Toric and tropical compactifications of hyperplane complements
Published in Ann. Fac. Sci. Toulouse Math. (6) 23 (2014), no. 2, 297-333 • View PublicationBIB
These lecture notes are based on lectures given by the author at the summer school "Arrangements in Pyrénées" in June 2012. We survey and compare various compactifications of complex hyperplane arrangement complements. In particular, we review the Gel'fand-MacPherson construction, Kapranov's visible contours compactification, and De Concini and Procesi's wonderful compactification. We explain how these constructions are unified by some ideas from the modern origins of tropical geometry. The paper contains a few new arguments intended to make the presentation as self-contained as possible.

An equivariant discrete model for complexified arrangement complements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a partial ordering on the set Q = Q(M) of pairs of topes of an oriented matroid M, and show the geometric realization |Q| of the order complex of Q has the same homotopy type as the Salvetti complex of M. For any element e of the ground set, the complex |Qe| associated to the rank-one oriented matroid on {e} has the homotopy type of the circle. There is a natural free simplicial action of Z4 on |Q|, with orbit space isomorphic to the order complex of the poset Q(M,e) associated to the pointed (or affine) oriented matroid (M,e). If M is the oriented matroid of an arrangement A of linear hyperplanes in real space, the Z_4 action corresponds to the diagonal action of C* on the complement M of the complexification of A: |Q| is equivariantly homotopy-equivalent to M under the identification of Z_4 with {+1, i, -1, -i}, and |Q(M, e)| is homotopy-equivalent to the complement of the decone of A relative to the hyperplane corresponding to e. All constructions and arguments are carried out at the level of the underlying posets. If a group G acts on the set of topes of M preserving adjacency, then G acts simplicially on |Q|. We also show that the class of fundamental groups of such complexes is strictly larger than the class of fundamental groups of complements of complex hyperplane arrangements. Specifically, the group of the non-Pappus arrange- ment is not isomorphic to any realizable arrangement group.
On the second nilpotent quotient of higher homotopy groups, for hypersolvable arrangements
Published in Int. Math. Res. Notices vol. 2015, no.24 (2015), 13194--13207 • View PublicationBIB
We examine the first non-vanishing higher homotopy group, $π_p$, of the complement of a hypersolvable, non--supersolvable, complex hyperplane arrangement, as a module over the group ring of the fundamental group, $\Zπ_1$. We give a presentation for the $I$--adic completion of $π_p$. We deduce that the second nilpotent $I$--adic quotient of $π_p$ is determined by the combinatorics of the arrangement, and we give a combinatorial formula for the second associated graded piece, $\gr^1_I π_p$. We relate the torsion of this graded piece to the dimensions of the minimal generating systems of the Orlik--Solomon ideal of the arrangement $\A$ in degree $p+2$, for various field coefficients. When $\A$ is associated to a finite simple graph, we show that $\gr^1_I π_p$ is torsion--free, with rank explicitly computable from the graph.

Hyperplane arrangements and Milnor fibrations
Published in Annales de la Faculté des Sciences de Toulouse 23 (2014), no. 2, 417-481 • View PublicationBIB
There are several topological spaces associated to a complex hyperplane arrangement: the complement and its boundary manifold, as well as the Milnor fiber and its own boundary. All these spaces are related in various ways, primarily by a set of interlocking fibrations. We use cohomology with coefficients in rank 1 local systems on the complement of the arrangement to gain information on the homology of the other three spaces, and on the monodromy operators of the various fibrations.

Combinatorial stratifications and minimality of 2-arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the complement of any affine 2-arrangement in R^d is minimal, that is, it is homotopy equivalent to a cell complex with as many i-cells as its i-th rational Betti number. For the proof, we provide a Lefschetz-type hyperplane theorem for complements of 2-arrangements, and introduce Alexander duality for combinatorial Morse functions. Our results greatly generalize previous work by Falk, Dimca--Papadima, Hattori, Randell, and Salvetti--Settepanella and others, and they demonstrate that in contrast to previous investigations, a purely combinatorial approach suffices to show minimality and the Lefschetz Hyperplane Theorem for complements of complex hyperplane arrangements.

On supersolvable reflection arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let A = (A,V) be a complex hyperplane arrangement and let L(A) denote its intersection lattice. The arrangement A is called supersolvable, provided its lattice L(A) is supersolvable, a notion due to Stanley. Jambu and Terao showed that every supersolvable arrangement is inductively free, a notion due to Terao. So this is a natural subclass of this particular class of free arrangements. Suppose that W is a finite, unitary reflection group acting on the complex vector space V. Let A = (A(W), V) be the associated hyperplane arrangement of W. In a recent paper, we determined all inductively free reflection arrangements. The aim of this note is to classify all supersolvable reflection arrangements. Moreover, we characterize the irreducible arrangements in this class by the presence of modular elements of rank 2 in their intersection lattice.
Discriminantal bundles, arrangement groups, and subdirect products of free groups

We construct bundles $E_k(\A,\F) \to M$ over the complement $M$ of a complex hyperplane arrangement \A, depending on an integer $k \geq 1$ and a set $\F=\{f_1, \ldots, f_μ\}$ of continuous functions $f_i \colon M \to \C$ whose differences are nonzero on $M$, generalizing the configuration space bundles arising in the Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representation of the pure braid group. We display such families \F\ for rank two arrangements, reflection arrangements of types $A_\ell$, $B_\ell$, $D_\ell$, $F_4$, and for arrangements supporting multinet structures with three classes, with the resulting bundles having nontrivial monodromy around each hyperplane. The construction extends to arbitrary arrangements by pulling back these bundles along products of inclusions arising from subarrangements of these types. We then consider the faithfulness of the resulting representations of the arrangement group $π_1(M)$. We describe the kernel of the product $ρ_\X \colon G \to \prod_{S \in \X} G_S$ of homomorphisms of a finitely-generated group $G$ onto quotient groups $G_S$ determined by a family \X\ of subsets of a fixed set of generators of $G$, extending a result of T.~Stanford about Brunnian braids. When the projections $G \to G_S$ split in a compatible way, we show the image of $ρ_\X$ is normal with free abelian quotient, and identify the cohomological finiteness type of $G$. These results apply to some well-studied arrangements, implying several qualitative and residual properties of $π_1(M)$, including an alternate proof of a result of Artal, Cogolludo, and Matei on arrangement groups and Bestvina-Brady groups, and a dichotomy for a decomposable arrangement \A: either $π_1(M)$ has a conjugation-free presentation or it is not residually nilpotent.

A survey of combinatorial aspects in the topology of complex hyperplane arrangements
Published in Contemporary Math. 508 (2009), 113-128 • Search Publication
We survey interactions between the topology and the combinatorics of complex hyperplane arrangements. Without claiming to be exhaustive, we examine in this setting combinatorial aspects of fundamental groups, associated graded Lie algebras, higher homotopy groups, cohomology rings, twisted homology with rank 1 complex coefficients, and Milnor fibers.

Random walks, arrangements, cell complexes, greedoids, and self-organizing libraries
The starting point is the known fact that some much-studied random walks on permutations, such as the Tsetlin library, arise from walks on real hyperplane arrangements. This paper explores similar walks on complex hyperplane arrangements. This is achieved by involving certain cell complexes naturally associated with the arrangement. In a particular case this leads to walks on libraries with several shelves. We also show that interval greedoids give rise to random walks belonging to the same general family. Members of this family of Markov chains, based on certain semigroups, have the property that all eigenvalues of the transition matrices are non-negative real and given by a simple combinatorial formula. Background material needed for understanding the walks is reviewed in rather great detail.

Stratified Morse Theory in Arrangements
Published in Pure Appl. Math. Q. 2 (2006), 673-697 • View PublicationBIB
This paper is a survey of our work based on the stratified Morse theory of Goresky and MacPherson. First we discuss the Morse theory of Euclidean space stratified by an arrangement. This is used to show that the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement admits a minimal cell decomposition. Next we review the construction of a cochain complex whose cohomology computes the local system cohomology of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement. Then we present results on the Gauss-Manin connection for the moduli space of arrangements of a fixed combinatorial type in rank one local system cohomology.

Hyperplane arrangements and Lefschetz's hyperplane section theorem
Published in Kodai Math. Journal 30 no. 2 (2007) 157--194. • View PublicationBIB
The Lefschetz hyperplane section theorem asserts that an affine variety is homotopy equivalent to a space obtained from its generic hyperplane section by attaching some cells. The purpose of this paper is to describe attaching maps of these cells for the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement defined over real numbers. The cells and attaching maps are described in combinatorial terms of chambers. We also discuss the cellular chain complex with coefficients in a local system and a presentation for the fundamental group associated to the minimal CW-decomposition for the complement.

Resonance, linear syzygies, Chen groups, and the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand correspondence
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 358 (2006), no. 5, 2269-2289 • View PublicationBIB
If \A is a complex hyperplane arrangement, with complement X, we show that the Chen ranks of G=π_1(X) are equal to the graded Betti numbers of the linear strand in a minimal, free resolution of the cohomology ring A=H^*(X,\k), viewed as a module over the exterior algebra E on \A: θ_k(G) = \dim_\k Tor^E_{k-1}(A,\k)_k, where \k is a field of characteristic 0, and k\ge 2. The Chen ranks conjecture asserts that, for k sufficiently large, θ_k(G) =(k-1) \sum_{r\ge 1} h_r \binom{r+k-1}{k}, where h_r is the number of r-dimensional components of the projective resonance variety R^1(\A). Our earlier work on the resolution of A over E and the above equality yield a proof of the conjecture for graphic arrangements. Using results on the geometry of R^1(\A) and a localization argument, we establish the conjectured lower bound for the Chen ranks of an arbitrary arrangement \A. Finally, we show that there is a polynomial P(t) of degree equal to the dimension of R^1(\A), such that θ_k(G) = P(k), for k sufficiently large.

On the homotopy Lie algebra of an arrangement
Published in Michigan Mathematical Journal 54 (2006), no. 2, 319-340 • View PublicationBIB
Let A be a graded-commutative, connected k-algebra generated in degree 1. The homotopy Lie algebra g_A is defined to be the Lie algebra of primitives of the Yoneda algebra, Ext_A(k,k). Under certain homological assumptions on A and its quadratic closure, we express g_A as a semi-direct product of the well-understood holonomy Lie algebra h_A with a certain h_A-module. This allows us to compute the homotopy Lie algebra associated to the cohomology ring of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement, provided some combinatorial assumptions are satisfied. As an application, we give examples of hyperplane arrangements whose complements have the same Poincaré polynomial, the same fundamental group, and the same holonomy Lie algebra, yet different homotopy Lie algebras.

When does the associated graded Lie algebra of an arrangement group decompose?
Published in Commentarii Mathematici Helvetici 81 (2006), no. 4, 859-875 • View PublicationBIB
Let \A be a complex hyperplane arrangement, with fundamental group G and holonomy Lie algebra \H. Suppose \H_3 is a free abelian group of minimum possible rank, given the values the Möbius function μ: Ł_2\to \Z takes on the rank 2 flats of \A. Then the associated graded Lie algebra of G decomposes (in degrees 2 and higher) as a direct product of free Lie algebras. In particular, the ranks of the lower central series quotients of the group are given by φ_r(G)=\sum_{X\in Ł_2} φ_r(F_{μ(X)}), for r\ge 2. We illustrate this new Lower Central Series formula with several families of examples.

Triples of arrangements and local systems
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 130 (2002), 3025-3031 • View PublicationBIB
For a triple of complex hyperplane arrangements, there is a well-known long exact sequence relating the cohomology of the complements. We observe that this result extends to certain local coefficient systems, and use this extension to study the characteristic varieties of arrangements. We show that the first characteristic variety may contain components that are translated by characters of any order, thereby answering a question of A. Suciu.

Combinatorial and algebraic structure in Orlik-Solomon algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Orlik-Solomon algebra ${\cal A}(G)$ of a matroid $G$ is the free exterior algebra on the points, modulo the ideal generated by the circuit boundaries. On one hand, this algebra is a homotopy invariant of the complement of any complex hyperplane arrangement realizing $G$. On the other hand, some features of the matroid $G$ are reflected in the algebraic structure of ${\cal A}(G)$. In this mostly expository article, we describe recent developments in the construction of algebraic invariants of ${\cal A}(G)$. We develop a categorical framework for the statement and proof of recently discovered isomorphism theorems which suggests a possible setting for classification theorems. Several specific open problems are formulated.

Higher homotopy groups of complements of complex hyperplane arrangements
Published in Advances in Math. 165 (2002), 71-100 • View PublicationBIB
We generalize results of Hattori on the topology of complements of hyperplane arrangements, from the class of generic arrangements, to the much broader class of hypersolvable arrangements. We show that the higher homotopy groups of the complement vanish in a certain combinatorially determined range, and we give an explicit Zπ_1-module presentation of π_p, the first non-vanishing higher homotopy group. We also give a combinatorial formula for the π_1-coinvariants of π_p. For affine line arrangements whose cones are hypersolvable, we provide a minimal resolution of π_2, and study some of the properties of this module. For graphic arrangements associated to graphs with no 3-cycles, we obtain information on π_2, directly from the graph. The π_1-coinvariants of π_2 may distinguish the homotopy 2-types of arrangement complements with the same π_1, and the same Betti numbers in low degrees.

Parallel connections and bundles of arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let \A be a complex hyperplane arrangement, and let $X$ be a modular element of arbitrary rank in the intersection lattice of \A. We show that projection along $X$ restricts to a fiber bundle projection of the complement of \A to the complement of the localization $\A_X$ of \A at $X$. The fiber is the decone of a realization of the complete principal truncation of the underlying matroid of \A along the flat corresponding to $X$. This result gives a topological realization of results of Stanley, Brylawsky, and Terao on modular factorization. We show that (generalized) parallel connection of matroids corresponds to pullback of fiber bundles, clarifying the notion that all examples of diffeomorphisms of complements of inequivalent arrangements result from the triviality of the restriction of the Hopf bundle to the complement of a hyperplane. The modular fibration result also yields a new method for identifying $K(π,1)$ arrangements of rank greater than three. We identify a new families of $K(π,1)$ arrangements, providing more evidence for the conjecture that factored arrangements of arbitrary rank are $K(π,1)$.
