chromatic number. Nevertheless, an on-line version of Ohba conjecture was proposed in [P. Huang, T. Wong and X. Zhu, Application of polynomial method to on-line colouring of graphs, European J. Combin., 2011]: Every graph $G$ with $|V(G)| \le 2 χ(G)$ has its on-line choice number equal its chromatic number. This paper confirms the on-line version of Ohba conjecture for graphs $G$ with independence number at most 3. We also study list colouring of complete multipartite graphs $K_{3\star k}$ with all parts of size 3. We prove that the on-line choice number of $K_{3 \star k}$ is at most $3/2k$, and present an alternate proof of Kierstead's result that its choice number is $\lceil (4k-1)/3 \rceil$. For general graphs $G$, we prove that if $|V(G)| \le χ(G)+\sqrt{χ(G)}$ then its on-line choice number equals chromatic number.

Decompositions of Complete Multipartite Graphs into Complete Graphs
Let $k\geq\ell\geq1$ and $n\geq 1$ be integers. Let $G(k,n)$ be the complete $k$-partite graph with $n$ vertices in each colour class. An $\ell$-decomposition of $G(k,n)$ is a set $X$ of copies of $K_k$ in $G(k,n)$ such that each copy of $K_\ell$ in $G(k,n)$ is a subgraph of exactly one copy of $K_k$ in $X$. This paper asks: when does $G(k,n)$ have an $\ell$-decomposition? The answer is well known for the $\ell=2$ case. In particular, $G(k,n)$ has a 2-decomposition if and only if there exists $k-2$ mutually orthogonal Latin squares of order $n$. For general $\ell$, we prove that $G(k,n)$ has an $\ell$-decomposition if and only if there are $k-\ell$ Latin cubes of dimension $\ell$ and order $n$, with an additional property that we call mutually invertible. This property is stronger than being mutually orthogonal. An $\ell$-decomposition of $G(k,n)$ is then constructed whenever no prime less than $k$ divides $n$.
Choosability with separation of complete multipartite graphs and hypergraphs
For a hypergraph G and a positive integer s, let χ_{\ell} (G,s) be the minimum value of l such that G is L-colorable from every list L with |L(v)|=l for each v\in V(G) and |L(u)\cap L(v)|\leq s for all u, v\in e\in E(G). This parameter was studied by Kratochvíl, Tuza and Voigt for various kinds of graphs. Using randomized constructions we find the asymptotics of χ_{\ell} (G,s) for balanced complete multipartite graphs and for complete k-partite k-uniform hypergraphs.

The Inducibility of Graphs on Four Vertices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of determining the maximum induced density of a graph H in any graph on n vertices. The limit of this density as n tends to infinity is called the inducibility of H. The exact value of this quantity is known only for a handful of small graphs and a specific set of complete multipartite graphs. Answering questions of Brown-Sidorenko and Exoo we determine the inducibility of K_{1,1,2} and the paw graph. The proof is obtained using semi-definite programming techniques based on a modern language of extremal graph theory, which we develop in full detail in an accessible setting.

k-tuple total restrained domination and k-tuple total restrained domatic in graphs
Published in BUll. Iranian Math. Soc. Vol 40 (2014) No. 3 pp.751-763 • Search Publication
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ and size $m$ and let $k\geq 1$ be an integer. A $k$-tuple total dominating set in $G$ is called a $k$-tuple total restrained dominating set of $G$ if each vertex $x\in V(G)-S$ is adjacent to at least $k$ vertices of $V(G)-S$. The minimum number of vertices of a such sets in $G$ are the $k$-tuple total restrained domination number $γ_{\times k,t}^{r}(G)$ of $G$. The maximum number of classes of a partition of $V(G)$ such that its all classes are $k$-tuple total restrained dominating sets in $G$, is called the $k$-tuple total restrained domatic number of $G$. In this manuscript, we first find $γ_{\times k,t}^{r}(G)$, when $G$ is complete graph, cycle, bipartite graph and the complement of path or cycle. Also we will find bounds for this number when $G$ is a complete multipartite graph. Then we will know the structure of graphs $G$ which $γ_{\times k,t}^{r}(G)=m$, for some $m\geq k+1$ and give upper and lower bounds for $γ_{\times k,t}^{r}(G)$, when $G$ is an arbitrary graph. Next, we mainly present basic properties of the $k$-tuple total restrained domatic number of a graph and give bounds for it. Finally we give bounds for the $k$-tuple total restrained domination number of the complementary prism $G\bar{G}$ in terms on the similar number of $G$ and $\bar{G}$ when $G$ is a regular graph or an arbitrary graph. And then we calculate it when $G$ is cycle or path.

Some results on triangle partitions
We show that there exist efficient algorithms for the triangle packing problem in colored permutation graphs, complete multipartite graphs, distance-hereditary graphs, k-modular permutation graphs and complements of k-partite graphs (when k is fixed). We show that there is an efficient algorithm for C_4-packing on bipartite permutation graphs and we show that C_4-packing on bipartite graphs is NP-complete. We characterize the cobipartite graphs that have a triangle partition.
Irreversible k-threshold and majority conversion processes on complete multipartite graphs and graph products
In graph theoretical models of the spread of disease through populations, the spread of opinion through social networks, and the spread of faults through distributed computer networks, vertices are in two states, either black or white, and these states are dynamically updated at discrete time steps according to the rules of the particular conversion process used in the model. This paper considers the irreversible k-threshold and majority conversion processes. In an irreversible k-threshold (resp., majority) conversion process, a vertex is permanently colored black in a certain time period if at least k (resp., at least half) of its neighbors were black in the previous time period. A k-conversion set (resp., dynamic monopoly) is a set of vertices which, if initially colored black, will result in all vertices eventually being colored black under a k-threshold (resp., majority) conversion process. We answer several open problems by presenting bounds and some exact values of the minimum number of vertices in k-conversion sets and dynamic monopolies of complete multipartite graphs, as well as of Cartesian and tensor products of two graphs.

Graph Varieties in High Dimension
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the \emph{picture space} $X^d(G)$ of all embeddings of a finite graph $G$ as point-and-line arrangements in an arbitrary-dimensional projective space, continuing previous work on the planar case. The picture space admits a natural decomposition into smooth quasiprojective subvarieties called \emph{cellules}, indexed by partitions of the vertex set of $G$, and the irreducible components of $X^d(G)$ correspond to cellules that are maximal with respect to a partial order on partitions that is in general weaker than refinement. We study both general properties of this partial order and its characterization for specific graphs. Our results include complete combinatorial descriptions of the irreducible components of the picture spaces of complete graphs and complete multipartite graphs, for any ambient dimension $d$. In addition, we give two graph-theoretic formulas for the minimum ambient dimension in which the directions of edges in an embedding of $G$ are mutually constrained.
Roots of Ehrhart polynomials arising from graphs
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 34(4) 721-749 (2011) • View PublicationBIB
Several polytopes arise from finite graphs. For edge and symmetric edge polytopes, in particular, exhaustive computation of the Ehrhart polynomials not merely supports the conjecture of Beck {\it et al.}\ that all roots $α$ of Ehrhart polynomials of polytopes of dimension $D$ satisfy $-D \le \Re(α) \le D - 1$, but also reveals some interesting phenomena for each type of polytope. Here we present two new conjectures: (1) the roots of the Ehrhart polynomial of an edge polytope for a complete multipartite graph of order $d$ lie in the circle $|z+\tfrac{d}{4}| \le \tfrac{d}{4}$ or are negative integers, and (2) a Gorenstein Fano polytope of dimension $D$ has the roots of its Ehrhart polynomial in the narrower strip $-\tfrac{D}{2} \leq \Re(α) \leq \tfrac{D}{2}-1$. Some rigorous results to support them are obtained as well as for the original conjecture. The root distribution of Ehrhart polynomials of each type of polytope is plotted in figures.
